This is a nice little diner in the village of Grosse Pointe which itself is a great place to spend an afternoon. Honestly there are so many restaurants in the village that it's next to impossible to say that there is one place that you need to stop by over all the others. But I will say that you're not going to be disappointed by Sode Street. The food is above average for a local diner and the service I've had has always been good despite changing owners over the years. The main critique that I have of this place is that I feel it is in an identity crisis. Based on the décor you're not sure if it's a savvy bar to spend an evening at, a greasy spoon breakfast joint, or a place to grab a quick bite in the middle of the day. I suppose you have to credit their versatility and vision to expand their business but I feel that it cuts down on the atmosphere. Because this is a family favorite I will likely find myself here again. However there's nothing special about this place that would persuade you over one of the other very fine eateries in town. read more

Atmosphere is great. Fun staff although a little forgetful. Maybe the 3rd time asking for coffee was the charm. And I know it's not a coffee shop but the coffee was probably the worst I've had at a diner. Stick with soda or water. Our food... It arrived quick. We ordered some hash dishes with over medium eggs. The potatoes are chunked too large and therefore not cooked all the way and soggy with a crunch. The wheat toast was delish and my daughters mac-n-chz was really yummy. My biggest yay-The outdoor seating. It was really nice enjoying good company on a beautiful day outdoors and our waitress. She was super nice. Forgot my coffee 2x but still lovely. My biggest nah-When we arrived there was one family in front of us. Once they were sat, the host went to the people behind us to seat them so I said "we have 2.5 please" well we and them and actually one other party were all sat at the same time outside. SideStreet Diner is such a fun little diner with an upbeat vibe! I've dined here a few times for breakfast, lunch, dinner and carryout, and have been impressed each time. What's even more impressive is that everyone who I know who I've taken here (wide range of preferences) has thoroughly enjoyed it. Their menu is extensive, yet somehow they manage to do everything right. The classic club sandwich has real oven roasted turkey, and the Cuban is legit. Once, the waitress asked me if I wanted my Maurice salad chopped, which of course I said "yes, please!" and haven't looked back since. The tuna melt is one of the best, and they sell their chicken Waldorf salad by the quart. They serve beer and wine, and if you're like me and not from the area, a people-watching game to play would be to have a drink every time two different parties of diners say hello and stop for a quick chat with each other. I wish they were open a little later, the latest they are open is 8pm, so I take full advantage of calling ahead and carrying out when it's getting latish. read more

Come to find out, there are several on the menu, heads up, make sure you say the correct name. But, the server re-ordered me the one I wanted (I hate doing that but she was pretty nice about it, a little rushed/annoyed but I understand) and it came out quickly. I had the ultimate grilled cheese, it was so good, on rye with 3 or 4 or maybe more cheeses. If you love melty cheese, get it. The bread was perfectly grilled. Friend had the country omelette, bacon, sausage, cheddar, and sausage gravy on top. WHAT. With home fries, fresh potatoes. Def not frozen. Also, the cake selection was killer. Perfectly presented, in a row, 5 or 6 different kinds of layer cake. Choc on choc, choc w/ caramel frosting, yellow w/ choc frosting, choc w/ buttercream, FUNFETTI... I got the yellow, it had 3 layers, moist, and the frosting was the perfect sugary-buttery mixture, not mousse, not whipped cream, and not fudge. I loved it. I used to go here with my girlfriend i would just get a burger w/ swiss mushrooms n bacon.She would get the portobello mushroom wrap. It became a ritual of ours we loved this place and they never failed us. then one day we decided to switch things up when we gazed at the menu and saw "the salmon bennie" one of us was gonna order it but we knew that the other would feel some type of jealousy. so we both ordered it we loved every last bit of it we couldn't stop talking about it. This is one of the first places we tried, just prior to moving to Grosse Pointe. It has become a mainstay for us to dart out for breakfast or lunch. Pretty much everything they do is from scratch, I think. Very friendly staff all around, and a kicky vibe with lots of Elvis memorabilia. Excellent breakfasts, FABULOUS soups & chili, pretty good sandwiches & great salads. I'm not a big dessert eater, but their cakes look like they came out of a food magazine & my wife & kids swear by them. They also have other scrumptious-looking individual dessert goodies - all homemade. My in-laws love this place too, when they come to the East Side for a visit. Maybe a wee bit pricey for a "diner," but we still love it here. read more

