WARNING - THE NEW ADDRESS IS 1623 WEST BROAD STREET, RICHMOND. AS OF THIS REVIEW, THE ADDRESS ON YELP IS INCORRECT. Small batch denim which is made as well or better than any denim I've ever owned. If you're a "denim head" you'll appreciate the detail that goes into their products. From quality, Japanese denim, to lined back pockets, to leather pads in the rivets for ease of removing the rivets without damaging the denim if a repair is ever needed. BTW, FREE LIFETIME REPAIR on all their denim products! They'll gladly hem the jeans to change the inseam if you prefer something more custom for you. I drove over 90 minutes to visit the store and it was time well spent. (Glad my SO found the correct address and hours before I made the trip.) If you're into selvedge denim, I'd recommend giving Shockoe a try. With their repair policy, it just might be the last pair of jeans you purchase for many, many years--unless you're like me and can't resist buying "just one more pair." read more

I have been intrigued by raw selvedge jeans since I first learned about them at this store FKA Shockoe Denim. I also loved the idea that my jeans would be custome made in my hometown. I'm sure plenty of people reading this understand that RVA pride :) Anyway, my mom noticed and bought me and my brother a gift certificate for $250 to cover a pair of jeans for Christmas. It took about a year for me to go back in to get my custom jeans (they used to offer completely custom jeans.. you pick the fabric, fittings, etc.) and when I did I came armed with an email and receipt attached (they didn't actually have "gift certificates" but had agreed to do this for my mom. The only person there at the time, who identified himself as the owner's (or head tailor's?) son took a look at it, accepted it, and started their process. That process was essentially to take some basic measurements, give me a pair to try on, and then they'd make adjustments and I'd come back later to pick up my new awesome jeans. He took my email address to contact me when they were ready and also took the email+reciept... You may have guessed where this was going. No email... ever. I called and left voicemails. Never got a callback. I was in school in RVA at the beginning of this process and had moved to DC once I graduated so with everything that I had going on I lost interest in fighting this battle with them. I am remembering it now because I was just Googling trying to find another company that would offer the same, raw tailored jeans made in RVA, because I obviously wasn't going to give them a second $250 but their name kept coming up... Seemed like a sign to tell this story. Tl;DR: They make nice jeans from what I hear, but if you do buy from them do not pay in full until you have your jeans in-hand. p.s. My brother did actually get his jeans and they even altered them for him later... Go figure. read more

I want to start by stating that I love my jeans. I love the cut and the fit and they look and feel good. That definetly will differ from person to person but I am satisfied in that department. The thing that keeps me from rating my experience 5 Stars is ordering my denims. I wanted to order online and pick them up in person but I did not see that option. I felt like I had to order them quickly because the jeans I wanted had some sizes that were sold out and I really wanted to buy my size and pick them up the next time I was in Richmond. That is when I discovered there was no pick-up option. I ended up contacting the company by email and received no response. After a follow-up a few days later I was sent an invoice to buy the jeans but trying to pay through Paypal I was still asked to pay for shipping. A kink. In the end, I bought the jeans, they were shipped to my place and I am satisfied with the product. The next time I will just stop-by when I am in the Cap City and make my purchase like that. read more

In regards to jeans, it should be noted that here you'll get raw selvedge denim here (for the most part). They do have in-house washes if you don't want to wait for a natural break-in. I was reading the complaint in the "one star" review. It seems he bought a heavier fabric weight than he should have. Heavy weight selvedge can be stiff as a board, and that takes daily wear and a couple of rinses for a year to break-in. At the end there's great reward in a jean that's one of a kind. The moral of the story is, next time go with lighter weight and it won't take nearly as long to break in. Option 2 is to fork out extra for a pair that has already been washed/sanded/broken-in. Lastly, selvedge lines are a point of pride. If you have 'em, show 'em. These jeans are far cooler and unique than any Nudie, 7 for All Mankind, GStar, etc. They'll last longer too. On to the clothes, I have found them to be of exceptional quality and style. A great balance of style that falls between hip and refined. I like it, as I have no desire to be over polished, but definitely not lumberjack chic. Denim - Highest quality selvedge denim. Great tight stitching detail, which translates into durability. Lifetime repairs on denim. Shirts - I have found them to have some fine fabrics and fits. They always seem to compliment the denim offering perfectly. Tailored jackets - Great fabrics (Loro Piana or unique Japanese Indigo) and unique designs. Consistently better than most designers put out. I find the pricing totally acceptable given what you get here. At Shockoe Atelier you're getting unique small production pieces either made on-site or in Italy. I'll take that over what you can get at the department store any day. In sum - great products by great people. Wish them continued success. read more

Poor quality for what you pay compared to other stores. I was intrigued by the idea of a pair of pants that lasts 5 years with an excellent fit and bought a pair for around $250. If you're certain you want raw denim jeans, get them for $135-195 at Need Supply or various other places instead. I was told that after 6 months they would be broken in and have an excellent fit. Well, I wore them for over 12 months and followed the instructions with precision, yet they are still very stiff and thick. I can pick them up by the waist with one hand and they form a firm circle like a hula hoop without sagging. They feel waxy, and the calves are way too skinny and get skinnier as they go down. They don't look good on me and while I believed they did when I tried them on, others with better fashion sense have confided they don't. And, they have faded and worn the same amount as regular jeans from Target, so there goes the claim of long-lasting. There was also a very pretentious attitude. I was instructed no fewer than 4 times between 2 people to make sure to roll the cuff so everyone could see the stripe and know they're super expensive pants. And you get (not kidding) a jeans diary to fill in with all the amazing things that happen to you while wearing your pants. They do help you choose the right color, fabrics, measurements, etc., but what mid-grade or higher retail store doesn't these days. Note there are absolutely zero refunds or exchanges at all...ever. Pretty sad when chains like Macy's and Nordstrom have better customer service than one of the most high-end local stores in town. Bottom line...I want to support local businesses but you have to give me a reason besides happening to live in the same city as me. Offer some unique benefit. The jeans are way, way overpriced compared to getting a matching pair in a different store. So buy a pair if you're a pretentious hipster who needs to impress others, but don't fool yourself into believing you're getting good value and quality for your money compared to the numerous alternatives. read more

Shockoe Denim is the very best clothing experience to be had in Richmond, and probably the whole Mid-Atlantic. If you are at all interested in having an incredible pair of jeans then Shockoe Denim is the place for you. It is family run and a totally different experience than one would assume shopping for high end jeans would be. I had some custom jeans made up and outside of the fact that the jeans are just gorgeous the experience of trying on and custom fitting was par excellence. Never mind the gorgeous industrial chic of the store itself and the visible factory in the back! Not only did I have my jeans measured in store, they were actually MADE IN STORE! As a new NYC transplant to Richmond, VA this is remarkable. These jeans cost less than their nearest comparable competitor, are as nice or nicer, and are made right in store. While many may find paying $200-300 for a pair of jeans as crazy, for something that you'll wear hundreds of times over a period of years it is a small price to pay. Really a great experience; there is just no better place to go for jeans period. Richmond is really becoming a great place for mens fashion and its due to places like Shockoe Denim. read more
