Ordered from Red Olive via Doordash. I craved a "home cooked" meal after being in the hospital for over a week. My aunt and grandmother also got meals. We ordered the stir fry and also the chopped steak and meatloaf dinners. Everything was tasty and freshly prepared. Additionally, I ordered a spinach pie for a midnight snack. It was just ok. I probably wouldn't order it from there again. My entree was the chopped steak dinner. It gave me the warm and comforting feelings I needed. The side potato was so good, I wanted more. I had a very hard working day at work tonight. I wanted some good middle eastern food. Most of my go to places were closing for the night. So I pass by the Ferndale location on 9 mile road. I see that it is open until 9pm. So I go in to place a order around 7:45pm. I look over the menu. I could not decide what to order right away. So this rude lady at the carry out informs me that the kitchen is closed. Someone should have mentioned that to me as I came in the restaurant. I will not be dining there in the future. I'm so disappointed in our visit tonight. We started visiting a few years ago because my grandparents loved their Reuben sandwiches. They were giant. We could feed 4 people on two sandwiches. Tonight we ordered one sandwich for two people and it was less than half the size it was a year ago. The chicken noodle soup was $5 for a small cup. I had the chicken sandwich Gyro and twice bit into something hard. I kept looking for the culprit and couldn't find it visually, it blended in with the meat. I'm guessing it was bone?? I threw most of the sandwich away. My husband's philly had more of a deli meat style than actual thin sliced steak. We shared a small Greek salad that was primarily iceberg lettuce with few toppings. For takeout it was $45 for 4 people (including a shared sandwich). I don't mind paying that much for good food but the quality and portions are a fraction of what they once were. No idea what happened with My order today. You're usually My go to place for weekend breakfast, today you totally missed the mark. Gave My order to the Server, with SPECIFIC instructions on how I wanted things. Got home to find out I was totally ignored. My western omelette that I wanted with cheddar cheese came with american, I asked for a BLT with tomato and mayo on the side, got everything on the sandwich. I would like to let everyone know my husband Dino and I go to this Red Olive in Ferndale on a regular basis. Every time we have been there it has been a pleasant experience pancakes for breakfast or my favorite N.Y.Sirloin Steak & Shrimp for dinner. We have been going there for about a year or so and the service is great! even when there very busy the staff will stop and fill your coffee and let you know it won't be long before your food is out. I think the managers name is Tony he is always awesome! He walks to every table and ask if everything is ok. Always with a smile. It's hard to find good service these days but it's still around you just have to find it. We did and thats why we go there all the time. This review is based on one visit of several (primarily carry out). The place is around a 3 star meaning nothing crazy special, however, consistently good food and decent service. Today, had the worst service and worst experience. Ordered right when we sat as we knew what we wanted. Watched around as 5 other tables received their food which was odd considering they all were sat and ordered after us. 45 mins later I ask the girl do you know when our order will be out? She runs to the kitchen and then comes back to say a few minutes. Clearly didn't enter our order. Fine, no water, no extra plate for the little guy and when the food arrived it arrived cold. Which is odd considering I could see her begging the line cooks to rush an order for us. She just had a nonchalant attitude that just rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get how you can mess up two omelettes ordered with no changes from the menu. Cmon! read more

This place has basic michigan diner style food. Nothing wrong with that, except that the kitchen doesn't do a great job. Asked for well done hash browns and got back mushy potatoes. Well, I just read all the other reviews and I'm glad to know it's not just me. We eat there once or twice a month. If it's breakfast, we dine in. Never had a problem and the food is good. We've never had an issue with the wait staff. When we order dinner, it's always carry out. They have an AWESOME Club Sammy. They use real roasted turkey breast, not lunchmeat/deli turkey. The bacon is always crisp and the lettuce and tomatoes are fresh. Everything else I have ordered has been just ok/adequate. But we too have had several instances with carry out orders being wrong. I'm not sure what the issue is...often times the person taking the order is also running the register. Maybe they get too busy or are not familiar with the menu. Sometimes I will order a menu item but ask them to leave certain items off my food (moo green peppers is a standard ask). 9.9 times out of 10 that "special order" item is wrong. I once asked for chili fries...she repeated the order back and said "chili cheese fries". I said "no cheese, just chili fries" and ended up with fries with that goopy, tasteless fake cheese sauce only. No chili. They were gross. So I don't know if it's the order taker, or maybe the kitchen folks don't read English well or they resent or simply ignore "special orders". The moral of the story is: if you want accurate carry out, order exactly what is on the menu...no additions or subtractions. Last night I ordered a Club Sandwich on wheat and onion rings. This was our first visit to the Red Olive. Walking in the environment is very inviting clean the service was very good. The food was terrible. My granddaughter ordered fish and chips the smaller filet was very good the larger fillet was still raw in the middle. I ordered spinach pie and rice. The spinach pie was very dry and hard to cut into the sauce tasted like Campbell's tomato soup. My cup of chicken noodle soup was very good. When asked how everything was I told my server that the fish was not cooked all the way through she offered a 10% off THE dinner . I expected the chef to come out and speak with us . But he didn't. Like others have said, I also had really high hopes for a great every day restaurant in the neighborhood. Over time I finally just settled on eating there occasionally for weekday breakfasts because the waitress Jen is so great. Today was really the last straw; as much as I really like Jen I just can't give this place anymore of my money. It all really comes down Tony (the owner/manager) being so terribly awful. When I called they hung up on me 5 times , then someone who couldn't speak English answered the 6th time , couldn't get our order right , then after finally repeating it back to me correctly the 3rd time somehow a burger , soup , and chicken sandwich was 30 dollars - then