I happened to pass by this boutique when I was doing errands in town and was very happy to discover Shunzi! It has a wonderful selection of women's clothes that are both tasteful and very easy to wear, wash and travel with. Some of the outfits I wore immediately during my travels. Coincidentally, my first review was almost exactly two years ago (9/21/17), and my shopping experience was as great as the first. I shopped with Faye T. who posted a review today, and I concur with her comments. Sarah gave us plenty of space to explore the racks (every single one of them), analyze, give each other feedback, chat with her, was available to assist, made quite a few suggestions which we bought, and concurrently managed to assist customers who wandered in and out and also purchased. I could tell that Sarah was quietly paying attention to our style choices (as well as rejections) because she brought forward an 'edgy' skirt that my friend and I had missed in our store scan, and ended up buying. We tried on a LOT of clothing, and whenever we set aside clothes that we passed on, Sarah quietly and efficiently whisked things away to make room for additional selections, or indicated where we could set aside the clothing if she was occupied with other customers. While there was a tantalizing sales rack outside (I bought the cutest sweatshirt dress with whimsical oversized sketches of dogs and cats on the front and back), the 'gold' is inside the store where we found clothing, purses and jewelry both at regular and reduced prices, tastefully hung and/or displayed. Shunzi has a Petaluma store too, so if your size is not in San Rafael, Sarah gets on the phone to see if it is in stock in Petaluma and has it transferred so you can try it on. I have been going to Shunzi's for years and it never disappoints. I have a 20 minute rule, there is so much to choose from and such variety and the price points are so variable that it takes that long to really see what is appealing to me. The staff is wonderful, helpful and easygoing. The clothes are excellent quality as well. The best part is that you get to be unique. No bland designs that look like you bought them 10 years ago. And lots of compliments. The clothes are very comfortable as well which is an added bonus if you work a lot and need to be professional but don't want to be frumpy! I find the customer service and merchandise at Shunzi in San Rafael to be extraordinary. Dawnelle and Jie are attentive and offer great suggestions, and the apparel and accessories are easy to find if I am just meandering. What started off as a perfect Saturday having lunch with my girlfriend and a little shopping on 4th street in San Rafael, ended up with being yelled at by the absolute rudest woman I have ever encountered in a boutique . . . and I shop a lot. We were in the store for about 20 minutes and had picked out several cute items. I had three tops in my hand for a total of almost $200 - I know, but they were very cute. We were ready to pay and my girlfriend wanted to make an exchange/return. She had bought a pair of pants at this store, washed them once, and the pants literally were falling apart at the seams. She showed the woman, I believe her name was Gia, but more on that later. The woman dismissed us at once and said "No, I can't help you. You have to come back on the 16th when the owner is here. No. I can't help you. If I take that back the owner will charge me." Come back in two weeks on a specific day because ONLY the owner of the store can do a return??? Everytime we started to speak to try and understand what she meant, because clearly this was a comletely absurd response - this woman would interrupt and raise her voice. She keep saying over and over again "NO. I CAN'T HELP YOU!" Several people in the store of course are now looking at this scene - because this woman is yelling at us - most of which left because of how horrible it was. I put the tops down that I was going to buy and we decided to leave - still standing there not sure what to do with these pants that were worthless and brand new. I asked the woman her name and this is where it got really bad. She yelled at me and pointed towards the door saying "No. I not give you my name. You leave NOW!" It was horrible! I persisted nicely and just keep saying that all I wanted was her name. She told me "Gia". Were were so upset. Customers should be allowed to exchange or return damaged merchandise regardless of whether or not the owner is present. read more

