Course taken: Beginner Pistol Training Course Summary: 2-day course. First day was in the office where topics were covered via PowerPoint presentation and Pete allowed us to do dry firing with airsoft guns. Second day was at the range for about 1.5hr where he taught us safe operation (i.e. grip, stance, aiming, accuracy, loading, unloading). Special remarks: Pete's dedication to gun safety and safe gun operation is apparent in the way he teaches. He is passionate about safety and an enthusiastic teacher which made the class fun. One of his most valuable strengths is that he was able to teach in a way that I could understand. (Side note: I am afraid of guns but took this class to combat that fear!) Pete was able to keep the class engaged, provided constructive feedback, and attention to detail. With his guidance and support, I was able to see a significant improvement in my grouping and decrease my fear of guns overall. I did the beginners pistol course, which involved one session of classroom learning, and then one of live shooting at the range. Can't say enough good things about Pete and my experience here. Complete beginner, never fired a gun (aside from airsoft), but Pete was welcoming, supremely knowledgeable, practical, and approached firearm training both with respect for the practice (SAFETY FIRST!), and a healthy amount of humor to keep the experience light and enjoyable. I couldn't recommend FST 360 and firearm safety training in general any more. I of course searched the internet for opinions on whether instructor led courses were still recommended in a time where information is free and the internet is packed with resources. I took the 2-day firearm training. I'm not the stereotypical demographic of a gun owner; I'm a small, artsy woman who prefers to understand people's differences rather than fear them. That said, I also aim to be peaceful, but not harmless. This world is getting crazier by the day, and I felt it's time I learned to hold my own ground. I was very nervous to take the class. Guns are a whole new world for me, and I absolutely respect the power and danger they contain. I was also afraid of what the tone the class would be; is it full of gun nuts? Will it be boring? Political? Sexist? Happy to say it was none of those, and I felt like I got everything and more than what I was hoping! Pete, the teacher, is a real gem. I was in a class with two other guys and felt totally at ease and part of the group. The most political it got was a quick discussion of current gun laws that may be getting passed in California (and it was totally on point). The pace of the class is perfect. It's well-organized and doesn't waste any time getting to the point. On the first day, we covered types of guns, their operations, laws about storage and safety, options for safe and effective storage, posture of both your hands and body, building muscle memory for safety, usage in self defense, loading a clip, loading a gun, and a lot more! We finished the day by shooting a target with a BB gun on a mini range to test our newly acquired knowledge, and we get to take our target home! Oh, and you practice with a BB and dummy gun in class, so no need to stress. On the second day (you'll schedule this with Pete to find a day that works for you), you'll meet him at a gun range with other students in Artesia. Pete provides noise cancelling earmuffs, but I brought earplugs also. I needed both to feel comfortable with the noise level. We had two lanes to ourselves, and we got to shoot three rounds of ten bullets per person. On your turns, you load the clip and shoot your target. Pete watches to correct your posture and make sure you're practicing safe and effective techniques. After our first round, Pete took us for a walk to observe others at the range to compare their technique (or lack thereof). Amazingly, we beginners were nearly all within target while most of the other patrons were all over the place and often had sloppy (and sometimes unsafe) habits. I'm very thankful for Pete for hosting such a thorough and engaging introduction to the world of guns. You can tell he really loves teaching; I always felt safe and in good hands. I definitely felt like I got my money's worth, and I feel prepared to start this journey. read more

Long story short the beginner pistol class I took is excellent! Pete does a good job linking introductory safety information, explaining the mechanics of the firearm, and how to shoot. Everything is very conversational - Pete is a lively guy so it's easy to stay engaged the whole time. Group class sizes are small (first session was 2 people) which makes it easy and low pressure to ask clarifying questions. All of makes for a very flexible excellent course that provides tremendous value. I recently took my very first fire arms course with Pete and I think that he is the most amazing instructor and the best person for me to have found to train with! If you are planning on buying a gun for the first time and want to pass your gun safety exam this is the class you need. My husband and I took the training class with Pete, first in his office and then moving to the shooting range. Pete is knowledgeable and a great teacher. He emphasizes safety above all and will not let you get away with your finger on the trigger! I am 60 years old and was very hesitant to fire a gun. The recoil was difficult for me but with Pete's close attention and guidance, I became a little more at ease with shooting and did fair. My husband, who also has very little gun experience, did great! As we watched other people shooting, we could see the improper posture and handling of the guns and their shots were about the same as mine and they obviously have been shooting a while, given their equipment and the rapidity of their fire. I pray I will never need to use the gun we purchased from Pete for self-defense but at least I feel we are on our way to being smart and safe gun owners.
