I can attest that several reviews here had me completely worried. I chose Simon Lee Bakery because they were a preferred vendor for my venue and I received a credit if I worked with this bakery. Communication is a factor and something that needs to be treated with patience on both sides. She's a very busy woman, but so are the brides to be. She's a very stressed woman running an amazing bakery, but brides to be are also stressed out planning their perfect day. This is something to remember when working with Simon Lee Bakery. Bring your own water, because none will be provided for you. Call ahead and talk out flavors because waiting until the day of will is chaotic. Always been a fan of this bakery for their fruit cake. It is a white cake (2 layers) with fresh strawberries and buttercream filling, and almond slivers on the outside. You can ask for other berries on top, which I did on this last order, and they didn't charge extra. Sorry did not have any cake left for pictures, it was gone really fast. Current prices are $80 for an 8in, $110 for 10in. Yes, that is very steep considering the berry chantilly cake from whole foods is half the price and almost comparable to the taste. It used to be around $40-$50 for the 8in. It is so good though, moist and not overly sweet, the cake and the buttercream. I have to say that the cake is probably catered to Asian taste buds because we don't like super sweet desserts. Keep that in mind, it is not that sweet. That's how I can eat the buttercream with the cake. I normally scrape off any buttercream on other cakes. I've had the opportunity to try a wedding cake by Simon Lee at a friend's wedding (pina colada flavor). It didn't disappoint either, not too sweet and moist. This was the fifth and final bakery at which my fiance and I had a wedding cake tasting. Hands down, it was the BEST and most delicious cake we tried. It was a $25 dollar tasting charge, but they brought us each a plate with ten different, decently sized slices of cake. The cakes were pre-constructed, none of that build-your-own nonsense here. I am still drooling about the flavors. Amazing! First downside: you could not pick which flavors you try. We were told the flavors on our plate were the most popular, but I'm pretty sure it was just whatever they happened to be making that day or weekend. Second downside: THE COST. My fiance and I only wanted a small, two-tiered cutting cake, as we plan to have a full dessert bar. For a cake that serves 30 people, with delivery to downtown Austin, and plain, white frosting, no design, the price was $450!!! I couldn't believe it. Seriously, I thought they were joking. I enjoyed the tasting appointment. I left with my ears ringing and my head spinning for sugar and insulin attacking all my vital organs. Judy was a true professional, and we very quickly had a solid design for our white cake with cream cheese icing and fresh strawberries. At the wedding, we received dozens of compliments about the cake. Everyone wanted to know what vendor we used. We just had our cake tasting at Simon Lee and I couldn't have been more disappointed! We sat there for 12 minutes before they brought out the pieces of cake to start the tasting. When I asked for water Art seemed hesitant to bring us any. I would have thought that it was a normal request when tasting cake. After we finally got the cake and went through the flavors it was downhill. He did ask us all the normal questions, but then he was so hung up on the other places we have tried and how the compare. He wanted to know who else we've tried. Then he straight up asked "How did their cake compare to ours". It was so extremely uncomfortable! And then to top it off he flat out asked "so what pricing did they give you?" Which only made it more awkward. He followed up by asking what other places we are going to. Then when he found out we live in Pflugerville he jokingly chided us for not shopping local. I understand that while he is drawing out the cake he has to find something to talk about but that was completely inappropriate. So just to start off, I am a cake decorator, baker, etc, so I do have high standards. I analyze and critique anything I eat.......that said, the cakes at this place are amazing. I ordered a 3 tier pina colada with cream cheese wedding cake and a single tier chocolate mousse cake for the groom. During the initial meeting and tasting, she got very confused about what design I wanted, despite the fact I gave her my wedding invitation and said copy this. She messed up our monogram and then argued with me that it was right (It should have been KYH, but she wrote KHY) The cakes were GORGEOUS. Everyone had a fit at how beautiful both of them were. I was very very very pleased with how she executed the design. I had ordered cream cheese frosting, but for some reason it showed up covered in buttercream, but it still tasted so gosh darn amazing. We took home a big chunk of both of the cakes, and I ate them as often as I could, and was very sad to throw the rest of it away a week later. Everyone just went crazy over how delicious and moist the cakes were. Customer service could be better. Cakes are amazing. Prices are average to pricey. We loved everything about working with Simon Lee - the deliciousness of their cakes is unmatched, their look & quality of work is perfect, and their kindness and professionalism is rare. Judy and Jad took such great care of us. Their bakery may not be the fanciest but that doesn't even matter - the