My travels took me north to Calgary. Dropped by Rodney's for a Tuesday lunch. What a treat. I would say the composite rating is a tad low. Definite 4.5. The servers were great. The service was also incredibly fast. It was Taco Tuesday and the tacos were great. They were haddock and perfectly fried. The aioli was great and little messy (in a good way). They have a hot sauce carousel from mild to wild as they said. I mixed the last 2 and that was the magic touch of spice and garlic. The oysters were great and perfectly shucked. As many people have mentioned, it definitely seems to be better to go during Happy Hour (and more worth it then). Unfortunately, we were visiting and only had one day during lunch to come by and check out Rodney's Oyster House. The first thing was that during lunch time, this place is EMPTY. Maybe it was an off-day, I'm not sure but we were by ourselves in this large restaurant. For the food, we tried a few things such as oysters, clam chowder, calamari, and fried clams. The clam chowder was my favorite of everything we had, pretty good overall. We tried a few different oysters, they were decent/average. The fried food were also just okay. Overall, since it wasn't happy hour prices it did feel a bit overpriced for what you get. Quality-wise, it was okay but I've definitely had better. In summary, I would only recommend going for their happy hour deals. read more

As always great food and drinks in a comfortable cheerful setting. The menu has excellent seafood choices including oysters. Good wine list as well as craft brews and signature cocktails. The clam chowder is delicious and I always enjoy the fish tacos. A couple of notes, service has slipped recently. For example our food arrived piping hot but without cutlery. By the time we flagged down a server and got forks and knives our food was warm-ish. Also ordered a plate of fries that came with a quarter inch of ketchup in a small cup (is ketchup really expensive now?). My husband and I are from the states and came here for Happy Hour on a Tuesday, it was well worth it! The place is coastal theme and staff was all friendly. Food came out in a decent time frame! Great happy hour, great ambience and great fresh and flavorful food with a nice presentation. The staff was super polite and helpful and answered all the questions I had on the menu. Let me caveat my 3* review. Food was 5*, Service was 3.5*. The reason for the low * is I had made reservations 3 weeks before asking for a table with low chairs as I have a young child. When we arrived place was packed and everything was full. So it did not start on a great foot. We came during happy hour and we ordered way too much food. The food was so good. The Half Dozen oyster + Drink was a great deal - we got 3 orders. We also got 3 orders of the Haddock Tacos - Yum and great portion. Calamari was great. Mini Crab Cakes not so much. New England Clam Chowder was great - one of my favourites. The caesar salad tasted bitter. They also made a mistake on my order; I wanted the chilled marinated mussels but they gave me mussels and fries which were also more expensive. Our waiter also could have come by a bit more and so also why the low marks. I think we will come back again (without kids) during happy hour but not order so much. read more

First off, GO FOR HAPPY HOUR! Great prices on a good variety of apps and it goes until 6pm, whereas plenty of places in the city cut theirs off at 5, so it's perfect if you're someone who wants to have dinner at a more normal time, haha. Rodney's is the full package. Good quality seafood plus a fair few dishes for the not-so-marine-inclined. Reasonable prices for what it is. The service is outstanding -- a casual vibe but you will always feel taken care of, and if you're the conversational type, you'll end up feeling quite friendly with your waiter by the end of your meal. They keep up well even when it gets busy and always have the answers to the most random of questions about the menu. Accommodating, too! One dish in particular is only served during happy hour, and my waiter hacked the system a bit for me so that I could have that dish as my main even though happy hour was ending. Good selection of oysters but we aren't 'oyster people' so I can't speak much more to that. The dinner plates are all good but the apps and small plates are where they really stand out. Our all-time favourites? Chilled marinated mussels (my dining partner had never tried seafood beyond fish & chips or cheap sushi, and he took one bite and declared them the best thing he'd ever tasted) and the scallop sliders. Those sliders are a religious experience. It can get quite busy and loud so I wouldn't recommend it as a place for a romantic dinner necessarily. The vibe is upbeat and bright even in the evenings when the lights are dimmed, surely supplemented by the delightfully high energy of the servers. Happy hour apps plus two dinner plates ran us about $110; portions are mostly average relative to value. Perfect for both the experienced and tentative seafood eater. I have to come back and try dessert, but from what I've experienced at Rodney's thus far, I imagine it'll only give me more to rave about. read more

