The women in there were so horrible to me and my boyfriend ordering takeout, didn't even acknowledge us when we walked in and then when we asked a simple question they both scolded us for even asking. A basic tomato base with stewed tomato chunks and fresh basil just floating around doing the back stroke waiting for you to swoon over it's awesomeness! Now for the Mac and Cheese.....it's the kind you dream of. You know the thick rich creamy kind that's a little toasty on top. The kind your spoon sinks into and will stand straight up in it's so thick and delish. ITS THAT KIND!! My BF got a burger! The burgers are great they have a large list of build your own type items all fresh and perfect!! He got shrooms swiss onions peppers and something else. This came with a cup of soup and great crispy fries! Needless to say we left there with very happy bellies and the price was on. For us to feast and have the best service it was $20! HI I LIKE THAT!! So if and or when you are skipping thru the Village check it out. I love they always have a variety of fresh cakes under old glass cake dishes on the counter too!! This place has excellent food. This is just based on several carry-outs that we've had at work, but they all were remarkable. The food is prepared with much care and finesse-deliciously spiced and very generously portioned. Everything we've tried from there has been amazing. The tomato vinaigrette that comes with the Greek salad is seriously the tastiest dressing I've ever had! Coworkers tasted it and eyes were rolling back. It is rare that I can say that I have frequented a restaurant as many times as I have the Side Street Diner. With working in Grosse Pointe and living nearly an hour away, I needed a place to get dinner almost twice a week every week. I can say that I have never had a bad meal. When talking with the owner, she stated she makes sure everything is made fresh. The burgers are great, and you have the option of building your own. The dinners are a bit large, so be prepared to either split the meal, or get a box for home. There menu is quite varied, so there are too many things to point out in this short review. The daily specials are your best bet - everything from Irish dishes to Steak Oscar. The soup selection is quite large, typically 6-8 different kinds. The in house made cakes and desserts are quite good as well. As a diner, it is top notch for your everyday meal and comfort food. (The one time I had breakfast it was fantastic as well.) Unfortunately, there are a lot of high end restaurants in the Grosse Pointe area, and this restaurant will be compared to them. To me, this is apples and oranges - if you are looking for well-prepared, day-to-day food, this is for you. Everytime I go here I am never disapointed. The food i amazing, and there is one dish that is very underated that is excellenct - their coleslaw! i would eat a bowl of it if i could, its not your traditional creamy coleslaw, but its sweet and amazing. The only thing i dislike is that they had to be in such a small space! they deserve a bigger diner. But the atmosphere and staff are always excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all day long. I was so happy. You know those days when it's 9am and you've been up for hours? That was me this morning. I wanted hot and plentiful coffee and I also wanted lunch. I got everything I was looking for and more. The Ruben sandwich is filling and tasty. The perfect portions of meat, kraut, and sauce. Plus a side of slaw. My son had the kid's pancake and husband had biscuits with gravy and eggs. The biscuit tasted great and the gravy was good and basic. We were thrilled with the serviced. Awesome local diner. We go here about once a week for a relatively quick, good meal. Lots of comfort food with several daily specials. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Service is prompt and friendly. All are welcome. Come as you are. I really like their meatloaf and turkey dinners. My wife usually gets the cod. Soups are always hearty with a good rotating selection, as well as a couple different chili options. Can't go wrong with their breakfast or sandwiches either. Good, authentic potato pancakes. Get the chicken pot pie if it's on special! They also own Sweet Little Sheila's next door so they have a great selection of desserts. If you like cake, get the cake! They usually have 3 - 5 options of good old fashioned frosted three layer cakes. My favorite is the yellow cake with caramel frosting, but you can't go wrong with any of the choices. Two of us went for breakfast last Sunday around 10:30. They were definitely busy but we barely waited a minute before being sat at a table outside - wonderful patio! The Patio is not on Kercheval, it faces the side street so traffic noise is very minimal. Our waitstaff seemed flustered, but pleasant and was trying her best. 4 stars because one of the other waitresses happen to mention the breakfast specials, and we were really glad to overhear. They had a prime rib and eggs special plus a house made breakfast pierogi plate with southern potatoes. We ended up ordering one of each ! Both were tasty, but traditional diner style - all parts seemed to be cooked in oil on a flat top (a bit greasy spoon) . Menu Is extensive with regular diner fair, more breakfast options and salads. We were not dining with children but many other tables were, seems like a family place. They do not allow strollers inside (for fire code reasons) but there are covered parking areas outside . Before the new owners took over, when this place was called Clairpointe, it really was a last resort restaurant for us. The menu was bland and boring and really the only positive thing about it was that it was a good place for a cheap breakfast. The new owners have livened up the decor a bit - though honestly you aren't dining here for the ambiance, it's a pretty standard looking diner. I'd love to see them remodel someday, but can't blame them for not doing it immediately, especially in this economy. But more importantly than the decor, they have breathed fresh life into the menu. Some of my favorite items from Meghan's (one of the owner's previous restaurants on Mack) have returned, which is great news. My favorite thing at Side Street though is the amazing and inventive soups. There is usually at least 5 different daily soups and they are all incredible. I wish they offered some kind all-you-can-eat soup meal because I would love to try more than one in lieu of an entree. I have ordered soups that I never would normally try just because I have yet to have one that wasn't amazing. They are hearty, flavorful and delicious, and we find ourselves going back weekly for more. I mostly stick to my favorite salad there, but I have had a few sandwiches. They ranged from average to pretty good. The soups and salads are the highlight of the menu to me. My boyfriend gives the burgers his seal of approval - and they definitely are better than Burger Pointe, across the street. The staff is friendly and prices are reasonable. read more