when we picked up the food they didn't even give me a sandwich they gave me a wrap with only chicken and cheese with none of the other stuff in it . I had never been there before and accepted an invite to join pals. It looked nice, clean. I saw part of my group and my friend J. Informed the waiter that we would need to add another table to the two that were already pushed together because there would be 10 of us. The waiter looked confused by this so we explained again & he got another table over & gave us menus. Once the rest of our party arrived the waiter we indicated we were ready to place our orders and let him know there would be separate checks for 6. R. began to tell him who would be on who's check but the waiter looked confused again & asked R. to let him know later. He began to take orders. R. was giving his order & just as he was finishing the waiter turned completely away from him. R. had his menu still open and mouth about to speak and this kid just turned his back to him, literally. R. and I made eye contact with each other. R. was not happy about that. I thought it was rude too but we gave the waiter a pass - perhaps he didn't realize or know any better? The waiter continued to take food and drink orders. The waiter began to bring out the drink orders, asking who had what. R. was given his water with lemon but the glass had a huge vertical crack along the side. Before the waiter could sit the glass on the table three of us noticed and said, "That glass is broken." He looked at it, in that same confused look, finally saw the crack and took it back. Can't remember if he apologized. He came back with a new glass of water but no lemon. Sent him back for lemon which he brought right out. Soups were brought out and he didn't know who's was who's with that as with the drinks. I had lemon rice and it was very good soup so I had high hopes for the rest of my meal (moussaka and fries). Once the meals came, again, he didn't know who's meals were who's. Another waitress was giving him a hand with a few of the plates. She sat R.'s in front of him warning it was a hot place, not to touch it right away. Our waiter leaned over from the other side of the table to hand me my plate & I said, "If it's hot I don't want to touch it. Could you walk it around please?" I was sitting on the end of the other side of the table. He'd have to just walk around the end (two peoples worth of space). Instead of walking it over, he simply leaned a bit more and practically tossed my plate infant of me. He sat my friend C.'s plate in front of him so awkwardly that one of his chicken strips scooted right off of his plate onto the table. (I asked C. a little later if his chicken strips were as overcooked as they looked & he said yes.) Not making a good 1st impression on me. And the food, though promising at first with that lovely chicken lemon rice soup, was a big disappointment. My moussaka which is beef/eggplant and a cream top was was about 2 to 2.5" thick & mostly the cream top (which is my favorite part, to be honest). There should never be a thicker cream layer than the beef/eggplant layer. The eggplant peels (the little bit that there was) were a bit tough too. The fries looked good, Pale/yellow/golden appearance but once I began to eat them I found them to be overcooked. The insides of the fries seemed dried out...perhaps freezer burned? The waiter refilled some of our drinks but didn't even ask some of us. Then he came while we were eating and got the separation of the bills in order and left them for us. R. said he was going to complain to management about the service. I told him I would back him up & add a complaint about the fries. We went up to pay our bills & speak the person at the register (who happened to be the waitress that warned R about the hot plate). Before R could finish his comment about the service, she nodded yes & said that she saw the waiter was having a hard time with it all and that's why she was helping him with he orders when they came out. She asked if we wanted to speak to the management and we said, "Yes, please." R. told her we would wait over by the side of the kitchen so we didn't get overheard by or disrupt other diners. R and I stood there less than a minute when we say a man motion to us to come sit at a booth with him. (manners would have had him walk to us, introduce himself & ask us to follow him but that's ok, just waive us, the already annoyed patrons, on over). We walked over and sat down. He said he was the manager/owner. His name was Tony. R. introduced himself and began, politely and directly, asking that he be heard out before responded to. Tony agreed but you could feel the defensiveness pouring out of him. R told him everything. Tony replied that he's never had anything but compliments about this waiter, that he was his best. Tony said we should have asked for him as sooner. We explained we were hoping the waiter would redeem himself at some point. out of characters - short version - mgr. was defensive, argumentative , not hearing us. I too was part of the party of 10 on 090317 along with NL and RS who have also commented here. Everything they have conveyed is true. The cracked glass of water had a broken out piece out of the lip with a crack extending the entire length of the glass. There was no appolgy or acknowledgement. The rudeness of the waiter has been previously noted. The food was decidedly not appetizing. I ordered breakfast, you can't screw up breakfast right?!?...wrong! The unprofessional service was not acceptable and when my friends spoke to management there was no acknowledgment or acceptance of anything. It's sad because the location is great and there is a need for a good "family " style restaurant in the Ferndale area. Sadly this is not the place and should be avoided at all cost! Placed a carry out outer, the woman on the phone literally repeated it word for word to make sure everything was correct. I pick my order up, come home realize not a single item was right and some of it missing completely. While I should've checked before leaving I guess I assumed they had it together, but was severely mistaken. After driving back, they refused a refund and instead implied that it was my fault for not ordering it correctly to begin with. The entire interaction was completely unprofessional and irritating. This is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. There service is so bad it is mind boggling. The fact that it has 4 stars makes me think less of the people that live in my city. I've gone here pretty consistently since they have opened and I don't think they have ever gotten my order right without something going wrong. It is a collection of the dumbest people to ever walk the earth. The worst part is the food is pretty decent but you will never get what you actually order or they will let it sit on the counter while you sit waiting for your carry out because the lady behind the counter is to dim to read a ticket.
