Sure, you could mistake the strip-mall location for a converted Marie Calendar's, but once you sit down and are served one of their tasty calorific baked bread baskets its hard to care. Plus you gotta love the parking lot outside - yes, the suburbs do have their advantages. I ordered the ribs which were of the fall off the bone quality, tender enough to eat with a fork and knife and not embarrass yourself while on a date. But since I was with my Dad and my 1 year old, I followed the baby's lead and tackled the ribs with my hands a few napkins. (The baby didn't get the napkin memo.) My Dad ordered the fajitas and enjoyed them despite the fact he forgot about the large basket of flour tortillas that came with it. But who needs bread when you've got a plate of sizzling meat in front of you? That's right sizzling meat in your face, all day. You can even go fake vegetarian halfsies and order half portabello half meat as a combo. The only thing that seemed amiss was the margaritas. Not sure if they forgot the tequila or if they were rusty on making normal margs vs. their sugar bear prickly pear with a cherry on top special or whatever terrible excuse for a cocktail they were pushing. It felt a little TGIFriday's to order a standard margarita and then tried to be upsold on the frilly flavored drink of the month, but I understand--the more prickly pear juice they can get rid of, the less the employees have to chug at the end of the month to keep the backstock down. Or something like that. While you may be tempted to wait 4 hours at Sweet Water Tavern, you enjoy almost the exact same menu and employee vests and bolos here at Silverado, and possibly only wait 2 hours. read more

G.A.R. knows how to please with their corporate, team-service model. The ozzie rolls, cheese burger and prime rib never fail to please! The chicken tenders are a sleeper! In all my times visiting I have only had one sub-par experience during the early 4 o'clock early-bird dinner hour when catching a late lunch where we were helped by a strung out waiter and a food runner who appeared to be out of it as well. The girl running our food (tigers as they call them in the business) waited for me to clear room for her to set down our apps and the didn't care to not clang the plates against each other. She then curtly turned on her heel and went about her shift. It felt very slap-dash and unprofessional- not the type of service you'd receive at lunch or dinner hours. We did mention to our waiter that we honestly felt ignored and waited more than 10 minutes to order a second round of drinks and to have our empty plates cleared. An apparent manager (wearing a blue shirt & in training by the experience) did not introduce himself (and honestly acted more like a greeter than a manager) asked how were doing and we said fine. He asked to take our empty appetizer baskets and plate away at the end of the meal and left. Everything about that visit was very lack-luster. it was very surprising to receive that poor attention to detail from a manager. They did at least comp. our desert and the waiter offered a weak apology. There is also one particularly large and noisy party that frequents the establishment who we've unfortunately sat by multiple times. Their kids run around with reckless abandon like they own the place, they are obnoxiously loud on the phone at the table and very off-putting with frequent cursing. My party and many guests around were visibly off-put by their rude antics. In my opinion management should not allow them to continue dining at Silverado. Their drink selection is pretty good but my only complaint there is that they also have yet to make a perfect grey-goose dirty martini with extra olives that I have enjoyed many times at their sister locations.. I was not helped by my usual waiter Brooks during my single unpleasant encounter here. He is beyond 5 stars -- Ask to be seated in Brook's section and when you go there and you will leave happy 100% guaranteed. read more

