I have been to Shortstop many times before, but have never had an experience like this one. Upon asking a question of a staff member, I was spoken to in a way that was disrespectful, belittling, and completely unacceptable! The way I was spoken to was upsetting and hurtful, which ruined my experience before I even received my order. (Which wasn't even correct!!) Furthermore, my question was not even answered! When I questioned how he had talked to me and my family, I was met with an apparent zero interest in resolving the issue and was instead told, "Just learn to read bro." I consider this to be completely unacceptable and I can only describe it with one word; disappointing. I was left agitated to an extent that ruined any interest I had in eating my food; my experience was ruined. I DID eat shortly after leaving the establishment, but even the sandwich was made with stale bread and the wrong toppings, leaving me distraught. As I said, I have been to this restaurant many times over the years. It is a fond, annual destination of mine during my vacation time to Ithaca. No tomatoes in my sandwiches. After be around the town for 10 years, this is my first time stop by with high hope, this is the place I must stop by as soon as I have a chance, and for the real situation, I am very disappointed by had no tomatoes in my double sandwiches for my first impression with my dream place. Classic. I was only asked for simply lettuce, tomatoes and onions with slices beef and blue cheese. The order take a bit long to wait ( only 3 orders before me.) I walked around the shop, that was really clean. And I like the sign that said they served over million customers since they open, also 1000 customers daily. That's really impressed. Then I grabbed a cup of coffee with my sandwiches. The sandwiches was come in package wrapped. Then I couldn't see if I miss any ingredient. After I walked back to downtown, laid back and started to open the wrapped, then I found out I missed the pieces of tomatoes. That's really disappointed. I don't know their intend behind that, but they should do better/ more professional than this. Without any explanation, I feel like they can take advantage from any innocent customer. If I trust them and did not check in front of them right away, what missing in my sandwiches. And I feel like they took advantage of my food that I paid full price right away. And the staffs should be honest to my food and to customers at all time. Love Shortstop, and always try to stop here when I'm in Ithaca. They never close which is a plus, and the subs are delicious. I love the ordering system - you get a paper and circle your choices. It is a little pricey for a deli, so for sure don't expect a $5 foot-long. But it's a quality sub you're getting, not packaged meat and way too much lettuce. It can get pretty packed, it's not super huge in the deli area so my advice would be to try and time it so you're not hitting right at lunch or dinner time. read more

If I'm comparing this to other sandwich shops and delis, it does well. Great selection, pretty quick service and decent staff. If I'm comparing it to Hot Truck, I don't think it fares so well. If you are trying to replicate the Hot Truck experience at a store, don't. Wait until late at night, haul your ass up to campus and do the real thing. If, however, you are having a Hot Truck craving during a time when Hot Truck is closed, just realize that the sandwiches don't taste exactly the same (something to be said about the ancient hot truck oven) and the menu in the deli only has a select few of the Hot Truck sandwiches). Not one to ever post a bad review, but this experience frustrated me. Ware new to the area and stopped to get lunch while we were moving. We decided to support a local business instead of getting sandwiches at a place like Wegmans. Our first and last visit. The gentleman who helped us was beyond nasty. Instead of answering any question we had, he constantly snipped. When we got our 5 sandwiches and 2 salads, they were lined up on the counter, 2 of which we discovered were unlabeled when we got home. We are saddened by this experience but now know Wegmans will be our choice next time. read more

Shortstop is a hole-in-the-wall, 24h sub shop designed for your late night, after bar cravings. You will either get it, or you won't, but if you do Shortstop is perfection! Do yourself a favor and order one of the Hot Truck pizza subs on garlic bread, a huge mess or garlicky, cheesy, tomatoey goodness on light, fluffy bread with a crispy, toasted exterior. There is nothing in Ithaca more satisfying. The degree to which someone loves and understands Shortstop is perfectly correlated with how much I want to be their friend. read more

You can't go wrong with Shortstop Deli. It's like a Sheetz or WaWa... but with MUCH better food, and MUCH bigger portions. I don't know how they do it, but prices are very reasonable for the portion size offered, and they offer dirt cheap fountain beverages with purchase of any sandwich. The Hot Truck pizza subs are good too - however, at some point they discontinued using real sausage links on the "SUI" in favor of ground sausage, which, for me, just isn't the same. read more

