Every time I'm in San Angelo, I make my pilgrimage to Shogun on Sunset. It's practically a family tradition at this point--equal parts dinner and performance art, with fire, knives, and just enough risk to keep it exciting. Let's start with the service: consistently friendly, prompt, and eerily efficient. You sit down, and suddenly everything you didn't know you wanted appears like magic. I don't know how they do it--probably a pact with the shrimp-flipping spirits. Either way, I'm not complaining. The teppanyaki? Always on point. Tender, flavorful, and hot enough to cauterize your regrets. And the show? Somehow, no matter how many times I see it, it never feels phoned in. Every beat is hit, every egg is cracked midair with the flair of a culinary ninja, and nobody sets the building on fire--so really, it's a win for everyone. Also, shout-out to the sushi: fresh, well-rolled, and surprisingly not sad (which is saying something for inland Texas). Fairly priced too, which I deeply appreciate in this, our late capitalist hellscape. Bottom line: Shogun is reliably great. Very good hibachi grill. They use quality ingredients always. I have only had a couple sushi rolls here, but they were great as well. Sometimes the wait for a grill master can be trying, but if you get an appetizer and a drink, the wait is well worth it. Great place for families. read more

Shogun is allowing two parties to sit too close. There is only a single chair separating these two parties. At the same time, Shogun is requiring me to wait for 45 minutes to have another customer at the same grill as me to serve me. If they had sorted the smaller group in the photo to a different table I could have sat there too with multiple chair separation. I would not had to wait over 45 minutes simply to be served. Poor business decision to make a customer wait when it's not their fault there aren't more customers. Update - closer to an hour now. Another customer has arrived but been on the phone. As a food server I would have insisted the customer place an order to prevent further delay to other customers at the same grill. read more

I feel like I just burned my money. I would not recommend eating at this establishment. The owner was incredibly rude, I let her know that the rice was under cooked as it was crunchy. She then began to argue with me and walked away. The manager that was there came and asked what the problem was and he was understanding about the situation. We go two small to-go boxes of rice which was nice. But, the fact that I had to pay $30 per plate for us to leave with virtually nothing eaten off of them irritates me. This is the first and only Hibachi/Sushi restaurant that I've been to in San Angelo, but I love it. The servers are always super nice and fast. I'll start by saying the food wasn't bad whatsoever. However, the quality of service is severely lacking here. I asked for chopsticks and they were essentially thrown at me. Additionally all the sauces here are watered down which is a little disappointing. I'm a huge fan of ginger sauce and the sauce here just wasn't even close to cutting it. So this is actually my very 1st hibachi.. Being from San Francisco, we have Benihana, which is similar to Shogun. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner during my visit and I'm amazed by what the chef can do with his cooking utensils. He is really funny and down to earth which made watching him cook that much more enjoyable. We ordered the dinner for 2, which comes with chicken, shrimp, veggie, and meat with fried rice and was more than enough food for the both of us. We upgraded our meat to fillet mignon which I recommended because it was so tender. The fried rice was a tad salty for my taste, but the boyfriend enjoyed it. This place is really clean and the workers are super nice and friendly. I will come back for dinner again whenever I'm visiting my boyfriend in San Angelo again. read more