Usually when I come to Annandale, I'm here for Korean BBQ or dubu jjigae. A couple of nights ago, my boyfriend and I were trying to find someplace to eat and we drove into Annandale. It was past 10 so our choices were limited. The BF saw Silverado and said we should eat there. I was skeptical at first since I've rarely eaten anything in Annandale that wasn't Korean or at least Asian (it didn't help that I was also craving Lighthouse Tofu). The restaurant closes at 10:30 and it was around 10:15 so I was afraid the kitchen was closing up. However, the server seated us promptly and brought out chips, salsa, and Ozzie rolls. When I found out that Silverado is a Great American Restaurant, I instantly felt better. I'm a big fan of the Great American Restaurant Group. My initial skepticism turned into instant relief. My BF and I ordered chicken fajitas to share. I'm so glad we did because the portion was definitely enough to share between two people. Chicken was cooked well with onions, there was plenty of guacamole, shredded lettuce, sour cream, and pico de gallo to top off the fajita, and the waiter refilled our tortillas when we ran low. Good service even for a fairly late night meal. They didn't rush us at all for which I was appreciative. Everything came out prompt and hot. I was craving a burger...but I wasn't in the mood for a long drive and I don't really like Fudruckers all that much. I figured Silverado might be a good bet, especially considering that I was alone and I could sit at the bar and read while waiting. The strip mall where Silverado calls home is pretty unique...with only the Quiznos being a staple 'strip mall type store.' The rest of the places were a little quirky...especially the tuxedo shop that was going out of business. They apparently also sell costumes, so the front window was full of giant furry animal heads (bunnies, ducks, monkeys) with a sign saying that all "Costumes 50% off." I had the urge to buy one since it would be fun to have, but I figured it might not be the wisest purchase. So, I went to get the burger. The place was pretty packed for a late Sunday afternoon, but the bar-area was relatively empty. I didn't plan on having a beer, but seeing the old couple next to me sipping on martinis just made me feel like a Guiness. I then ordered the Cheddar Cheeseburger. Silverado definitely has a vibe...an old west thing...and while generally I like that sort of thing, at this place it strikes me as a bit creepy. Maybe its the red striped shirts that the servers have to wear. The burger was actually pretty tasty. It had a charred taste, but was still pink on the inside, so I knew it hadn't been sitting in the corner of the grill all day. It came on a hearty bun with pickles and a diced lettuce mixture that had a slight taste of horse-radish. That was the really un-expected part...it wasn't overpowering - but it made the burger unique. The fries are a very thin variety, shoestring I suppose they are called. Lightly salted and peppered, they offer a nice accompaniment without being so heavy that you feel awful when leaving. So, as far as a place to sit at the bar, read your book, have a beer, and eat a burger...this place would get 4 stars...but as a restaurant as a whole, I can't give it that. The menu has always seemed sparse to me...it never has something I really want to eat (so I just settle for something) and the food is just ok. Every customer deserve the same professional service not pick and choose who you are going to be customer friendly. For one. I've been to silverado many times and this was the first time I've received very poor service. I had to ask for the specials for the day. I had to ask for utensils for me and my guest. Not to mention my Shirley temple was watered down and still looked like straight up sprite with a sip of grenadine. I wish the quality of service was up to standard like the next table. A place for 60-something rich divorcees who hit on the young male bartenders, and families who amazingly allow their kids to sit at the bar (is this even legal?) Food is okay--on par with Sweetwater. Nice Texas decor and smaller than Sweetwater. Don't come here when the bar shift changes--you will be ignored. I walked out one time, and told the hostess that I was ignored. Part of the same chain restaurants as Sweetwater Cafe and Coastal Flats, it has a personality of its own. One Sunday afternoon I ventured with some girlfriends for some great dining. I have been to Silverado before, their happy hour great and their mango martinis Yum! As I sat at the booth with the girls, I perused the menu, their selection of entrees were good, Brioche French Toast, Brunch Fajitas. My mouth was watering and my stomach grumbling a decision had to be made. I settled with the Grilled Filet Mignon and Eggs. So I placed my order and waited, the place is casual and comfortable, not to mention warm considering how cold the day was. The food arrived and it looked delish. The filet mignon was cooked the way I liked it, medium well. The eggs were not rubbery at all and their homefries, cut perfectly and cooked wonderfully. The portion size was just right for my appetite. My dear friend Anita, ordered their BRUNCH portion mushroom fajitas and let me just say this...she was glad she didn't order the lunch portion. It was huge! Portobello Mushrooms sauted accompanied with torillas, rice, beans and guacamole. It looked good! Saturday lunch/brunch. I had bacon cheeseburger, medium --very tasty, juicy. It came with fries that are skinny and salted, tasty, but they don't compete with the sandwich that was quite a handful. My friend had a special --mahi, mahi-- with asparagus and a side of something that was beans and mushrooms. She said the mahi mahi tasted great. She's a rather picky eater, and she even liked the beans side. Although we were both stuffed, I insisted on having a slice of the dessert on special which was a turtle cheesecake. I had mentioned to the waitress that it was my friend's birthday; with no other prompting, the photo shows how they decorated the dessert. I had hoped for a candle in the cheesecake. This was a candle in some whipped cream, Happy Birthday written on the plate, and other decor. I had asked for two plates and two forks. So we shared the cheesecake. The cheesecake was so good that we forced ourselves to eat it all. As a caution to others, if they ever offer the turtle cheesecake again, it's a tad rich for one person. The servers were very attentive. Yes, I'd definitely go back. The age group was from 15 to 75. And the restaurant filled in well for lunch. I saw two people walk in and sit who had mobility issues, and there was no problem. Although there are some tables in an elevated area, there is a lot of seating that's on the same level as the front door. Good place for an alternative to Asian food in Annandale! It's a chain restaurant, nevertheless it definitely feels more homey compared to other big names like Olive Garden and TGI Fridays. Get the bread basket for the fried rolls! But the salsa and chips is good as well. If you've ever been to Coastal Flatts in Tysons it's the same one, they're owned under the same company. My favorite here is the fajitas: it comes out steaming and sizzling and tastes amazing with the salsa and beans! Sometimes I don't even eat it with the tortillas, it's good enough by itself. I've also had the crabcakes here, and they were actually pretty good! The sauce is what makes them, the crabcakes themselves are standard. Overall, a bit on the pricey side, but the food is delicious and good if you're OD'd from Annandale's Korean food. read more

