The restaurant has dirty walls, the chairs are uncomfortable and the service was lack luster considering she had just begun her shift on late Saturday afternoon. The three of us ordered the "rib eye" chicken fried steak senior lunch meal with mashed potatoes and salad. The only thing good was the salad and our drink order. The steak was tough, rubbery & had too much gristle for my MNL to even finish eating it. I asked for gravy on the side and my lunch arrived with gravy smothered on everything; so it went back. When the server was told the lunch was actually disgusting, she didn't apologize for the cooks not doing their job nor asked if we wanted to speak to the manager. When my husband went to pay the check, the manager was doing the cash register and my husband conveyed to him that the food (except for the salad) was not up to par and we wouldn't be back. That manager couldn't care less...didn't offer a discount on the ticket nor to comp the meals for something else to redeem themselves for a return visit! Save a trip and go directly to Mel's Diner across the street for a much better food experience and server cheerfulness. The interior feels like walking into someone's home that's crowded and filled with knicks knacks and antiques. The staff is welcoming and attentive. Plus the menu is pretty extensive, so many choices... pretty much classic American diner food. Plus they have home made pies, strudel, and cinnamon rolls. They have four kinds of strudel and 11 types of pies. To name a few pie flavors ... apple, blackberry, pecan, lemon meringue, banana cream. Yum. On my last visit as I was perusing the menu, the ribeye chicken fried steak caught my attention. I've never had a ribeye version, so I ordered that. The ribeye cube steak was pounded to the thinnest, barely there thickness. It was a tad overcooked rendering the bread crust a bit dry. Even the gravy couldn't soften it up. Hubs ordered the bacon wrapped fried hotdog and cup of minestrone soup. I sampled off his plate. Both were ok. The fried batter around the hotdog was crunchy hard and dry. Buttercup is a solid breakfast option in the area. I've been here twice with a large party and both times the service was impressively efficient and everyone was very patient. I love walking in to a great display of pies and breads. However, I never had a chance to try either since their breakfast portions are massive. I really enjoy their California benedit (no bacon) and hashbrowns. The benedict sauce is delicious and the avocado slices are huge! The hashbrowns are perfectly crisped and flavored with oil (the way a good diner hashbrown should be!). It is very easy to have leftovers here, which makes the price well worth it. My family and I went to Tahoe so on our way back we stopped in Placerville. We decided to try this place. The restaurant feels like you are walking into an old fashioned diner. The food was not really what I was expecting. I was thinking of authentic comfort diner food. But it definitely didn't reach that expectation. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak dinner with minestrone soup, French fries, and the bread basket. The Minestrone soup was good and warm. The Chicken Fried Steak was overcooked and the gravy on top was ok. The fries were good and so was the bread basket. This meal was definitely not worth the price. The Corned Beef Reuben was really good. The potato salad on the side was yummy and paired nicely with the sandwiches. The Chicken Parmesan dinner was ok. The Fettuccine Alfredo was bland. The chicken felt like it had too much flour. The Monte Cristo was delicious. It paired beautifully with the raspberry jam. The jam really brought all the flavors together in a flavorful way. Came across this diner style like restaurant in old town Placerville. I love all the vintage decor they have in there. There's a lot to look at and admire, from the entrance to the seating area, it's all over. Our server was amazing. I believe her name is Kylie, she has black hair and it was in a long French braid. The food was okay. We ordered the seafood platter and the buttercup original ribeye country chicken fried steak and eggs (interestingly called chicken fried steak when there's no chicken). The seafood platter had fried fish, clams, calamari, and shrimps. The fried fish was perfectly fried, everything else was over fried or the oil wasn't good. The country fried steak was over fried and a bit dry, almost tasted like jerky ): the over easy eggs and the country potatoes were good. Their cornbread and blueberry lemon glazed bread were also on the dry side. They have a pretty big menu and the food options come with good variety of sides to choose from. This place is absolutely adorable! The antique decorations give this restaurant a