My husband and I stopped by this place since I was craving Khmer food. The pho was very bland, and they were turning guests away as they arrived because they ran out. So idk if they made enough to serve us quickly. Prices were a little funny. My husband ordered the Khmer dry noodles but it was an upcharge to have it dry. Okay, a friend recommend this place to be and it's solid. We had two bowls of noodle soups. One of which was the Kuy Teav Phnom Phen. The broth in this was just chef's kiss. The restaurant itself is a bit outdated, but I'm definitely here more for the food. I also read some earlier reviews about the service and I'm really not sure what people are talking about. I thought the service was great. I asked something to be omitted from my bowl of soup and it was not a problem whatsoever. Prices for this restaurant are affordable too epecially when you consider how much food you get. One FYI though: It is cash only. 2/10/25: Decided on a quick lunch here, since I haven't for a while. Quiet and steady. Food we ordered was two large beef noodle soups and a seafood chow fun with gravy sauce plate. I don't know if it was just that day, but all three orders were awful and tasteless. The beef noodle broths were just bland even with all of the ingredients mixed in. The flat noodles in the chow fun were a bit chewy and I expected more bits of other seafood. The gravy sauce to it wasn't slightly thick to my liking. Perfect salty/sour balance (if you want it saltier tip in the little dish of beans they provide) and good quality throughout. It's not likely I will be back soon because of distance so my review is based on one dish. But I have the feeling everything is going to be just as good. My family has been coming here for about 10 years. I've been there about 50 times in the past. We usually go for breakfast. They have provided a high quality rice soup at every visit. You can customize your rice soup with seafood, or just fish or chicken and they give you ample toppings and a special treat of fermented beans that I really love. Sometimes we come for lunch and they have a really good pho as well. My dad very much likes their hot coffee they make in the morning which is a drip style that is usually found in Southeast Asia. I think this is a pretty decent place! I got the Prahok, Chicken over Ginger Rice, and the Eggplant plate with ground pork + shrimp! Eggplant plate 5/5 - This was my favorite dish! Prahok 4/5 - I've never had this before so I have nothing else to compare it to but it was the reason why I stopped by. I thought it was really good! It's a fermented fish based dish I believe mixed with diff spices and coconut milk. So, so, so flavorful. It comes with vegetables to dip and if you want rice you will have to get that on the side. Really good first experience with the dish. Definitely on the sour side. Chicken over ginger rice 2.5/5 - Let's start with the good, the ginger rice was on point! A little crispy too which I liked. The chicken and vegetables on the other hand tasted a little old. My first bite was the chicken dipped in the fish sauce that comes with it and it just tasted a bit of to me. I found that eating the two separate was fine but together -- no bueno. The chicken was a bit dry which made me wonder if it was a little old. But still edible. The fish sauce was diff from what I've had before and so maybe I'm just not used to the flavor combo since I usually eat Lao/Thai food. Stockton has some really decent restaurants! Other pluses to this place is the pickled chili peppers + red chili paste which makes such a good veggie dip the way it is. They also have hot tea for a cheap price which is nice. 11/4/13 Late Afternoon Couple of friends and I decided to try this place. Pad Thai- tasty but chewy. Pan fried quail-savory but boney as expected. Ginger salted fish- savory, sweet with that ginger spicy taste but more on the sweet side. Cooked well. Make sure to put in a little work with your fingers if the fork isnt up to the task to get to the more tastier meat, dont be afriad to get your hands a bit messy. 