Dear Sidebar: PLEASE fix that one wobbly stair that's like 3rd or fourth from the bottom. If you like I will take photos of the bruises (and one gnarly open wound) up and down my body that resulted from my tumbling down those stairs (before I was even drunk!) and send them to you so you can see how important this is. I have now been here twice for kareoke saturday and have never regretted giving up a Saturday of clubbing to make a fool of myself. Well actually, I do regret the fact that I don't always remember the entire night there. Bonus for bartenders and bouncers being awesome and having a supply of just about every charger to help you out once your phone dies as mine happens to do every time I come here. On weekend nights, the place can get pretty crowded, but it's usually not too hard to find a table for a group of people. Yay for Cheap bars in Downtown Boston. If you come here on off hours, the staff is really friendly. They still try to be even at its busiest. One time I walked in with a friend of mine who was going there too often. The Bartender was taking a while to get to us, so she plopped down a free 3/4 full pitcher of beer for us. 6 Dollars Pitchers of Bud in Boston... that saved this place a star The food is actually good. the .10 wings aren't... but they are .10 cents, so whatever. If you eat too many, the wings alone will give you a hang over. They have wraps, burgers and some other greasy, but filling and well made entres. Been here many times over the last 10-15 years. Had a couple friends who worked in the financial district nearby for a long time and I lived a short T ride away so I used to meet them occasionally on Friday afternoons. It's a fun dive bar. As long as I've been coming here I don't think it's ever changed at all. Features standard bar food (but decent), video games, TVs, a juke box and a pretty laid back and fun clientele. 1. The female bartender there was rude enough to call me princess before I placed my order. I took it as a joke because she was friendly to my co workers (who were white coincidentally). 2. The insults continued the whole time we proceeded to spend over $120. 3. Even though we each tipped her, she refused to serve me after the coworkers left. You can take a bartender refusing to serve a black customer that tipped her however you like, but I won't be going back there. I had heard side bar preferred a certain clientele, hence the lack of cognac in the selection. Just a shame to have it happen while getting drinks with people after work. Honestly would have given this place 5 stars if it weren't for their service. My friend and I popped in yesterday for lunch...we wanted to sit at a table, but weren't sure if we were supposed to wait to be seated or not. After a couple minutes of the bartender ignoring us, we sat down at a table close to the bar. I'm really not exaggerating when I say we waited probably 20 minutes for the bartender (who had just been standing there doing basically nothing) to finally acknowledge us and ask "are you guys alright?" So we ask if we can have menus...he brings them and walks away for another extended period of time. Eventually he came back and we finally got to order our food and drinks. We got an appetizer of boneless buffalo tenders, I got the grilled cheese on Texas toast with fries, and my friend got the chicken parm melt. Honestly the food was bomb. The fries were sooo good. And the food came out fast once we finally got to order, so that was a plus. Despite the awful service when we first got there, I'd probably come back because the food was so good. Came here on a slow Sunday afternoon with my husband. Almost no one in there and we are in our forties, so maybe that's why we weren't hassled about ID. Ordered a few basic drinks and bought the $3 hot dogs. Most patrons were 30's and 40's watching the TVs. Bartender was friendly and polite. Nice place to grab a drink or small meal if you're waiting for someone in the area, or you need a rest from doing the tourist thing. The small is very small, even the bathrooms are downstairs and small. I could see going here on a crowded night as a nightmare. Beer specials make it one of the best value bars downtown. Be careful to realize that the specials apply to drafts only. I need a review here and it made me laugh that someone made a stink. The best part of Sidebar though is the Big Buck Hunter--don't use the green gun--it's off. Try and beat the champion A13! This is not the kind of place you take company, or visiting relatives, or a boss you want to impress - unless they are impressed by incredibly cheap beer and incredibly expensive food. $2 for a beer/$7 pitchers Downtown are a joyfilled gift to recent college grads who aren't on the level of Trade for drinks after work. But honestly - $8 fries? Get with the economy. Their BBQ chicken pizza is made of pure happiness though, regardless of the cost. The servers are great. And terrible. All at once. I wouldn't go so far as to call any of the ones I've met "friendly" by any stretch of the definition. However, they are usually around when you search all over the two-room establishment (they could be anywhere). We