This is a terrible place ran by a rude owner who doesn't know how to talk to people. I went there once with my family had a great show then next you know we hear screaming and f bomb coming from the kitchen and our chef ended up walking out. It was very very awkward after that. I also went a second time to see if maybe things have change... they have not. This restaurant is very understaffed so it's hard to get good service which is understandable. But then the owner came out from the back to yell at her staff and again a very awkward situation as a customer. Even if you're okay with this environment the food is nothing to brag about. The fry rice has no flavor I have to drench it im sauce to make it take like something. And the chicken is nothing special. It's just grilled chicken. Stopped in on a Tuesday evening (5pm). Was greeted immediately, sat down at the table... then waited. Finally took our order.. then waited for over 30 minutes before being asked "how's everything tonight?" .. I asked about our order, and was told, "one minute & I'll go check". I had observed multiple other customers get their orders during this time, most of which had ordered after I had placed my order. The young man came back w an apology & a "complementary " appetizer.. sorry but we are really busy tonight. - he was doing all he could, but the store was being poorly managed. It looked as though it was several high school kids doing their best to run things. Needless to say, I thanked them for their effort, but the order was still not close to being prepared, so we left. This place, where do I start? I've been warned but my gosh look at all these reviews When you walk in they give you a choice of where you want to sit. We asked to be seated at the grill, but then they made us move to a regular table because we did not order from the grill menu (it did not specifically said that on the menu). When we ordered the lunch specials, they said lunch was over. Again, nowhere on the menu did it say what time lunch starts and ends. It took a while for our appetizers to come out, and the egg rolls looked like they've been swimming in the greasy oil way too long. Everything took a long time to come out, and when they did come out they tasted like the cook forgot how many times he's salted and peppered the food. But I would definitely want to work here because our server was so nonchalant about how long we've been sitting there waiting for our food. She was just sitting on the bar stool either on her phone or flipping the channels like it was her own living room. Food and service, definitely not worth the money. read more

Good food but the service is pretty terrible. First time we went, our waiter couldn't answer any questions about the food and didn't seem to understand the menu - it clearly states the teppanyaki meals come with rice, a soup and a salad, but he seemed to think the sides were all extra. Tried again last night, and sat for about twenty minutes before we even got water. Sat around for another half hour or so before we flagged down the host to say we hadn't had anyone take our order yet. He wound up taking our orders, but we didn't actually see our waitress until she brought our food. No apologies about the wait. read more

Let me start by saying that if my review was based simply on our waitress, it would receive negative 100 stars... I'll go into that later. We left the Grill after having terrible food there, and headed over to Shogun for Sushi. The place is hidden behind Academy and I couldn't wait to try it. We walked in and waited for a while to be seated... not a good sign as the place was pretty much empty. We are seated at the sushi bar and make our choices. One of my friends decides to order from the grill menu instead of sushi and we can't all wait to share. After being prepared, our sushi and soft shell crab arrive and we share with our friend that has ordered chicken from the grill. 38 minutes go by Her chicken has not arrived I get up from the sushi bar and go find the waitress to inquire where my friend's food is. She states that chicken takes longer to cook than sushi to prepare. Uhmmm are they killing and plucking the darn bird?! I ask her if she can at least go check on the order, to which she rolls her eyes and walks away with a sigh and "I go check" over her shoulder. *breathe, Shani, breathe The waitress comes out from the kitchen, gos to a table and sits down. She tells us nothing, doesn't stop by with info about the chicken... nothing. She sits at a table and goes back to talking with another member of the staff. Now, at this point, let me say that the sushi was FANTASTIC! We had the crunchy tempura roll, softshell crab, california roll and one other I can't recall. All were fabulous. Back to our dilema. A waiter walks by us, and I grab him, tell him of our situation and ask if he wouldn't mind checking on our chicken. He smiles and says of course he will. The waiter returns, telling us that the waitress forgot to even put in our order, but the kitchen staff is now cooking it. Not the guy that cooks everything at the grill, but the kitchen staff so she can cover her butt of not turning our order in. Awesome. After over an hour, we still have no chicken. I then approach our oh so lovely waitress and ask her the whereabouts of our infamous chicken. She, again, sighs and walks away. She returns this time with the plate, announcing to our party that we should order the chicken first from now on, then later the sushi since the chicken takes longer to cook. At this point I became more than just a little irritated. Really? You're going to tell me when to order my food rather than simply admit YOUR mistake?! She got no tip. The waiter who checked on the chicken and was a total doll, did. I'll be back because the sushi was excellent, but I'll ask NOT to have her as our waitstaff. read more

