Came here for Dim Sum with my family and parents on a Sunday. They were busy but managed to get a table. Food was excellent. We had the usuals ha gow, jar leung, chicken feet, siu mai, nor my guy and some more western fare like ginger beef and spring rolls. Everything was yummy. It's been awhile since we had been back here. They have the rolling carts which is always fun. Get to see the food before they give it to you. It's a bit on the expensive side - more so then other dim sum places. So if you have a large party expect to pay. I notice that some other tables had regular menu so you can do that as well. The five of us had a very pleasant dim sum lunch on our last day prior to flying back to the States after completing a tour of the Canadian Rockies. I found the restaurant doing an online search of Chinese restaurants in Calgary Chinatown. Looked up the restaurant and found they've got a website. Their sister restaurant is in Banff. On our tour, we were in Banff. Our tour guide said the Banff location is very popular and reservations suggested. Here in Calgary we went to dim sum Monday around 11:30am. The restaurant is located upstairs. No elevator as far as I could tell. And very steep stairs up. We were seated immediately. Ready to order tea but it just came in an insulated pot. Maybe they assumed we didn't know how to order tea??? Just a few tables of folks eating. As time passed, the restaurant began filling up. We were very pleased with the dim sum. Dim sum pushed on a cart. We got the usual offerings. If something wasn't on the cart, we asked. Then later it was brought to our table. Food fresh and good size portions. Two shoutouts - the har gow and the steamed shrimp rice roll. Huge size shrimps. We all left very content. Side note: my sister charged lunch. The guy upfront at the counter immediately charged her USD on her credit card. He didn't give her a choice of charging in CAD or USD. How come? We visited from out of town. We reviewed the menu asked a few questions and placed our order. The staff seemed helpful. We were served our hors d'oeuvres, but waited for an extended period for main course orders. When we checked with staff we were assured it was coming. After waiting another 20+mins we inquired again to learn that the order for dishes was never given to the kitchen. Service was quite defensive. We are an adult family of 4. We ordered 8 dishes at $209. And we tipped the driver 15%. On dish was 1/2 duck for $40. We received about 17 very thin slices of duck which were mostly fat, and 3 or more pieces were just empty skin. We felt very disrespected as customers and ripped off. Wish I could recommend this restaurant. Had 2 days in Calgary with family and we all love Chinese food. Unfortunately, the food here is really subpar at best. The wonton soup had broth and wontons, that's all. The broth tasted like it came out of a carton. No veggies or chopped scallions on top and tasted very bland. It's too bad and very disappointing. The chicken hot pot was a little better but again not worth coming back. Also way too expensive for the quality of the food. read more

My choice of Silver Dragon was somewhat impulsive - did a quick Yelp check, read one review that said "...this one was the good stuff" so I went with it. My overall review is that yes, it's A-OK, but that's about it. If you're looking for Chinese food and you're in the area, I suppose Silver Dragon will do. The menu is large and if you're a table for one you probably don't want the usual three or four family style servings. The waiter suggested the dinner for one (back page) and after giving it a cursory look said "fine." What I got was hot and sour soup, crispy beef, fried rice combo (shrimp, pork and ?), and a mixed vegetable stir fry (bok choy, mushroom, water chestnut, broccoli) which was too salty. I added an order of Har Gow which were stuffed with shrimp but were somewhat tasteless and the wrapper was rubbery. We came to Silver Dragon for a late night dinner right before it closed. The moment after we were seated, the waitress started recommending us a fish dish. She tried a few times. I really think that she wanted to get rid of the fish before the end of the day as it might not be fresh the next day. I just don't like that hard selling. In town for a little bit and stumbled across this Chinese restaurant. Being Chinese myself, I was able to differentiate good from bad and this one was good stuff. My mom, being from HK said that THIS is how it's done! It gave her memories from way back when she lived there. If we could visit again, this would be the place to go! We went to get the hai gow (shrimp dumpling) and shew mai (idk what it's called in English but it's like a pork steamed dumpling looking dish) and honestly, anything you see appetizing on the carts, eat it and taste it! Today, a friend of mine and I decided to satisfy our craving for Chinese food by going to the Silver Dragon Restaurant. Although the restaurant was not full as usual there were still a good number of tables occupied. We passed on Dim Sum and instead ordered hot & sour soup, pineapple and chicken fried rice, the Silver Dragon Chow Mein Special, Crispy Chicken and for dessert Almond Jelly with Fruit Cocktail and Steamed Custard Sponge Cake Yummy. Everything was delicious, the staff were so friendly and helpful and the restaurant was impeccably clean as always. I am never disappointed going here and highly recommend it to anyone. read more

Good fast dim sum cart service. Actually can get someones attention for requesting pop, water, sauces or ordering off menu. Love that they do reservations on the weekend for groups of 8 and over. Also noticed that every time we have come, there is a couple different dishes coming out of the kitchen which helps us change things up to try something new. Thought I'd give these guys a try after years of going to golden inn. I used to come to silver Dragon Restaurant for years. I got delivery and it was soooo bad ! I'm can't even eat it! Salt and pepper seafood was soggy (batter falling off)as was the ginger beef. The noodles had more oil than noodles. I was very disappointed as they used to be good and are ridiculously expensive. 4 dishes, a few spring rolls and a very small steamed rice 108.00! Also portions were tiny! I will never go back! I am currently working in the calgary area and decided I wanted to give local chinese food a chance. I googled "best chinese food in Calgary" and this was listed as the best so after perusing their online pictures and a few reviews I decided to order. This was single handedly the worst food I have ever ordered, let alone the worst chinese food i have ever had. The bbq pork fried rice was bland and tasteless. The honey garlic spare ribs tasted like the sauce was cut with dishwater and ended up immediately in the garbage after a few bites. Pineapple sweet and sour chicken balls were the best thing i ordered as long as you avoided the sauce which just was not very good. $51.90 for 3 very low quality poor tasting dishes is way too much. I would avoid this place at all costs and try to find a place that values serving their customers quality dishes. Very disappointed..."best chinese food in Calgary" is the biggest bs statement I've read in a while. Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere. read more

