I was heading home from College Station after a Master Naturalist conference. I'd skipped breakfast…read morethat morning, turning down my host's kind offer--a decision I quickly regretted. Halfway home, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, I was suddenly both hungry and queasy. I asked Siri to "find food near me," but she kept trying to send me miles off my route. Then, like a beacon, I spotted a Whataburger sign in the distance and made a beeline for it. Anyone who knows me knows I'm not big on fast food. Fortunately, Whataburger is the exception. I've always loved their food, and even after the company's sale to outsiders, I haven't noticed any change in quality. I really hope my doctor doesn't check Yelp, because the moment I walked in and saw the sign for a Dr Pepper Blackberry Shake, I knew resistance was futile. I ordered a medium--though I was absolutely eyeing the large--and it was incredible. Cold, creamy, and perfectly sweet, it hit the spot. For my meal, I went with the Avocado Bacon Burger because it just sounded right. When it arrived, it was served on thick Texas toast like a patty melt, loaded with crispy bacon and delicious grilled onions. It was gloriously messy--and I didn't care one bit. I paired it with a side of onion rings, the same classic ones I've enjoyed for years. This particular Whataburger is attached to a truck-stop-style gas station but has its own entrance and the feel of a standalone restaurant. It might be new, I'm not sure--but I can tell you the staff was friendly, and the place was spotless.

Tonight, changed all those good experiences. I ordered online and sat in the lobby waiting. 7 orders all before I ordered received their food. I was next. 15 minutes roll by and still no food. The employee that was handing out all the orders decided to start talking to the employees cooking the food. 5 more minutes later, the employee taking orders felt sorry for me and asked if I was waiting for an order. I told him I was and he went and found it sitting in the food warmer. I just wanted to say thanks Whataburger for the rubbery fries and old burger!

Reba's is easy to find and quite convenient. It's a large restaurant with a very nostalgic feel…read more The place is open and lots of seating. Music is great! We grabbed a menu and sat down. I noticed it's a bit limited on burgers and sandwiches but perhaps good for the area and easy for the staff to make. We ordered and added some pies, paid in cash for the discount and left to fill our cups. The cashier and another employee had conversations amongst themselves while we were ordering and paying. Felt a bit awkward since we didn't want to interrupt their hugging and or whatever they were doing. The sweet tea stayed mostly empty but lots of unsweetened tea. We dove right into our pies first. The Almond Joy didn't taste like the candy bar as much as an amaretto coconut pie but really good! The buttermilk pie was really good too. I ordered the chicken poblano "burger". The lettuce was sadly very soggy as was the whole sandwich. Thankfully the bun was toasted because there was way too much mayo. I noticed right away that it was just bland. The chicken was thick which is great but it was bland on bland on bland. No poblano flavor. I looked for the peppers. They were grilled/sautéed and thin. Soggy sitting under the lettuce. No flavor. The fries weren't anything special but the crunch. The tea was sadly tasteless as well. I really wish there was more to say. My mom's sandwich was just sort of...there. Nothing special to talk about. I'd go again for pie and coffee alone and only if I was desperate for something to eat. There may be better places to eat in town. It's slow paced inside. Good to watch cars go by and imagine what the place looked like years ago.

(FYI, I live in San Antonio and am very tempted to take a road trip for my next yummy slice.) Then there dessert...well, located within a rocks throw of Brenham, you know what to expect, and it ain't just yummy cookies and cake. Yes, ladies and gentlemen (drumroll) you guessed it...BLUE BELL ICE CREAM!! Spoiler alert they failed to have my favorite daiquiri ice but you're not going to lose me over that. (Hint: just saying for future options. I'll be on the lookout next time I'm rolling down 290 East.) All good and well, the girls behind the counter were attentive and nice. And the restaurant rang of a good place to go after a go hometown Buffalo's Friday night football game. (This is Texas you know.) Thanks Reba (if there is a flesh and blood Reba out there) for expanding to your latest downtown location. LOVE IT!

It's like a paste and it's like mushy like ground up onions it's almost like they made a gross onion paste and slathered it all over the burger, like they put a bunch of old onion in an emulsifier and then sprayed it all over your burger in a really thick gross layer and the tomato was like not quality and the lettuce wrap that the lettuce was like wet and the ratio of this onion paste to burger is like there's more onion than burger and I just don't think I'll be coming back because it's almost not edible I got the cookie and it's like not soft and chewy at all and I asked them about the banana bread, but I didn't order it, but they charged me and put it in my bag anyways and the french fries have not been very crispy they've been also mushy and I'm just really disappointed and I just don't really ever wanna come back. I wasted money paying extra for the not bacon that was gross and onion mush - Didn't finish it kind of want a refund NGL

There are restaurants you try once because they're trendy... and then there are places like Paw-Paw's -- the kind that become part of your family's story over time. From the fried deviled eggs, to the seafood platters, to the chicken tenders, to the genuinely wonderful staff, there just isn't a better spot for this kind of old-school comfort food experience. And the staff? Always SO friendly and welcoming. Every single time we come in, it feels less like "customer service" and more like old friends excited you finally stopped by so they can catch up with you awhile. That kind of warmth cannot be faked, and it makes such a difference. Now let's discuss these fried deviled eggs. Because respectfully... who allowed them to be this good? You think deviled eggs have reached their final form and then Paw-Paw's comes in like, "Hold my beer." Crispy, crunchy, creamy, flavorful perfection. We start most meals with them because not ordering them would simply be poor decision making at this point. I usually get the chicken tender basket and LISTEN -- these aren't sad little freezer tenders pretending to be a meal. These tenders are literally as big as my hand. Juicy, tender, flavorful, cooked perfectly every time. My adult kids are obsessed with the seafood platter: three pieces of fried catfish and three jumbo fried shrimp with fries, pinto beans, slaw, hushpuppies, and homemade tartar or cocktail sauce. And when I say the catfish tastes CLEAN, my fellow seafood people will understand exactly what I mean. No muddy taste, no weirdness -- just fresh, crispy, perfectly fried fish done right. And the portions? Paw-Paw did NOT come to play. Nobody is leaving hungry unless that was a personal choice. What I love most, though, is the feeling of the place. The small-town care. The heart that clearly goes into the food. The old-school comfort vibe that feels increasingly rare these days. Places like this matter. And Paw-Paw's is absolutely one of them.

Ordered the fried catfish platter. Plenty of food. The catfish is battered and fried to perfection. Always my go to when craving catfish.

Pulling up to Roadhouse felt like I was about to film a low-budget country music video. The aggressively unpretentious energy was immaculate. The all-dirt parking lot said everything! No curated patio, no aesthetic succulents just straight up vibes and dust. The place was packed at 1 p.m. Our server, Raven, took great care of us from the jump. Rave was very efficient, friendly, and had zero attitude. We ordered a basket of fries, a portobello mushroom burger for me, a cheeseburger, a Philly cheesesteak, upgraded side salads, and, of course, their famous carrot cake to share. Now, let me confess something: As a Californian, I walked in with absolutely zero expectations given the facade. And yet... the fries were perfect. The portobello burger was juicy, well-seasoned, and very satisfying! My friends inhaled their cheeseburger and Philly like they were participating in a competitive sport. Lol. And don't even get me started with their carrot cake. It was disrespectfully delicious! This was seriously the most humbling "don't judge a book by its cover" moment I've had in a while. Roadhouse doesn't need any curated lighting or a reclaimed-wood Instagram wall because the food and service speak for themselves. I drove into a dirt lot with skepticism and left faceplanted by my own bias. Consider me corrected, Bastrop!