5 Thai Teas Food was good, good portions. Will go back to try something new. Service was not so cool, I had to ask for refills to my baverages which were a water and a Thai tea. Mitapheap Restaurant is a eleven year old Cambodian restaurant right next door to my favorite Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Lucky. Mitapheap, in Cambodian, means Friendship. I made a mental note to try out this restaurant months ago... but had not been in the area recently till yesterday. And I hadn't had any authentic Cambodian meals since I was married... but that's another story. As you enter Mitapheap Restaurant, the interior is dominated by three 5' x 2' paintings of the scenic venues in Cambodia. One, of course, is of the Angkor Wat temples in that country; the other paintings are of the Cambodian countryside... very green and tropical. What I ordered... Curry Soup (#35) - Note that on Mitapheap's menu are soups that are pretty high-priced ($8 or more). The only resemblance to any soup that you are familiar with is that the contents come in a pretty big soup bowl. You will be confused when the waitress brings out a big (as big as the bowl of soup) container of rice. "What am I supposed to do now?" you ask... You are supposed to dish the rice out on a small plate or bowl, and ladle out the soup contents over the rice. I guarantee you will like this soup! I had not had curry nor coconut milk since I was married. My ex was 1/3 Cambodian. The Curry Soup also contained Squash, Shallots, and a vegetable that had the same texture as Sweet Potatoes. The soup is very refreshing over rice. You will like the silky smoothness of the Coconut Milk in the soup, and the Curry is not overpowering. Definitely recommended. Stir-Fry Quail Special (#67) - Small slices of Quail stir-fried with vegetables which includes Jalapeno Peppers spiced with lemon-grass. If you peruse Mitapheap's menu, you will notice that Cambodian cuisine uses Quail quite a bit more than other Southeast Asian countries. The main reason is that Quail, because of their size, is easier to cook than larger Poultry; and Quail meat is bite-sized which makes it also easy to eat. You WILL like this stir-fry! This dish, it seems, is an attempt by the restaurant to attract diners that like spicy food... but there usually is never anything spicy-hot on Cambodian menus. Warning: HOT, HOT, HOT! Ice-Milk Coffee - A variation of Iced Vietnamese Coffee. Not from a bottle... GOOD and refreshing. Notes - Notes - Notes - Rice Soup - Cambodian Cuisine's variation on Chinese Porridge. Try a Cambodian variation of Rice Soup with Fish Filet. Chow-Fun - Do not think of Cambodian Chow Fun as you would Chinese or Vietnamese Chow Fun. The restaurant places the noodles on a plate FIRST, and then tops off the noodles with the sauce or the sauteed meat and vegetables. Try dishes using Coconut Milk, Curry, or dishes that are spiced with LemonGrass (lemon flavor without the tanginess) and Tamarind (sour). These entrees will be the most distinctive if you're trying to compare Cambodian Cuisine vs Vietnamese or Chinese cuisine. Cambodian cooking is known for their use of Quail and Fish. Helpful hint - Read the menu CAREFULLY! If you like Porridge (Rice Soup), the first Rice Porridge entry is actually Blood Porridge. If you're into that kind of soup (I'm NOT), just ignore this warning. No one in the restaurant communicates adequately in English, except for the cook / owner and the daughters on evenings and weekends. If he is busy in the back, you ARE on your own as the waitress just entered the United States less than a month ago from Cambodia. Also... there is a $1 surcharge for Credit / Debit transactions. Restaurant was 25% of capacity, 100% Cambodian @ 4pm. In summary... a very authentic Cambodian restaurant. But not used to English-Speaking American customers. UPDATE 10-20-2007 ---------- Went in again today for some more authentic Cambodian! Tried their (#17) Seafood Rice Soup - Bits of Shrimp, Squid and other seafood spiced with slivers of Ginger in a Rice Porridge. Reminded me of my mom's improvised soups she used to make from Rice leftovers... she also liked to spice up soups with Ginger. Also ordered (#67) - Stir Fried Quail - REALLY HOT, and GOOD! It very simple decorations and Casual. This place is cash only and if you were to pay with card than you will be charged a dollar or more for transaction fees beside the food you paid for. Best to have cash handy when you go here. I usually ordered the number 3 seafood pho which is call kyteav in Khmer. It very good and it taste like homemade noodle. I also tried the chow fun before it was okay but I prefer the seafood noodle over the chow fun. The services was good where they checked on us often and refills our waters. Parking here is not hard since it a big shopping plaza. I will definitely will try other items when I come back to this restaurant. read more