I had heard good things from a friend who had visited four or five years ago. Once I stepped in there wasn't much room in which to stand and wait. The cashier came over and barked at the family standing behind us to close the door and close the outside door as well. It was said very sharply and the family turned and left. I'd have done the same, as I would not want to be spoken to in this tone. I was taken aback, but still waited for a table, was seated and ordered the Irish omelet. The server was friendly and attentive. We got our food, which was hot and looked delicious. While the food tasted healthy, it needed salt and wasn't flavorful. The potatoes and the omelet were bland, and I've never in my life had a bland omelet that contains corned beef. I let my husband taste the omelet, and he agreed it was bland. Maybe I would try again, ordering pancakes or French toast, but I could just as well stay away. read more

Yum! Great Maurice salad. I loooove a good Maurice salad. My husband had the meatloaf sandwich - OMG. Fab. Plus, they serve crinkle cut fries. Throwback to school lunches :) I was entertained by all the Elvis pics and loved the Detroit posters. They have a cute snack bar adorned with yummy looking cakes under cake domes. I guarantee if you eat your meal facing those cakes, you'll order one there or take a piece home. The best surprise? I would love to give this place at least 4 stars, but I can't because I have only been there twice so far and both times there was a "screw up" with my husband's order. But the food is very good, it all seems very thoughtful and they use high quality and home made ingredients, which seems fairly rare in Grosse Pointe. A lot of the restaurant food in Grosse Pointe seems like they just got frozen and prepped stuff from Sysco and put it together. That is definitely not the case here. I got the same thing twice because it was SO good--Salmon Bennies (Eggs Benedict on Sourdough with baked salmon, capers, hollandaise sauce and sour cream.) Comes with home fries which are pretty good, although I'm not a huge fan of potatoes. My husband had a Reuben on his first visit and substituted cole slaw for sauerkraut, and therein lay the problem...the cole slaw has raisins in it. Yuck on a Reuben. He felt the waitress should have "warned" him about that when he requested the substitution. Not to mention, in my opinion cole slaw is one of those things you don't need to get creative with. Then again I may be biased because I just don't like raisins period. He had to pick them out, but otherwise liked the sandwich. On most recent visit, I had the Salmon Bennies again (I swear I will try something else next time) and it was just as good. My husband got a bacon and cheddar omelette. When he got three bites into it he realized the egg in the center was raw. Cruelly, the omelette had to be taken away and remade while he sat there starving, watching me enjoying my breakfast. In all fairness, mistakes happen and this one was handled very well and very quickly. The second omelette was back in probably just over 5 minutes, was perfectly done and they made him fresh home fries which impressed both of us. So...despite a couple of hiccups, we will go back again because the food and service are very good (and I really like the atmosphere so don't listen to the complainers who are probably the owners of the shit-ass Village Grill...) the food here is VERY good, the service is above average and the atmosphere is contemporary and definitely not dirty at all. If we get through our next meal and it is just as good and there are no glitches I would definitely bump it up to 4 stars. read more

That is an egg sandwich! We buzzed over the Grosse Pointe for a quick breakfast before we left town. We got to the cute little parking lot around 10:30ish on a Friday. There were a few occupied tables and we were seated immediately. I ordered the egg sandwich with ham and my dining companion ordered the peasant omelet. Our food came pretty quick and man, that sandwich was huge! It was served with these potatoes that were crispy and delicious and were probably double fried. I tried not to eat all of them and it was hard. I did eat the whole sandwich though. It was greasy, buttery, cheesy and good. As I was eating it, I was thinking, "I bet they make a mean grilled cheese here." The food was good, the price was right and the service was good without being hovery. This is a good, reliable local diner. The menu is dauntingly large, but it has just about every dish you expect: breakfasts, sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts. Both the cooks and the staff do a great job. At busy times you will see folks sitting outside waiting for their table to come up. Believe me, the wait is worth it. I hope you like leftovers, because the portions range from medium large to really large. There are plenty of booths and tables, plus an outdoor patio. Not too noisy, just lively.
