Lobster po boy
Anne P.

I was super excited to come here on a beautiful Sunday! We had ZERO idea what we were walking into whenever we arrived. And had No expectations except for that we had no where to be but right where we were LOL (thank goodness we had no plans, we ended up staying 2.5 hours - it was busy) We didn't see any signs about what the place was out of - we read reviews that they sell whatever they have and once they sell out that's it. So luckily we knew that. We aren't from this beautiful small town, but luckily have seen enough good reviews to ask the waiters (the owners kids) what was available before being drawn completely to one dish. Only two people frying, boiling, and prepping all meals, and only another two people service tables, tabs, and manage everything else. They bust their butts to ensure everyone is taken care of, yes it takes some time, but they have live music, corn hole, and everyone is friendly enough that you may be able to make small talk with other tables. The food is DEFINITELY worth the wait. We ordered, alligator po boy, lobster po boy, and jumbo shrimp no sides. Sadly the waiter came back to inform us there was no more gator and asked me if I'd like something else and told me what they had - so I ordered crab clusters - market price for 2 clusters the day I went was 28$ and I could only handle one whole cluster alone. I loved that they automatically served butter with it, I wish I asked for some extra seasonings on the side (YES ITS POSSIBLE, just be polite and ask) The owner of the establishment made us feel welcomed, made sure everyone was being helped, ordered, and if they needed anything he would sprint to get whatever was needed. My only suggestion is the place should have a sign by the entrance saying "seat yourself" and have a list of what they're out of or close to being out of. We will definitely be coming back for some more backyard boil!!

Sharing prices on sides which aren't on the menu, and don't forget to ask for an itemized bill. We were overcharged!

This place could have become our go-to for crawfish but we'll never visit here again. I read several recommendations that they have the best crawfish, but that wasn't our experience. Food wise, the seasoning was on point but the craws were very overcooked and dry. We couldn't get any veins to pull out with the tails and the heads had zero juice in them. The shrimp was also overcooked and very salty. The atmosphere is kind of run-down, it's an all outdoor patio seating with some canopy cover shade. There were flies everywhere, constantly trying to land on our food. I definitely wouldn't recommend going on a very hot day. Especially since they only sell bottled water and no free tap. My second biggest disappointment was with the bill. We ordered 10lbs of crawfish and 1lb of shrimp. Our server asked us if we wanted sides and we said yes to all - corn, potatoes, and sausage. The shrimp was supposed to come with sides, but not only did we not get those, we were charged extra for those we didn't. When you get the bill, the handheld machine only shows the total and not the breakdowns. I even clicked on the screen to try to see the itemized bill and couldn't. We assumed the beers were more expensive than we thought, but turns out it was the higher prices on those sides that added up more than we expected. Side prices aren't on the menu, so I've attached a pic of the receipt so y'all can reference if you do visit. I ended up spending $170+ when we thought we were getting a great deal on crawfish special at $5/lb. Also FYI - the suggested tips on screen are based off of subtotal AND tax, didn't know that either at the time. Now the biggest disappointment and the main reason why we would never go back: I belong to a FB crawfish group where this restaurant advertises. I shared my experience hoping that the business would improve these flaws or even offer an olive branch for their mistakes. Nope! He responded with a negative response and blamed me for not asking for clarification at the time of payment. How could I have known we were getting overcharged when they didn't provide any itemization? Which you only get via email after you leave the establishment. I guess it's now the customer's responsibility to oversee restaurants' billing operations.

Empty pan. Noooooo juice

Drove out to New Braunfels to give these crawfish a try. Let me get the obligatory I'm from Louisiana, born and raised in New Orleans disclaimer that everyone makes when telling peeps how their crawfish should be lol There are preferences in how people prefer their crawfish so ima take that into account when I talk about these. First off staff is super nice. Everyone. We were checked on frequently, even by the owner while he was boiling. Very friendly. We got there right when they opened so I decided to try the gumbo. Now I always give places a side eye when they offer gumbo and it's only chicken and sausage. Usually when there is no seafood gumbo option the chicken and sausage is not gonna be up to par. And this did not challenge that theory. I hate to say it but the gumbo was flavorless. And seemed to be tomato based. I have a particular dislike for that style of gumbo. But still, if it had flavor that would have been fine. It didn't. I would not order it again. Now the crawfish. People like them different ways, spicy and juicy, spicy and dry, juicy and not spicy, etc. I prefer juicy and spicy. Can't beat it when you have to give the heads that second or third suck to make sure you got it all(yes I know how this sounds. It's a crawfish thing haha). These were spicy(good) and dry(not good). Super dry. Like second time I tried to find juice in a head I almost choked dry. I even took a picture of the bottom of my pan when we were down with ten pounds to show how dry they were. No juice at all left behind. This is not my preference as I said. The spice was on point. These bad boys were spiiiiicy. The kinda spicy where you have to tell you brain to shut your tastes buds off cause you have many pounds left to go. I liked that. The crawfish does not come with potatoes and corn so we ordered those separate. Those are boiled apart from the crawfish. They had no flavor but you can get butter, dry seasoning and other things on the side to help them along. So all in all, a good overall experience. If the crawfish were juicy to go with the spice, I'd definitely go back. As it stands now I probably won't drive out there for them again. But if dry, spicy is your thing, this is 100% your spot.

