This just brought tears to my eyes!!! When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s my Dad and I would go there at least twice a month. I would get 2 chili cheese dogs and a full order of chili cheese fries with no onions and a root beer. Miss you guys more than any other restaurant I have ever eaten at. Bacon Swiss Burger has taken 30 min to cook. All I hear is good things about this place and then receive extremely subpar service.

We've been here a couple years ago and the burgers were horrible. Since I work across the street I decided to try it again, maybe it's changed, cuz there's not too many options right here on this block. Today I went and got a BLT and fries and a drink, pretty basic, and it was actually really good. Their prices are very reasonably priced. Not too expensive. It's a hole-in-the-wall place. Theres seating outdoors and where you order is an enclosed patio. So if you're looking for a greasy spoon place, this is one place to check out here in Placerville, the other one is Tom's on Placerville drive.(we like their burgers better) read more

Great burgers! I can't seem to want to try anything else to be able to evaluate. The only issue is that it seems the fries are hit and miss. Sometimes they're good, but lately it seems that the oil might be old so they have a funny taste. Otherwise, I definitely recommend it. I've been twice in the last two weeks. read more

I was craving a burger. Not just any burger but a hole in the wall burger joint. The family and I were in our way home from South Lake Tahoe and decided to seek out a a joke in the wall burger joint. Thankfully for Yelp, we found shoe string. Such a hole in the wall. No air conditioning areas at all. That shouldn't stop this journey right? We walked into the covered porch area. We were greeted by a nice fellow Dodgers fan who was taking our order. She was super nice. The burger I ordered was great. There chili cheese fries are awesome. This place is a gem, right off the freeway and amazing food at a great price. The Western BLT sandwich was the best blt I've ever had. The Reuben fries are amazing and generous portions. This review has been in the works, in my head, for .. years. It wasn't until a recent stop here that I realized, again, that I hadn't written about it. There's something about roadside food stands. It's an interesting yellow structure/building that has obviously been added on to over the years. Like others have said, don't let the looks of this place deter you from stopping. Shoestring has been in this location for a long long time; same family, I believe. They're doing it right. Order at the window and eat at one of only a few outdoor picnic tables. Time reference is a little different the farther up the hill you go. Don't be in a hurry, this isn't McFastFood. I've had most everything on the menu at some point but my 'go to' would be the standard hamburger and the pastrami. Side of fries, of course... the small is plenty. They have dogs of different toppings and fairly sure they still have chicken type sandwiches. Drinks ... sadly, that's where I've fallen short. Pull off Hwy50 at Schnell School Rd and a right on Broadway. Don't go Main St unless you've got other business there or like the drive through town. read more

On December 22, 2020 My car got a flat in Placerville. I live three hours away and while my tire was being repaired ( I had to wait 2 hours, no big deal ) I was very hungry and walked up the road to find some food. After being rudely rejected by McDonalds on Broadway because I was on foot and could not go through the drive thru I walked further and found Shoestring. First off they were Covid compliant with masks on and very nice with great attitude and customer service. I ordered a chili dog, burger and fries and the food was great. My boyfriend and I were on our way home from Tahoe, feeling tired, hot, hungry and looking to eat something other than In-N-Out. We decided to trust the Yelp mobile app's recommendation of The Shoestring, and Yelp DEFINITELY came through! This place is a hole in the wall, only outdoor seating but it is shaded (downside- lots of flies). You order at a little window and they call out your order when its ready. After reading some reviews we got the chili cheese fries, we definitely should have ordered the small size as opposed to the regular because the portion was B.I.G... lesson learned. I got the pastrami and swiss sandwich which was also a hefty portion and it was excellent, far surpassed my expectations. My boyfriend got a jalapeño cheeseburger. He was pleased with the burger, and we both were happy to avoid the inevitable In-N-Out pit stop on this trip. We went here on a whim, and I am glad we did. It's a basic set up, with all seating under a covered patio, and a walk up window to order. They have a TON of choices, from chicken to burgers to sandwiches to hot dogs. We opted for two chili dogs and a fry to share. It was a Saturday at lunch and they were busy - we showed up just at the right time to snag a table, as they only have 4 or so tables. It took about 5 minutes to get our food. They just use paper to wrap the food in - no plates or even cardboard cafeteria boats- it made the chili dogs really difficult to eat, but they were delicious anyway. I'm really disappointed that it took me almost two years of living here to try this place! It was exactly what you would hope for in a little roadside burger joint. I called ahead to place my order and bring back to work. I tried the western burger, it came with a thick, crispy onion ring, crispy bacon, bbq sauce, and cheese. The burgers come with shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, and mustard too. I also ordered the regular sized fries and they're plenty to share for 2-3 people. I also got an oreo milkshake and it was probably one of the best Oreo milkshakes I've ever had. The last sip I had to remove the lid so that I could enjoy about a whole quarter of an oreo cookie! My only complaint was that I ordered a medium instead of large! Also, when I arrived to pick up, the lady at the counter had the most friendliest energy I have seen in this crazy and saddening time! This is a classic Americana Burger/ hot dog stand at it's best. The type where you place your order through a sliding window at the counter. I went with a basic cheeseburger and fry combo, but noticed that everyone eating around me and that ordered after me went with hot dogs. The hot dogs and especially the chili dogs seem to be the specialty here. None the less, the burger was very good and had the true taste of a classic burger stand. Take a look at the pictures of the burger as they will speak for themselves. Obviously the two most important things about a burger are the meat and the bun. In the case the meat had a great flavor and was perfectly cooked while the toasted sesame seed bun made a nice finishing touch. One additional upside to this place for me was the small soft ice in the drinks. You do not see this type of ice very many places and it's an added bonus in my book. The only downside I saw to this place is that the seating is extremely limited. There are four, maybe five picnic tables in the front and couple in the back and during the weekend lunch hour a seat was very hard to come by. I will definitely give this place another shot and maybe next time I will try the hot dogs that seem to be so popular. read more

