Potatoes in the salad were not completely cooked and it wasn't any better than what you can buy in the grocery store in a container. Friend had fried pork chop sandwich. Bun a little bit burned. My friend ordered the smoked salmon hash and I don't have a photo of it because all three of us started eating it right away. This was not lox - it was a generous portion of salmon that's been smoked so expertly that it melts in your mouth. And when Chef Grant came back with a cup full of berries we were skeptical but they made the dish even better, the sweet perfectly balancing the savory. The only photo I have of the food is of an off-menu smoked pork tenderloin sandwich with smoked mac & cheese, and pickled onions and jalapeños on the side. Every bite of this was delightful with complex flavors and very well-balanced. Let's get straight to it. The service was great, the bathroom was clean, and the tables were clean. It could use a little update, but that's not what I'm reviewing this time. We had the papas locas, quesabirria, and fajitas chilingas and of course corn tortillas! The basic chips and salsa were brought to the table. The salsa literally tasted like only black pepper. I thought there is no way anyone on purpose puts that much black pepper in a salsa. Maybe an accident? It was inedible. Kinda of scared us with the start. The next dish was good but not good. Let me explain. The papas locas are just fries, with some type of white cheese sauce, guac, meat, and sour cream. It just felt lazy. It needed something to tie it all together. It wasn't until they brought our mains, with the spicy table sauces that it hit. It needs some type of spice, to mellow out the richness and balance and meld it all together. The portion was great for the price. Maybe add jalapeños and you hit something. The mains on the other hand were dang good. Especially the birria. In this world of food trends, the quesabirria is the current star. Most places have their own version, but the top two mistakes, is that the make its either entirely too salty or they don't add enough spice and it feels more like a broth for soup rather than a true consume. This place did neither. The munchkin has never said any birria is as good or better than mine. Well looks like the day came. It was absolutely fantastic! The corn tortillas, spectacular alone, elevated this to the point it's probably in the top three birria tacos I've ever had anywhere! Bravo! The fajitas chilangas were great. But the problems I always have resurfaced from time to time. First, this was cheap bistec, they just seasoned it perfectly. NOT fajita. The chicken was good, and the chorizo and jalapeno were a great new way to have it. The problem is there was neither enough chorizo nor jalapeno to take it to the level of the birria. It was almost good enough, but with the beautifully executed corn tortillas, it was more than adequate for our hunger pangs. The charro beans I asked for were actually undercooked. That is a first for me. They are usually overcooked. They had decent flavor, just needed more time. The table salsas were also good. Just enough spice, and just enough heat. Not salty at all. I work stop by again if I was in the area! We had great dessert, but can't give them credit since it was a third party.

Let's start with the cashier. A high school-aged guy who couldn't have made it clearer that helping customers--especially disabled ones--was beneath him (I'm using my residual vision to see you, Mr. Curly Blond Boy). My friend and I are both visually impaired, so we asked a few simple, reasonable questions about the menu since we couldn't read the board. Instead of answering, he repeatedly pointed at it like that magically made it visible to us. We explained. We asked again. He still refused to actually help. This wasn't just bad service--it was an outright failure to provide even the most basic level of accessibility or human decency. Ordering turned into a ridiculous guessing game. Items were out, but instead of clearly communicating that, he made us drag the information out of him piece by piece. At one point, when we asked for mac and cheese and greens, he said, "We don't have that," and just... stopped. No clarification. No effort. We were left to guess which item he meant. That's not quirky or busy--that's lazy and dismissive. The food didn't come close to making up for it. The sausage and turkey were fine, though the sausage had jalapeño with zero warning--apparently transparency isn't a thing here. The brisket was so dry it was essentially inedible. The mac and cheese had decent flavor, but the pasta was cooked into complete mush and again the secret jalapeño zing was added. It's hard to overstate how unacceptable this experience was. When a business can't be bothered to answer basic questions or make even minimal accommodations for visually impaired customers, that's not just poor service--that's exclusionary. The place was not quirky, iconic, or appealing in any way. The decor was as generic as the food and service. It looks like they had a nice outdoor area, but we couldn't find a way out there to check it out. Apparently there was also a bar, but we didn't know it. We were given to cups to which we added water from the soda fountain. There are too many great BBQ spots out there to spend your time and money at one that treats accessibility like an inconvenience and customers like a burden. I won't be back.

We added au gratin potatoes and creamed spinach. The au gratin potatoes are hands down the best I've ever had. We couldn't pass up desserts either and shared the crème brûlée and the icebox pie. Everything was decadent. The thoughtful cards & confetti left by the staff to celebrate our milestones were a sweet touch too! Be sure to make a reservation for the Chess Club Steakhouse soon!