Time Machine kind of vibe. Our waitress was super sweet and very attentive. We stopped here on our way back from a backpacking trip so we were hungry! The menu was huge! Classics diner style. I opted for a cheese omelet with hash browns and a side of strawberry pancakes. It was delicious! Real cheddar cheese in the omelette. The strawberries were fresh cut and delicious. My husband got the chicken avocado melt with fries and I had a bite. The sourdough bread was thick and the perfect texture. Such a yummy sandwich! The fries were good but not the best, hence why I took one star away. They were not crispy enough for my taste. Our friends got burgers and said they were delicious! I want to come back and try the giant cinnamon rolls. Highly recommend this restaurant for good old fashioned stick to your ribs cooking. Food was awful. Paid $21.00 for a burger and it came with no sauce or anything. So dry that I'm worried my dog will choke on it. The bun had lettuce, onion, tomato and a small square of unmelted cheese. She forgot my soup, so i reminded her and she was very sweet about it, but she brought it and it was barely luke warm. The soup splashed out on the little plate under it which held a cracker, so when I picked the cracker up, the paper on the cracker was wet and got all over my hand. When ordering my burger I asked for an extra patty. I was charged $6.99 for it!! I asked the manager about that price and he said it wasn't correct. It was supposed to be $3.99! Very busy place on a weekend morning. The parking could be a challenge. Love the old fashioned decor! You can easily kill time waiting for your table. My skillet was huge but just okay (and the fact it came in a fake skillet was such a disappointment...has to be a cast iron skillet)! The side pancakes are fluffy and tasty. I lived in the area since about 1986 and I'm going to the Buttercup pantry that whole time. They always had really good food. Recently I noticed it's under new management. I've been there twice now since the new manager took over and the food has gone down dramatically. Tonight I had a open face, turkey sandwich, mashed potatoes, and a salad. In the old days the salad was excellent with a lot of extras in it not so much anymore. Tonight, my turkey sandwich was like shoe leather and I'm not kidding. In fact I couldn't even eat it. Mashed potatoes were OK. Couple of weeks ago. I went there for a French dip. Same thing the roast beef inside the French dip was like shoe leather. Unfortunately I'm gonna cross Buttercup pantry off my list for a good home-cooked meal and that makes me very sad. read more

Summary: A gem of a place. Great service, solid food, and excellent value for the price. It's fun and eclectic inside, with LOTS to look at. Parking is a little tricky if you have a big car, but there is a decent amount of parking at the adjacent lot. Highly recommend the B.L.A.S.T. sandwich. My wife and I have been coming here for many years with her family as a stopping point either to or returning from Lake Tahoe. It makes a great place for breakfast/brunch/lunch and has a large menu with an abundance of options. Everything seems to be made in-house (including the daily soups and pies), and we have yet to order anything that wasn't delicious. The staff are friendly and attentive, being very helpful and doing an excellent job fielding requests from our large party. The menu items are pretty reasonably priced, and large portioned. Most average in the mid teens, but some extend into the $25+ range for seafood plates. They also usually come with choice of fries, soup, or salad (for non-breakfast options). Breakfast options come with toast/bread/muffin and sausage. The food is not fancy, but it is well executed and tasty, which makes for a very consistent and pleasant experience year after year. This was our first time at Buttercup pantry and we were so happy that on the way out we were talking about coming back again to Placerville just to have lunch here. They have a really nice menu for breakfast and lunch/dinner. The parking lot is a little tight, but everybody seems to be OK with that. I had the turkey sandwich on a croissant which was as big as a bears paw! Our boy had grilled ham and cheese and Hubs decided he was going all out and got the triple decker hamburger. That thing was enormous! Even he said "Oh no!" when it came to the table. We all enjoyed every bite and we tried the Apple Dumpling for dessert. This is shareable. Actually, everything we had was shareable. But this dumpling, well, they take a whole apple, spiral cut it, coat it with the right amount of cinnamon/sugar so it's not hot and not overly sweet and then wrap it in flaky pastry and bake it. I was full and still ate that wonderful bit of heaven on earth. So I gained 