HUGE CRAWFISH!

DO NOT GO IF THE HEAT IS BAD DURING THE SUMMER. But we absolutely love the crawfish!!!! All you can it is such a PLUS DEAL!!!! They give you little cups of butter along with seasoning. I like to put the seasoning in the butter but it is a tad spicy which I don't mind. looking forward to going back again!!!

Best crawfish in South Central Texas!!! Josh and his team are cooking up the best flavored crawfish in New Braunfels. Definitely worth the drive from San Antonio!

Crawfish

The crawfish here is on point. The flavor is soaked in the crawfish and it is spicy but it builds up over time. Back then this place used to be BYOB. The owner we met at the time was down to earth and cared about his business and crawfish. I recommend bringing an electric fan if it's hot outside since this is primarily outside. Would I come back again? Of course. I specifically planned my trip to make it back for crawfish season and hit this place up. Live music is on the weekends. See pics

Stopped by for lunch on a rainy day. They did have covered patio seating along with heaters so we were comfortable. Service was great and gave us some wonderful suggestions! The food was delicious. I would have liked the flavor to be a bit more spicy, however, our waitress mentioned we could have ordered a side of spicy seasoning to give it more of a kick.

I was born and raised on the bayou, but I have lived in the Texas Hill Country for 30+ years and I've learned to temper my expectations around crawfish season. Obviously, it's gonna cost more to get fresh/live crawfish here and the experience will not be like it is on the Gulf Coast. Well, that's true except for Lazy J Crawfish just north of New Braunfels near South IH35 and Watson Lane on FM 1102. This is a small business run on a shoestring by a family from SETX. The hours and menu may change on short notice as life & weather happens. The kids may be bussing the tables. All the seating is outdoors. The dad drives into crawfish country 1-3 times each week to get fresh, live seafood to cook up in the tradtional Cajun way for folks who are homesick for the bayou. Mission accomplished! I saw a $4/lb special posted on the Book of Face and I had to do a double-take. In Austin, we're lucky to get $10/lb and half the time, a good 1/4 of the order is inedible (obviously deceased pre-boil, cooked-then-frozen-then-recooked, dirty, overcooked, under weight, and/or not well-seasoned). Given that I'm living half-time in Canyon Lake these days, driving over to New Braunfels for this magical crawfish price was a must gamble. I was not disappointed. Crawfish: fresh, huge, fresh, pre-purged, spicy but not too much. We saw the live sack come into the cooking area and were assured that we were getting a boil that was just dropped. If it were not a weeknight, I would have loved to hang out & attempt my all time record for crawfish pounds consumed in a single sitting (ha). The one diner in our group who did not wanna deal with "seafood hands" ordered crawfish etouffee and loved it. Also, these blue crabs were the sweetest, freshest, tastiest... The proprietor even threw in an extra crab, so I got 4 for $15. Guys! If you are near New Braunfels during crawfish season, go search social media for Lazy J and see if they are boiling & open. It's BYOB and humble - perfect for a crawfish boil. If you don't care for crawfish, they have alternatives like shrimp, pulled pork, blue crab, and banana pudding. Important to note: Cash Only and BYOB P.S. Generally, crawfish season is over by June, but weather & output can vary. Lazy J will serve crawfish while available, then switches to oysters, shrimp, and other options. Check social media for the current offerings & prices.

Don't judge it by just driving by. This place is AMAZING. The menu isn't huge, but you don't need it to be because all the food they serve is perfect. The crawfish are seasoned perfectly, the shrimp is cooked perfectly. The gator bites are awesome too. Best part is that it's dog friendly, with two very polite and friendly resistant dogs that will come abs check to make sure your enjoying your food. Service and staff are great and the owner seems to be involved and wanting to know how the guests are doing. Our family has found a staple in this place and will frequent it often. We had no complaints, at all.