Went for a business lunch. Service was extremely slow and unfriendly. There were only 3 tables occupied yet lunch took over 2 hours. This would be fine for a night out, but not a business lunch. We had to constantly ask for everything (silverware, a drink, the check). As a result, I only tipped 15%/$55. Our server was less than impressed, and as we exiting, my coworkers overheard her call me a b*tch. We were very polite, and did nothing to warrant this except for the bad tip. I called the manager. He said he would speak with the server and call me back. He never did. My office is a block away and I frequented this restaurant monthly. Never again. read more

For our first dine in restaurant experience during COVID-19, I picked Rodney's. The tables are already spaced so there's plenty of room in between diners. The front door and bathrooms are propped open so you don't have to touch anything. There's sanitizer at all the tables and in the washroom. If you don't want to touch a paper menu, there's an app you can download to view the menus. All staff wear a mask, but that doesn't deter from the excellent service we received. We tried oysters, fish tacos, calamari and fried oysters. My favourite were the west coast oysters and the tacos. The batter on the fish tacos was light and crunchy. I could tell the oil was really fresh. The portion of fish was generous and perfectly cooked. I liked how the slaw was on the bottom, so that the fried fish stayed crunchy and hot. The contrast between the chilled slaw and the hot fish was refreshing. The restaurant was full, but considering the food, service and ambience, there should be a lineup to get into this place. read more

Rodney's Oyster Fest for The Mustard Seed was a blast! The entrance was $38.00 (tax included ) available online. I highly recommend going! We'll go again next year and grab some friends and go for just the oysters with oyster-loving friends when we go again! The décor is wonderful modern nautical and clean, if quite adult in some places with pictures and merch on the adult side. There are several levels and at the Fest there were three bars set up and we discovered Montana Coffee product hiding in the corner and it was delicious! The $5.00 tickets got you six oysters or a cheese burger that fit nicely in he hand or a mini-fish and chips or calamari. There was also a veggie curry. The 2 original tickets that came with admission got you a drink and 6 oysters or 1 serving of the other offerings. It was a family friendly event with some families there, but it wasn't child inclusive. There weren't any child-focused activities but there was great lemonade and the oyster shucking competition for older children. It was loud, though and the DJ was loud enough to thunder over the crowds and did his job well. The yellow shirted volunteers were helpful and kept the place clean and organized. Came here for lunch and I was surprised that there are hardly anyone here. Its not busy at all, unlike the Vancouver location. We ordered mussels and lobster rolls. Well they ran out of the lobster club house and we were told the lobster roll is better. I have to say the Lobster Roll was delicious. mussels are so so and not like wow The menu is totally different from the Vancouver location. I have to say the Vancouver location is better. Again, Calgary isn't big on seafood and there are not a lot of seafood restaurants. Its not bad. But I really love the lobster roll. Only issue is that its very small. read more

