Rather than the smooth, consistent surfaces one…read moreexpects to putt on, you're met with a blotchy, uneven mess patches of thinning, discolored turf scattered across the surface like the green itself is suffering from some kind of chronic skin condition, all bald patches and inflamed splotches, as if psoriasis or alopecia had taken hold of the turf. Reading a putt here isn't a matter of skill; it's a matter of luck, because no amount of green-reading ability accounts for a surface this poorly maintained. The driving range fares no better. The mats are worn through, the turf beneath them is patchy and hard, and hitting off of it feels less like practice and more like penance. The equipment doesn't help matters. The push carts are relics, and the motorized carts aren't much of an improvement sluggish, battered, running on batteries that seem perpetually on the verge of dying mid-round. And when I tried to rent one myself with a valid license in hand I was flatly refused because I'm under 18. Fine. Rules exist. But when I asked, reasonably, whether I could rent one under my parent's name instead, the staff didn't just say no they laughed. Openly. In my face. That kind of contempt for a paying customer isn't an oversight; it's a culture. The grounds themselves are no better maintained than the equipment. There's an active construction zone bordering part of the course, and the surrounding area is littered with trash along the sidelines. The lakes on the property sit empty and stagnant, more of an eyesore than a water feature at this point if the course can't be bothered to keep them filled, it says a lot about where their priorities are. I also came across two dead birds during my round, which says something about the general upkeep of the place. There were also several people loitering around the course grounds, which didn't exactly add to the sense that this is a well-managed, well-supervised facility. And then there's the matter of restrooms or the lack thereof. There are no real facilities on this course, just a scattering of porta potties, while the one or two actual restrooms on-site sit locked and inaccessible for the entire round. Between the diseased-looking greens, the derelict range, the neglected grounds, and a staff that treats basic customer questions with open ridicule, Buenaventura isn't just an underwhelming round of golf it's an insult to anyone who pays to walk through the gate. I won't be back. Genuinely, I hope they get their act together fill the lakes, clean up the grounds, and treat their customers with a shred of respect because right now, I'd be surprised if anyone books a tee time there again.

I ask if maybe I could speak to a manager and she gave me the pro shop number that let back to her. It seemed like she was enjoying here power trip. For a course that plays the "sorry" card because they were flooded in 2023, they sure know how to drive their customers away.

The golden hour was casting a glow on an empty check-in table so my friends, Romy & Michele, and I grabbed available name tags and headed in. Lucky for us, arriving late and walking in the bar entrance meant NO WAITING. Staff for this event was young and friendly. Margaritas were made to order, not batched, delicious and packed a punch. Yay! But I was too excited to begin mingling and already side checked by old friends before I even had a sip. I barely had time to glance around at the furnishings, a mix of country club dining vibes and Craftsman hunting lodge warmth, before we were ushered out to the patio and up an elevated golf cart path to take a group photo. As we finished and slowly began making our way back to the outdoor patio, one final foursome came down the cart path. The outdoor area had all the necessary tables and chairs arranged and school colors highlighted the simple, but tasteful event decor. To one end was a large "U" shaped arrangement getting set with chafing dishes and iced trays for salad items. Steadily, eat table approached for their buffet dinner: dry spinach salad with optional DIY dressings, steak, ribs, bbq chicken, steamed asparagus fingerling potatoes, corn cobs and bread. I chose the steak, spinach sans dressing and asparagus. THE STEAK WAS SOOOO TENDER and FLAVORFUL! Around the various tables you could hear the praises being sung of that beef! The spinach was fresh and crisp and the asparagus was cooked perfectly. The chicken and ribs both looked very good and some said it was, but I skipped these finger foods for the sake of vanity and good impressions - both of which would've been left in the dust if this were just another Saturday night in the Conejo Valley. Throughout the night the service was efficient, friendly and very helpful. After the buffet dishes were removed, platters of cookies came out for dessert. These were THE BEST COOKIES I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! Romy was the first to try 'My GOD that's good! You have to go get the cookies!' Being loyal and obedient, I did. I wish they had been labeled, but then again, I've yet to meet a cookie I didn't, at the very least, think was ok, so I selected 3. One was a lemon (so refreshing (can a cookie actually BE refreshing???) following the steak dinner. The next was a chocolate chip, but it was somehow more than that. Slightly chunky, but oh so soft. The third was a soft and chewy, delightful snickerdoodle. By the time I had finished enjoying those, I heard raves from around me about the chocolate cake that suddenly was being PASSED AROUND by classmates who had decided the best way to prove how good the cake was was by absconding the entire serving tray, a handful of forks and approach anyone sitting without chocolate frosting on their hands and face! LOL! I managed to dodge the indulgently moist, chocolate-y dessert, but not without smelling the intense flavor from a few feet away. I think I want to come back for that cake! I understand they have live music on Fri & Sat nights, so I want to check that out in particular. Lots of free parking and well maintained facilities. Yes, I - for this review alone - am that person who does not have ONE SINGLE PICTURE of the venue or food. We had a 2 PM tee time but arrived early to warm up, and right away the atmosphere stood out. The staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly, which made a big difference as a newer golfer. Special shoutout to Jonny--he was bartending but also out golfing, and he took the time to give me helpful tips and even treated me to a coffee. That kind of genuine hospitality is rare and really elevated the experience. The course itself is beautiful. You get stunning Ojai valley views throughout, and the layout is both enjoyable and beginner-friendly while still being engaging. The grounds were clean and well-maintained overall. There are some areas with a running stream, which does attract a fair amount of bugs, but it's understandable given the natural setting. You can also tell they're actively investing in improvements--there was some visible construction, but it didn't take away from the experience. If anything, it shows they're working to make the course even better. Price-wise, it's a great value. It was about $20 cheaper than the Ojai Valley Inn course, which makes it a solid option without sacrificing quality. We ended up playing 9 holes since we had dinner reservations, but I easily could've stayed longer. There's also a restaurant on-site, which is a plus, though we opted for sushi elsewhere. If you're one that likes to hit from grass, do NOT come here. You are SERIOUSLY better off going to Huntsinger and hitting clubs. As an athlete my entire life it was my presumption that with proper instruction I would acquire a…read morefirm foundation of the golf swing. Therefore, eager to begin my golf journey I obtained golf instruction from Vanilla Gorilla Golf, as it seemed the most economical at the time. However, like the old cliché goes you get what you pay for. Understanding you can't learn golf in one lesson I signed up for a six-lesson package. Two out of those six lessons were spent working on the full swing. The four others included a putting, chipping, sand play, and on course lesson. Lessons are accompanied with a video review that includes voice commentary. Although I found it odd that I had to wait until after the lesson for an evaluation. It seems that perhaps an advanced teacher would be able to tell you how to improve during the lesson and make proper adjustments to do so. The on course lesson was rushed as we skipped from hole to hole awkwardly cutting in front of other golfers on the course in order for my instructor to get his video shot quickly. The one positive was the putting lesson. However, overall the true measure of an instructor is the progress of their students. For me, my minimal at best progress was accompanied with statements like "well looks like we need to sign you up for another package". Statements that help you see the true motivations of a businessman rather than a teacher. The techniques presented by Vanilla Gorilla Golf are non-existent in my current golf game, everything from the set up, grip, back swing, downswing and follow through. Currently I am not a PGA professional and will never be. Nevertheless, I am able to maneuver around a golf course with considerably less stress than when working with the Vanilla Gorilla "one plane swing". After cutting my losses and endeavoring on alternative instructional techniques that have allowed for success I would say skip the claims of becoming a better golfer in just one lesson. One last cliché; if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.