This place has been around for decades. I use to come here as a kid. I believe it opened in the 1960's. When I was that young kid, years ago I really looked forward to eating Chinese food. It was a real treat back then, because we only did it once or twice a year. Now that I'm an adult myself, I can go practically anytime I want. Also now there are literally 100's of Chinese restaurants and you have to risk it and try it for yourself to see if it's any good. I find everyone has their own favorite Chinese restaurant. If you ask 10 people, you'll get 10 different answers. This place has passed the test of time, being one of the original places in Chinatown itself. I've had everything from eggrolls, to peking duck, and almost everything in between. The food is always consistently good, and the prices are a little above average. I did go here for Dim Sum not too long ago and my experience was just okay. They put us in a small room by the front entrance, where we stared into a fish tank where the fish looked totally bored. I think because we were placed in that area, the food carts came out a little slow. Otherwise the food was good. Try this place, that is one of the only original Chinese restaurants since the 1960's. Secret hint: come around 115-130. Most of the traffic will have died down and you can request the servers for specific dim sum and they make it fresh. I think that's what made this an over the top experience. We got har gow, cheong fun, shumai, lo bak go and ham sui gok. Lo bak go is crisp and turnipy. Har gow is pretty standard. Char siu cheong fun I would personally not get again - the pork doesn't quite taste like char siu. But man, the shumai and ham sui gok is where it's at. Perhaps its because we got it fresh, but the ham sui gok came straight out of the fryer, crisp yet chewy and glutinous - maybe a bit more filling would be nice, but its so good, who cares? And the shumai is the best - lots of pork, delicate wrapper - super juicy, nice spring to it - my wife said it was one of the top best things she's ever eaten. it's a bit on the pricier side for dim sum, but if you're willing to pay, its definitely a nice place to go. read more

This is probably one of the best dim sum places in Calgary, there are a number of other places to get dim sum, but if you're looking for a scented food great service carts that are fully loaded this is the place for you. Went to Silver Dragon on a Sunday late morning. What to eat after a night out? Dim sum of course! Anyways, I have been here before and this place still is great. Love how the dim sum cart pushes were all dressed up in their best Stampedey attire. Awesome! Food was great. We ordered a ton of dishes (check out my other review if you want to see) but we essentially ordered the usual dim sum affair with a few new dishes. Four people for around $60 - totally worth it. Warning - huge lineup down the stairwell when we left so make sure you get their early enough or you will have to wait! read more

This is a place you come for food and not so much for the service, especially during the busy dinner rush. We arrived and waited a few minutes as the host wasn't to be seen. We were seated by the foyer and found the restaurant a bit noisy for a Saturday evening. The waitress came to bring us water and plates with forks and knives. I was glad she also brought us bowls with chopsticks later. Although it wasn't on the menu, we were able to order fish congee and gai lan plain with no meat, and also ordered beef and green peppers with black bean sauce and chow fun. The congee arrived first and it was a huge bowl. We consumed about 4-5 bowls and there was enough for another 5 more bowls. Our other food didn't arrive so we asked another server and he went to check. His excuse was we are very busy, which I can see but the timing of the food could have been better. The rest of the meal arrived shortly after and it was tasty. There was too much for the 2 of us so we had food for the next day. Not bad for $37. When asking for take out containers and cutlery, the waiter made us feel like we inconvenienced him and although he bought us what we asked, he made it known h was bothered. Yes, when I went there with my friend Leslie Rasporich, we'd go on Sundays because that was when the Dim Sum was available and we always enjoyed it very much. Vibrant and festive restaurant atmosphere. Nice and friendly staff. Very attentive to customers' need. I cannot speak to this place's atmosphere or service because we only ordered take out. That being said, the three star rating fully represents Silver Dragon just being "okay." The onion cakes and pork steamed buns were pretty good. The chicken and mixed vegetables were bland, while the salt and pepper squid wasn't very crispy. Please note that I only came here for dim sum and have never ate from the menu. The entrance to this restaurant is met with 2 flights of stairs, and as far as I know there's no access for disability. I liked the atmosphere, calm, relaxing background music, and clean. We ordered hagao, siu mai, and lo mai gai. All of them were tasty and filled my stomach real fast. Found this place online, saw the words "sticky rice" and had to go check it out. Hardly any Chinese restaurants make sticky rice anymore. Arrived before dinner rush. We ordered an egg roll. It was the biggest egg roll I have ever seen. Ingredients were tasty (pork, shrimp and sprouts). The fried shell was a bit oily but overall was a good egg roll. Yet what did I come for? Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf. Had the traditional mushrooms and sausage in it. And it was delicious and worth the venture downtown. I also had the Szechwan Chicken. It too was a mouthful of flavor.