cakes are beautiful and delicious. Not like your guests are even going to see what the bakery looks like... I must have changed my mind about the style of cake at least 5 times - each time they were so helpful and patient. My final choice was actually one that Judy recommended and it turned out better than I could have imagined! She read me so well and got the cake spot on. I cannot stop looking at pictures of my cake! I found Simon Lee through the Bridal Expo last year. I tried many different cakes and flavors, and Simon Lee had the best tasting cake HANDS DOWN. So moist and the flavors are authentic, not artificial. Another thing that stood out was their cake displays. WOW so tall, detailed, elegant and beautiful. They have such a wide range of talent, doing not only wedding cakes, but grooms cakes, birthday cakes, specialty cakes. They make UT tower replica cakes for goodness sake! Simon Lee makes the unthinkable happen. I worked with Judy from the get go, and she is just MARVELOUS. She was so helpful from the first consultation to the day of the wedding. I brought in some inspirational photos, and she took copious notes and really took my vision to heart. She copied my inspirational photo into my customer profile and sketched everything out so that I can approve. Very thoughtful and customer focused. She did both my wedding and groom's cake, and they were completely different concepts. Simon Lee also has the BEST flavor combinations. I drool every time I look at her filling and cake flavor sheet. We did three different cake flavors and a unique filling for each, one for each tier. Judy helped us pick the best combinations and let us try each. They use the best ingredients and their butter cream is so velvety- it's to die for! My cake turned out exactly how I wanted it the day of. As much as I love their cakes, the service is terrible! I have talked to others that have had a similar bait and switch experience with the pricing quoted at The Bridal Expo or a venue vendor expo. As a clarification to my pervious post my husband has gotten me a Simon Lee cake for birthdays and anniversaries since our wedding. I have always been astonished at the price for a SHEET CAKE with plain frosting. You are essentially always paying the "wedding" mark-up. As an FYI their icing is on the REALLY sweet side...as in you can taste granulated sugar in the icing. The past few orders have been just disappointing. Their store is still located in a crummy strip mall. They may have "expanded" their waiting area but they have really poor service. And don't let the display case fool you. If they even have anything in the case, they are $4-5 cookies. I guess all their local hype has made them complacent. We won't be ordering from Sinon Lee again. So sad when a business just checks out on customer service. read more

This was our first cake tasting for our wedding. We were excited to eat cake so this was like a dream come true. We walk into the store (the open sign was not on but we figured that we had an appointment so it was all good). It took some time for anyone to notice us and the very kind employee who saw us offered us a seat and said he would give us our samples in no time. So, we sit down and time goes by and by. The kind employee comes out and asks if we have an appointment (which we did) and says that we are not on the calendar. Hmmm...weird. I had confirmed with Judy through email about our appointment and showed him that email. 20 minutes after our assigned time Judy comes waltzing in. She brushes past us, not even looking at us, and goes back. We continued eating our samples in silence. Then, Judy comes in without an apology or even recognizing that she was late and basically says "What do you want?" Now, this was our first appointment so we had no idea what to expect. We had some ideas that we showed her but she kept asking "Well, if you don't tell me how much to spend then I can't help you." I finally blurted that we didn't know how much cakes were and were hoping for her advice. She basically drew up a simple cake and told us it would be whatever price. Then, she kind of mocked me for taking notes. She said "Oh, honey, all these questions are on google so I've seen them all before. You don't need to ask them." The problem was that I needed the answers to the question and she needed to provide the answers to me. Halfway through the experience I just gave up. She was not being helpful, was rude, and seemed like she didn't want our business. It's my wedding, I don't want to be treated like I'm an annoyance in their day. Don't get your cake here. I honestly don't know what people are on, but Simon's Lee not only has horrible cake, but it has some of the worst cake I've tasted in a long time. If I could rate half a star, I would. I've been spending the past month or so looking for a bakery to do my wedding cake, and of course you hear it all over the Bridal Shows (which are a joke, btw) "Oh, you MUST try Simon Lee cakes, they're ARTISTS." A word to the wise: artist does not equal chef. Their cakes are lovely, don't get me wrong. Granted, their style is a bit passe these days, but they're classic and lovely. I guess I should relay my own experience to give what I'm saying some context. Starting off, I tried calling Simon Lee to schedule an appointment so many times, but their voice mail was full. Are that many people in the Austin area getting married on any given day? Do they not have someone to mind the answering machine? After