This was my first time not only getting my hair cut by Silkcut, but in Austin. Walking in on a Sunday around 2pm, I didn't have an appointment, but I only had to wait around 10-15 minutes. Not bad at all, but I'll make an appointment next time just in case. The place is very clean and lively. A lot of families with their children there. I got my hair cut by Ty. Questions about my hair were quick and simple (how short? thinning? layering?) and he got to work. The longer he worked, the more comfortable and relaxed I felt. He definitely knows what he's doing and in the end, he got the job done. Hair looks great! You can tell by the environment that loyalty is highly valued. The difficulties of having thin-fine sucks. Likewise, finding a great hairstylist is like finding a purple squirrel. With more important and prevailing issues goin' around, I wanted to address the world of cosmetology on a light note...at least before Donald Trump denounces hair-cuts. Never thought I'd say that guy needed more volume. Todd has been my guy for almost a year. I use the same photo and the deed is quickly done. A small justice being served. If you're tired of getting your thin-fine hair butchered, and actually need it to be well kept for your job or decency...trust in Todd. Go vogue, or go rogue. My hair is magically back every 2.5-3.5 weeks (a blessing), but is a pain to fight traffic for the trip. So I normally wait it out to the point of no return. Toad is pretty accommodating when I schedule a few hours ahead and usually able to squeeze me in. Some days of the week are tight so don't wait till last minute. He's very patient and doesn't go Picasso on you. I use the same photo every time for a low-maintenance-work appropriate cut. 2-3 on sides, blend (he's good), and simple trim/texturize on top so I can still custom. He takes care of the rest to adjust for head/face shape or if I want some variation. Good, dependable, and very familiar with this type of hair/styling if you have it. Next time someone talks stuff about your hair not being important...they probably have no clue what the feather-cut is going on in your life. Hair cut: It's a typical short hair cut so there's really nothing to comment on. She takes her time and makes sure everything is even. She also fluffs most of the excess hair off before oh leave so you don't come home with like hundreds of loss hair strands. Environment: I do like that it's in the Asian shopping center near MT market. They keep their stations clean and brush off the hair. They provide complimentary coffee and restrooms. When you walk in, I believe the owner is the one that greets you and ask typical questions. It is in an Asian shopping center so diversity is low. I don't look Vietnamese so many people don't realize that I can understand them. Typically you think the stylists are talking about you, but they're not. They're really friendly and always joking about each other so if you're concerned about that, don't be! I'm SO glad that this was better than my last visit to get a hair cut in Chinatown... At my roommate's recommendation, I tried Silkcut because I needed a cut pretty badly. I was nervous going at the end of the day, worried that they would all be tired and would then half-ass cutting my hair, and they proved me terribly wrong. After waiting for about 10 minutes, Johnny asked me to sit in his chair. He asked me what I wanted, and then got right to work. This guy knew exactly what to do and how to do it! As an Asian male with the typical thin, straight hair, Johnny was aware of the difficulty that it poses and paid extreme care to my hair. It was almost astonishing how he would pay so much attention to just one side of my head, making sure he cut it in such a way that would look good. He also noted that when I came in, my hair looked so bad because it was so thick, and recommended thinning it so it would not only last longer, but would look better by getting some of the excess hair out. At the end of the cut, he asked what I thought, and I felt very comfortable in asking him questions on how my hair looked versus what I thought it should look like, and he was very attentive in addressing my questions and actually showing me what my hair would look like after styling it versus how it looked dry. HOLD UP. I didn't even mention what the price was! For all the help that Johnny gave me, the hair cut was ONLY $12!!! If the price doesn't sway you, I don't know what else will. I'm glad to say that I left Silkcut being very satisfied with the work Johnny did, and I'm even more glad that I listened to my roommate and took a risk that I don't particularly like taking! tl;dr: if you're an Asian male with Asian hair and are nervous about getting your hair cut in Austin, Silkcuts will take care of you and take care of you well. Finally figured out a few Silkcut mysteries today while getting a fresh combover before work starts tomorrow. The guy who cuts my hair is named Johnny, and he is damn good. Yeah, it took me a few visits to figure out his name. There was a bunch of people waiting for a haircut today, yet he still took all the time needed to be as thorough as possible. And, for the third time now, I say again that this was my best haircut yet. As far as getting your hair washed afterwards is concerned, they charge an extra $2 and you have to ask for it before the end of your haircut. I swear they used to do it for free, and that's probably where the confusion came from in my past reviews. Anyways, they finally get this fifth star. It's still $14 for a men's cut. Get your hair washed afterwards and leave a twenty if you want an equally awesome experience next time around. Haven't been disappointed yet. read more

The lady said she can take my mom right away and was seating my mom but the guy (Thuan-middle station on the right) said there was another person before her so she apologize and took the other person instead. Whatever style of hair you want done, he's able to understand how to achieve that. I've had some pretty wacky hair requests and he's always been patient with me and gives me the look I want. The person that cuts my hair is Johnnie, and I trust him to do my hair every single time. I've always recommended him to my friends and family because of his work. Men's haircut, you can expect anywhere from $12-$16 depending how complicated your hair is. The most I've ever been charged was $14, and that is definitely still cheaper than everywhere else. There are times when Johnnie has been on vacation for six weeks, and that is when I went to a different hair stylist. I paid $35 for the other stylist that is local, and in comparison to Johnnie, he cuts just as well as the one I paid $35! I don't mind traveling the other side of town to get a haircut here as well. Pro tip: Call in to make an appointment if you do not want to wait in line as long.
