Picked up a birthday cake for my boss that a client ordered for him. It was a ginormous lemon cake that took us over a week to finish! Denise was very sweet! I called her ahead of time to make sure that the cake was ready to pick up, and since I was driving through traffic, unsure if I could make it before closing time, she totally understood. Once I picked up the cake, she instructed to me to let the cake thaw for at least 1 hour after taking it out of the fridge so that it will be soft and not crumbly. Got the death by chocolate and 24 carrot cake slices delivered the other day. The carrot cake was delicious - not too sweet, just as I like it. It had walnuts and pecans too if I'm not mistaken which gave a good crunch and nuttiness to the cake. The chocolate cake was a classic spongy moist cake with cream glaze which was on the sweeter side. My past few visits to downtown Hayward were on Sundays and they're closed that day (& Monday). I was stoked to stop by and try a few cupcakes. I cannot say enough great things about Max's Cakes. I stumbled upon them after reaching out to a baker who failed to respond back to my multiple attempts of outreach. I believe they were a suggestion from her Instagram page. I was discouraged after reading on their website that they require a good amount of notice - it was a Monday and her birthday was Saturday. Although it stated they require an ample amount of notice they also mentioned to still reach out to them as they may be able to accommodate. So I sent an email...and got no response. Fast forward to that Wednesday, Max himself had returned the email asking for the details and providing me with a quote for the cost. He said if I could have the payment in by that Wednesday they could confirm to make the cake. I paid immediately! That Saturday when I picked up the cake the staff was so welcoming. Make sure you come early if you're looking for a specific flavor and/or style of cake, since they were already out out some sliced cake flavors and cupcakes by 2pm on a Saturday. They still had a good variety of cupcakes available, and I got the last of their red velvet. I was gifted treats from Max's from a local and was impressed with the churro cupcake. The crumb is light and crumbly, packed with delicate cinnamon flavor. The cupcake is filled with cajeta and topped with a cream cheese frosting. I thought the frosting was too sweet paired with the cajeta and would have preferred something less sweet and less frosting on top, but otherwise was unique and delicately delicious. The slice of carrot cake was on the dryer side and had a lot of nuts. I don't mind nuts in carrot cakes but this was more than what I typically see. I would have love to seen some cajeta in the carrot cake, like a thin spread in between all the layers, and moisture in the crumb. My husband had the mini cheesecake and he loved it.