usually get beer, but the mixed drinks have always been strong and tasty. The patrons are beyond description. Just, everyone. Blindly pick a random demographic and they will be here. From stuffy suits to near-homeless vagrants, they all find their way in. Sometimes it's packed, sometimes it's empty. I have found no pattern in this. I've been with big groups, I've been with another person, I've been on my own. Sidebar just kind of morphs into whatever we need it to be. With all these contradictory feelings you may be wondering why I gave them a 5-star rating. The clientele ranges from after work girls getting their drink on, to people that just want to drink. I was in the latter category last night. I met some Yelpers here after work and anticipated a grimy, dirty, bar and was pleasantly surprised to see that this place was not as I expected. They have pitchers of beer for cheap cheap cheap. The music they play is a variety so that was refreshing to hear. Oh, and you can hear yourself in here. The music was not too loud. The bathrooms were pretty small, but clean and had hot water and soap -- always a delight! I would return here after work on another Friday night. read more

I'm updating my review based on the reply I received from the owner, Sebastian. He contacted me to apologize and to assure me that the experience we had is not representative of his business. He asked when exactly we had been there so he could see who was working that night and check the security camera footage to identify the bros who gave us a hard time. He rightfully said their behavior was unacceptable and assured me they won't be welcome back. Furthermore, he very generously offered me a $50 gift certificate to the bar or to ANY other restaurant of my choice, which I accepted and received right away. He did everything he could to make the situation right--- I'm bowled over and very impressed. This is the sort of customer service I'd expect (but probably wouldn't get) from a 5-star restaurant, not a humble Downtown bar. What more could he have done? Mailed my gift certificate in a gilt-edged envelope? I haven't been back yet, but I do feel comfortable returning in the future, knowing that the owners sincerely care about their customers. Yeh... I'm one of those people who uses "Mehhhhh" in my reviews and that what the SideBar is.... mehhhhhhh... What's with the 2 entrances? A friend told me that they were going to be in the front bar which is what the server told them they were in, but to me.... it seemed to be the other side, not the front or the back. It was pretty much two bars in one location. Why they didn't just knock down that wall is beyond me. So yes, meeting people can be difficult here especially if not everyone knows everyone and you've got one group who started a tab on one side while the other group has a tab on the other side. Restrooms seem to be a nuisance to get to. And what about those who may be handicap and have a wheel chair or on crutches? Stairs.... no elevators... no handicap restroom. Are they suppose to pee in a cup? I hear you're not suppose to let your pitcher disappear otherwise you won't get be able to get another one... why doesn't the bar just buy enough pitchers to serve everyone? And unless you're a dude, you're not gonna get a drink from any of the female bartenders here let me tell you that much. The Asian bartender pretty much ignored me and the guy who expedites the food ended up making me my drink, thank you. She was actually more consumed in making sure her boobs stayed up instead of making drinks. But I won't hold the staff against the SideBar. It's more the atmosphere for me here that gave me the Mehhhhh feeling. Oh yes and it's $10 minimum for credit card usage for those that travel with only the plastics. read more

For what it is I love this place. Its not the classy bar youre going to on a date at, its the bar you're going to go to go gas a few cheap beers ($2 bud lights, $7 pitchers) and watch sports. Place is kind of dark and dingy but the crowd is pretty ecelectic and entertaining. Case in point: come at 1pm on a tuesday and you'll find construction workers putting down pitchers talking about their favorite tour with the stones. (and these people are going back and putting out buildings together. NICE) Food is surprisingly awesome and cheap. I got a turkey pesto with curley fries and couldnt even finish it, it was so big. I cried and begged for him to let me in so I could celebrate my friends birthday. Instead of saying yes he proceeded to recommend me to go "play in traffic". For my money, the best downtown after work bar (so far). Yeah, it is crowded, but sometimes a bar is supposed to be. If you want old dudes sitting around in a quiet pub having a pint, this isn't the place. But if you're reading this you probably don't want that--at least I don't. If you're out after work looking to start the weekend's party, this is a great place. Cheap pitchers, fun bartenders, and non-"Fake Irish" decor. Can't think of another downtown after-workish place that has that. Plus, the likelihood that a 50-year-old in a suit is going to hit on you is pretty low--woohoo!
