These were the first Portuguese egg tarts I ever had and I thought they were just ok. Better than Chinese egg tarts, but I wanted the texture to softer or creamy, not stiff. The tarts aren't out in a display case, but someone will come out from the back and you can request the kind of tarts you want and how many. The Almond Puff Pastry & Cream, and the Passionfruit Pie were both pretty good though. Got in early to get some custard tarts. Smells nice inside as expected of a bakery. Bought some almond cookies on a whim.. Tarts are custardy but we're not warm. Very rich in flavor though. The almond cookies have a more subtle flavor. Should go great with coffee. Going to grab some from Jack in the box next door. Update Jack in the box coffee sucks. Silva Bakery is a nice place to get your Portuguese sweet bread, Peri Peri sauce, tarts and almond custard pastry. This place is not easy to find and they are in a non de-script strip mall in north Hayward. They do have other Portuguese groceries like cheese and sausages. It's run by a friendly staff who was ready to explain about the products they had. I will go back to try other bakery product they had on their shelf. read more

This padaria is very fixe! I love it. It's very hidden but i was happy to find a location where my roots are from. I love the Pastéis de nata very much I have also tried them at the Luso Mercado near by but this bakery really reminds me of my cultural roots of my ancestors AND they even speak Portuguese :) that was a plus for me. Last week, my wife showed me a picture of the Portuguese Custard Tarts and said, "I want to try". So, while I was out and about, I made the drive over and found their shop. If you're looking for it, it's on the little street behind the Jack in the Box. The storefront doesn't look like much as the windows were all covered over. The store itself is tiny. I was dismayed to find the main display case nearly empty at 4:00 in the afternoon. The young lady behind the counter informed me that they had been closed for five days over New Years and today was the first day back so inventory was very low. She had exactly four Custard Tarts and four Coconut Tarts left in stock which she quickly packed up for me. They were quite yummy! And yes, the wife was quite pleased! I love this place! They start baking at midnight and open at 7am, so if you want fresh bread and tarts get there early! The little custard tarts are the best ones I've ever tried, they are not cheap but are delicious! They sell Goularts linguica,(smoked, hot, chunky, home style and organic ) Also the Goularts blood sausage is very good too! Lots of different imported Portuguese cheeses and canned goods too. I tried the custard egg tart and tasted really delicious creamy and sweet, and the apple turnover was very good too. I ordered one custard egg tart for $1.50 and a Apple turnover for $0.75. I guess I had imagined that these custard tarts would be maybe a little bit bigger. Or maybe I'm just use to paying that price for something that's a little bit bigger than that, but I guess custard Tart would be costing more. The apple tart or turnover was also smaller than what I'm used to for that price. But I can tell that they were handmade at least the turnover seem to be, so the price made sense. This place had only one table and two chairs, so if you wanted to sit, it's limited. They have a deal if you buy in bulk for the custard egg tarts. Not easy to find: I put the location into the GPS mapped it and it directed me to here, but then when it said to turn it didn't look too obvious whether to turn into there. There was a gated place right next to it, and then my GPS said I am currently past it. So I pulled over into a residential area, housing try track and I parked in there. Park in front: The businesses around this place are kind of run down and I wasn't too sure as to how safe it was there me being there by myself. I ran over to their because I'm used to running, but also because it seems like a run-down area and they were a few somewhat gangsterish looking people that were walking around there. Nobody bothered me or anything but you should probably park in the parking lot directly in front of this place. Clean hygienic food practices: When I had to use the bathroom it was located in the back of this bakery, so I had to walk through the back of the bakery where they had their baking trays out and the floor in there was very clean as well as things around there in the back. It gives clues to how clean the food preparation practices are. It gives me peace when I know that anything that I eat or drink was made carefully in a clean environment. read more

They make really good pasteis de natas (portuguese custard tarts). Unlike the ones I am used to from dim sum, the filling is more of a pudding consistency. They sell other baked goods (mostly bread and cookies) and other portuguese products. They have different types of Sumol (a popular Portuguese soft drink) - carbonated, non carbonated, in cans, in bottles, in 1.5 liters! I felt like I was in a market in Portugal. They actually sold out of pasteis de natas when I went on a Friday, but the guy behind the counter said I could purchase them frozen and bake them at 350 degrees for 5 minutes at home. I thought 5 minutes was too short, but the guy insisted that 5 minutes was enough! I did just that, but they were still frozen in the middle after 5 minutes. The total came out to $8.70- quite a steal! The egg custards were much sweeter than I would have liked, but I enjoyed the pudding consistency. As a current San Diego resident, there is NO place in SD that offers these delectable Portuguese tartlets called "pasteis de nata". Having heard about how delicious they were I would have to encounter these during my travels. En route to another lab tour (actually, more of a detour) I stopped by Silva's Bakery. This bakery is a very small complex with 2-3 other businesses right off the 238 as you exit Mission Blvd and can be easily missable. However, as I'm slowly finding out on my Bay Area foodie adventures, a lot of the notable places are tucked away. The bakery is divided into two sections: the bakery where they sell other Portuguese baked goods and a small market that sells Portuguese specialty items. Although the website mentions that they sell pasteis de nata and other Yelpers have bought them, I don't think you can buy that many at once as they are not advertised on the store. The only indicator that they sell these tarts is that near the cashier there's 3 tarts covered by a glass dome. To not waste a trip to Hayward if you're not near the area it's best that you call them when they open and request them over the phone. The bakery takes orders individually (a little more than a dollar) or by the dozen (a little more than $12). I ordered a half dozen and when I arrived it took the lady a little while to produce the small box that contained these treats. The tarts were quite delicious right off the box, though to truly enjoy them, I recommend reheat them in a convection oven for about 5-10 minutes (as suggested by the No1DP, thanks dear). The tarts have a flaky crust as they are made by puff pastry, but they are cleaner to eat than a dan tat from Golden Gate Bakery. The custard also keeps its shape more and has a more pudding-like texture than a dan tat (more yolky), but the taste is much more enhanced by reheating. They serve these fresh every Saturday, so if you can, get these tarts fresh! Not surprisingly I was quite impressed with Silva's pasteis de nata and if I can't make the journey to Hayward should I live in the Bay Area next year I'll try to find other stores that sell them. read more

