I have gone to a couple of shooting ranges while I've lived in the East Coast-- it was fun, but as I've mentioned, "it was just for fun" (shooting lil cans, teddy bears, bottles, you get the idea) Moved out here and as I am getting older and realizing that my prince charming/knight in a shining armor won't be showing up anytime soon, I've come to a realization that I needed to protect myself--- not saying that I shall take up on taekwondo or a krav maya class but via our 2nd amendment-- I mean is there a more sure way to protect oneself than this? I think not. So, decided that first thing's first- learning to properly handle a gun PRIOR to buying one- when I yelped, I wasn't too sure what to think because there weren't too many reviews, however, although there were only a few, they were absolutely amazing! so decided to give it a try- and boy o boy! am I glad I did!!!! The main instructor, Edmund introduced himself as well as others- Shelby, Kent, Jim, Pete, then made all of us, about 20+ students introduce ourselves- guess to break the ice a bit, although it was quite awkward. The class covered about safety, how to properly handle a gun via lecture as well as hands on. After about 2 hours or so of lecture (which I'd be falling asleep if it was a boring lecture type of deal, but we were having such an awesome time) it was time for us to go over and learn how to shoot- FO REAL We were all given ear plugs and goggles then began our shooting practice- First- white sheet of paper- 20 rounds Second- bullseye sheet- 20 rounds Third and Final- bullseye sheet- 10 rounds My hands were sweaty and clammy all day but when it was actual time for the real thing, I was having a blast! no pun intended :) I owe it all to my hhhhaaammmazzing instructor Kent whom coached me all 3 times and was extremely patient and thorough guiding me through that I did the BEST out of all the students and received the honorary hat! Yes, a chick WONNNNNNNNN!!! take that boys~ lol I am planning on purchasing a gun soon, so I will most definitely be attending more classes fo sho! actually signing up for next saturday's course- on "how to choose a gun." I cannot waiiiiitttttttttt! I took one of Edmund's CCW class a couple of weeks back, and I'd definitely say, it was superb. Instead of the typical boring college professor lecture, he intersped lots of humor, real life situations, and best practice advice throughout. Though I've started into firearms only in May of last year, I've gotten the opportunity to participate in several trainings, classes and competitions (yes, Edmund just had to share with the class how "impressive" I was in the actuals), there wasn't much concept learning. So, it made me more appreciative of his class as I learned a lot, while validating those that I already "think" I know. I'd definitely recommend Edmund's CCW class, and am actually looking in incorporating his other classes into my schedule. Cheers! Took the Basic Firearm safety course. Having handled firearms prior to attending the class, I decided to take the class to have a good and solid safety foundation for my recently bought pistol. I would say I expected more emphasis on safety from the instructor. Having a child in my house, I did not agree with the instructor saying guns should be stored loaded. Overall, just surprised that I would be more safety-conscious than the instructor. read more

I had no prior experience with Shoot Safe Training, but chose them based on the description of their CCW renewal course. For training day, they have exclusive use of a pistol range at A Place to Shoot, a large outdoor range north of Santa Clarita. The range instructors are friendly, funny and extremely helpful, with something to add to improve anyone's shooting ability. I was particularly impressed with the scenario-based training. For not having an actual shoot house, the scenarios they created with mannequins and stand-up targets in CQB were outstanding. It was a type of real-world training that I have never experienced. and could not have been accomplished at a typical indoor range. Lots of shooting, with just a minimum used in the qualifying requirements for the CCW. They have you bring 300 rounds for your primary weapon. I didn't use all that, but came close. Lecture time was minimal, discussing the topics required for renewal, new material and legal ramifications of gun use/ownership. Renewal is now an 8 hour course, but with all the interesting shooting scenarios, went fast. I highly recommend Edmund Tan and his crew for CCW primary / renewal courses, and look forward to coming back. read more

