Yes play is slow and is crowded but not because it's a great course but because no one is working anymore and will take any tee time they can get. Management should reduce groups and add more ambassadors instead of trying to take advantage of the situation by being greedy. read more

I've played twice in August. A very nice course: great greens (save for one), lots of challenges, and good forward tees. The rangers hover a bit too much. Felt like every other shot was surveilled. Couldn't even order a hot dog and use the bathroom at the turn without our group twice being asked on the tenth where "the other twosome" was. It wasn't a Sunday morning. No food cart. It sure would help those hot Simi days. Bathrooms could be better marked, and have more access points. Overall I like the course but it was hard to relax and enjoy the round with Big Brother 'round every tree. read more

A solid golf course that has some challenging holes. I played from the black tees(6600 yards) and I thought the course was in good shape. Several holes with water and plenty of strategic sand traps as my wife would admit. Some dry areas but that's to be expected with the drought and all. The clubhouse has a decent selection of clothing and shoes etc. the weather was about mid 90's however their was a nice breeze on most of the holes that made it feel a bit cooler. read more

Ever since being diagnosed with a malignant melanoma, and having surgery to remove it (thankfully, it had not spread), I have been a bit paranoid (truly, in the clinical sense) of being out in the sun and risking triggering another cancer. However, I find it hard to stay away from the golf course. I learned to play here - at the tender age of 46 - and used to play Simi Hills a LOT . . . and I do mean a lot. I could play this course in the dark. Actually, I have - with glow balls. I easily recognized the picture of the cart path as leading up from the tee on number 5, for instance. However, I haven't played here much since becoming a father 9 years ago, until yesterday. Though I haven't played in a while, I did take advantage of the practice facilities during the summer because, with the kids out of school and sleeping late, I could get up early and avoid most of the sun. This is possible in part because the driving range, which is quite nice, sits next to a hill and the east side of it remains in shade for a couple of hours after sunrise. There's also a small chipping area (which is sometimes a bit overgrown and never quite like a real green, but useful for practicing this part of your short game), and a reasonably large practice green. My main complaint about the green is it's too flat and not very challenging. There's also a practice bunker off the entrance drive, but it's so far from the clubhouse I've never used it. They used to have a practice bunker at the far end of the driving range, but I'm not sure it's still there. It was reserved primarily for teaching pros and their students anyway. Using their online booking system I reserved a tee time for 3:00, reasoning that sunscreen, hat, turned-up collar, and moving to the shade often would keep me from too much exposure to the sun's rays. I played with two former colleagues and a single who joined us. Overall, the course was in excellent condition, though late in the day the greens tend to get a little bumpy after all the activity they see. After years of management by American Golf, I'm happy the Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks District has taken over the course. They've done a good job of maintaining it. Hole number six, which had been the number one handicap hole, had one of he nicest greens on the course and had deteriorated dramatically. Since I was last on the front nine, the hole has been redesigned by the addition of a large fairway bunker, moving some of the tees up a bit closer, and adding at least one level and some undulation to what was always a fairly ample green. The green was in great shape as well. On the 16th hole, a slightly downhill dogleg right, we had a pretty large gallery of rabbits sitting out-of-bounds to the right, a doe and two adolescent fawns (I uploaded a picture of them) grazing down by the green, and a mother duck leading four large ducklings as they waddled across the green . . . forcing one of my playing partners to wait before pitching onto the green. All-in-all, Simi Hills is a nice, challenging yet fair golf course; perfect for most golfers looking to have a fun round without spending an arm and a leg. read more

Our tee time was 1:00. By hole 3 there was a line of carts. We were waiting behind another foursome, who was waiting behind another foursome who was waiting to tee off. Then it was pretty much the same pattern, play a hole, sit in the grass and wait for anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes to tee off, play a hole and wait some more. It was 95 degrees and the only time we saw cart service was on hole one and at the turn, so bring a cooler as they don't want to sell you their beer or soda. We finished the first 9 in just under 3 hours. As some people gave up somewhere on the last 9 ( I know because they passed us up on their way back), it got a little faster. It took 5 hours and 40 minutes for what should be a 3-4 hour round. I will say the new bar is nice and unlike a year ago, they actually have enough staff at the clubhouse so that it's not one person doing everything and a 20-minute line to buy a beer like before. The problem is there is no cart service in the afternoon, so by hour 3 of your 6 hour round, there won't be anyone. I am happy to buy a beer for 8 dollars if I can buy it on the course and get it cold. If I have to pack it myself in my golf bag, I will just bring my own. It really makes no sense they don't want to sell you anything on the course after 3 when it's still packed until dark. read more

There is no course more in need of a course marshall than this Simi Hills. I played the front 9 in 1.5 hours and the next 4 holes in TWO HOURS! The back nine here is a nightmare! I left at 15, again this round the same as last time, because I can see the backup on every hole ahead. Why can't they get a marshall who knows how to do his job and keep things course moving? I almost never play here because of this and sure enough, today was no different. Is the back 9 harder than the front? I don't think so, so why does it play 3 to 4 times slower than the front? Something has to be done! It's completely ridiculous. read more