BURGER REVIEW: Thanks to yelp and our openness not to go to In-n-Out, we had the best burgers EVER. I had the bacon cheese and every inch of the bun was covered with goodies (pickles, sauce, meat, etc.) My hubby had the pastrami burger and loved it too. He's a great cook so if he "loves" something you better believe it is damn good. Their chili cheese fries were also delicious, no cheeze wiz on top, real shredded cheddar. Love it! The only reason I took a star off is that they don't have bathrooms so we had to go to the golden arches down the street. But that's understandable for a small shack and we will definitely be back when we head that way. read more

I hadn't been here in years. On our way to go golfing we decided to stop in and give it a try. I'm ashamed to say I forgot to take pictures, because the portions size were huge. Food: 5/5 Chili cheese hot dog- It doesn't get much better than this a 10inch wiener covered in delicious chili, cheese and onion. The bun was freshly steamed and perfect soft, it was not match for the chili and quickly got soggy. No need to worry, that's what plastic forks were precisely designed for. Chili cheese fries- HUGE portion! Not only was it the size of a medium sized infant, but it also tasted fantastic! French fries were fresh and crispy. Their chili is fantastic. The don't skimp on the cheese either. Root beer Freeze- There is an age old argument about what is the best thing to wash down chili cheese dogs and chili cheese fries with. Fortunate for you, I have the answer, it's the root beer freeze and theirs is perfect, not soupy and thin nor concrete thick where you give yourself a brain aneurism trying to suck it through the straw. It's perfect. Service- 4/5 It's small town, small business kind of place. They are really nice and want to be sure that you are completely satisfied with your meal. The only thing I can complain about here is the wait, but for fresh, made to order food and a line of people ahead of me, not too bad. Also, a little pricey, but again, for fresh, made to order food, it's not a terrible trade off. I had the pastrami burger, which was excellent. The bun was perfectly toasted, the pastrami was seasoned and cooked wonderfully and the marriage of the two is a match made in carnivore heaven! Fries and a soda made this meal a perfect afternoon lunch. In addition, when I picked up my fries, they were extra crispy, which just so happens to be how I like them and the lady behind the counter offered me a new, not so crispy order without question. Listen, nobody wants to eat a Hot Dog that is mushy and soggy because you are now questioning whether or not a local stray Chihuahua made it to the meat grinder. These Hot Dogs actually crunch and pop with flavor as you bite into them. Don't even get me started on their milkshakes. These milkshakes are thick and burst with refreshing flavor, and if you are lactose intolerant you may want to communicate to your friends or significant other that they are risking a free pass to the afterlife if they remain close to you! If you are wanting to eat a great Hamburger and Hot Dog and you are throwing caution to the wind in regards to your cholesterol level you want to eat here! The absolute BEST place in the area for miles to get awesome American food. I love Carl's Jr.'s double Western Bacon Cheeseburger, but The Shoestsrintg's Double western cheeseburger way surpasses Carl's Jr., it's like Shoestring's is the original creator of it. In-n-out is my other favorite, but If things work out, I will go here. my other favorite burger is the pastrami cheese burger. The chili cheese fries are also very good, but beware they are very hard to eat by your self, they are so big you will have to share. Milkshakes are also good and very huge. I wouldn't change much anything, just hard to enjoy when there's bad weather, just have to take it out. The only other thing I would change is add restrooms.