2 pounds. I'll lose it. But don't let that put you off from trying something from their easy to read, well represented menu. We came here in 2022. It was great then. Today was terrible. We should have expected it once we saw the Help Wanted sign on the window upon entering. I had the Extravaganza Omelet with fruit and toast. They ran out of avocado so I added tomatoes and it came with 6 sliced tomatoes on the side. The omelet had no flavor and loaded with sour cream. Silverware was dirty and my partner ordered the skillet that was literally hash browns some veggies and topped with 3 eggs. The waitress knew my order was messed up and served it anyway. At 17.99 you would think they would pride on portion and understanding of how to put together an American Breakfast. I filled on fruit had 1 tomato and half my terrible omelet and didn't touch the toast. Got a Cinnabon to go. We feel like this breakfast cost a lot and didn't not receive good service nor food. Sad. I ordered the Philly cheese steak with no mushrooms and it came out exactly as I ordered it. The steak in my sandwich could've used a little more salt but I added it at the table. Cheapest place to buy gas east of Sacramento. June, 2022, height of the gas price surge. Gas was selling for $6.75 a gallon minimum in South Lake Tahoe, and Echo summit was closed to a single lane, one direction traffic, alternating each 30 minutes. We were driving on fumes into Placerville. Gas station Fuel 4 Less in Placerville was selling gas for $5.99 a gallon, matching Costco in El Dorado Hills. Down the street was Buttercup Pantry. Exceptional ambiance, 1920s yellow Graham Brothers Truck on display on the outside. Signs greeting you say, "Hippies use Back door", "10 cents to use bathroom", among others. Signs from the past everywhere. Wife ordered the $18 California shrimp scramble, while I asked for the dish to be upgraded with pancakes for $2 more. The shrimp scramble was decent, two egg omelet, green onions, tomatoes, shrimp, diced white potatoes, and pico de gallo on the side. My two pancakes were delicious. When we got the bill, the pancakes were a separate order of $9. Waitress said sorry, and we left it as that. Snookered again! Paid $8 less to fill up the tank in Placerville than in South Lake Tahoe, savings eaten up by the $9 pancakes. I am certain that the 1920s yellow Graham Brothers Truck was disabled, as the Central Valley is the car thief capital of the country. Amazed that nobody stole the wheels. read more

My friend got the biscuits and gravy with beef patties and red potatoes. So for my selection, ehhh not the biggest fan. The hollandaise sauce on the Benedict was sweet. It was throwing the flavor off a lot. And the corned beef underneath was not at all seasoned ... also my hash-browns were not crispy AT ALL. Now my friends dish was delicious. Super crispy potatoes and the gravy sauce was super yummy. Plus the biscuits seemed homemade and not a store bought dough. Super good !! Our waitress was very sweet and attentive despite how hectic the rush was, and my coffee was HOT each refill which was super appreciated. When leaving me and my friend kept checking out all the delicious baked goods and they looked HEAVENLY. First timer at Buttercup Pantry Resturant, and wow what an experience! The owners Tony & Sammi are so attentive to each guest/staff...it really shows that they're in the business of people. Felt welcome and cared for from the moment I came in the door! I didn't know what to order and was given great recommendations but decided to go with one of their most popular chicken, bacon, avocado melt sandwich with fries and a Coke Zero on the side! I loved the flavor and quality of the meat/produce definitely a perfect balance of both and such a great added touch with the Parmesan crusted bread...totally hits the spot! We were in town reading up to Apple Hill and stopped here lunch on the way out. From the old car on the corner announcing the restaurant, to the wall decor and teapots this place is like a museum. But when it comes to the food it's all about the art of cooking. We ordered: Chicken Bacon Avocado Melt, Asian Chicken Salad and Butterfly Tempura Prawns (I subbed in the Vegetable Soup). Entered the restaurant and though there were two waitresses near the front I was not greeted or acknowledged. I was the only one waiting. Finally after 3 minutes someone come to seat me. The pancakes were a little dry and the amount of syrup could fill a thimble. Maybe a little more since I'm paying for it? When I went up front to pay, two young women were there. They looked so tired and again, no greeting. Maybe in Placerville greeting is outlawed? It was only 830 am and half filled. I paid and left a decent tip but next time I'll try Mel's Diner next door.