This is one of my favorite golf courses in the Ventura County area! The fairways are nicely sloped and provides some bad shot punishments. For example, if you slice right on hole two, you will have to punch your way through the trees or carry them. If you can recover from hooks and slices on this course can get away with par or better on every hole, you will be golden. I also live 3 miles away from here which makes it a local favorite. read more

We came here right after a holiday gathering and expected it to be crazy busy and low staffed. Sure enough it was busy but not in a bad way, we went to the driving range and about 10 minutes and sure enough two spots opened up and we began hitting balls. We had two adults and two kids and had so much fun hitting golf balls. This was a first for half of our party. We did encounter staff with regards to getting the codes to get the balls and they were very polite and helpful with their directions. The facility inside was really clean and outside looked beautiful. Most of the grass was nice and green and looked very much like a golf course should. All in all we will be back. read more

Was able to play a round here with my friends for my birthday. The course is kinda pricey, $60 with a cart. The course is in ok shape, I dont think its worth the high greens fees, especially when Rustic Canyon and other good courses are available in the are for about the same price. The experience didnt justify the fee in my eyes. Either way, the course is fairly challenging and there are narrow fairways on the majority of the holes. The rough is not too bad and the greens are FAST so beware. All in all a decent golf experience for Simi Valley, but not my favorite. read more

I don't know what has happened here whether it is purposeful neglect or the course is under the management of a new greenskeeper but this place has REALLY gone downhill. I used to love coming here because it was always better maintained than Encino/Balboa and was the same price but the last 3 times I have played here have been dreadful. Fairways completely dried out, lots of spotty dirt patches in the middle of the fairways and greens that are like concrete. I'm sorry but a 9 iron into a green should not bounce off like you hit a cart path. My other complaint is how slow it has become. One of the rounds I played here recently took the record for the longest round of golf I've ever endured. It was a random Thursday mid-morning tee time which should only play about 4 hours max and it took over 6 hours to finish. No tournament was being played - just packed with retirees playing at a snail's pace. Very disappointing. read more

This was my home course when I lived in CA. This course is one of my favorite course in Ventura County. Course appears to always be in very decent shape, which is more than I can say for a lot of the other course in the area. Service is solid, the driving range is serviceable. I really like the practice putting green, very large. They also have a great club fitter guy located next to the driving range. Anything you need done to your clubs, Jason's club shack is the man for you. Prices are also very reasonable, especially if you like walking. I do recommend booking a tee time because they can get busy. This course is deceptively difficult. The course designer did a good job of using angles, distance, and elevation to throw a wrench into one's confidence. Santa Ana winds can also wreak havoc in your game 3-4 months out of the year. At the end of the day, its a great course for someone who wants to work on their game without going broke. You will be forced to use a variety a shots. read more

Played my first round here this morning and I was absolutely, positively blown away. Course was in amazing condition, I live in Pasadena, I almost always play Brookside or course in the inland empire or in and around the san gabriel valley. But, the very quick and easy drive to Simi is something I will be doing more often (40 minutes or less to get there).. Fairways were in great shape, greens are amazing, bunkers have sand and nice sand..what was most impressive were the conditions of the tee boxes, level tee boxes, nicely mown and very well taken care of..Yardages are laid out nicely and easy to see, sprinklers were a little hard to find but the yardages on them were accurate..Beware the bunkers here are huge and very strategically placed..Layout is impressive and the course is very challenging but fair, not tricky or gimmicky. They actually mark the areas on the course that would be considered ground under repair that other courses would just leave them unmarked..Whoever is running this course knows golf, loves golf and wants the people playing there to enjoy it... I almost to give such a positive review, I almost want to to say its a mess don't go so it does not get overcrowded.. We had a 7 am tee time and we were done by 11:30 on a Sunday morning. Good job folks over at Simi this is truly a hidden gem and I hope it stays that way. read more

Played here for the first time recently on a Sunday morning. The threat of rain seemed to keep many away which lead to a nice 4 hour round. A decently long course at 6400 yards from the blues but feels much shorter which is enjoyable. Not overtly difficult very fair. The hole variation is outstanding, every hole is unique. The greens were fun with decent slope but the day I played they weren't lighting fast as some reviewers have stated. Fine by me, really fast greens are overrated in my book. My favorite thing about this course is the rough around the greens which is much more lush than you will find at most muni's. My least favorite parts were the in even bumpy tee boxes and hard dirt bunkers. Fair prices here, rack rate with cart is $55. Great course. read more

