This is a popular chain restaurant that I have been meaning to try. This is an IHOP on steroids with elevated dishes and drinks. I visited Silver Diner in Glenarden for lunch this past Sunday with a friend. While I would return, the experience highlighted some service fundamentals that I hope management will consider addressing through additional training. We waited approximately 20 minutes to be seated, which was understandable during a busy lunch period. However, once seated, we waited another 15 minutes or so without being greeted or offered water. Having worked in food service myself, I believe one of the simplest ways to acknowledge guests is to touch the table quickly, even if the server is busy. A greeting and water communicate, "We see you, and we'll be with you shortly." This is especially important during the summer when guests may have already been waiting outside or in a crowded lobby. When we eventually asked for water, the response was essentially, "Oh, you wanted water?" That surprised me. Water should not feel like a special request at a full-service restaurant. Because of the delay, we placed most of our order at once. Unfortunately, nearly everything then arrived at once too: water, appetizers, cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, and other items. I had intentionally ordered two different drinks expecting to enjoy them at different points during the meal, but instead found myself with three beverages and food all competing for attention at the same time. Nothing about the server was rude. In fact, she was very sweet and pleasant, which is important to acknowledge. My concern is more about training, pacing, and attentiveness. A restaurant meal should feel like an experience, not simply an order being delivered to the table all at once. I was also surprised to see the suggested gratuity begin at 20%. I have no issue tipping well for good service, but when a restaurant prominently suggests that level of gratuity, I believe the service standards should consistently reflect it. Guests should feel cared for rather than feeling that a tip is expected regardless of the experience provided. Ultimately, I packed much of my meal and left sooner than anticipated. The food and overall concept are enough that I would absolutely give this location another opportunity, but the hospitality needs refinement. This review isn't intended to criticize one individual server. I hope management sees it as constructive feedback and an opportunity to reinforce some of the fundamentals: acknowledge the table, offer water promptly, communicate when there is a delay, and properly pace food and beverages. I think that I will fault myself for the experience because I have never tried Silver Diner ever, and I went there at about 10:45pm on a Saturday. It really wasn't crowded at all about 5-6 tables tops that had been served or was just being served tops. We were seated quickly our server took a good minute to get there we got water and a sprite with lemons! When the server returned with our water and sprite, she asked us if we needed more time with the menu, we responded that we didn't need more time we were ready to order. And we did! I ordered the buffalo wings for an App, and Chicken Piccata with vegetables and the starch was a barley mixed with chopped zucchini for my entree. My son ordered grilled salmon with mixed vegetables. The server later came back and said they ran out of salmon. So my son ordered a Philly cheesesteak, mind you we are from Philly, so we already knew this would be interesting at best just to see what they came up with! So they bring out the food quite quickly I might add which should have been a red flag for me that at least my order would be jacked, and it really was! The chicken piccata really looked like some un-breaded chicken tenders with a snot sauce which I guess was lemon juice with too much starch that got over cook and under hydrated. My son's Philly cheesesteak was laughable, and super huge soft roll with probably no more than 3-4 ounces of shaven steak, I hope it was steak because he ate all of it because he was hungry. The fries appeared to look and taster better, but I didn't take a picture of that because I was still trying to get over my dish. Our server never came back , almost like she was guilty of serving us and having to go to the kitchen and cook the food too. She never returned I had to get up and asked the host for our bill. The bill was $63 and change for that crap and a server that never came back to give us the bill. They come with the pay machine and on it had the tip amounts to check, it also had "no tip" suggested too, and I was surely tempted to use the "no tip" but what little we saw of the server she was nice, I guess! Anyway $75 for the worst restaurant experience ever! I don't think I will ever go back to any Silver Diner ever again or at least maybe never that late at night, because the food appeared to be prepared for late