I waited to see if the pain would subside, but it continued, so I googled dentists and found Dr. Daniel Haeussner on Yelp. Called and talked to Kara, who was so kind a welcoming and they fit me in the same day to see what was going on. Everything from their lovely office, to their friendly staff, to their service was top notch. Kim, my dental assistant, quickly put me at ease and assured we'd address what the issue is as she took X-rays and made me comfortable. Dr. Haeussner came in and let me know everything looked good in the X-ray. He asked if I had been stressed lately (who hasn't!? But my job has been very stressful lately) and thought I may be grinding my teeth. He asked if I had also been experiencing headaches, which last week I had terrible headaches, so much so I got a Covid test just to be sure! He did a bite test, and even when I thought there is no way this pain is coming from grinding, he was sweet and did another one just to ease my concerns. He recommended a warm compress and anti-inflammatory. I could not believe this was causing this sort of pain, so I was so relieved to hear the news! I thought for sure I needed emergency filling or root canal. My dad is a dentist in Michigan and so this was my first experience outside of family. Dr. Haeussner assured me there were no major concerns and I appreciated his honest, sincere compassion with the situation. Funny enough, we laughed how my dad is also named Daniel, and I saw the Dr. Dan of St. Augustine. Anyone who is looking for a dentist, look no further! And this is coming from the daughter of a dentist. Thank you Kara, Kim and Dr. Haeussner for taking care of me while I was away!

The front end staff is the nicest and friendliest group I've ever seen at a business in Saint Johns. Make sure you request an appointment with Dr. J. No, he didn't play in the ABA or NBA. His dental philosophy is the less drilling the better for your long term dental care. I had to have a crown put in where on had fallen out and was no where to be found. Dr. J. went above and beyond to make sure the temporary fit perfect. They also have state of the art equipment to find cavities under previous fillings and crowns to prevent possible very expensive root canals down the road. I've tried more than a few dentists in Saint Johns since moving here about 15 years ago and Dr. J at Beachside Family Dentistry is by far the best. Add in the friendly staff who many knew me by name the 2nd time I walked in the door one can't lose.

So I call to make an appointment and I'm told new patients have to come in for two appointments almost back to back. Ok a little different but whatever. I also make sure to ask that they except my insurance. She says yes they do so wonderful I am a happy customer. The first visit is to be a very thorough visit with all kinds of photos and things that I have never done before. The second visit would be for the cleaning. Well the receptionist called me a few days before my visit and asked if I could stay for the cleaning. I was a bit confused as this was to happen on the 2nd visit but it wasn't a problem and I told her I could stay. I asked once again if they had checked with my insurance company and she said yes everything was good. So on the day of my appointment, I check in and then the office manager calls me back to her office. Weird. She lets me know that they are Out-of-Network and she is not sure how much will be covered by my insurance and how much I will owe. So I was not happy and it did not give me a good first impression or visit. I will say the hygienist who cleaned my teeth and apologized profusely was very nice and so was the dentist. I think the front office needs to be upfront and do a better job. Maybe this is their way of getting people in there and getting money. The jury is still out if I will go back. It will depend on when I receive my bill and see how much I owe.

I called Alexander Dental and explained the situation. Dr. Alexander explained they had a digital scanner that could scan the surface of the tooth area and upload the file for a the tooth to be made and this would greatly decrease the time between the first visit and the second visit so it could all be done while i was in Florida. True to his word he was able to scan the tooth on Thursday and by the following Wednesday, just two days before Christmas I had the the new tooth and a cleaning. His office staff (lead by his his lovely and attractive wife) were very helpful and friendly. Dr Alexander was attentive even though he was very busy (everyone getting perfect teeth for their Christmas photos i guess) and made sure I understood exactly what was going on and answered all my questions. I still have outstanding work that needs to be completed, including a cleaning and crown replacement, and now one of the teeth they worked on is causing severe pain. At my initial appointment, they collected payment and told me they could complete all of the planned work in a single visit. Although I was surprised, I agreed. After completing work on two teeth, they instructed me to take a one-hour break. The break wasn't long enough to go home, and I couldn't eat because of the dental work, so I waited in my car. When I returned, they numbed me again, checked my mouth, and then asked if I could reschedule the rest of the treatment. When I tried to reschedule, they attempted to push the appointment out another two weeks despite the fact that I was already experiencing significant pain. I insisted on being seen sooner and was able to get an appointment the following week. At that appointment, they still weren't able to complete all the fillings as planned. Only part of the work was finished, requiring me to return for a third visit and miss even more work. While I was frustrated, I tried to be understanding. Now I've received an additional invoice for more than $500. When I contacted the office to resolve the issue, I was told that I had said my "card didn't work" and that I would call back. That never happened. What I actually said was that I didn't have any more time to spend waiting in the office because I needed to get back to work, and that they should call me to explain why there was an outstanding balance after they had already collected payment upfront. The billing process was confusing from the beginning. If staff are attempting to collect payment, they should be able to explain account balances and charges instead of requiring patients to wait for a treatment coordinator. They should also ensure that treatment estimates accurately reflect the work being performed and schedule patients appropriately if they cannot complete the procedures as promised. I am not someone who complains without offering solutions. This office could significantly improve the patient experience by implementing a few basic policies and procedures: Confirm before treatment whether all scheduled procedures can realistically be completed during the appointment. Provide explanations whenever treatment plans, timelines, or costs change especially at check in. Train front-desk and checkout staff to explain balances and payment discrepancies before requesting additional payment rather than having to wait for the treatment coordinator post appointment. Establish a policy that patients experiencing pain receive priority scheduling when follow-up treatment is needed, specifically when the dentist reschedules. Conduct a final billing review before collecting large upfront payments to reduce unexpected charges later. After three appointments, missed work, ongoing dental issues, severe pain, and now unexpected additional charges, I am extremely disappointed with my experience. Patients deserve transparency, accurate scheduling, and clear communication regarding both treatment and billing.