I signed up for Basic Pistol Training for $110, and showed up on Sunday morning. There were about ten other people showing up for the course, making up a well rounded and diverse group of people of all ages and backgrounds. Edmund, our instructor, along with Daren and Jim (if I recall correctly) were all very friendly and informative. They all provided a great learning experience that was also entertaining, and if it were any other group of guys, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. I believe they genuinely care about teaching people the safe and proper use of firearms, while making the entire experience fun and personable. Whether you're an NRA member, you support law enforcement, are a Constitutionalist, or just want to learn the proper use of firearms for sport or defense, it's important to support your local gun ranges. If California continues to impose more and more laws that infringe on these basic gun rights, these ranges will cease to exist. Class was excellent and lasted almost 5 hours but went by too fast. Instructors were excellent and this is a must take class if you haven't owned or shot a gun in a long time. They help with updates to California law but can be a bit preachy on the whole NRA 2nd amendment deal. Regardless I will be taking at least one more if not two more classes with them. I came to Shoot Safe Learning because of a recommendation from my friend. I was originally planning to just take a Basic Pistol course because I wanted to complete some formal training on firearm safety. I also was planning to buy my first pistol and I needed to get the FSC card that California requires for gun purchases. After meeting Edmund and Kent I not only completed the Basic Pistol course but also an few more classes on different topics which total about 5 or 6 so far. If you're looking to get quality firearms training from a group of guys that are knowledgeable in their craft then you can't go wrong with Shoot Safe Learning. I was surprised to see that someone gave a 1-star review. Its funny that the unhappy person took three classes (or more?). Why keep returning if you don't like it? I have taken three classes (so far), and all of them have been excellent value. I continue taking classes because I am happy with what I receive. Edmund follows NRA curriculum and has VERY experienced trainers who volunteer to help with the training. I doubt very much that the volunteers would participate if they did not think it was a quality set of courses. I will keep taking classes because I am happy. If you're looking for a good school in the South Bay area, you should try taking a few classes at Shoot Safe Learning which is affiliated with the Sharp Shooter shooting range in Torrance. Ever since purchasing my first firearm last year, I've taken a few courses and have really enjoyed myself while learning a lot. Edmund, the instructor, is really a cool guy and also very knowledgeable and proficient when it comes to firearms. He shares so much great information and does it in an entertaining manner making class really fun. The last class I took was the Conceal Carry class which was very educational. We even had an opportunity to shoot a few rounds under the watchful eyes of the instructors to give us good pointers and tips and how to better develop a more accurate shot. I think that's important because you don't want to develop a bad habit but learn the correct and basic fundamentals to really perfect your skills over your lifetime. I've also taken an NRA Class through the school where we went to an outdoor range in Santa Clarita. This is probably the most fun and most memorable firearm class I've taken because we were able to learn various techniques and tactical moves. We were also able to try our hand at earning an NRA certificate by doing a series of drills while timed and I can proudly say that I was able to earn a certificate for myself. So if you're just a beginner or even someone who's been shooting for a while and looking to perfect your skills and enhance your education on firearms, I would recommend taking a few classes here at the school. The costs for classes are reasonable and most classes are held on the weekends. There's a schedule of the classes at their website. It was sooo fun. The time flew by. The instructors were funny, friendly, and informative. I've never used a gun and was a little scared. They went over everything. I won't say I'm proficient but at least I'm not scared. I can now handle a firearm safely. The composition of students was actually surprising. It was composed of doctors, lawyers, law enforcement, two minors with their parents (which I thought was awesome), and people who all just wanted to learn. All ages and backgrounds. Shoot Safe Learning school is a great learning environment. The staff is very knowledge and was able to answer all of my questions during class. I took the basic rifle class with Edmund Tan after buying my new AR 15. Having never shot nor owned an AR 15 I learned how to handle and shoot it safely by the end of class. Although I've shot many different types of guns before every gun is different and I left here feeling confident that I have a good baseline of knowledge to use this gun. My favorite part was the final drill where you get to simulate shooting 2 targets. I also took the CCW class with Edmund. This is great if you plan on doing concealed carry in areas that allow it. With this many 5 star reviews, you know these guys are doing something right! I can't really add too much that hasn't already been said. Awesome and safe way to learn how to safely handle firearms! Recent circumstances prompted us to purchase a shotgun. I wanted my my wife to know how to handle it if the need arises, and she seemed excited at first. The closer it got to our Defensive Shotgun class, she was getting more nervous. I've shot guns before, but never had proper instruction, so it was great for both of us. The classroom basics covered a little bit of everything. By the time we were range-ready, she was scared. Edmund did an awesome job of working with her, and believe me, she doesn't take direction too well. Or maybe that's just when I try to instruct her... After her first attempt on the range, she wanted to quit. Edmund worked with her again, and again, and again, until she finally felt comfortable. She was happy she stuck it out, and so was I, since she now has some experience under her belt. If you have a gun in the house, you, and everyone who lives there better damn well know how to use and/or respect it, IMHO. I took the basic pistol class the day before, so this past weekend was a real blast!!! We'll definitely be back. read more

