Shogun is one of our favorite sushi spots in Boise (and obviously many others-- always has some waiting time (which is never a problem for us, it's worth the wait)). Our party of four did the set menu & (always) loved everything -- our favorite roll is Saipan, a MUST try if you like a slither of lemon in each bite. We also had the garlic shrimp roll, baked salmon roll, & baked tiger roll, plus appetizers such as the tako salad, mussels, and jalapeño poppers. All flavorful, and satisfying. The sushi chef/owner even surprised us with some bonus appetizers: hamachi carpaccio and a special off-menu roll that had seared tuna, kani salad, and avocado. Both delightful! You won't find any cheaper options - a lot of variety (sushi, rolls, bento, hot and cold foods) - great service - nice cozy ambiance Now, I wouldn't expect the fish quality to be 10/10, but for the price, it's totally worth it. Sometimes, i just want to eat decent quality sushi without breaking the bank. I come here at least once or twice a month. For 2 people, we won't spend more than 35-40 ish bucks. I was under the impression they offered AYCE but it is not. Probably my fault for not inquiring further. You can select from a Set menu for lunch or dinner. I got Set B for lunch, two appetizers with 12 pieces of Nigiri. The gyoza was really good, I thought the jalapeño poppers were good but not the best in town. The nigiri was very fresh and delicious. I added a miso soup so the total came out to $30.20 before tip which is almost the same price for the AYCE spot in town. Great ambiance. Sufficient service, poor fish quality. They pre-cut all their protein so the fish isn't very fresh tasting. Also their imitation crab sticks aren't prepared, they're just placed directly into rolls which isn't my preference. About half of their signature rolls contains cream cheese. The fried roll I got was pretty flavorless, despite being drenched in sriracha, spicy mayo and eel sauce. I wanted to love it, but didn't. I think they could be producing better sushi with a little more effort. read more

So I would not recommend coming if you're on a tight lunch schedule since there was a slight wait for food. Our server was Leo, and he was great! Very quick to refill drinks and checked in the right amount. He also gave us dessert since we were celebrating a birthday, but nobody at our table likes mint chocolate chip ice cream. Tried Shogun Sushi twice in two days. Found it quite enjoyable, but did not do AYCE either time. We tend to find AYCE to be a lot of rice, and actually we don't tend to eat enough to make it worthwhile. We were told they didn't skimp on AYCE, and that they prepared everything the same way for non-AYCE folks as AYCE folks. So, I guess that's great for AYCE, but not for those paying individual prices. And indeed, "not skimping" simply meant that you didn't get the best if you ordered individually... Indeed, some of the dishes were wonderful (tako salad (octopus), vegetable tempura, and their non-AYCE Boise Roll.), but some of the AYCE dishes (ordered individually) reflected an AYCE feel - the spider roll had surimi instead of only soft shell crab, I guess to give it more of a crab taste. And the eel pieces were super thin... and they knew it, they gave us three pieces instead of two. The same happened with the hamachi - they gave us three pieces. (And That Was Nice of Them!) So - four stars - I'm a fan! We will be back, and maybe occasionally we will AYCE, but usually not - and they have enough compensating factors (like an extra piece on a nigiri order) to make this very satisfying. read more
