Dumpling U feels like a modernization of an old school mom and pops Chinese restaurant. Perhaps the target audience is more younger college folk? Non-Chinese folk? Unfortunately, I'm neither? The food was off. The flavors missed significantly. The beef rolls rely too much on oyster sauce and lacked balance. The sheng jian bao had raw dough on top, wasn't fried well on the bottom, and the "soup" inside was artificially flavored and lacked richness and depth. The Shanghai noodles were udon based? I've never experienced this before. The chili oil wanton were watered down where the chili oil couldn't stick to the wanton, which meant a lack of care to detail. The green pancake was fine. I've been urging myself to try this place after reading a lot comments and ratings seems fairly decent. Now after i finally got a chance to finally try it, here's my personal take but i must say that my comment is purely based on my own opinion. We all have different taste buds and different experiences with this restaurant: - The signature beef roll was underwhelming: two pieces cut into four portions felt like poor value, and I ultimately discarded leftovers after two days in the fridge. I still can't figure out what is so special with that dish. I can't hardly finish one of the piece That particular dish is tasteless - Seafood fried rice lacked actual seafood parts on it and tasted decent mainly due to MSG rather than quality ingredients. - Four small pork shumai for $9 seemed overpriced. - Overall bill approached $72 for four dishes (before tip), which felt excessive given the portion quality and value. - We've had consistently better experiences and value from China Palace for dim sum and overall service. read more

I've visited this place three times, and the first two times, it was so busy we couldn't even find a seat. This time, we got lucky and found the last seat available. It's not a place to rush; expect to wait for your food, but it's worth it because it's hot when served. Also they only had one server taking everyone orders and bussing tables, she was working very hard. We ordered fried chicken wings, dumplings, beef soup, and a beef wrap. The first time I stopped here, I ordered their House Special Beef Roll and a jasmine green tea and I thought it was pricy because it was well over $20 but when it came out, I realized how much I was getting for my money. The prices are totally reasonable here for what you get. I was also blown away by the preparation and flavor of the dish. As someone who has made scallion pancakes at home, I know you have to put in the time to get delicious layers like the ones on the food served here. The scallion wrap was crispy and fluffy and absolutely delicious! The sauce on the beef was really good too and I loved all the fresh cilantro. I wanted more because it tasted so good but I was just too full and that is a great sensation. Finally checked out Dumpling U and it didn't disappoint. The space is clean and inviting--great for a casual bite. What we ordered: 1. Deep Fried Shrimp Balls: Tasty shrimp filling with just the right amount of coating. 2. House Special Sausage Fried Rice: meal on its own! The Chinese sausage really makes this dish pop.  3. Each plate came out one at a time and was fresh. The food was really good. Flavorful and delicious. I was pretty impressed on how good the food was. After we were done eating I noticed a sign they had. They are the same business as the popular dumpling spot in Sacramento that I've frequented before that is award winning. The outward appearance is unassuming. On their outer window there is a picture of their 2024 rating showing that they placed 3rd for best Chinese restaurant in the Top 100 in all of the U.S.A. Ordered the jjajang noodles (black bean noodles, but this is Chinese style and not Korean!), house special pork soup dumplings, and the pork shumai. Everything was just okay. None of the items had anything special to them but none of them were bad either. I've just had better! The jjajang noodles were cooked al dente, had a nice chew to it and the sauce was slightly savory. I wish that there was more minced pork in the sauce but that's just a personal preference. Came with an ample amount of shredded cucumber which I appreciated. The chili oil that they offer on the table needs to be spicier though! The house special soup dumplings were delicious! No notes, I highly recommend everyone get these. The temperature inside was just right, not burn your mouth hot but just hot enough to still feel that epic satisfaction in your chest like a warm hug. The soup was savory and the minced pork inside was juicy. The pork shumai was nothing special. You could tell they were frozen and they just steamed them, definitely do not think these are made in house. This is my favorite item to get at dim sum, and I didn't care for these. You're better off going to the asian grocery store and buying yourself a pack of 12 for way cheaper than these 4 for $9! Though I am sad to see the previous food joint that closed up, I am glad this is what replaced this. Came during lunch time and it wasn't busy and got a table right away. Browsed the menu a bit and asked for a recommendation from our server to see which ones she'll suggest. Their servings were good enough to share within your table, family style. The beef roll were so flaky and savory. Filled with meat that it falls off in every bite. Soup dumplings came in hot and steamy, burn your mouth goodness. Pork filling was steamed and seasoned perfectly. The sausage in the fried rice was salty and sweet that it balanced the oiliness and sweetness when combined with the rice. Honey walnut shrimps batter was still crunchy and the mayo/honey coating made it a balanced pair. It also has actual walnuts in them that some other place does not have. Service was fast and great, our server made recommendations when we ordered the potstickers and dumplings because we were ordering to many things that were basically the same. The soup dumplings were fresh and warm and just so good! If you look at the pictures you can see the steam coming off the food, I love the food severed hot like that. The tan tan noodles were also Amazing, they had great flavor, but I was a little sad there wasn't any broth. Oh this place is goooood!! Stockton was in dire need of an authentic Chinese place that serves good dumplings and Dumpling U fills that void. When we used to live in Stockton, I'd always complain of a dearth of a restaurant like Journey to the Dumpling in Elk Grove (iykyk). My husband and I and a friend were in Stockton for some errands and I suggested we try Dumpling U for lunch. So far the reviews looked good and I was excited to try the food. It was a warm April weekday so we were one of only two parties dining in. We were seated immediately and the server was quick to explain the menu to us, given that it was our very first time at the restaurant. My first observation was that the tables were a bit small. Especially for a place that serves dumplings and family-style dishes, you'd expect there to be more room. The chairs were also a bit cramped. Given that Dumpling U took over the Korean hot dog place, my friend made a comment that perhaps they just reused the same tables and chairs, which would make sense. We ordered a variety of dishes to share and enjoyed watching the dumplings being made. The AC was nice and cold, and so was our water. I was happy to see the container of delicious chili oil sitting on the table as well. One by one our food started to arrive, and we were eager to dig in! The skins of the dumplings were all the perfect thickness, and we especially enjoyed the Sichuan-style chili oil wontons. The XLB were piping hot with a good amount of soup on the inside. The chive dumplings (since they didn't translate the Chinese on the menu but I'm referring to A11) were also super plump and filled, and came with a dipping sauce, which I mixed chili oil into. I was very happy to savor the Shanghai fried noodles, as I haven't had this dish in a very long time. The flavors were on point and the texture of the noodles were sooo thick and bouncy and chewy, just how I liked them. The spicy house sausage fried rice was delectable with a great flavor and wok hay, and I added chili oil to enhance the notes even more. I hope Dumpling U sticks around for a long time! It's located very centrally on March Lane in a small strip mall by Planet Fitness, so it wouldn't be much of a detour to go if we are in the mood for dumplings. While everything does add up, all the ingredients are fresh and I can tell all the food is made with love. I'm happy to report that I really enjoyed Dumpling U and am looking forward to trying more dishes the next time we visit! read more