Being new to the San Angelo area, I didn't know what to expect from this restaurant. My friend and I went for only the sushi at the sushi bar. Coming in there was no wait (@8:30) and the host was really nice. Unlike other sushi and steak houses, it was somewhat light in the room and very clean. The chefs were great at what they did. As for the food and the sushi bar, the sushi was delicious! Ordered the tiger roll Titan, and salmon. All of it was above the standards and for very mediocre prices. As a sushi lover , I definitely recommend this place for sushi. The sushi master chatted with us for a while and was friendly which was pleasant. I am a sushi connoisseur, and started my career working 4 years at a very authentic and pricy sushi bar... so I know my fish and my sushi well! This place is not so great.. the Ahi Tower which for 15 bucks was fairly pricy but was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered a spicy salmon roll and a spicy tuna roll. Which there is more than a subtle difference between those two fishes; I was unable to tell which was which not from color, texture or flavor ( bad sign for fish quality ). The San Angelo roll was okay. The kanikama ( imitation crab ) that was on top of the roll was dry, and had lost its flavor due to it being in the open to long. Miso soup was just what you would expect of miso soup. The edamame was cooked very well and lightly salted to essentially a perfect cook. My wife and I went at an off hour; so I can't say much about the service except that it was excellent and the staff was very friendly! This is a Japanese hibachi/ sushi bar in the middle of Texas. My expectations of that were met, I don't know how their hibachi skills are but their sushi quality is okay. Out of the 2 other places in San Angelo that I've gotten sushi from Shogun is by far the best, even though that isn't saying a whole lot. read more

The food was NOT fresh! I knew we should have left when I walked in and my shoes stuck to the floor! We chose to sit at tables to not have to wait for it to me cooked by a chef. They clearly used old red meat but the taste of the beef. Then the sushi roll looks very similar to the ones I make at home- a big mess that did not stay together at all. To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of hibachi and definitely don't have high expectations to be entertained when going for lunch, but this experience was pretty low. Kudos on the onion volcano, well done. That is all. The fried rice was dry, but somehow tasted like crappy chinese takeout. The filet was cooked well enough, scallops didn't have much flavor and the shrimp were nothing special. Again, people go to Hibachi to be entertained by the flipping/tricks, etc. none of that was happening. The other grills seemed to be getting hooked up. No train whistle at ours though. The sushi was a 4, came out quickly, and was tasty. The 'wasabi' is weak, but that's just something I expect with restaurant sushi. I dropped about $150 on two rolls and two meals. We had supper there with a group of 12. We sat at one of the grills. The server was pleasant, but the guy behind the grill was not exactly overjoyed to be there. The food was okay, but the service was slow. They had no miso soup or eel sauce. The floor was very sticky and the women's restroom overflowed and ran out into the hall. I just moved to the area and was told this is the best place for sushi around. The service was actually pretty good and the sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't great. I ordered what the waiter advised me was their two most popular rolls: the San Angelo and the Texas rolls. Both were decent but they had a similar taste. Then I tried my friend's which was the Tiger Roll and I wasn't a fan. In my rolls the cream cheese and eel sauce were the overpowering tastes. In the Tiger Roll what stood out to me was the fact that the fish didn't taste very fresh. All in all it was a decent experience. But if this is the best sushi in the area I don't have much hope for the others. read more

Very hit and miss sushi. Sometimes it's a 5, other times a 3. The cost is higher then other places in town for similar rolls and they are often times very busy. I once waited 50 minutes for 3 rolls. I do think their rolls are tasty though and overall seem to have a lot of variety. The midway and San Angelo roll and pretty decent. I have not tried the Hibotchy but it looks like they do a decent job of it although it's cost is also overly expensive. Our first experience with ShoGun here in San Angelo was a take out order: 2 orders of chicken fried rice & an eel (unagi) roll. Delicious! The order even came w/soup and salad (surprise!) and everything was delicious. Our second trip there we met friends and sat at the grill. We got the lunch special for 2 (on a Sunday!) and the roll special ($10 for 2 rolls - off a list of rolls, it didn't apply to all their rolls). We were very satisfied! Unlike another hibachi grill in town I have visited, the chef at Shogun put on a show and was appropriately humorous. The food was not overly salty and the portion sizes were generous enough to merit a to-go box. The lunch special offers you all meats (steak, chicken & shrimp) & he cooks your steak to order. The place was well lit (not dark and dingy like 2 other hibachi places I have been to in town) & the bathroom was clean and stocked. Service was good and we were in and out of there in an hour! I would definitely return here for more hibachi and to try some of their other sushi options. read more

