Very rude service. We came in here today to eat and ordered to go. I asked politely if we could dine in and eat and they said of course. Then the owner came out and started talking about us an extremely rude and loud manner. They're spicy, for those who don't like spice. The smoked pork loin was perfection. You could smell it outside stepping out of the car. The staff was friendly and welcoming as we came and left. Took a drive to Moriarty to support this amazing restaurant. They've been in business for 25 years and the food and service are top notch. I got the 3 meat dinner with hot link (hoo. It has a bite!), 2 ribs and pulled pork. Soooo good. And their sauce is great too. Got cole slaw and potato salad as my sides with a roll too. Got a root beer float. Bottom Line: GET OUT OF TOWN!!!! Hit the road, Jack, and dontcha come back 'til you're well fed. Shorty's BBQ in Moriarty NM is super well worth the 45'ish minute drive east on I-40 from the Duke City to get fabulous vittles. Very well smoked & tasty BBQ, generous portions, moderate prices, and friendly small town folks (staff as well as customers) make for a fun & flavorful getaway day. Top Line: I've hit up the gang at Shorty's a couple of times now and they've delivered on very flavorful food both trips. On the first trip about seven months ago I tried out their sliced brisket sandwich with sides of barbecue beans and coleslaw. The smoke on the meat was very distinct and flavorful. The pitmaster obviously has his process well in hand. Portion size on the meat, as with all else at Shorty's, was plentiful. The barbecue sauce was sweet, sort of Kansas City Style, but with a nice bit of pepper/chile snap to it. The bun was sturdy & up to the job of restraining the pile o' meat, but quite tender on the inside. Beans were okay to good, with decent flavor. I recall the cole slaw as good on flavor and crunchiness. My partner in overindulgence gave the chicken plate she ate good marks on taste & portion size. Nonetheless, after we'd eaten what we could, we felt a moral obligation to try their hot wings. The flavor profile & heat were much in line with Frank's Hot Sauce as best I remember, which ain't a bad thing in my world. On our second trip up the canyon, I got a daily special of chopped brisket sandwich, pickle, bag o' chips, small drink (sweet tea with BBQ for me, please), & a mondo chocolate chip cookie from the pile by the order window as the daily impulse buy. Total damages for this feast were a teensy bit over $11, which is pretty much what my partner du jour paid for a smoked half-chicken plate that came with fried okra, onion rings, & a drink. Chopped brisket sandwich delivered smoke & tastiness that easily matched my recollections of its sliced predocessor months earlier. The meat was very, VERY tender with those hidden nodules of fat layer mingled in to make it moisty moist. The carne was well slathered with sauce, but not to the point where eating was untidy. Pickle was okay to good. Chips were in a bag. Sweet tea from their self serve dispenser was not as sweet as expected & at room temp. If you want it cold, be sure to get some ice in with it. Chocolate chip cookie was not as sweet as most (a good thing!) with a drier non-oily, nearly cake like crumb & texture that made it an excellent accompaniment to a cup of tea when we got home. Partner liked the chicken & said it tasted really good. Fried fare was excellent! Onion rings had a sturdy, very crispy crunchy coating on them. Okra had a delicate & crunchy coating on them. The crunchiness, coupled with the fact that neither were soggy with oil or darkish/burnt, says the fryer was hot enough to seal the breading pronto & the cook was paying attention to the food. The back end folks at Shorty's are top notch in my opinion. Gotta give a special shout-out to the bread at Shorty's! My sammie bun & partner's dinner roll were of the home made, not commercially produced, variety. My hoagie bun wannabe had a lovely toothy crusty top hiding a wonderously tender inside. While less crusty on top, the dinner roll was sturdy & substantial in a toothsome way. That such typically second string players as bread are so good at Shorty's points out what I believe is a sharp focus on the details of all aspects of their operation. We've found staff to be professional & friendly. The owners, when we've spoken with them, were exquisitely cordial & engaging. Even fellow diners were friendly conversationalists on both visits. Interior decor is old fashioned, but kitchy & funny with photos of what I take are family of the owners & goofy signs. A word of warning: While there is a plexiglass barrier as a corona virus protection between the order taking cashier & customers, the employees do *not* wear masks on the job. There is a sign on the front door to this effect warning customers on their way in of this fact. Just so you know. Nonetheless, I view the quality of the food, generosity of portion, and friendliness of staff as justifying the drive up the canyon to get to Shorty's. See ya there! read more