As is well established, Silverado is part of the Great American Restaurants and is southwest themed. Apart from my personal experience what can be said? They are clean, well-organized and you can use call ahead seating so you can minimize your wait time. With that in mind, here is my personal experience... Our entire meal included chips and salsa, fajitas for two and a mango margarita. The chips were fine, the salsa has something different going on it; a smoky sort of flavor. The smoky flavor would be well-liked by someone who is into those flavors (ie bacon, salmon, bbq...). The fajitas for two are indeed generously portioned and come with beans (pinto with ham), pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream, rice and cheese if you wish and with six tortillas (I believe). There is a lot of tender meat, but you might want to use a knife and fork to cut the steak into better bite-size pieces before you place it in your made-at-restaurant tortilla. The tortillas are actually quite yummy, they are thicker than store-bought and have a good flavor to themselves,making them an excellent canvas for carrying the ingredients to their final destination. The mango margarita did not live up to it's ripe mango goodness unfortunately. I informed the server and it was taken care of with a very surprising explanation. A manager explained that their mango margarita uses fresh mango puree that they make at the restaurant! I was very surprised to hear they use fresh mangoes, but perhaps they were not ripe enough to sweeten and impart their mango goodness to a margarita. Overall the meal was tasty and predictable for a Great American Restaurant. To break it down, The food: It's good, consistent, with care put into the dishes The value: The fajitas for two will set you back a bit over $30. The margarita will set you back $7 or $8 and some change depending on if you get classic or fruit. The experience: It's southwest themed, but not over the top. Huge fan of the GAR restaurants so I may be biased but I love this place. The only good non Korean place in Annandale also. The big difference between this place and the other GARs (they all have one theme) is the tex mex style. Most of the menu is the favorites like the southwestern egg rolls and the flour less chocolate waffle dessert. But the fajitas are amazing. The steak are the best as they have perfected the way of cooking them that no one else does. If you request medium rare they cook the high quality steak that way (with lots of butter and onions) and then cut afterwards so it doesn't come out with those dry strips. The homemade guacamole and the fish tacos that are both frequent specials are amazing. The service is good as always. They use team service and somehow it works. read more

If you're planning on making a reservation for a group of 20 or more, good luck. The arrangement they will tell you is "You may not be able to sit together, is that okay?!". Answer "Yes" at your discretion. Logically speaking, when making a reservation, you would want to sit in the same section with your group. Silverado's interpretation is, "You can dine randomly somewhere in the restaurant in groups of 5. Let's sit one table near the front, one table near the back, and two in the middle and have 4 different servers wait on you. We just want your business!!!" They should have just told us "No, we can't take your reservation." Saves both parties the hassle of dealing with 20 angry people. This is without mention of the restaurant making our party wait 35 minutes after an agreed reservation time of 6:00 PM that was made 5 days in advance. The planning arrangement was atrocious. Needless to say, we left this restaurant and sought alternative dining options. read more