several tries throughout the week, my mother was able to reach someone during my normal work hours. She schedules the appointment, and that's it. "That's it?" I ask. "No 'what flavors do you want to try? No 'how many' or 'what day'?" Nope. Nothing. It seemed dubious at best. So weeks later, after I had to bend over backward yet again to confirm the appointment (still with a chip on my shoulder that no one asked me about flavors) we walk in to Simon Lee's bakery - a poorly-lit, dusty, sad-looking place with their fake cakes for display. I grit my teeth, feeling rather nervous that I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face about my relationship with the bakery thus far. Would they even have any of the flavors I wanted? I was greeted by a woman (I don't remember her name, I don't think she ever told me) who proceeded to seat us by a bunch of binders with photos (definitely from at least 20 years ago, as the dresses and hair showed) of their past work. I guess we were supposed to spend the next 20 minutes looking through these while they scraped up whatever flavors they had in the back. Basically I told them I didn't like chocolate, which seemed to be a BFD (big f***ing deal), so they basically told me what flavors I'd be trying. Uhm, no? Not cool. How will I be able to know if I want you for my cake baker if I don't know if you can make the flavors *I* want? Wow. So after 20 minutes or so, she returned with plates of four flavors or so. To be perfectly honest, I don't remember what all the flavors were. None of them were the flavors I was interested in, nor were the flavors anything resembling what they said they were - in fact, they all blurred together as they were all so much alike. The only one that stood out to me was the pistachio, which was so AWFUL I still cringe to think about it. Rather than being that nice, delicately sweet pistachio you think of with spumoni or other nice sweets, my tongue was tragically acquainted with a mushy mess of watered-down peanut-butter tasting glop. The cakes were flavorless. The icings were as well, unless they were unbelievably awful. Blech! Bleh bleh bleh! At that point, I didn't care that they had never heard of someone making an Earl-Grey flavored cake, or even Almond! Even if they had, I wouldn't ever want them making it. So brides, don't fret if you're having trouble getting a hold of Simon Lee. Consider yourself spared. read more

OK, like everybody else I decided to try Simon Lee for my wedding cake because they're just "so amazing" according to every bridal show. But honestly, I was so incredibly underwhelmed. The cake was ok, but the customer service was awful! When we came in for our tasting we had to wait about 25 minutes to be seen (very unprofessional) and then when we were finally seen, it felt like the baker was just going through the motions. There was almost no attention paid to what we wanted, no respect for our budget and the cakes that we tasted (which we had no say in and would never have chosen) were very meh. Five minutes in we wanted to walk out, and by the end of the short consultation we had a proposal for a boring, cookie-cutter cake with no personalization that was at least 50% higher than any other quote we got - btw, the other quotes were for tastier cakes that were completely personalized for us. Seriously, what is all the fuss about? I guess this is a good place if you want to seem trendy and overpay? Brides, you are MUCH better served going somewhere else with less ego and more taste (literally). Suffice it to say, we did. read more

Ok, so I gave them 5 stars for the quality of my wedding cake... that being said I would give them 1 star for customer service. They are also VERY pricey compared to other bakeries. Our cake was an italian cream cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for 2 layers and 1 layer of red velvet. I had tasted their cake at a bridal show and was hooked but when we went for our consultation we were rushed thru with no tasting and Judy acted like she was put out almost the entire time ( I had asked her for a later appt because my husband and i couldn't get off work early to meet with her in the middle of the day!). Our cake was also supposed to have a chocolate bow on top that wasn't on there when it was dropped off at our wedding, our florist had to scramble to come up with a topper since the bow wasn't there. I remember for my highschool and college graduation family get -togethers the cakes were both from Simon Lee Bakery. I've even ordered indvidual round cakes for family members birthday and had them made and ready the same day! The cakes are always fresh, the icing is always perfect - sweet, perfectly molded, not melted or smudged on. The prices are reasonable, and I could even say I'd pay more for what they offer. We did many cake tastings, mainly because that was my favorite part, but no one held a candle to Simon & Lee. Their cakes were so light and flavorful, I could eat a whole piece without feeling like I had to be rolled out of the room. Simon & Lee is also family owned and operated and Judy was such a joy to work with! But the best part was that Judy was able to make perfect renderings of our sweet pups for our cake!! At like 6:30 that morning, I found out my parents were getting divorced, and honestly, that 7:00 am dose of chocolate raspberry cake made me feel so much better. Now that is some good cake, people. My sister had Simon Lee do her wedding cakes 10 years ago, and when I got