overall everything was decent, but it wasn't anything spectacular. i got the coconut shrimp and it was unfortunately overdone (very dry and not very tender). the fries were fair but nothing to write home about. the corn fritters were so-so, but the hush puppies were great! my husband felt kind of meh about his salad and gumbo. i should note we got takeout, and i know shrimp is fragile such that it will continue to cook after it's plated if it's not eaten *fresh* fresh. my husbands salad croutons were soggy - but we may have had a completely different experience if we sat down to eat, so take some of the notes with a grain of salt. overall, not the worst experience, but we may think twice unless we were planning to sit down at the restaurant for a meal. read more

My server, Lydia was absolutely great during my recent visit. I already kinda knew what I wanted, so I was READY! She took my drink order and shortly after my food order. The Reel Deal is Forreal! You get a drink , starter and entree (staring at 11.99). I selected seafood gumbo as my starter and the chicken finger basket as my entree. The seafood gumbo was very delicious! I added a little hot sauce for some kick. The chicken finger basket with fries, coleslaw and hush puppies was freshly prepared and fried beautifully ( the coleslaw wasn't fried)! Friendly reminder that the Shrimp Basket is the perfect little break from all the rich, holidays foods you've had the past few weeks! A little mini vacation, if you will. We started with raw oysters, onion strings, and fried crab claws and all were delicious. I love adding a little horseradish in my cocktail sauce for a little kick (it's literally my second favorite food). My Mom got the blackened redfish with seafood cream sauce (she subbed the rice for the shrimp slaw and was very pleased). She also got the Mermaid Water to drink and loved how it tasted like she should be on a beach. Dad got the seafood basket, which includes fried shrimp, popcorn shrimp, whitefish, oysters, stuffed crab, and fries and had no complaints. David got the pick two combo, and got grilled shrimp, grilled catfish, fried okra, and cheese grits (they're so good y'all). I got the shrimp and grits and the New Orleans BBQ sauce is what really sold me on it! It added the perfect, tangy aspect to the creamy grits. It was such a huge portion, I had the other half for brunch the next day! We dined at the Gardendale location and parking was no issue at all. Kristy was our server and so helpful and kind. Would request her every time! It's less than a 20 minute drive from downtown Birmingham, so y'all don't overlook it bc it sounds far away. They're running all sorts of specials right now! We dined here on a Thursday evening around 7PM. Place was crowded. We had the dog so we asked to be seated on the patio. The first table we sat at had a few extra guests already dining on it. (Ants) We moved to another table and it was really wobbly. I stabilized it by leaning on it. We had the Reel Deal (listed on the back of the menu). That deal is hard to beat. You get a drink, app and entree for a really good price. Tea was great as always. Gumbo was hot and tasty. I had a half popcorn shrimp basket. I had about 15 nice sized shrimp, two hushpuppies, corn nugget, new potatoes, and slaw. Everything was great. Service was a little slow but they were crowded, our waiter introduced himself as being on his first day on the job and we were outside the restaurant on the patio with one other couple. No complaints there. Food was worth the wait. Maybe not choose the patio. On this particular occasion we had been out of town for three days and felt like we should take the dog to dinner. So we were looking for outside dining. We have limited outdoor dining in Gardendale and I'm not into picnics. read more

We ordered Pick two combo platter and chose 1/2 flounder and 1/2 catfish for this. Both were nice , liked the fried catfish and the hush puppies. Coconut shrimp was crunchy and flavorful, my husband liked the orange marmalade dip too much, he dipped fries in that sauce. The inside atmosphere was nice and cozy. Server was sweet and attentive. We went here Sunday May 17th - they were not busy. They sat us but 10 minutes in still had not taken our order for drinks or anything. Then a couple came in after us sat and waited on immediately. We left never to return due to bad service. read more

If you decide to give the shrimp basket a try - just remember it is better at the beach. The only reason I eat here is the potato salad. I know that sounds weird but they have the best potato salad. This time we stopped in on Saturday night and the place was not busy. The staff tries but each time we go we have strange incidents with servers. This time the server told me not to order the fish sandwich because the fish had to thaw and it would be 30 mins. While I appreciate the honesty - this is a seafood place so that makes no sense. I ordered the shrimp po boy instead and as you can see they are tiny shrimp with little flavor abd a little overcooked. This place is just not worth the price. It was Friday and approaching rush hour. We were starving and, although there are so many great places to eat in Birmingham, we wanted to get out of the city while we could. Now if you look between Birmingham and Huntsville, you'll find some fast food but not much else. Scrolling through Yelp, I saw Shrimp Basket and we thought we'd "take the bait" and "catch" dinner on our way up 65N. Upon entering, there was no one up front and we weren't sure if it was seat yourself or wait to be seated. We stood there looking around and finally a host showed up and seated us. Once seated, no one waited on us. We finally asked a server if she could send over our server. We finally got some water, ordered and talked about our crazy day (it was beyond cray-cray, oh my gosh, you wouldn't believe me if I told you about it. Anyway, I digress). Since I wasn't driving and needed a drink to unwind from this insane day, I ordered a "cat 5" bushwhacker. The bushwhacker is a frozen concoction of rums and creams and other good stuff. The cat 5 was a float of 151 and gave quite the kick. I got a little ahead of myself and got brain freeze - the drink was awesome! We didn't wait long for our food. I had the combo basket with flounder and shrimp. It came with 5 decent size shrimp fried perfectly and several very thin and over fried flounder. Rounding out the meal was a pile of fries, creamy shrimp coleslaw, two hush puppies and a corn fritter that I really was excited about but was super disappointed with. I brought home most of the flounder and a pile of fries. I can't remember the name of my husband's meal, it was off of the special menu. I think it was mango shrimp but I could be wrong. Anyway, it was three skewers of grilled shrimp, a cup of the shrimp coleslaw (just regular coleslaw with a couple baby shrimp mixed in), grilled bread and the biggest serving of rice I have ever seen. We could have fed a family of 4 there was so much. He really enjoyed his meal (and brought home a big container of rice). I'm out of town for the week and hubby is fending for himself.
