I got the Shuckin' Flounder. As a New Englander, what a bizarre dish. I am really glad I tried it! I think I'd try something else if I came back. Basically they take potatoes au gratin, and a nice flounder with a nice Cajun seasoning. So far so good. But then the cheese that would've gone in the potatoes, set that aside. Seafood gets mixed into the potatoes. The flounder goes on top. Then the cheese goes on top of the flounder? Not the way I'd like it put together, but I'm really glad I tried a very, very local dish I'm sure I'll never see anywhere else. Came with fries and Texas toast both of which were delicious. As someone with a Cajun wife who lives in Florida - good oysters and Cajun food is hard to come by. That's why any time we are in Louisiana, we are stopping by Shucks! I absolutely love this spot and that's why I've been about 4 times in the last couple of years. Everytime we go we get at least 2 dozen oysters and usually grab the fried platter. I saw this restaurant while driving into town, so after getting settled at the campground we figured we'd drop in and experience some local flavor. This seems to be one of the more popular restaurants in town a local favorite of sorts and from watching the interaction between the staff and customers confirmed this. We were greeted by our server Mallerie after being seated by the hostess and that was the start to a wonderful evening of dining - we ordered a cup of the seafood gumbo which had a good number of Gulf of American Shrimp and nice Louisiana Oysters it was well seasoned and had great flavor with a nice mixture of roux and green onions that provided a nice texture it was served with white rice and a table filled with local pepper sauces. The gumbo was paired with a nice portion of crawfish étouffée and fried crawfish tails, the étouffée had a great flavor profile and the perfect texture. We also enjoyed a order of fried shrimp and fries and a side of sweet potato fries, there were definitely no complaints with the food, the service or the prices. Mallerie is a great server, she was very attentive and checked in several times to ensure everything met our expectations, lucky you if you happen to get her I know if I was to return here I'd definitely request her again. This restaurant was also recommended by the owner of the RV Park we were staying at, she is a life long resident of Abbeville and she is known for being direct and provided us with several recommendations and also steered us away from a few others. We recently visited with a large group for a birthday party. This is a straightforward seafood restaurant - basic decor and nothing fancy. Our server was very sweet and helpful. She did her best but was sometimes gone for long periods and drinks ran empty. Perhaps it was because we were seated in the porch area and she had other tables inside. The food was really good. We had raw oysters to start, which were fresh and shelled cleanly. I had crab cakes which were chock full of crab - no filler here! I subbed fresh veggies for my side, which were fine but nothing special. A side salad was also included. My husband got a seafood platter which was a lot of food. He said all items were done very well but some weren't as hot as they should have been. I got bread pudding to go. It was quite good. The sauce was a tad overly sweet for me, but that's a personal preference. Cocktail, wine, and beer offerings were pretty basic. Prices for everything are fair. read more

They In closed the front opening giving the ability to sit and dine outside, great move here, as wait for inside tables could be long. Service was the same, outstanding and attentive. And the fresh oysters immediately brought back fond memories, just incredible, fresh like it just came out of the water, the stuffed crab nice and spicy, corn and crab chowder had great flavor, goes great with the crackers on the table. Shucks is an amazing seafood spot in cajun country. It was one of the first places we tried in Abbeville and we've been back several times for their delicious menu and awesome service. They have the most amazing crabcakes I've ever had in my life. Seriously, they are the best! Their salads are great too, especially the seafood salad with their house steens dressing. If you want to keep it simple go for a seafood platter or a yummy poboy. The seafood batter is perfectly seasoned and the bread is fresh, soft and flaky. The name doesn't disappoint, as they have deliciously fresh and clean oysters cooked in various ways. On the half shell is by far my favorite. All the fixings are available for you to customize your own cocktail sauce. We tried their signature bread pudding and it was outstanding as well. I honestly have not had a thing here that I did not like. Worth a 30 minute drive from Lafayette, especially later in the week when they have live music. We bring all our out of town friends to Shucks when we want to give them a true taste of cajun cuisine. read more

What a hidden gem. Very nice location, the outside is well done, inside is just a neat hometown feel. Viewing area for the oyster shucking. The menu is incredible and food portions are big. If you leave Shucks hungry it's your fault! We had the Sassy Fried Shrimp for an appetizer. WOW!!! My wife had the Crab Au Gratin with roasted potatoes and the side salad, I had a cup of gumbo (so good, lotsa shrimp and oysters in a wonderful dark roux). I had the half order of Shrimp Patty with Onion Rings and a side salad. Everything was amazing. Our waitress was super nice and attentive. I do wish they had more local draft IPAs. We were in Abbeville pre-festival and someone recommended Shuck's for dinner.  It was a great recommendation. It was crowded so we put our name on the list and went to the bar. Our drinks had just arrived when our table became ready.  My wife ordered the Oysters Rockafeller and I ordered a cup of the crab and corn soup, the red beans, rice, and fried catfish (which also came with a small potato salad and a house salad). Whoowe was that a lot of delicious food...some of the best I have ever had...and too much for the bread pudding I had planned for dessert.  Excellent service, great food, and very reasonable prices.  Had planned to come back the next day for the rum sauced bread pudding but they are closed on Sundays.  Oh well, maybe next time. read more

. I've eaten here numerous times since this place opened. My late Dad kept two homes; one in Crowley & one at Intracoastal City, so Shucks was often "on my way". The foods here have never been equal to their main competition, "Dupuy's", "Red Richard's, nor the newer "RiverFront". But, Shucks keeps better hours-open and has larger shell parking area (very important for us who pull boat trailers). So, this is a "once-in-a-while" restaurant, not a destination, for me. Went on a rainy Saturday night, around 6, and waited 2 hours to be seated - and they said it was a slow night. Lesson is to just be prepared- but the wait is definitely worth it. Food was all well seasoned, perfectly cooked, fry was crispy - not at all oily, and light. You didn't leave feeling like you had just eaten your weight in fried food! Food and service last night was amazing. Only thing better was my lady and her grandson. We enjoyed everything. Suggestion Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. Passed through for ball tournament. Arrived around 6:10ish on a Saturday night. Waited about an hour for table of 8. Food came out at snails pace (granted it was prime time on a Saturday night and the place was PACKED) took about 40 minutes for oysters and apps to come out ( and be fixed due to having the wrong thing brought out) Waitress was super friendly and patient with our group of 8 but wasn't very attentive to our table. We'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she was busy but who knows. It had been a while since our first horrible experience so we decided to give it another try. The alligator bites had no bite, it was barely bites for the price we paid. Lacked taste and had barely any meat, just breading. Very small portion served on a big plate which made it seem like a really small portion. The fried fish was a three pieces that tasted store bought prepackaged. It was extremely salty. My son in law had a burger that looked burnt. My daughter was very happy with her shuckin flounder.