married the one request my mother made was that we also get our cakes from Simon Lee. The cakes were exactly as we wanted, and we were exceedingly pleased. My husbands cake was chocolate with grand marnier buttercream and strawberries, and mine was white cake with kahlua buttercream. I like to tell the story about when we went in to pick our cake flavors. Initially I wanted the strawberries and grand marnier with white cake, but when i tasted it with chocolate, it was so much better that way. My husband is a sweety and felt bad about "stealing" my cake. So we tasted cakes in all types of combinations for I think about an hour. The bakery smelled delicious at first but after that long I got very overwhelmed by the smell and felt pretty sick, even having to stand outside several times. Then she brought out the white cake with kahlua buttercream. I not only got tears in my eyes, but I ate the whole thing. It was so good it brought me back to hungry. The also worked to get us our cake within our budget, just doing a sheet cake for the main grooms cake to serve and a smaller tiered cake for the showy grooms cake. My father forgot that he told them to put it in the front room, so we didn't eat it until the next day after our celebration boat party, and it was a lovely treat. read more

Everyone LOVED our cake! Beautiful and yummy, which isn't often the case when it comes to wedding cakes. It was a destination wedding so planning was tricky. Judy was great, we were able to put a deposit via phone/fax, and gave her the basics. Then when we got to town the week of the wedding we went to the shop and made our final selection. We could have done it all via email and phone, but I wanted the reassurance of meeting the vendor beforehand (one of the few vendors I got to meet before the 'big day'), and of course I wanted a tasting! It was a bit of a drive from where we were staying in San Marcos, and probably would be a bit out of the way for folks living in Austin. But worth the drive! Yet another wonderful wedding vendor - the cakes at the Simon Lee Bakery are delicious and beautiful. We had 2 cakes done here - a wedding cake (strawberry-filled) and a groom's cake (an incredibly rich chocolate cake depicting the emblem from Battlestar Galactica). So many cake vendors insist on using toothpastey fondant to make their cakes look interesting - Simon Lee Bakery did just as well using buttercream, so not only were the cakes interesting but they were yummy as well. We were originally going to have the groom's cake actually shaped like the Battlestar Galactica, and they went to a lot of time figuring out the design for it and pricing. Unfortunately we could not afford it (which the pricing would have been totally understandable due to the time and detail it would have taken), and they were completely understandable about switching to the (awesome!) emblem. The only down-side about SLB, at least from our experience, was that they seemed to take a pretty long time with responding to emails. If working with them, I would definitely suggest using the good-old-fashioned telephone. Other than that, I have only good things to say about this wonderful bakery. read more

We had raspberry lemon, pina colada, raspberry whipcream, and tres leche... and they were all amazing (but you must try to tres leche...seriously)! Most wedding cakes are decent in taste, but these were beyond "decent", our guests are still asking me where we got our cake.. it was that good!! My husband and I tried several different bakeries in the Austin area before deciding to go with Simon Lee for both our wedding cake and groom's cake. We both felt that the cakes at most other bakeries were way too sweet and artificial tasting. However, Simon Lee's cakes were light, fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. We chose two favors for our wedding cake: orange mousse and tiramisu. For the groom's cake, we chose chocolate cake with chocolate mousse. We decided to order enough cake for 170 guests even though we only had 120 guests come to the wedding. A silly mistake, most wedding vendors will tell you (some stats say only 2/3 of guests will eat cake), but we had no cake left over -- I'm fact, some poor guests didn't even get to try some! We later learned that several guests had gotten multiple pieces of cake because it was just that good! I must also compliment Simon Lee for the artistic work they did creating my husband's baseball-cap-shaped groom's cake. The cake literally looked like two baseball caps stacked together, it was amazing. Several guests and myself included walked past the cake, assuming they were real caps! I docked a star for the higher price of the cakes and the sometimes sporadic communications with Simon Lee Bakery. We had to get our wedding venue (who recommended Simon Lee) involved at one point early on in the process when I wasn't getting any calls back, but after that, it was smooth sailing up to the wedding day. read more