My son just moved to San Angelo, and we flew here to see him. We were invited to join a large group of his new friends. I'm thinkin' to myself, "I did not come to Texas for Japanese food!" I have experienced Teppanyaki (teppen) cooking before. It's fun, when you have a chef with a fun personality... the fun knife tricks, and comedy mixed in. "Tom" delivered that, and kept us all laughing and I was impressed with his skills. I'm just not a huge fan of this type of cooking because of all the soy sauce. The fried rice had a lot of soy. The vegetables were loaded with salty soy. I got the scallops, and they were again... loaded with lots of soy sauce. So, to me the meal was okay... but really not something I would do very often. Well, looks like I'm done with this place. Over the years the quality has declined steadily. I could justify the high prices if the food was good, but sadly, it's just not good anymore. The Yum Yum sauce has always been a unique highlight here, so I guess it still has that going for it. I could delve into the numerous bad experiences I've had here, but I'm going to focus on the one today. I called in a very basic sushi order to go (spicy salmon roll), picked it up, ate one piece, and just threw the rest in the trash. It was the opposite of fresh. The presentation wasn't encouraging, because it didn't even look like it was cut with a sharp knife. The salmon tasted old and the cucumber inside the roll was starting to brown. Yuck. If you want sushi or a Japanese grill, go to Bonsai Garden. I've had food poisoning from there several times over the last decade and I'd still choose them over this place any day. read more

Don't come here if you don't have 1 1/2 hours literally no matter what time of day- lunch , mid afternoon , dinner, weekday, weeknight. They usually only hav one server for the entire restaurant. On occasion a second server behind the bar who will hit or miss help out. We called ahead to let them know we had a large party coming at a designated time. Took over ONE HOUR before they even served soup and salad - and well into an hour fifteen minutes before they started cooking our food. He didn't over do the "show" aspect with huge flames and all that due to my three old. But the server, very slow, not work oriented. More concerned with his phone then the actual customers. After having our fourth Valentine's dinner at Shogun, we once again left more than satisfied. My husband and I agree that Shogun has by far the best sushi, and teppanyaki we have ever tried. The sushi is always so fresh and everything is always cooked perfectly. The owner and staff are amazing! Even if we didn't always have a great meal (which has never happened) I think we would go back for the service alone. Whether it's a full house on a Saturday night or a slow Monday, our waiter is always on point. Shogun is perfect for a date night, dinner with the whole family, or just to go have a cold one and a good conversation with Kay (the owner). As far as the quality of the food, service, and overall experience, Shogun is money well spent. read more

This place is a travesty plain and simple. Every time I come here I for some reason think it will be different but I always leave disappointed. This is the first 1 star I've ever given on YELP but I cannot continuously take floors so greasy I almost slip, overpriced Hibachi and exceptionally terrible service. Last straw was walking in at 9:20, telling the host we had two more right behind us and being given an agitated sigh. I politely asked if that was ok and he told me "I guess". Living on the east coast exploring the sushi was probably the best, fresh fish more competition cheaper the rolls. Traveling back to Texas was a struggle to find great sushi. Let me tell you the father you are away from the ocean the crappier the fish. Salmon should be pinkish red not orange (learned that from my Japanese friends) and let me tell you! It's fatty melt in your mouth fishy goodness. Out of West Texas. The drive to Abilene TX is worth your money and time to hit up Tokyo Fusion the most amazing fresh fish you will find. Not to mention their staff is excellent. This sushi place in Angelo (Shogun) has the highest reviews but I'm sure it's problem not the sushi bar that's a big hit, they rob you of your money by giving you thinest see threw sashimi. Not to mention it takes them an hour just to de-thaw the fish and forget to read your whole order, the staff needs to learn good hygiene. I'm giving them 2 Stars For 1. Great presentation on the Eel roll and the taste 2. They where attentive of your glass. Please do not go there for the sushi. It's socks and it's poorly made. read more