I attended a beginner's firearm basic training class with Shoot Safe Learning a few years ago, and had a great time. It was fun learning the technical terms for my firearm and picking up on tips from the NRA-certified teachers to improve my accuracy and level of comfort operating and maintaining my gun. The classes go for a while though, so I would suggest you eat beforehand or bring a snack and a drink with you. It helps to take the Handgun Certification exam right after the class while the information is vivid and fresh in your mind. I fully credit the instructors with helping me save a friend's life - it was in the Shoot Safe class where I first learned about Hang Fires (when your firearm experiences a delay between when you squeeze the trigger and the gunpowder ignites to propel the bullet). I took a friend who was a first time shooter along with me when I went to my favorite range. We were shooting a Beretta 92FS, the US Army's standard issue sidearm and a long time staple in law enforcement with a track record of reliability. We had no expectation of gun failure. My friend lined up his target and squeezed off a shot, but there was just a click and nothing happened. He stopped pointing the firearm down range and started to examine it close to his face to see if some part had messed up. I suddenly remembered what the instructors taught me about Hang Fires, and quickly raced over, grabbed the gun and pointed it down range again. About 5 seconds later the firearm went off! If I hadn't done what I had done thanks to Shoot Safe's lessons, my friend would possibly have been killed by a fatal error in judgement due to inexperience. Took the NRA 1st Steps class on the 12/15/12 and it was great! The instructors, Edmund, Kent, Adam, and Rocky were very friendly and knowledgeable. I was a little apprehensive being a girl in a firearms training class and because I'd only fire a gun once before and I had practically zero knowledge on how to safely handle a firearm but I was happy to find that I was a few ladies in there and that they never make you feel less than because of what you do know. I had the impression that they really enjoy teaching and were completely willing and dedicated to helping their students gain the safe handling techniques. I left the class feeling so much more confident and found out that I'm a decent shot :-) I had so much fun and I definitely plan on taking the more classes to build my skills. read more

Sweet way to spend a Saturday morning. Went in for the NRA Pistol Orientation, which covered the basics in stance, gun safety, gun handling, and also gave you packets of stuff to go home and read. The class cost $100 and I signed up online on whim. There were about 11 people in the class and 4 instructors (1 came late). The primary instructor was a guy named Edmund who had a stock of geriatric jokes and was constantly catching himself in anti-California gun law moments. ("...uh, I shouldn't say anymore.") The class runs from 10:30-1:30 (we got out at 2) and involved a lot of emphasis on safety, correct handling and just getting familiar with the guns. There was a variety of ages and backgrounds, from retirees to students and dads with their daughters. I liked that they took their time to cover the basics slowly which made me feel comfortable asking questions (since no one wants to look like the slow mule holding back the class). I wish that we had a bit more time to try dismantling and cleaning the guns but I could understand why time was limited. Actual shooting involved 20 rounds at a blank page, 20 at a target and 10 to be "scored". Highest score got a prize. I really enjoyed the environment, although it was not on my list of favorite ranges. If you let them know you're interested in a certain pistol, they'll let you try them out for free as long as you pay for ammo (box of 9mm cost me $16). They offer a lot of other courses too and I'll probably be back for an intermediate course. All in all, fun experience for novice shooters or people who have never handled a gun. read more

