For an establishment that makes you pay and tip before you even get to see how the service is, I expected the service to be better. We went on the Friday before Mother's Day weekend and were seated at the sushi bar after a 10- 15 min wait. When the waiter took our drink order, he said that it could be a long wait for food because they're really busy. What a huge turn off! So after at least a 30 min wait parts of our order arrive. Their sushi has really gone downhill! It was so loosely wrapped that it would fall apart. When the final one arrived, another waitress brought it out. I used to love coming here but customer service etiquette is always hit and miss. I ordered a Ebi Hand Roll for pick-up on January 2nd which tasted amazing and presented beautifully. we have since gone back to try their sushi and yum!!! it's so good and def their specialty previous review: we had been looking forward to trying this place for a while and were so disappointed to be honest. the edamame was good and sauce was yummy, but i've had better spicy edamame. this edamame wasn't actually spicy either. the ramen was very bland and mostly flavorless even after adding the black garlic oil (which was $1 extra on top of the $2 extra for tonkotsu ramen). the ramen portion was pretty big though. overall, this place wasn't bad, but we just weren't very impressed. this place is definitely known more so for their sushi so might be worth trying again. read more

My family and I tried ShoMi on a Saturday afternoon. We were in the mood for sushi and found a few choices on Yelp to try. While the reviews were mixed, we decided on ShoMi since it's been around for 20 years and located at the convenient Lincoln Shopping Center (which has plenty of available parking). Upon entering the restaurant, we stood at the front counter and watched several people go back and forth (putting orders to go, answering phones, and whatnot) but it took several minutes before anyone stopped to greet us. They informed us that we can order at that front counter or via phone app if we wanted to seat ourselves. We thought that was off-putting for a sit-down restaurant yet we didn't turn back. We found ourselves a seat and proceeded to go through their menu via our cell phones. The item that I wanted to order online kept prompting me to answer questions that didn't apply to the item (tempura). After trying several times, I gave up and ended up getting up to place our order at the front counter. By the time we sat back down, a waitress finally came by to bring us water. I showed her how messed up their online page was and she apologized but didn't seem interested in informing anyone at the restaurant to fix the problem. The sad thing about our experience is that waitress was the best thing about our visit. She was friendly and checked up on us throughout our meal. Besides the tempura, we also ordered udon noodles and fried squid. All of which were fairly flavorless. And, the thick coating on the tempura and squid made the dishes taste extra greasy. read more

Excited to try this new limited menu sushi combo bowls. You can choose from tuna or salmon set my coworkers ordered salmon and I wanted to try the tuna. The staff were very nice and gave us all the condiments we needed from Ponzu sauce to spicy mayo and siracha. Although everything tasted well my co worker noticed a hair in my tuna nigiri thankfully it was the last one I didn't eat but was the first on my nigiri which looked amazing so I saved it for last in this case. Saving the best for last was the best thing I could do not for flavor wise but because she saved me from eating the one that had hair. They did comp my meal for me but because I couldn't see it I could've missed it. The staff did go above and beyond but respectfully I wished there was never hair on my food only because I felt sick thinking about how many more hairs was on my food. Inspection of the food should be done or hairnets when food is being prepared should be priority in this establishment or any food places. A Stockton must! Definitely a staple to try in the Central Valley. It's been there since the 80's | belive and honestly it's the best in town. It is quite small but during the week is probably the best time to go since it's not too crowded. All of their rolls are delicious and made with the freshest ingredients. The owner is usually walking around and he's such a kind person. This last time I went they messed up my order and I told the server and she said she would ask so the owner came and said he would get me a new one free of charge and to keep the current roll which was nice. Mama Mia roll is my fav and the teriyaki chicken bowl. Their drinks are also good although it's a small variety. They have weekly specials that change constantly but I would call beforehand to check. The California rolls are supposed to come with avocado and the avocado portion is so small you can barely see it. Everything falls apart before you can even pick it up. Came by here on Tuesday on Valentine's Day with a friend. We ordered the chicken karaage, Korean BBQ Pork, and chicken teriyaki bento box. I can't say I'm that much of a fan of the method that they use (going up to the cashier, ordering, paying first, then being seated). First of all, what if we want to tip more or less to the waiter later on? Second of all, the tips start at 20% and go up from there. The food isn't what I'd call cheap, so they should pay their workers more instead of try to get their patrons to tip 30%. The food quality was okay. Not what I'd call stellar, since I've had really good Japanese food. The chicken karaage was a bit thinly fried/not super crispy, but the seasoning was good. The Korean BBQ Pork was pretty good, but the onions were barely cooked on the sizzling plate by the end of the meal. The chicken teriyaki bento box was pretty good for the price- meats, white rice, edamame, a salad, and an orange slice. I'm interested in trying more dishes at this location, since I see that they specialize in certain specialty sushi rolls. read more

Last week on Friday we decided to stop by and have lunch since we were in the area. The concept here is different. You place your order up front first and then you pick any open seating. My initial thought was how do they know who ordered what and how do we know when our food is ready. They don't give you a number to put on the table or a device letting you know your food is ready. This place used to be The BOMB in Stockton 1-2 decades ago! Boy, do I remember each day and all day (particularly the weekends), would have to wait at least 45 minutes to an hour before your turn to get in the door to order food, then get seated! Always was a long line along its perimeter outside (even before business hours). Staffs were friendly and very affordable Japanese food! Loved it!!! Now, am not sure what happen?! No longer need to wait long lines, but price has sky-rocketed and less items on some dishes. For instance, my regular order (Seafood Udon) is now missing some seaweed and that pink/purplish fish cake slices it used to have, while price has gone up. Maybe I wouldn't mind the high prices if items there before were not missing or taken out. Oh well, c'est la vie, things change as the world turns! read more

I wanted to share a great time dining in with my family. My kids and I love sushi. It was our first time here and unfortunately the experience was uncomfortable. I seen a sign stating we can seat ourselves and order from the table so that was what I did. My communication with the sushi chefs was wonderful they tried their best to bring a server to our table. We waited awhile for some service. Nobody came. We seen two other family seated theirselves, and a server came and brought them water. I was hoping she noticed my family of 9 needed service and water but unfortunately we were ignored. I went to the register confused about how to order food or what do we do? It's our first time eating here. I was not aware I had to order at the register first before receiving our food. So I order at the register and she handed me my receipt and my order receipt. (Paid a lil over $100 on their food) Confused I sat down and waited again, nobody came. So I just told my kids we are not going to be dining in, I will take the food to go. My go-to's are the Panko-fried Calamari Strips as an appetizer and the Top This Roll. This restaurant is not your typical sushi restaurant. Upon arrival, you get in line to order (as if you are ordering takeout). Once your is placed, they give you a number to place at your table. All the servers seem to tend to all the tables. It seems to work out ok but tables do tend to get forgotten once all your food comes out. This place is casual and is located in the Lincoln Center.
