I have a Joey in houston (Joey Uptown) and it is an upscale spot with a lovely atmosphere. I was expecting the same at this Joey but the ambiance was much more of a mountaineer's chilis. They had the complimentary bubbles sitting in the bucket on arrive but we were not offered any. We were seated in the bar area. The tables need to be replaced. The service was ok as was the food. We partook in the late night happy hour menu. I asked what protein was in the hand tool and was told it was raw salmon but was really tempura shrimp. It was ok. The best item was the guac. Open ceiling both industrially masculine and feminine with massive yet delicate chandeliers. On the menu I fixated was steak & sushi for $38CAD, and that did not disappoint. Both salmon seared jalapeño sushi and 6 oz of CAB steak were tasty, ate every bit of them! The sushi rice was sticky like a real sushi rice, which I liked a lot! I was also very happy with my steak for it was loaded with taste and peppery! Service was professional and friendly! Staff from reception to servers were all friendly! What can I say, I love JOEYs! I've been to several locations so far and I love them all. This one in particular has such a nice layout and the coziest bar area. They have little booths that feel private but are still open. Our server was so nice and definitely took care of us. You just can't beat the happy hour menu!!!! We had such a good experience here that we ate here twice on our little trip to Calgary! The food is absolutely fantastic, the vibes are chic and cozy, staff are friendly, and prices are decent, especially during happy hour. The first visit, we just had dessert but it was so good we ate an early dinner there the next day during their happy hour. Happy hour runs from 2-5pm daily and the menu has a surprising variety of items with awesome prices. My hubby got the sushi cone appetizer that was tiny and just meh - truly the only thing we didn't care for much. He also got the California Chicken Club - a large sandwich, cooked lovely and nice bacon on top and a generous portion of fries - he loved it. I'd heard a lot of fan fare about Alberta beef so I just had to try it - I got the Steak Frites and chose the 6oz Alberta beef sirloin and it was phenomenal!! I got it medium and they cooked it perfectly. That Alberta beef deserves every bit of praise it gets! For our dessert visit, we got the Molten Chocolate Cake and the Italian Donuts and both were so delicious. The chocolate cake is a lava cake and it's extremely rich but so good. The donuts were our fave - light and fluffy and the cream inside was fantastic. The vibe here is very hip and chic and so nicely decorated- it's upscale but also very cozy. We definitely felt a little underdressed but everyone was so nice so I don't think it mattered. The staff were wonderful - friendly, attentive and even spent some time chatting with us. It's located in the lovely Eau Claire area in downtown Calgary - very walkable and right across the street from the Sheraton hotel. After arriving late into Calgary ( thanks Westjet ) to meet the lovely K for the weekend, we got to our hotel later than anticipated. We picked Joey's for the proximity, and we have enjoyed their food at home in the past. We didn't have a great start with the hostess seating us at a dirty table when there were plenty that were not. Our server was clearly annoyed when we asked her to clean the table, and didn't see to mind letting us know. From there she warmed up, as did we, and were all pals by the end of our dinner. The place is typical Joey's inside, and has a great patio outside, but it was dark so we chose the inside. The food is almost always good, if a little bit staid for our liking, but you typically know what you are going to get. K had the butter chicken which was great, but the naan and papadum were excellent. The only let down was the rice, which was barely warm. My blackened chicken was good, and thankfully our server was kind enough to allow me to change both sides as I am not a fan of warm potato salad or coleslaw. My substitutions of potato egg rolls was great, if a bit unusual, and my asparagus steamed well, but not cut short enough so the ends were chewy. All in all, a good meal, if a little short on the details which really is how the five starts are attained. read more

Honestly so disappointed with JOEY lately. First you got rid of the tandoori chicken flatbread (still grieving), and now the chili chicken too? Those were core menu items... the kind of dishes people came back for. Watching favourites disappear one by one just makes it feel like the menu is slowly losing its identity, and not in a good "refresh" kind of way. My boyfriend and I spent a few days in the Eau Claire area of downtown Calgary between travels. The first night, we went for a happy hour late-night dinner at Joey Eau Claire. It was fantastic! The location itself is gorgeous, featuring a rustic bar with booths and bar seating. We sat at a booth and ordered gyozas to start, which were delicious. I had the Szechuan lettuce wraps for my main, and they were incredible--amazing flavor and crunch but still a super light, refreshing meal. My boyfriend had the happy hour steak and fries, and it was some of the best steak I've had in a while! We were also very impressed with the drink prices. We were staying at a nearby hotel. We walked over for the happy hour menu and a late dinner. Their happy hour menu had a lot of options to choose from. We decided to order the hummus, chili chicken, sliders and steak frites. Food arrived after a short wait. I was impressed at the portion size of the hummus. It was good for sharing with a larger group. There were both hummus and tzatziki for dipping. Hummus was creamy and tzatziki was refreshing. Pita was toasted and crispy. The chili chicken was mildly spicy and sweet with crispy wonton wrappers and refreshing cucumber pieces. The sliders were mini cheeseburgers with a slice of pickle, onion slivers and processed cheese. The steak frites was a cheaper cut of beef and it was alright for the price. We finished off the meal with an individually portioned baked apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The portion size was good for sharing between two people. Service was great. This JOEY location is AMAZING!! The interior is industrial, dark, and gorgeous and we got such a warm greeting upon arrival. Our server tonight was Ayla, she mentioned she was a newer worker but she was so knowledgeable and incredible. She recommended me the Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita, and it was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy, I loved it! I called in earlier to make a reservation and it was so quick and easy, and they even asked me where in the restaurant I wanted to sit so I requested the Lounge and my request was fulfilled. Restaurant located near the waterfront in downtown Calgary. After hiking all day in Banff we got back to our hotel pretty late. I used Yelp to find some restaurants open late in walking distance and JOEY Eau Claire came up. I used the Yelp directions to try to find it and it was a little off. The restaurant is not inside the mall, it is next to it. Since the summer night was breezy and in the 70s we chose to sit on the beautiful patio. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Where in Calgary, Alberta can you go for Bombay butter chicken, panang prawn bowl, ravioli with lobster / grilled prawns, bbq salmon rice bowl, Spanish paella, baby back ribs, and filet mignon? Last night in Canada on our 9 day Canadian Rockies trip. We walk into Joey Eau Claire, brick building, with large windows, and outdoor patio on this hot summer night in early September. TV screens above a huge bar area, with waitresses in short one piece black skirt outfits. We get an indoors table, take a look at the early bird specials, including $4 Hawaiian tuna taco, sushi cone, and sliders royale, good 3-6pm everyday, or after 9pm Sunday-Thursday. 6:30pm, we are out of luck. Our waitress wears the shortest skirt of all the ladies, and gives us the menus. Wife orders the $24.25 CAD ravioli with lobster and grilled prawns, while I get the $19.25 CAD Bombay butter chicken. Service is leisurely. We are one of the few who do not order any drinks or beer. I do some people looking, and check out a guy in shorts and white slide sandals, and a lady in a skin clinging pair of jeans, displaying her good proportions. If you got it flaunt it! The Bombay butter chicken is as good as those in Silicon Valley, home to thousands of Indian engineers. Boneless chicken with just the amount of spice in a bowl of thick gravy, accompanied by rice with peas, and home made hot out of the oven naan. The ravioli with lobster comes with three prawns, in a thick butter sauce. Lobster clearly can be seen when cutting open one of the ravioli. Both of us finish our meals in very quick time, and still hungry, order the $9.25 CAD apple crisp a la mode, with maple ice cream. Average service, noisy atmosphere, excellent food, small portions. Only time I had a chance to eat Indian food on our 9 day trip. I give the waitress an extra dollar or two for showing me her revealing short skirt outfit! read more

So I usually get the ahi tuna club but this time under friend's influence I got the The Butcher's Sandwich. Vancouver doesn't have The Butcher's Sandwich on the menu. But the Calgary location doesn't have the ahi tuna taco. Oh well. The Butcher's Sandwich has lots of Roast Beef. They were very generous on the meet. Nice. This is probably the first chain restaurant that I am writing a review for so that already says a lot. We got hummus, lettuce wraps, rosemary garlic fries and spaghetti pomodoro. Everything was delicious and very good price during happy hour which the second round starts after 9pm I believe. This makes it the perfect spot for late night bites. The whipped ricotta on spaghetti was a nice touch and the favorite dish for me. The aioli in rosemary garlic fries was absolutely amazing too. Lettuce wraps were really good but I wish they weren't as oily. The service was really good. The music was good, and it was very bar vibe plus good food. Staying at the Sheraton Eau Claire, we wanted to eat somewhere nearby and ended up choosing this place as we had our 3 year old with us and the menu selection is extensive. Busy inside and outside on the patio as the weather was gorgeous outside. We were seated inside as the wait for the patio was 40 minutes. Service was pleasant, our server was run off his feet as the tables filled non-stop. They have an off-menu "kid's menu" when we inquired and happily ordered the cheese flatbread for our little guy. But at $11.25 (we didn't know until the bill came), the price seemed pretty steep, especially when it didn't come with any sides. We also ordered a juice which was $4 i believe, so yeah, it can get expensive if you're bringing more than one child with you. I ordered the Market Fresh Salad with grilled chicken upon the server's recomendation. It was nice and fresh. Came with a few pieces of cut-up grapes which I don't remember in the description. Hubs ordered the seared pressed salmon sushi rolls which were nice. I couldn't resist introducing my husband to the Loaded Crispy Mashed Potatoes that are usually offered as a side to their Steaks, so I ordered a side order as well. It was $6 for 2 which was steep. Our server warned us though that the price went up. We both enjoyed the few bites each but would hesitate to spend this much again on two pieces. For dessert we shared the individual apple pie but I asked for vanilla ice cream on the side. You can't go wrong with this dessert. There's a reason it's been on the menu since day 1. Because it was my 1st time here, I received a complimentary appetizer- Ahi tuna tacos..... Now, I think my bro-in-law makes kick ass fish tacos with his asian inspired slaw that it gives the california baja fish taco a run for it's money, but these mini Ahi fish tacos were the bomb and ranks right up next to my bro-in-law's tacos. While the food and atmosphere at Joey is always great, this review is about the service at the Eau Claire location. A little back story: my family was having a very bad terrible day (missed flight, lost passport, VERY cranky toddler) and we were staying last minute at the hotel across the road. Relieved to see a restaurant right across the way, we packed up and headed over... well, our toddler had other ideas after being stuck in a car and passport office for most of the day. She was being wild and, as much as we tried to get her to sit at the table, she wouldn't. Through it all, all the staff we encountered were so genuinely nice about the whole situation - grabbing a high chair quickly, and allowing us to let her roam on the patio where no one was seated due to the weather - and never made us feel rushed or as if they were annoyed. In the end, we decided to spare the other restaurant patrons a tired 2 year old and placed a take out order. Again, staff were lovely and accommodating. The order was prepared quickly (big thanks!) and when I came back to get it, they had included a lovely gift because they could tell we were having a sh*t day. This is a long review, but that gesture was so telling of the way this restaurant feels about their customers, and the lengths they will go to ensure they have a great experience. Food was great too!