I've had various pastries from here before, but never actually had the opportunity of coming in. Until today... I was already on my way over here and realized I would not make it for the 3pm Saturday closing. The guy asked how long it would take me to get there, and gladly offered to wait!!! They are closed on Sundays, and coming on a weekday is out of the question for me living in SF. The fact that he offered and even insisted on waiting for me says wonders about how much they care about their customers. Beyond that, he even showed me around and pointed out the most popular items. But enough about that. On to the food: As almost every other review has mentioned, the pasteis de nata are the big attraction here, and it is very well deserved!! Comparing these to egg tarts from Chinatown (or anywhere else for that matter) is a disservice. These knock all other egg/custard tarts out of the park! Flaky, not too egg-y or dough-y, and just the right amount of sweet AND pretty cheap! Beyond the pasteis, they have a wide variety of breads, biscoitos, cheeses, etc. I was even further impressed that they carried some brazilian products as well! I left here with a half dozen pasteis (should have gotten a full dozen. the half was gone within an hour) Papo Seco - sort of like a french roll almost. Perfect for breakfast and really fresh. Guarana antartica (brazilian soda) and brazilian chocolates. I didn't want to abuse the fact that I was already there after hours, so I picked a couple of things and left. I definitely plan on coming back to get some of their other items like the sweet bread. The point is - despite being extremely out of the way for me, it is still absolutely worth it. The lady in the store was telling me she had come all the way from Pleasanton for the pasteis. If you've had them before, these will be the best you've had. When I found out that Hong Kong Egg Tarts originated from the Portuguese Pasteis de nata, I immediately went on Yelp to find a bakery that would sell this because I wanted to try the real thing. I felt so lucky to have been able to find a Portuguese bakery near my house! It's very rare to have one located so conveniently! There is plenty of parking in the lot in front. The place is filled with Portuguese goodies, from meat to bread to pastries. The first time I went, the owner was working in the front. He is very friendly and great to chat with. I ordered a couple of pasteis de nata (egg tartlets), queijadas de feijao e amendoa (bean/almond tartlets), queijadas de coco (coconut tartlets), and palmiers. The palmiers were decent with nice, flaky and sweet crusts. However, the tartlets were definitely the best. The pasteis de nata was my favorite. Compared to the Hong Kong egg tarts, the crust is a more light and soft puff pastry, which I very much prefer more over than the dry, flaky hong kong egg tart crust. The egg custard has a hint of lemon flavor as compared to the hong kong-style's. The caramelized top also adds a distinct sweetness to the taste. If you had the HK-style egg tarts, you definitely need to try this! And Silva Bakery makes it very well. I always come back here when I've back in town from San Diego. The tartlets are $1 each and the palmiers are 2 for $1 which is reasonably priced for such great desserts. The Pasteis de nata would usually be all gone by 10am! But do not fear, you can call a day in advance to place an order and they will make an order just for you! Keep in mind that this place is closed Sundays and Mondays! So plan ahead! This a review for their sweet bread. My partner and I are very picky about Portuguese sweet bread, as we are from Hawaii and used to the sweet bread there. I am not as picky as my partner, so with his nod of approval, I knew this bakery made the cut. Usually we like our bread to be more buttery, sweet, and savory. This bread was a bit dry, yet sweet...with a hint a cinnamon. I really liked the bread. But the with my partners nod, i knew it was a repeat purchase. Thank you Silva Bakery. Wowza! This place is the BOMB. This is a tiny little unassuming grocery/bakery in a run down strip mall but their products are out of this world. The person at the front was super nice and friendly. He walked me through the items that they have and guided me to the almond tart and the pasties de natas. The natas were incredible!! I have had these in a couple of Portuguese bakeries in the LA area but they did not even come close. The almond tart was delicious as well. Apparently they sell 2000 natas a week and I am not surprised at all. I think I could eat 100 a week myself. On top of this both items were only a buck each. Mr Silva is a gifted baker. read more