So less than 24 hours than I expressed my distaste on our experience, and I want to be clear the food was amazing but the service that we experienced was not. The manger phones me and actually wants to talk to me. Not to give me a token gift certificate, and just do his business, but actually wants to talk. And he listened. He really listened. And apologized. Wow. That is a person that cares for his business. And I was clear. It was nothing about his food, but his the service we received. He owned it. And he also spoke about his realities which made me think differently too. He asked what he could do do change. This is a true visionary to his dining. I have to say that I am not critical often, but what i have is either silence or a 10 percent coupon for the next time. This was completely different. He actually took the time to call me on his own to ask what he could do better. Wow. This place is well worth your time. I want to go again just based on a phone call...and the food is super amazing . So thank you. I will stress that this best response I have EVER had in to a complaint in 456 reviews that I have done. I ordered fresh oysters on a half shell with all their sauces. $26 (plus $1.95 per sauce ) Oysters were great and I really enjoyed trying all their different type of sauces. 5/5 My favourite sauce was the "white boy soul" New England Clam chowder- 2.5/5 not my favourite and was lacking clams and flavour but was loaded with tons of potatoes and celery. $10.50 Beef tartar- 4/5 great flavour but small portion and the bread used wasn't that great and could have been toasted more. Sourdough bread would have been much better. $22 Lobster roll- 3.5-5 fresh lobster seasoned well but could of came with more lobster meat. $22 I initially wanted to order cracked whole lobster or crab but was told they did not have either left which was a big disappointment. I expect a seafood restaurant to have their main menu items available at 7pm on a Friday night. I absolutely love this restaurant! It smells like seafood as soon as you walk in. The decorations also ad to the theme of the restaurant. As well, when you had an owner who goes out of his way to make sure you are enjoying yourself and having fun it makes your experience that much better! Did I miss the memo on a great seafood deal? Cause this place wasn't it. Came for lunch today and the three of us ordered the Captains platter, they doubled it up cause its usually for 2. It looked spectacular and the seafood was good, most of it served chilled except our lobster. It's not anything I'd write home about as I've had better and with a better price tag. $160 don't get you much here and we walked away feeling like we only had appetizers. I'd go elsewhere next time for seafood and know I will walk away fully satisfied. Sorry but we won't be coming back here unfortunately. We went here for dinner because it was my birthday. We were seated at a picnic style table near the back. The atmosphere was upbeat and everyone around us seemed to be having a great time. Our server was friendly and helpful. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and calamari to start. Both were good. I was a bit disappointed in the calamari - I felt it was nothing special. For our entrees we ordered the crab cakes and the shrimp and scallop linguine. The crab cakes were delicious. The pasta dish was fairly plain and lacked in flavour. Again, nothing special. I'm not an oyster lover but I chose this restaurant because I love seafood. This was the highest rated seafood restaurant in Calgary, but I'm not sure I entirely agree with that. I gave one star before bcz the food was horrendous & now I give 2 stars bcz the mussels were delicious. The lobster is $37/lb & I was extremely disappointed at how chewy it was. Recently I ventured out to Rodney's Oyster House for lunch. A newer restaurant in Calgary that is all seafood all the time. I was not disappointed. Living here you just get used to paying more for seafood and the prices are on par with other restaurants offering seafood. And you also expect the seafood to be good. As soon as you walk in it's light, airy, spacious and welcoming. I loved the decor with the whimsical furniture and oyster bar in the middle of the restaurant - it's all very nautical and the perfect atmosphere. We were greeted right away and seated. Very friendly staff and attentive. We tried some of the oysters to start after recommendations by the server. I found the condiment rack they brought out very cool (just a minor distraction) and quite enjoyed the pepper flavoured vodka as a topper for my oysters. I made sure to sample all the condiments and they were all tasty. The oysters were delicious. For lunch I had the tuna tacos. After assembling I topped mine with a little squeeze of the charred lime on the plate - it added the perfect finish. Fresh & simply delicious. What a great experience for my first visit to Rodney's. I do have to say the pictures in the bathrooms kind of took me by surprise and didn't seem to flow with the nautical theme lol, but in the end no bigs. Will be back and hopefully soon. read more

First the good: the food. I had the lobster roll, which was buttery and delicious. The oyster selection was broad and tasty as well. The crab, also very good. The lone dish that was underwhelming were the scallops, which seemed to be more of an appetizer than a main - and was very salty. Now the not so good - The overall vibe of the dining room seemed to be several steps below the price point. I found it way too casual for a $20+/plate spot. Staff looked to be dressed in their street clothes, and were indistinguishable from the guests (outside of the downtown sport coat crowd). Be sure to check out the eye opening (though unappetizing) artwork in the men's room. Service was also quite poor. I can give it a pass since its the first month of operations and they're still figuring it out. But we had our server confirm what we had ordered a half hour after we had ordered it and had extraneous dishes arrive at our table sometime after that. My wife's dinner arrived after the rest of us had finished our mains, with minimal apologies. So in the end in sad to say it's a bit of a mixed review. So excited to have a Rodney's in Calgary! I've been to the one in Vancouver a few times so I was excited to try it! Had a dozen oysters to start (a must!) we just let them pick for us cause we're no oyster experts. We had ones from Nova Scotia, PEI and BC, all nice and fresh. We had the Clam Chowder which is amazingly delicious! Definitely the best I've had in Calgary! The last thing we had was disappointing. We had the Seafood Hotpot which was on special. It tasted fine but for the price it was tiny! 2 shrimp, 2 clams, 2 muscles, 2 small pieces of fish with a few boiled potatoes for $26! Seemed like a rip off when we've had steamers there that came with over a dozen for only $15.. Definitely won't order that again!! Other than that everything tasted great!
