We stumbled by this place while charging our car in the way to South Lake Tahoe. We ordered catfish, cod, shrimp, oysters that came with chips and $2.50 substitution for zucchini vs chips. The food was fried perfectly without oily residue. It was crunchy, soft inside, and delicious. The price was cheap compared to South Bay pricing. A meal of 1 piece of catfish (the size was huge) with 4 prawns and chips was only $15.99. Added 1 side of 5 pieces of prawns and 1 side of 5 pieces of oysters for only $15 additional. Sometimes first impressions aren't everything, I always get the cod, I've been here 1 million times at this point and it's perfectly fried nine times out of 10. Fries too. The outside of the fish is light and crispy, the inside is juicy and fresh. I do wish they made their french fries in house, but it's really not the highlight of the meal, The fried Pollock is extremely good as well, if you want to impress someone but you don't need anything fancy, little Mom and Pop shop that has really good fried fish? Best fish n chips I've had in a long time! The fish was super fresh and crispy and so was the calamari strips and popcorn shrimp. Tried the fried zucchini also and it was equally as good. The batter was coated perfectly to achieve that yummy crispiness with the perfect crunch that you can actually hear! This was an unexpected stop for us. Driving back from Tahoe, we got hungry and looked on Yelp for a quick bite to eat that wasn't fast food. Fish and chips sounded really good, so we decided to give this place a try due to the good reviews on Yelp. This is a small place with maybe 10 tables inside and a couple outside. It looks run by the owners - I only saw two people working and basically doing everything that needed to be done in the restaurant, from taking orders, cooking, serving, refilling the ice machine and putting out utensils and napkins. Super nice people and clearly very busy! My wife had the basic fish and chips whereas I had the combo fish/oyster and chips. The food was served with ketchup and tartar sauce. It would have been nice to have a lemon available. The fish was wonderful and the fries needed lots of salt. The oysters were just ok. About half were really small and covered in thick batter, making them appear larger than they really were. And then the thick batter itself made it hard to bite into. Overall a pretty good place - I just will avoid the oysters and stick with the fish. For my first time, really a 3.5 star experience, but rounding up to 4 stars because I will come back for the fish! read more

7/14/2023: I inhaled oysters & scallops this visit. As always, the restaurant's tables were full . . . Meanwhile, the outside temperature was escalating into the upper 88°F equating, the kitchen temperature must have been around 105°F! Fifteen minutes later, my order arrived: 1. Summary: Owner super nice, fish and chips, and coconut shrimp are amazingggg After exploring apple hill we wanted food, but not barbecue. Apple hill is great but when it comes to food options it can be a bit lacking in variety so on our way out we stopped by placerville at London Best Fish & Chip after seeing its high rating on Yelp. It's in a shopping center so free parking in the lot is readily available. We walked in and looked at the menu and said we wanted fish and chips and coconut shrimp. The owner kindly explained the varieties of fish and chips, cod and pollock, the pollock being thinner and crispier and the cod being thicker and therefore moister. I opted for the pollock. For dining in, they don't allow it if you have outside food. We had a lemonade from apple hill so we decided to sit outside on the shaded tables. We probably could have asked if it was ok to dine inside with the lemonade, but it was a nice day so we decided to sit outside anyway. The owner brings the food out to you, even if you sit outside, which is very nice. The food came fresh out the fryer! It was so hot and I'm sensitive to heat so I had to let it cool off for at least 10-20 mins before I could eat it. I snacked on the fries in the mean time, and if I'm being honest they were very standard fries, just salt for seasoning. But man, the fish was the best fish of fish and chips I've ever had. The breading was nice and thin so it was crunchy and not at all soggy. The fish was perfectly buttery and smooth and tasted fresh. The coconut shrimp, also amazing, perfectly crunchy. We had leftovers since we had been eating off and on all day, so we asked for boxes and took some home. Later for dinner we popped our leftovers in our air fryer for about 4-5 minutes and everything was back to crispy and yummy so if you have leftovers and an air fryer definitely do try. After reading the great first person reviews on Yelp we visited here on an early Saturday afternoon with snow falling outside. As expected, not super busy at this time of day so no wait to order. They are located in a small strip shopping center off of Broadway on the east end of downtown Placerville. No frills but nicely decorated with a seafaring motif, plenty of tables and very clean. Yes, I checked the unisex restroom and it was also spotless. The owner gave me a friendly greeting (ahoy) and took my order. He very nicely let me know of a slight up charge for my customizing my order with a different fish. No surprises here - thank you! Sweetie and I enjoyed fresh and hot cod platters with the addition of shrimp on one and oysters on the other. Also shared a side of coleslaw and hush puppies. Nice crisp batter with no greasiness that is so common. I loved that the batter stayed put for every bite. I'm from the South and VERY picky about my coleslaw and puppies and both of these were excellent. The coarsely chopped slaw was nicely sweet with a hint of mustard. The yellow cornmeal Puppies were nicely brown on the outside and pleasingly soft inside. Major Yum Factor here. Shrimp were meaty and cooked perfectly and tasted to me like Gulf Coast shrimp. I LOVE oysters any way you want to fix them and these were nicely battered and plump oysters. Anyone who likes oysters knows they are fickle and these were slightly strong in flavor. That's oysters for you. In case you're wondering, yes, I would order them again. Fries (chips to you Brits) were good and not overcooked. Included with our order was catsup, sweet tartar sauce, mild cocktail sauce and malt vinegar - nothing amiss. This was our first time visiting the restaurant, and I had read several reviews mentioning service issues. From what I gathered, the restaurant seems to be run by a husband and wife in their 50s or 60s. However, I didn't notice anything wrong during our visit. In fact, the husband was very kind and guided us in choosing the right meals, while his wife was busy cooking in the back. They make a great team and run their small business exceptionally well. Most of the time, we came too late, and the restaurant has already closed early. But this time, we came earlier. We both ordered the cod meal with shrimp. The cod was incredibly fresh and didn't fall apart at all. The first bite had a delicious garlic butter flavor. The shrimp were a decent size and very tasty. I love fish and chips, and not all restaurants get it right, but this one does. I think they make the best fish and chips I've had so far. The fish was perfectly fried in a light crispy batter, the cod tasted like the fish was caught earlier in the day and the fries were the kind I love which must be ... perfectly crisp on outside, not greasy, salty but not tooooo salty, and actually seemed like it was recently a real potato. I only have one complaint and that is the portions were too generous. I took my leftovers home since I only ate one. My nephew was visiting and he ate that within 40 seconds. He also liked it so much that the next day he went home the highway 50 route so he could eat something too and yep, you guessed it, get another chance at that delightful fish and chips place. There are not a lot of top dining choices in Placerville but London Best seemed like a winner. On the main drag and close to our hotel it was an easy decision for dinner. They close early so be careful. Items are made to order so the wait can be significant but the fish, clams and oysters we picked tasted fresh as did the hush puppies. The fries, however were not as crispy as they could have been and the breading was a little thick on the clams. Prices are fair and portions are sizable.