Food here was very good. The complementary bread and chips/salsa are excellent. I had the fajitas with steak and chicken. The rice and beans were very good. The steak was overcooked (I ordered it medium and it came out well). I had several issues with the service. Service was overall very slow. It took a half hour for the salads and appetizers to come out. Entrees weren't served until we'd been there for almost an hour. My wife ordered a steak and wasn't given a steak knife (only a butter knife). I ordered an ice cream for my daughter and it was never served. I also didn't get a refill on my drink until well after I was done eating, and then I was given the wrong drink and had to send it back, and the correct drink never came. I ordered extra tortillas for my fajitas and they took close to 10 minutes to come out. I also noticed the table behind ours had several issues as well - incorrect orders and items that were ordered but never served. I noticed they complained to the manager. All of the Great American restaurants seem to be the same after trying a few of them. The food at Silverados is very similar to Sweet Water Tavern. Last time I tried the filet mignon and it was pretty good. My mother had the bbq ribs and it was pretty good. We went back with the rest of my family and I ordered a burger and was a little disappointed. The burger meat was a little dry and bland. Overall the food is average. I'd say the only above average part is the bread that comes to the table from Best Buns Bakery. read more

In Northern, VA, it's not hard to find decent food. It's close to impossible however to find people who love their job (or do a damn good job at pretending LOL ). Someone on the Washington Post live chat with restaurant critic, Tom Sietsma, asked him for a suggestion for a great steak in the metro DC area. I posted the following, but the livechat ended before it appeared. Believe it or not, Silverado (one of the Great American Restaurants, which is located in a strip mall on Columbia Pike in Annandale) has the best filet mignon in the metro DC area! It is $28.95 ish and you can choose your veggie plus it comes with choice of main menu salad, not the little ittybitty salads most places serve with a meal. It is very informal and attracts a diverse clientele. Sure, it is not likely on any food critic's list, but it's the best. Try it out! PS - I have retired and moved out of state. I always cave and get the lobster bisque to start. It's just SO GOOD. I was able to get to Silverado early enough to try the blackened prime rib before it sold out for the night. It was good but I filled up on chips and bisque while we waited for our entrees. Ended up boxing half my meal but it made great leftovers. My guy got the bbq ribs and he struggled to finish it, as the corn and crab chowder also set him back a bit. Our check w/tip was $91, and we had soups and 2 entrees and two cocktails. It's a steakhouse. Pretty typical check. Adequate service, no complaints...except that if I'm paying $91 for dinner I'd like to enjoy it without the cooks thumb prints on the rim of my plate, standard restaurant mistake. One of the few American food choices in Annandale anymore so it was busy on Friday night. We waited 25 minutes for a table but we hung out in the bar with a pager until we were called. You can always taste the freshness in the salsa and tortillas. Food always taste great and if you get the chance try the acorn squash (seasonal) it may be the best thing on the menu. I've Yet To Try The Silverado So I Decided To Try It Today After Browsing The Menu Online I Saw They Had Some Unique Options To Try Since Each Resturant Has There Own Twist On Dishes Which I Love! So We Usually Order Calamari And/Or Shrimp Option Which Ever Is Available. I Forgot To Call Ahead Before We Arrived Since I Know There's Always A Wait No Matter The Time, But We Got Lucky & Were Seated Immediately Upon Entering Since We Were Only 2. Off The Bat We Were Greeted And Ordered Drinks & Calamari For Starters. Got Our Drinks Quick But Upon Ordering Were Notified One Of There Fryers Broke So The Entree Options Were Not Available Since The Repair Wouldn't Be Done Anytime Soon If Ever, So We Changed Orders & Asked For All Ozzie Rolls But Given The Bread Roll Spread They Forgot To Ask For The Chips & Salsa. We Ended Up Getting Fire Cracker Shrimp & Filet Mignon Tips With Pasta Both Were Good & Finished With Warm White Chocolate Bread Pudding With Ice Cream. I guess I'm a hater but I don't see how this place gets 4 stars. It's a fancified Outback Steakhouse with higher priced food and better dressed servers. The food has typical oversized American portions but a whole lot of average doesn't make it above average. The flavors don't pop and they aren't creative or unique. They are just ok and that's fine but it doesn't merit 4 stars. Again it's one of those spots that seems to hit all the restaurant marks correctly: service, decent food, etc. But it's never a place I want to go to again and that's the ultimate litmus test for any restaurant: are you psyched to go back? If you're not, there's nothing sweet about that reality. 3 stars is what it merits and there's nothing wrong with that. But you can probably find something more interesting in the incredibly competitive DMV area restaurant scene. read more