Mediocre chicken. I don't know if it's appropriate to say, but I'm going to anyway--- after we ordered we went into the dining room, and it is adorned with Trump banners, and assault rifles, and religious weird stuff, and all of those combined. Bathroom has NRA stuff. Yikes. I'm pretty sure that's not good business sense. I probably wouldn't have eaten there if I'd known. When I opened the door I was greeted by the sweetest applewood smoke smell and a friendly smile followed by a hello! The place was packed and we showed up after lunch! We patiently waited a couple minutes for our 3 meat plate to come out. - Spare Ribs....... to die for! You could taste the apple smoke, they had a light sauce on them and the ends of the bones were sticking out. As I bit into one I was praying it would be moist, tender, Smokey and sweet..... OMG!!!!! It was the rib I dream of!!!!!!! My wife hates ribs and she said it was her favorite meat! Brisket..... this is not that dry smokeless crap you normally get. This was tender, moist, Smokey and the thin fat cap tasted like candy!!!!!! The pulled pork...... there was plenty of crispy Smokey bark mixed in with sweet Smokey fresh tasting pork! The pork wasn't full of fat either! It was QUALITY meat! The poppers are an amazing treat as well! A little spicy, but amazing! Coleslaw was fresh and the beans were perfect. This is the only place in New Mexico (that I know of) that sells broasted chicken and it is really really really good. How good? I had a four piece dinner and then went back to the counter for 3 more pieces. Need I say more? Actions speak louder than words! The chicken is cooked to order and served seriously hot! I called Shorty's under good recommendation that their pizza was worth trying (I know, pizza at a BBQ place? Yeah, they have it... Weird as that is)... And this is what happened: ME: "Hello, do you all have any pizza specials right now?" PHONE GUY: "Yes, we have a 16" large with one topping for $12.50." ME: "Ok, I'll take that. Can I get it with half mushrooms and half green chiles?" PHONE GUY: "Sure. That'll be ready in 20 minutes." [20 minutes later] PHONE GUY: "Name?" ME: "Hi, um, Kai, picking up the 16" one topping special." PHONE GUY: "Ok, your total will be $17.50." ME: "Ummm... I ordered the one topping 16" special, so shouldn't it be $12.50...?" SUPERVISOR: "Ok, I'll knock off one of the toppings since you ordered a two topping pizza. That'll be $15.50." [I think this was his attempt at being nice?] ME: "Ummm... That doesn't make sense. That's not what I ordered." --- So I flipped a coin and decided to decline purchasing the pie... What the guy who was in charge there (I'm guessing supervisor; a young kid no older than 22) was trying to say was since they charge per topping (regardless if it's half or not) I *changed the order* when I wanted one topping half 'n half --- it was no longer the special. Then being the nice guy he is he decided to take my NON-special 16" pizza and knock off a topping (now one instead of two) hence the $15.50... Hm. *****So they failed to mention this over the phone when agreeing to my $12.50 special order and didn't clarify their crazy topping policy via phone either.. And what place charges "per topping" when you want a ONE topping half 'n halfed??***** ... Then on the way home I gave them a call, at the time still confused about why he threw out the $15.50 number... And thinking I'd give 'em one more chance since I could already tell they were in the wrong... He still wouldn't budge, and he never once directly clarified that ordering half this and half that changed the special from what it was to a two topping 16" regular pizza. This place is pretty good! I actually had the chicken fried chicken, bbq beans, and mac n cheese. The chicken fried chicken was EXCELLENT. I wanted to like the bbq beans and mac and cheese. The potential was there...and I ate them, but I think they needed a little more flavor (just a tad!). My husband and friend had the BBQ pork and beef sandwich. The regular size is HUGE. I'd guess about 12 inches. There was also a large size available...and I kind of wonder how big that one is! The BBQ sandwiches are really good. They were on fresh baked bread. Yummo! My family and I went here for years, and it was pretty good. We thought we would try again after a disappointing meal the time before. We like to support local, so we decided to give it another chance. I will never set foot anywhere near that place again. Would you like a side of Covid with your barbecue? Not a single employee was wearing a mask, few wore gloves and they were not enforcing masks for customers either. Not wanting to go to a fast food restaurant, my friend ordered chicken and some fried things. The chicken was dry and tasteless, yet the skin was greasy and soggy-and this was supposed to be the fried chicken. The fries were crispy but they were mostly grease on the inside. I wish we'd gone for fast food.If you're traveling down Route 66 or west or east on I 40, barrel past this nasty ass restaurant. They clearly don't care about their customers health and well-being. What a friendly place. We saw the billboard on interstate 40 and decided to give it a try. Boy was that the right decision. I've never seen a group if more caring young people working. They really go the extra mile. I had the large beef sandwich and my friend had the large pork. While the pork was solid I would have to go with the beef. They have several different homemade BBQ sauces to pick from. We just stuck with the house sauce. Next time I'll have to venture out and try something different.