I come to this place at least 2 times a week. My fiancé Shane and myself are definitely "regulars" here. (The servers, all so very sweet, know our names) The breakfast is always amazing! Make sure you get the cranberry nut bread as your toast option. The Mexican omelette with veggie black bean chili atop is my favorite breakfast item to order. They always have amazing soups! The chicken salad is DELICIOUS! As a sandwich, or, order the chicken salad platter!!! Which is my personal favorite and comes with cottage cheese, homemade coleslaw, fruit and a "live forever" cinnamon muffin. Great place. Great service. I have never had a bad meal here. It's hard for me to order anything other than the Ruben or Dinty Moore sandwiches because the corned beef is out-standing. It's super tender, lean and quite simply delicious. One friend tried it based on my recommendation and proclaimed it better than Zingermqnn's . Soups are good as are breakfast selections . After spending many evenings working in Grosse Pointe, without the opportunity to return home for dinner, it was time to seek out what is good in the area. The Side Street Diner is so good, when I try other places, I almost always come back to this restaurant again because their food is so much better. At first, I was not sure I would try the restaurant due to its name - sounds like in a back alley way somewhere. Actually, it is right next to municipal parking in The Village (downtown Grosse Pointe city), and a parking building across the street from there. I have never had a difficult time parking. When arriving, they have their specials on a whiteboard when you come in. The soups are always listed at the bottom, and they typically have half-a-dozen or more freshly made soups each day. Some are amazing - there was a beef vegetable, a bean and ham, and a cabbage soup that really makes you enjoy soup as a dinner course! The room is bright and vibrant, albeit a diner atmosphere. It is clean, cozy, and has a family atmosphere. The wait staff has been really good each time. Sometimes, the owner will also help out if it gets busy. They always try to be great. I have had a few of the older waitresses give me status quo service, however the younger ones make up for it - they always have tried to make it great. Now onto the most important part - the food! The menu has a large amount of choices like any diner should. They have a small list of appetizers - beware, portions are big, and I have never needed to order one. They have salads, sandwiches, wraps, a burger section where you can make your own, as well as your standard diner fare. All of the food is fresh - this is the main reason I come here time and time again. I have verified it with the owner, and she has said they work extra hard to get shipments daily of fresh produce and meats in order to make sure everything is fresh. I have not been disappointed yet. Another highlight is the dessert - the owner is a cake baker, and she has some great cakes on display, made fresh daily. The slices are huge, and should be for two people. When eating alone, I typically will ask them to slice it in half and put the other half in a take home for the wife. On the weekend, when in Grosse Pointe, I will bring my family by for breakfast. The meals are excellent, well-prepared, and delivered with a smile as well. It is very busy - so be patient if coming at a time where many others are frequenting the restaurant. Some of my favorite dinners include the Turkey Dinner: freshly roasted turkey on fresh bread with homemade gravy (not from a jar), and real mashed potatoes. Another is the BYOB - "Build Your Own Burger" - always a great choice, and for $1 more you can get a bowl of their excellent soup. They have excellent wraps - my particular favorite is the Chipotle Chicken. Due to my line of work, I have had to eat in Grosse Pointe once a week throughout the year. Being new to the area, I have skipped around to many places in the Village, Park, and the Hill. Out of all of them, at their various price points, this is the most value for the food. I love this diner. Sometimes we come for breakfast and other times for lunch. Last week I came here for breakfast. I went with the traditional eggs benedict. They come with the home fries. It is always been my favorite breakfast choice here. I was so looking forward to it that I forgot to take a picture of it. The service is always good and friendly. They make sure you never have an empty cup of coffee or anything else you are drinking. Patio seating is also available which I really like. We will be back here soon. read more

The server took our drink order and said she'll be right back, 1st problem is she didn't leave straw, 2 nd she went behind the counter, and was not paying attention to us. 3 rd The Pepsi was flat. No Co2, which took her till our meal was 1/2 finish. Then she came over and ask me if I wanted something eles. We have had a problem with this place in the past. Not fresh food. Recently just ordered a door dash carry out from here, we ordered club sandwich which was good. We also ordered a chicken salad sandwich and it came as a chicken salad plate instead. We still ate it but then there was pieces of plastic mixed in with the salad. We also got spinach dip (came in a container with a cold piece of provolone cheese over it) and it also said it came with chips but it came with pita bread that tasted old. I was in for a bite to eat the week before St. Patty's Day, so I took advantage of the Irish themed specials and was not disappointed. The Irish Cheddar Cheese with three different cheeses including one of my favorites, Irish Cheddar, was paired with some pickles right in the sandwich, nice touch. The Irish nachos were the result of a leprechaun walking by and throwing up on some potato chips and I mean that in the best possible way. This is our local breakfast place and we go every weekend. I've never had such consistently friendly and prompt service at another restaurant. The menu is huge and the food is awesome. My husband and I usually struggle to decide between the breakfast burrito, the Mexican omelet and the Dinty Moore (corned beef and swiss sandwich with slaw instead of sauerkraut).