Ha ha! I love John B.'s review! Agreed- I love the fact that there are plenty of good Korean restaurants there (being Korean, you appreciate that :)) but yeah, there is a definite lack of variety. Silverado fits the bill nicely. It's always packed when I go there. Table service is good and quick. The bar can be slow, but what do you expect? It's a bar, and they have plenty of other customers they have to cater to. That being said, everyone is very friendly, and yes, the bartenders do have a good pour. Gotta love that. I'm a big fan of the warm rolls, and the food is dandy. It's very similar to SweetWater (same owners), so there's not much deviation in the menus. One note- be prepared for 80's night. I would typically give this place five stars however the last time i went, was not a good experience. First off, the warmed goat cheese with spiced pecans salad is my to go. it is amazing! I typically get amazing service here however the last time I came, the waitress was TERRIBLE. she took forever to even say hello and get our drinks out to us. When asking about certain beverages from the bar, she couldn't answer them but instead of saying. 'let me check with the bar/bartender' she kept saying, i dont know and just standing there and staring at us. we finally called over a manager who was so very helpful and pulled her away and we got a new server. i love all GAR restaurants read more

One of our go to restaurants if we want good affordable food. Love the fact that this place doesn't take reservations and you can just call ahead. Sometimes you're just not sure what you want to eat and it's so convenient to know you can just call and have your name added to a waiting list. Makes it super easy to decide to eat here last minute. As far as the staff and food goes, the staff is very well trained and friendly like you'd find at all Great American restaurants. The food is great quality for the price as well. Some favorites include: -Fajitas. Even as a meat lover I will say the portobello mushrooms are probably the best choice. Full of juice, flavor, and texture makes it a perfect mix with the grilled onions, peppers, and vegetables. -Prime Rib. Like the prime rib at Mike's, this dish is full of flavor and juice. Only thing that sucks is its limited to just the weekends and the last two times I've gone they ran out. -Roast chicken over noodles. Tried this on a whim and it was delicious. Good crusty skin on the chicken and the brown sauce is sweet but savory. Great tasting and mixes well with the angel hair pasta that offers subtle substance. -Salmon and any other salad. Salmon salad is our favorite but all of them are good. Great portions and very fresh tasting. -Pork chops. Huge pieces full of flavor and very moist. Was afraid it would be too dry but it came out with as much juice as a medium steak. Portion was large and the variety of items on the plate offered great balance. -Ozzie rolls and chips. Both free so eat up! Anyone whose ever gone to a GAR knows the bread they offer is delicious and mixes so well with the sweet butter they provide. The awesome thing about Silverados is they offer chips and salsa for free as well. They have good beer too, including some in house brews. Service: One time, I came here with my sister and mother and the waitress was incredibly rude to my mother. The manager was watching and immediately came over to apologize. He gave us a $10 coupon for the next time we come! Haha! That was so sweet. The next time we came, the waiter was so attentive. My mom said he was the best waiter she'd experienced! He offered a free dessert because our dishes came a little late, but honestly I didn't notice. My sister had to rock, paper, scissors to choose the dessert! I lost to the chocolate waffles but wow they were good! I wanted pumpkin cheesecake! But, either way was probably a win-win. Food: They give you a lot! I usually get the filet mignon AND they can replace the salad with crab cakes if you ask! Hint hint! And my goodness, we got the fried oyster salad for appetizer and it was so good. This time, I got the market fish, which was sort of a miss for me. I don't really like burned marks but, this is a sort of grilly place where grill marks will be present unless you ask specifically to go easy on the burn marks. Silverado - I had the Hickory BBQ med, with no salt on fries, I know this is a Tex Mex place but there burger is one of the best - American Near Me - Annandale, Virginia