I'm too excited and I need to share this NOW! I was Refered to Shunzi by a client of mine. I told her that I always wear jeans but I really need to buy something else for different occasions. Other than jeans and sundresses, I've never found anything that fits me. (Size or style). Today 3/19/19. I walked in and Found what I've never been able to find. Pants that fit! That aren't jeans! I've walked by Shunzi plenty of times thinking that the clothes were too stylish and edgy for me. When I finally made it in and tried some luscious temptations on, I found out that most of the clothes are so versatile and well made, they looked great on me! The boutique always has new items in and if you can't find something one day, you can usually find something wonderful the next. The sales staff ( mostly I've dealt with Dawnell) has always had my best interest in mind and has a great eye and honest opinion. It's my great good fortune to live close to this amazing and inventive boutique in San Rafael. Of course, it's also a constant temptation. Shunzi has a way of turning up with each season's winners. I'd say the selection is more timeless than fashionista. So I'm still wearing the wonderful outfits I bought years ago and finding new things to weave in. I can shop for anything from a summer wedding to a casual dress cardigan. The staff is warm, friendly and unbelievably helpful. And they would never lie to you. I get honest feedback and creative ideas for putting things together with what I already have. Because they know me. What a concept. Also, this is one boutique that will place special orders for you and can show you colors in some lines they don't have in inventory.They are also happy to pull sizes and colors from their two other stores (in Petaluma and Los Altos). Great store. I wandered in during a day trip to Petaluma and immediately found a very cool necklace. I wanted to go back and get it after lunch, but they were closed. Stumbled into this store several months ago for a purchase pick up. The client I'm a personal assistant for bought a beautiful dress from this store. Over $300, but very flattering and tasteful. Called the store to alert them I'd be picking up the dress (It had already been purchased). Shunzi, the owner told me it would be ready. Got into the store and Shunzi said "Oh....Bad News...." The dress was missing one out of 3 huge artsy buttons. It was extremely noticable. Now I'm not sure why something wasn't done any earlier. The dress was for a function THAT evening, as Shunzi was already very aware of. After showing some dissatisfaction, Shunzi literally went into a full blown freak out in front of everyone in the store. Yelling, ranting and raving that the dress looked FINE and the button could be re-ordered within the next couple of weeks. I wouldn't ever shop here again. read more

My experience at Shunzi was amazing. I was going to a family wedding and really needed something to wear. I am not very comfortable with my body and was having a hard time. I went to Shunzi in San Rafael and worked with a girl named Erin. She put me in an outfit I never would have thought to put on. I looked amazing! I bought a couple extra pieces that agai,n I never would have chosen for myself. Erin is so good at fitting the right clothes to my body style. Very highly priced store, with the most stingy, rigid, un-generous return policy I have ever encountered. Only store credit is given. If you buy an item with that store credit, the item cannot be exchanged. After having spent ca $ 400.- in the store, I had $ 11 of the store credit left. Since the highly priced store has practically no items for that price, I asked if they would refund me the $ 11.- The answer was "No". I am very grateful that a store like Shunzi exists here in Marin! I love the merchandise because of it's unique design and wonderful quality as well as the fact that it does not go out of style. I have been shopping here for several years and have been able to mix and match my purchases old and new to create really fun outfits. My husband also loves this store as the staff and owner are so friendly and helpful. They remember our names and what we purchased from the past. I haven't reviewed any clothing boutiques in the past, not because I don't shop a lot (God knows I do!), but because lately eating out has been my biggest sin and no boutiques I've seen lately have really given me that 'Wow' feeling. That was until my girlfriend and I were out on 4th St. in San Rafael and decided to walk in. My God! The clothes were so cute. The look is unmistakable and the lines seem mostly to come from Europe--I saw Cop Copine, Casch, Sunlight, and lots of others I'd never heard of but which were totally cute. The sales lady was really helpful, letting me try on dozens of tops, skirts and pants and just kind of being there in a totally unobtrusive way. I hadn't planned on buying anything but I couldn't hold out and bought a couple of tops and a skirt that I absolutely love. A definite find! read more

I had a very bad experience at this shop. The merchandise that I had purchased had a number of wholes in it. The managers were very unsympathetic and stingy with the possibility of a refund/exchange. Shunzi can be a completely different store depending on who's behind the counter that day. The collection is always inspiring and beautifully chosen; I had "just looked" many times and when I finally decided to make a purchase, the salesclerk first ignored me, then looked me up and down scornfully, then walked right past me, ignored me for a while longer, then returned to tell me I needed to talk to the owner--all before I had said a word. Apparently she thought I was a sales rep (or who knows what), and therefore deserved to be treated rudely. When I explained that I simply wanted to buy a pair of shoes, she said, and I quote, "You don't look like a customer." Too old? Not fashionable enough? Who knows? If I hadn't wanted those shoes so badly, I would have been out of there in a flash. Apparently my Visa card DID look like a customer's to her. Don't know that I'll venture in again--too many other nice stores with consistently great customer service. read more