night partiers the probably wouldn't GAF. Silver Diner is located in a convenient shopping area with plenty of parking, which already makes it an easy and stress-free spot to visit. From the outside, it has that classic, full-fledged American diner look and once you walk in, it absolutely delivers on that vibe. The place is clean, welcoming, and has a really nice atmosphere. As soon as we entered, the greeter was friendly and quickly got us seated in a booth. The staff overall was very welcoming and attentive throughout our visit, which made the experience even better. The menu has a ton of options, so there's something for everyone. For our meal, we ordered the French toast and the shrimp and grits, and for an appetizer, we tried the spinach rolls which were honestly fantastic and a standout item. Everything we had was flavorful and satisfying. There was a small mix-up with my drink, I ordered orange juice but received apple juice instead but it wasn't a big deal, and everything else came out great. The diner also offers a variety of beverages, including alcoholic options, coffee, hot chocolate, and more, though we stuck with breakfast drinks this time. Pricing can be a bit on the higher side depending on what you order. For two people, our breakfast came out to around $68, but considering the quality of the food, service, and overall experience, it felt worth it. Ordered the crabcake with fries both arrived burnt after waiting 11 1/2 minutes for someone to take our order I sent them back and they came back. A little better service was slow, although the restaurant was not crowded at all very disappointed in the taste of the crabcake. I've maybe had corned beef hash once in my life and it's not something I'd usually order but I was in a weird mood where my usual go-tos (shrimp & grits or an omelet) just weren't doing it for me ‍. Everything tasted hearty, comforting, and like something your country relative would make at home, in the best way possible. Given it was Christmas Eve, the place was pretty packed, but we were seated right away (we arrived around 10:15am). The restaurant itself is quite large and also has a bar area with self-seating. Our server, a young guy who was likely a teenager was friendly and attentive, though a bit forgetful. I didn't hold that against him since it looked like he was covering quite a few tables and doing his best. Overall, the food and service were solid, but I do have one request: better hot sauce options . Tabasco is simply not real hot sauce. Crystal or Louisiana would be much more appropriate especially in the Black community . I haven't been to an old school diner like this in ages. The nostalgic feel of the red chairs, the floor tiles, having a booth. Where many places today run to what's trendy, these were mostly classic dishes made with organic, clean ingredients. I liked this so much, I went for breakfast, had my mind blown and ran back for dinner the next day that I could. If I had to choose between them, I say go twice. Starting with breakfast, not enough menus today have a classic lumberjack breakfast. I asked for the local sausage and this was easily one of my favorite parts. The shrimp and grits took the spotlight. The grits you could eat with a fork (but were not dry!) The sausage was juicy and spicy, and I didnt feel like I had to look for shrimp. I would not suggest the eggrolls. New sauce. New flavor combo. Something else has to happen. The wings are legit. I didnt share any additional preference and the wings came saucy yet still crispy. Lanham, MD isn't exactly a destination dining city, so stumbling onto Silver Diner and going back a second time tells you something. We hit it twice during a recent trip: once for breakfast, and once for dinner. Both times, the menu range stopped us in our tracks. This isn't a laminated-two-pager situation. There's real variety here, and it's executed with a level of care that genuinely surprised me. Portion sizes are exactly where they should be (not the grotesque American overload, not the pretentious undersell) and the flavors are consistently on point. The one exception: my other half felt her breakfast potatoes were a little flat, with bland seasoning and a texture that wasn't quite there. A minor thing, but worth noting because everything else around it cleared a higher bar. For breakfast, the coffee was ok, though I suspect ours had been sitting too long. Not a dealbreaker, but a place this dialed-in should probably be more attentive to that detail. Value is where Silver Diner arguably embarrasses its competition. The price-to-quality ratio is legitimately hard to explain. Where else do you get this kind of menu variety, this level of execution, and walk out without wincing at the bill? Whoever runs this chain is paying attention to the details and clearly cares about making an impression, and it shows in almost every aspect of the operation, including a noticeably clean dining room. That said, the