The course is a great challenge. The greens can be unforgiving at times. You have to know the course how it's plays with the slopes of the mountains around it. Beautiful views. Get out and play Simi's first public golf course This isn't a bad choice if you're looking for a place to play golf in Simi Valley or Ventura County. For a public golf course, it is fairly well maintained and somewhat challenging. Like with all of Simi, the wind can blow here. Course was designed by Teddy Robinson, who has done a number if courses in SoCal. Greens fees are fair. If you're looking for a place to hold a tournament, they will accomodate you asl well. Played this course for the first time a few weeks back at a company event. The company I work for had their annual tournament here this year and the course didn't disappoint at all. Fairways are in great shape (or at least they were before all of my duffer colleagues played it) and the greens were challenging but fair. What drought?!?! Very engaging hole design and a wonderful setting in the valley. Carts have onboard GPS and it seemed to be quite accurate. - A fantastic feature that I wish more public courses offered. The range on the other hand is a different story. Only a few spaces to warm up and it's all matts. I also don't recall having any distance references so I couldn't judge how well (poorly) my shots were traveling. Not a big deal, but it does matter to a player trying to get his game back on point. Past the range though I really can't say anything bad about the course itself. I live in WeHo and rarely have the chance to wander too far out of my neighborhood but I'm sure glad I did for this event. I've only played a few courses in the LA area and I live too far to make this one my "home course" but I'll be playing Simi Hills again, for sure. read more

Played there on 8th April. Riding rate was a bit expensive. The course is fine and most of the people are friendly....but the cart lady would not stop to offer my group any refreshments. She passed by us three times and not even a look in our direction from just a few feet away. To bad, I felt like tipping good that day. read more

What a great golf course and people who work there! Course is always in pristine condition and serviced by lovely people. There has not been an instance where I have come to the course at 530 to 610 am where the staff (Greg or others) haven't been able to get me on to play the back 9 or full 18 holes. I like playing this course, very nice. But AVOID THE DRIVING RANGE!!! Every time I've been here, the group of guys at the club shop at the range..not once...have ever shut up! We are trying to practice and it's like a freaking madhouse with all the chatter. Take it to the shed, not right on the range. Course is playing really nicely and is in very good shape considering the drought. Greens are nicer than Rustic and the fairways are all in nice shape. Bunkers are VERY firm and to be avoided on most holes. As others have said, most holes are pretty forgiving as the OB slopes up on one side and can kick poor shots fair pretty often. Overall a real gem of a public course that offers up enough challenges for the better golfers and is forgiving enough for hacks like me. Only real knocks are it can be slow at times with walkers/old timers and the jean short wearing crew that belong to the jacked up trucks in the lot... There is a beverage cart but it can be seldom seen at times so discrete BYBO is the way to go. Again, for a muni it's terrific and pretty affordable, highly recommend twilight rounds in the summer, you can get at least 14 in at a regular pace. read more

Nice course but expensive for no reason. Granted it a close to home... But I make a farther drive just to save money on nicer courses. I have no idea why this course is $55 on the weekends when there are a lot nicer courses in the next city. $55 might not be a lot of money for golf. But the courses around me are just as nice if not more so for about $40. The greens are nice and the grounds are well kept. Some really fun holes on this course. This course is a true gem. It's the best maintained course around. I often go late in the afternoon during the week to play a quick 9 holes. You can walk on and play 9 holes (or more) for just $10. I played 18 holes last Saturday and it took only 4 hours to finish my round. You can't do that on most courses around here. They encourage ready golf, but they don't get too pushy with it. read more

I've been taking lessons from Mike Metz for 3 years now so I guess this review is overdue. I was a total newbie, couldn't even play 18 holes in the beginning. Fast forward 3 yrs and I now play at least once a week and shoot in the 90's. It''s because Mike works with you swing, he doesn't try to give you a different one. Don't play in the city championship. Cost of 200 dollars gets you two rounds of golf, range balls and food. Wanted to get a cart for my family to come watch and have a good time and they tried to charge me 37 dollars a day. Complete joke. I've spent well over 2400 dollars at this course considering I live down the street. Jackie in the pro shop is the rudest / most unprofessional employee ive ever talked to in a pro shop. Always has such a terrible attitude and just wants your money and wants you to leave. Always a slow round. No one keeping pace of play. Like I said they just want your money and they don't care. If you're going to talk to anyone there I suggest speaking to Mike Metz because he is the only level headed individual who works there. Won't be playing golf here anymore. Always loved playing here but after being treated like dirt and basically feeling robbed, I'll gladly take my love for the game to another course near by. read more

Oh Man I don't know where even to start. This place is amazing. I practice here all the time and the people and staff that at this course are as friendly as it gets. The Pro Instructors who are Matt Williamson and Mike Metz are fantastic coaches. Then J's Club shack at by the driving range is the place to be if you want anything done to your golf clubs such as repairs are grip changes. The course is always in fantastic shape. The course can be challenging but it is not impossible. It is a great place to practice and a great environment to be in. I just can't think of a negative thing about this place. The only thing that is somewhat underwhelming is the practice chipping greens but everything else is fantastic. read more

typical city muni. 5-6 hour rounds, senior evrywhere walking because of special rates. pro shop is the size of a cubby hole with overpriced items sticking it to you if u forgot anything. restaurant manager a complete donkey, sorry I asked for ice due to 100 degree heat. course is pretty wide open so true hacks can feel good about their scores. very dry and greens bumpy. just exhudes muni in every way read more