Simon Lee Bakery was a prefered vendor for my wedding venue. I tried to get in touch with Judy early on in the planning process. I called their bakery phone for a solid week with no answer. I sent emails and left voicemails. Just finally answered the store phone one day and told me that it was too early to schedule a tasting (first red flag). I then tried to schedule a tasting back in November. This again ended up being like pulling teeth. It was extremely difficult to get in touch with Judy (second red flag). I finally had gotten an appointment scheduled for January. After all holidays. Judy had asked me on the phone multiple times when and where the wedding was, but we finally had a tasting on the books. I had sent an email early in the week to confirm our appointment with Judy. She responded that she had us down for a different time (big red flag). We worked it out to where we could come during our original scheduled time, which she ended up being 10 minutes late to. Found out we only had 30 minutes for our meeting, 10 of which she was absent for. We were given maybe 5 or six cake choices. None of them were outstanding. Some of the cakes seemed to be a few days old, the strawberries were old and mushy: almost to the point of greying, the piña colada and orange cakes were extremely strong and really damp, wet cakes. We were then told our only options for wedding cakes were the piña colada and orange cakes. This was soooo shocking. We wanted a simple vanilla cake with buttercream frosting, but then were told that the we would have to sacrifice a tier of our allotted three-tier cake to get plain vanilla (last straw). I really had a terrible experience working with Judy. I am happy to see people had better experiences though. Planning a wedding is stressful enough, the cake should be literally a piece of cake to plan, and sadly this left a lot to be desired. read more

I had heard not so good things about Simon Lee before I even went there. But because my wedding venue worked with them for a discount, I went anyways. First thing I was not happy with was the staff. When I called to make my appointment they acted as if they were soooo busy they might not have time to make my wedding cake, even though it was 5 months before my wedding, which is when my venue advised me to cal. They told me their only opening for a tasting was on a week day in the middle of the day, and basically it was then or not at all. Not happy, I called my wedding venue who even admitted they were difficult at times!! So the wedding venue called them to schedule my appointment for me, and what do you know, I got a more reasonable appointment time. So I show up for my appointment with sketches, knowing exactly what I wanted. It was probably one of the most simple wedding cakes ever, Three square tiers, buttercream frosting, and our initials in black fondant on the side. The staff member was really helpful (actually) and even asked if I knew what font I wanted our initials to be in, which I did. So the big day comes, and I see my wedding cake. It looked nice except that our initials were in white fondant on a white cake, so you couldn't even see them. The font they used was wrong too, they used gang-ish Old English, way way different from what I had ask them to use, and quite tacky looking. Luckily, because they messed up the icing color of the initials, you could barely see them. White on white doesn't even make sense, why would they do that? All and all my experience was stressful I should say, the cake was beautiful despite the minor mess-ups and it tasted good. But if I had not received a discount from my wedding venue, I would have been much, much more upset. I felt they were incredibly overpriced for the simple cake I ordered. Our first experience with Simon Lee was for our wedding in 2005. The wedding cakes--one bride (white with strawberries and cream) and one groom (chocolate with fudge icing) cake--were beautiful, delicious, and a good price for the quality. Since then, when a special event or birthday is coming up, we've called on Simon Lee. In fact, Simon Lee is so well-established as a household favorite, we no longer need explicit instruction to order a SL cake. It has secured the top spot as 'THAT cake,' as in: "Your birthday is coming up. What should we do?" "Sushi dinner." "With who?" "Jane, Tom, Frank, Lindsey." "What about dessert?" "That cake." "Okay. I'll order it tomorrow." Ordering is so easy--just know your flavor, number of people, and desired pickup date, and leave the rest to Judy. Ordinarily I hate ordering things sight unseen, but when it comes to Simon Lee, I never worry. They've not let us down yet. As with anything that's custom-made, the cakes at Simon Lee will cost you a bit more than your standard premade grocery store fare. But when it comes to special anniversaries, 40th birthdays, college graduation, and all those other once-in-a-lifetime events--I think these are events worthy of a Simon Lee cake. read more

We met Simon Lee Bakery at an Open House and instantly fell in love with their cakes. With going to all the bridal shows and open houses where you got to compare their cakes to others in town, there is no comparison. They gave you several flavors to sample from and their cakes have always been fresh, not overly sweet, and doesn't have that artificial taste you would get from coloring and excess sugar. Judy & Jad are an amazing team and Judy sat down with my now husband and I to ensure we got the exact design we wanted. Our personal favorites are strawberry grand marnier, red velvet, and the orange. Additionally, I ended up buying cupcakes from them for my nephew's birthday party and they came out perfect. When I did my tasting for my wedding I honestly never had cake so amazing in my life . The cakes are on the pricey side , but you get what you pay for . When it was time for my daughter birthday we got her cake here as well , and Judy did a beautiful job . We will continue to come here for cakes for family occasions. read more