We have been to Silverado's a number of times and it has been a great experience every time. Occasionally there is a wait but usually no longer than 10 minutes. They bring this delicious bread to the table with this very flavorful butter. I think it may be a some kind of honey butter but could be wrong. They give you an assortment of breads but we only like the raisin pumpernickel bread, and these little beignet like puff balls. Not sure what the other breads are because after the first time we were there we tell them to only bring our favs.No apps, just bread and a nice glass of Blue Moon gets the dinner started right. AS for dinner, we've had almost everything on the menu. We like the fact that they have a different special dish and soup every night of the week. Tonight Yana had the Sauteed Chicken Breast with roasted red peppers, mushrooms & arugula on capellini pasta & brown butter sauce. She liked it so much that she didn't finish so she could take the left overs home for lunch tomorrow haha. I had a tennis match right afterwards so decided to go light with my Hickory Burger with a mound of shoe string fries. I needed something filling to soak up my Blue Moon. The food was once again fantastic. No dessert this time because we were stuffed as usual, but they are nice. Definitely try the full rack of ribs if your ever there. They are very tasty as well. Note: Don't forget anything there like your purse because you might not get it back. Yana forgot her gift bag with $200 in gift cards to the Palms Restaurant and we called the next day and nowhere to be found. Was it the server, hostess or the bus boy? Always good food here. We got the steak tip pasta, crab cakes and chicken fajitas - each were hot and delicious. Service was attentive as well. Would definitely return and recommend. read more

I am happy to report that this place still rocks. I had visited in January, but had been disappointed. Gave it another try in March for a birthday. It was a vast improvement. Was very happy. Service and food was up to the usual standard I had expected. Did call ahead seating. Was given a nice table by the window. Meredi was a super server. She was awesome. Blackened Prime Rib was great. Both parties loved it. Key Lime pie was divine. Happy Birthday desert was a hit. Manager came around to the table to check on things. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back. Maybe I only really loved this place because it brought me back to the suburbs - after 10 years of college town and city living, who can blame me? It's been awhile since I've stepped into a large, open restaurant spilling out the door with family after family and the neighborhood crowd gathered 'round the bar. But I don't think so. I also loved this place for the doughy, sweet balls of goodness they brought me for free before the meal (amongst other decent slices of bread with a whipped butter) and the free (I'm assuming house-made) chips with the best restaurant salsa I've had in a long time. This positive experience led both my friend and I to sample their fajitas -- and what everyone says is right: these sizzling suckers rival the best Mexican joints serving up the same for their huge serving of juicy, succulent grilled portabellas and chicken breast and downright sinful tortillas. I usually try to steer clear of the tortillas, knowing full well that they're chock full of calories, but tonight, I just couldn't keep myself away. Their beans were nothing special, the rice was just right (basmati, I presume?), and they even substituted additional guacamole for the sour cream at no extra charge. I ate all my fajitas, so I had to leave without dessert. Crying shame, because that bread pudding was calling out to me. Next time! read more

Ok so I was buying food for an office and I called while I was driving to place an order and they told me I couldn't place a pick up order... Even for 10 people! Needless to say I should have gone somewhere else because after I placed my order at the bar, about 15 minutes later the food was ready. Two managers walked up to me carrying he containers of food and when I asked for a bag, they said they don't have any! I was so pissed because how am I supposed to carry this food up 2 flights of steps without a bag! They went to the back and found me a box which helped carrying it but looked so weird walking into this office I was treating to lunch! Than, I realized they didn't give me any utincles for the salads I ordered! I won't ever Oder or eat here based off the horrible take out service. The food wasn't event good! Smh read more