I come here mainly for their Hot Truck sandwiches which definitely aren't for everyone unless they love melted cheese, meat, and grease drenched in sauce smashed in a crispy, fresh loaf that will become soggy in a blink of an eye if its not eaten fast enough. That said, they're so good I've never been able to eat them slowly except for the one time I got a Grand Slam. I'm glad to say it was good cold and reheated too. I've only ordered the SUI since I first tried it years ago but I've also sampled the others by stealing bites. If you only ever have one opportunity to eat at Shortstop and aren't too health-conscious, get the SUI+truck sauce and you won't be disappointed. As a byproduct of growing up in a city, I expect and dread overpriced deli goods, but Shortstop is dirt cheap for its quality and size. Pretty good sandwiches, and it's cool that they never close, so there's always a serviceable food option in town at all times. You order by filling out a little form and handing it to one of the sandwich makers, instead of taking a number or explaining to them what you want. In that sense, I guess it's a little more efficient. But I personally find this place to be kinda slow, considering how many people they have working. Sandwiches themselves are pretty expensive though, compared to delis in other cities. Plus, you have to pay for cheese here, which I've never seen done anywhere else. My staple sandwich everywhere is a large pastrami with cheese, which is like $11 here, when I could get that back home for $7. They also have some of the Hot Truck sandwiches, but since I'm not a fan of Hot Truck, I haven't tried them here. But if you are craving them, you can always come here when the truck is closed. read more

Oh the nostalgia. This was my go to place when I got the 2am munchies in college. The Sui is absolutely the best thing on the menu. Not that I've tried too many other items, but after I found this, I knew I didn't need to try anything more. It's cheesy, greasy (actually... the grease will spill out and make a pool when you bite into it), loaded with meat and tomato sauce, and stuffed between some perfectly toasted bread. Tips: 1. If you're a stick, get a single. If you eat a good amount and you're pretty hungry, get a double. If you eat a lot and you're starving, get a grand slam. 2. Get a drink with your meal. If you order a sub, drinks are like 20 cents. 3. DON'T GET VEGETABLES. The order slip says it's $.75 for unlimited veggies, but I was charged $.75 for each veggie. I contested this, but was told that this was how they charged. Anyways, face it. You just ordered a heart attack-inducing grease bomb; vegetables won't make your situation any better. read more

I originally came to know Short Stop as a late night eatery, with quick and simple sandwiches, my favorite being the PMP, (poor mans pizza) with pepperoni, on garlic bread. While not a culinary masterpiece, its a darn fine sandwich, at an excellent price! I recently took advantage of their "early bird special", a $2 discount on breakfast sandwiches, before 10am. And even at that, you will only wait several minuets, so relax :) Even if the sandwiches were less generous and the soda fountain price was not so ridiculous (buy a sandwich and add a huge soda for 10 cents?!) I don't even drink soda, but a good cherry Pepsi compliments a turkey Reuben very, very well... I love that they are open 24 hours~ This place is an institution here for a reason. Found this place on the way to the Finger Lakes and it just happened to be right off the main road I was driving on to get there. I had been driving for a few hours and was really building up an appetite when I saw their sign for "best sandwiches." I thought the staff was very helpful in showing us how to order and describing the sheets of paper to fill out, as we probably looked rather confused when we walked in and tried to tell them our order at the counter. My boyfriend and I split one of their Italian sandwiches with all of our favorite toppings. I thought the sandwich was pretty great and we got two yummy cookies to go. My brothers have lived in Ithaca for a long time and they have said great things about this place. I am not impressed. The people at the sandwich counter were rude and couldn't wait to finish work, they made my sandwich wrong (I just ordered the Siu), and they took forever to make the sandwich. The sandwich was soggy and did not taste good. I saw a ton of local people going in there for sandwiches and after trying them, I'm thinking Ithaca just does not have any good food. Breakfast sandwich one of the best in town. Get there before 9 am for a deal. Subs have many many options and are decent sized made on fresh bread. Fill out the sheet and hand the slip to the workers for them to make. Pizza truck subs very good. Fountain drinks are cheap with your sub. There are three different forms, one for breakfast sandwiches, Deli Sandwiches and Hot Truck. Each sandwich comes in three different sizes Single, Double and Grand Slam. I ordered the Pmp "Poor Man's Pizza", which consists of tomato sauce & mozzarella on toasted French Bread and added mushrooms. I usually add chicken but last time I thought I'd go nuts and added pepperoni, so much tastier. My friend ordered a Turkey sandwich on whole wheat French bread; it was pretty amazing. The whole wheat French bread shouldn't be overlooked. The fountain sodas here are ridiculously cheap but too bad they're Pepsi products otherwise I would have actually purchased one.