staff was somewhat of a letdown. They're efficient, sure, but warm they are not. The payment handoff in particular felt oddly transactional...they simply extended the payment device across the table. It's a small thing that lands wrong when the rest of the experience is so clearly intentional. I find it hard to square how much attention goes into the food and environment, and how little seems to go into making guests feel like the staff actually wants to be there. All in all, if Silver Diner ever opens in the Pacific Northwest, I'll be in line before the doors open, and I suspect half of the Seattle area would join me. Go. We haven't been to this location in the evening so we decided to go on a Wednesday evening it was not busy The staff was really nice the restaurant look clean buut it was not bus. Food on the other hand was not tasteful and looks slopped together. As we were there we noticed somebody complaining about seasoning not being on their salmon. Had one order of chicken fried steak with gravy the gravy look like something out of a old elementary school cafeteria and did not move. The new potatoes had saute caramelized onions on them and did not look appealing. The cheeseburger had more cheese on it then bun or burger. Two of us went for breakfast and sat at the bar...horrible. Server stood around doing nothing a lot. My partner's food was cold and eggs cooked wrong. My waffle was cooked incorrectly - sent back for what the server called "a rush on your waffle". Well after 10 minutes, we asked about it. "It'll be out in less than 2 minutes", says the server. You guessed it...no waffle...until a total of TWENTY minutes for that rushed waffle. This is after it took forever to get the initial one. The pancakes were fluffy, eggs were cooked perfectly, and the turkey sausage was seasoned just right. One downside: the bacon. If you're like me and prefer it crispy, definitely let your server know. So let's just say SD hadn't fallen off my radar but it's been a minute. Yesterday, I visited the Woodmore location. When I arrived who do I see but Joseph, one of the managers. Joseph, who remembered me immediately welcomed me and asked where I'd been. I explained work and travel but told him that after a somewhat challenging day I wanted/needed a good meal. Let me just say I was not disappointed. The new seasonal menu is AWESOME. I chose the Rosemary Lamb chops (Blackened and grilled to a Medium temperature) and made a few changes to my vegetables. It was Soooooo good and I topped it off with their new key lime pie dessert. Yes, everything was good but the service provided by Joseph and my server absolutely OUTSTANDING. Since many reviews mentioned that breakfast was their strong suit, we gave it another shot the next morning. In short, this diner shows promise but is currently just average when it comes to food quality. Both our lunch and breakfast meals were... bland. A little more seasoning and flavor could go a long way and easily boost their rating from a 3.5 to a solid 4 or even 4.5. The service was good and the restaurant was clean, although the server seemed unfamiliar with the menu. My entree was terrible. I ordered the fish and chips. It was overly breaded and tasteless at the same time. The fish without the breading was dry and clearly not fresh, as if it was pre-frozen. The coleslaw looked great but was also tasteless. I ate the fries which contained no old bay, as described on the menu. The happy hour margarita was terrible, made with an oddly tasting premix I presume. I didn't drink it. We went on a sleepy Thursday morning and it wasn't very busy, but the staff was more than friendly, the food was fresh, and the service was quick. Silver Diner is always a good choice for quick and good food. I usually dine at the one in Greenbelt but met a friend here one afternoon. We both wanted breakfast food and ordered waffles, eggs, and bacon. It was yummy but took forever to come out. I normally don't have a problem here when I sit at the bar.Came in to a empty bar ordered my food it took a while then it set on the counter with everybody working around it but nobody would bring it I got their attention but they just looked at me like I was speaking Greek. 4 people at the bar now all eating still don't have food,ask fo the Manager no one came. Someone finally picked up my plate and brought them to us of course the food was cold sent it back. Took a while again to recook it but they returned with an incomplete plate, said I had to wait on my bread, again everyone that came after me eating and enjoying their food at the bar. With that said I left I went over to the manager and explain to her what happened and why I was leaving she just look confused and in respond, I told her I have a nice day and I left. I really hope this place can do better with their service they got enough people working there but it doesn't seem like half of them know what they're doing or busy socializing with each other.