Fantastic course- excellent staff - top notch training. I called in to inquire about the training, coverage, what was needed, expected etc. I spoke with Edmund and signed up right after getting off the phone. He is very upbeat and enthusiastic about his training and school. I dropped by to meet him the next day - had a great talk. The course was full of great information and plenty of practice for safe gun use and proper techniques. I spent a full day in the classroom and a full day on the range. The range shooting was top notch too. Lots of time spent of safe shooting practices, stance, proper defense shooting and the staff is right there with pointers and checks as you go. A fun shooting course with 3D targets you get up close and personal with. The end of the day is a timed run to see how well you put to use all the training you received. I've always been pretty comfortable shooting at the range but it's absolutely nothing like a real world situation where you have to defend yourself and loved ones. I thought it would be a good idea for me to become more comfortable in different situations and I'm so glad I decided to sign up for classes with Edmund and his excellent staff. Honestly, they are an amazing group of instructors with impressive backgrounds. They stress safety and taught me invaluable lessons to further practice and hopefully never have to use in a real situation. Three months ago, I signed up for my first firearm class (basic pistol). I arrived nervous and intimidated, as I knew nothing about firearms. My nerves were quickly put to ease when class commenced. Edmund Tan promptly introduced himself, his fine staff, and even took a moment to get to know each student. To my surprise, the instructors seemed genuinely enthusiastic to share their knowledge, and to understand their students' experience and goals. You really felt individual attention was given, and the instructors were very patient and clear when correcting mistakes. He breaks down complex concepts into manageable steps, and presents the material in a clear, thorough, and concise way. I would have to agree with everyone's comments on the NRA training course. I recently took the 1st Steps Pistol Course and can honestly say I left the training with a wealth of knowledge and confidence. I fully intend to return to take additional courses as I purchase additional firearms. The instructors are all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It shows in their training and attitude that the care about our Second Amendment as well as the importance of proper gun etiquette and attitude. I felt very empowered with my existing knowledge, and all of the trainers came across as educators. The range was nothing special, but since I was there with the class, I didn't really care. Others have said the Range Staff were rude, but this was not the case for me. It appeared as if there were at least 3 or 4 employees working there, and they all seemed attentive as people walked in and out. I'll be returning to both ShootSafe & Sharpshooters again! read more

It was a small class setting of no more than 20 ppl with plenty of one-on-one instruction. We were greeted with donuts and coffee before the range opened.All of the instructors were very patient, knowledgeable and willing to help out offering their advice. I took the basic handgun class and was incredibly impressed with the whole experience. My only previous experience was shooting beebee guns as a kid. I had never even held a revolver or a pistol before. What is great about this program is that it combines both classroom and practical training. They emphasize safety first, but recognize that it is imperative to have new students handle weapons early on in the class to get comfortable with firearms and to learn the right way to handle them. Every instructor was helpful and open to questions. They were warm and funny and truly had a passion for teaching people to be proactive when it comes to protecting yourself and your family. I took two of their classes this past weekend - the Basic Pistol and Defensive Shotgun. The instructors (there were more than one) were exceptionally knowledgeable and many have very storied backgrounds including: competition shooting, retired judge, former LAPD officer, anesthesiologist. They answered every question asked of them. They had plenty of jokes mixed into their instruction which really livened up the classes. There were many informative charts and real hardware (lots of it) shown to and handled by the students. Safety was emphasized throughout. The shotgun class was absolutely wild. Although I brought my own brand new shotgun, I had never fired it before the class so I was a bit intimidated at first. We were shooting with guns loaded, guns requiring reloading under duress, all the while getting pointers from the instructors. Pretty freaking awesome. I'll be back for more soon. read more

Wow! I just got out of this four hour class and I can't wait to do the next one. Didn't know what to expect and went solo. Edmund and his volunteer guys are the BEST. They were funny and serious all in one. Worth the $110 If you're interested in learning to shoot a pistol. The class was full but we had plenty of range time. Many classmates had never shot a gun and did great. You can bring your own (see their instructions) or you can use one of their .22s. I really liked seeing different handgun types and being able to handle them (unloaded). There were about 7 instructors there for approx 14 of us These guys are EXCELLENT, organized, and they know how to run a class well. Combined, their experience is nothing but the best.