Drove 35 mins for their crawfish. I wasn't disappointed but I don't think it was worth the drive. "Lazy" J is definitely the vibe. Very much backyard crawfish boil type of feel. I walked in and found a place to sit. I assumed it was a sit-where-you-like type of place because no one greeted me. I sat for 10 mins before who I think is the owner, noticed the table next to me was waiting without drinks or anything and asked them if they had been helped. To my surprise (they were sitting very comfortably like they'd been there for awhile), they said no, so I quickly raised my hand and said we needed to be served too. A young man came quickly to help us. Very nice, very friendly. I ordered 2 lbs of crawfish. Potatoes and other fixings don't come with, but ordered separately. Not a big deal- owner doesn't want to waste money when people keep throwing away the fixings. But the fixings were dry (see photo!). I ordered 2 corns, 2 potatoes, mushrooms and 2 sausages. The crawfish that were served looked dry too. They had good flavor but I couldnt enjoy my corn/potatoes at all. I ordered a 3rd lb of crawfish after the first 2. These were much more juicy. If I had to guess, they cook the crawfish and place in ice chests to keep warm. My first batch had to have been from the top of the ice chest, while I believe my second was probably from the bottom of the ice chest where all the juices were dripping to. Not a huge deal, but maybe have the servers get crawfish from the bottom of the ice chest when serving? Overall, If you live in the area, definitely recommend- the taste is really good. Otherwise, not worth the drive from San Antonio.

Best crawfish I've ever had hands down. 5 stars!

(we live in san antonio) but... the experience this time was just ok, not fantastic. despite hubbie making reservations 3 weeks in advance, and restaurant knowing it was a celebratory occasion, we were seated at the very first table - which faces the entrance. awkward location. we pretty much ordered same meal as last time. mexican shrimp cocktail - sauce was very thick in an off putting way, but shrimp was fresh and nicely chilled. hubbie got shrimp & oysters with fries. he's not one to complain much, but he said all were a bit greasy & not as crispy as he'd like. i had shrimp, scallops & broccolini. plate came with not very well prepared broccoli - with no mention from server before or upon arrival of switch. how can broccoli be both under & over at same time? unsure, but parts were very hard and others too soft, so it went mostly uneaten. i would have asked for something else if id known they didnt have broccolini. scallops & shrimp were well prepared, but light, velvety sauce from last time was replaced with slightly "gloopy" and a bit greasy sauce, didnt look or taste very appealing. brussel sprouts were drenched in some type of mayo sauce that was not mentioned on the menu. so "crispy" brussel sprouts were soggy. SO... how much of this experience was on us? we didnt complain, we didnt send back, but we would have had to send EVERYTHING back and this was our anniversary. we are not that picky that every dish needs to be perfectly prepared to our liking. but for is to encounter a problem with every dish? maybe just a bad night. but i dont feel like we received the upscale experience we paid for. only one thing was as fantastic as we remembered - the creme brûlée!

There's a bar area, several tvs around, and a great patio for outdoor seating. Being a crawfish place, it's super casual, and the place was packed by the time we finished. I told them they should start an early happy hour, maybe 3-6pm, selling pints of draft for $5 and pounds of bugs no sides for $7... we'd definitely go!! As amazing as it was, we spent over $80 on 4 beers and 5# of crawfish and at that rate, it rivals what we spent at McAdoo's...yikes. Still, got my first fix of the season and I was pleased!

Now my concern has changed.... I'm concerned that so many of us are missing out on this amazing place! The margaritas are some of the best I've had, definitely a home made mix, and the top off of "holy water" is pretty awesome. The wine selection is impressive and the owner is very well versed in wines, I'd call him an unofficial sommelier. The food was so delicious, the chicken verde enchiladas were perfect and the salsa was spicy but so flavorful. So many times anything with heat is spicy and bland but not this. I even got chips and they were thin, crispy and perfect. Everyone was so attentive and wanted to make sure that everyone completely enjoyed their dish and drink. I had two delicious margaritas and am not a cheap date and I was feeling it, which was nice... a slight euphoric/buzzed feeling that is hard time come by most of the time. It's definitely not Tex mex. You aren't getting the typical "Mexican rice" anything but man it is better. The owner reminds me of a kind dad/grandpa. The kind of guy that is just fun to be around, his staff equally friendly. This place is one of the few family owned restaurants that are truly welcoming and family owned. Give them a try.
