With so many restaurants opening and closing in Miami, it's hard to find worth one that won't break the bank and isn't all hype, where service is mediocre and you can barely hear the person in front of you. This rooftop in Wynwood is nothing like I just described. I was in the area and up until that moment, I had only heard of Shiso and knew it was nearby but wasn't sure where it was located. (You can miss it if you don't look up every once in a while btw) I like the idea that it's kind of hidden. The path leading to the restaurant is stamped with the name and it leads you to a case a stares directly up to the entrance. My friend and I went for happy hour so we sat at the bar. We were greeted with menus and a couple waters. I really like the low lighting in there. I can't stand places that make you raise the brightness on your phone to read the menu or that make you feel like you've got the spotlight on you. The ambiance itself is warm. The decor is simple, yet Aztec-like. The bar is clean and not cluttered with random objects. Then came the food... yummmm. We got the tuna crudo x2, duck dumplings, stracciatella with sourdough bread, salmon belly hand roll, smoked brisket hand roll and a veggie hand roll. The tuna crudo is fresh with a little kick. I loved loved loved the salmon belly. Definitely going back for that and the duck dumplings. We were on a time crunch, so we didn't order more but I can see myself coming back for dinner. The flavor profile is rich and warm and ADDICTING! Also totally not food related but as a graphic designer, I have to say I love the "National Shisographic" menus! This was my first time checking out Shiso and won't be my last. I was pleasantly surprised from the walk up through the entire experience. A gentleman was out front to guide us in. He suggested the indoor bar since it was a bit muggy. I can't do the stairs too good so he walked us over to the entrance and sent us up on the elevator real vip style. Lol. The aesthetic of the entire place to include the restroom is so cute. And the food matched the vibes. I had the oxtail udon and it was delicious. The cocktail menu is separated by different places so I drank a spritz from Italy. It was really good also. Service was really good and the energy was great. We attended Shiso on New Year's Eve for a party of 12, celebrating a 50th birthday with out-of-town guests. This was a prepaid, ticketed 5-course NYE dinner purchased weeks in advance for the 9:00pm seating, advertised as including alcoholic beverages, dessert, a champagne toast, and a DJ. What we experienced instead was one of the most disorganized and disappointing restaurant events I have ever encountered. We went out of our way to ensure this would be a smooth experience. One member of our party visited the restaurant twice in person ahead of time to confirm table placement and to confirm we could bring a birthday cake and specialty champagne. We also stopped by at 5:00pm on New Year's Eve to drop off the cake and champagne, at which time there was only one chef and one hostess present. We later learned the 7:00pm seating had been canceled due to low sales, meaning the 9:00pm seating was the only service that evening. Given that, it is difficult to understand how the kitchen and staff were so unprepared. When we arrived at 9:00pm, there was no hostess available to seat us, no greeting, and no direction. We had to find our own table while other guests were already seated. There were zero New Year's Eve decorations -- no balloons, no hats, no party favors, no glasses, no horns -- nothing. I have never seen a restaurant do absolutely nothing to acknowledge New Year's Eve. Instead of the advertised DJ, there was a live band playing slow, unexciting music. The DJ did not come on until after midnight, which only made it more frustrating that the promised music was not provided throughout the evening. We had one extremely nervous server for a table of 12 who appeared to have little serving experience. After water was poured, we immediately explained that we had one shellfish allergy and two gluten allergies. The server left to check with the kitchen and did not return for approximately 20 minutes. During this time -- about 30 minutes into the evening -- no drink orders had been taken. When we asked about drinks, we were told the drink package was an additional $89 per person, despite the tickets clearly stating that drinks were included. This understandably upset several guests, and some went to the bar to order drinks themselves. A manager was eventually called over and clarified that the server was incorrect and that drinks were included, and agreed to comp the bar drinks due to the confusion. While this was appreciated, the server remained largely absent, and our table received only about three drinks total over a three-hour dinner. Food service was equally disappointing. At approximately 10:15pm -- about 75 minutes after arrival -- food finally began to arrive. For a table of 12, we were brought one plate of sushi and one small salad, while tables of two near us received the same portion sizes. The guests with allergies still had nothing to eat. When we asked, we were told the kitchen was backed up and to please wait. By around 11:00pm, nearly two hours into the evening, food began arriving all at once and completely out of order. The advertised highlight of the meal, prime rib, amounted to two pieces total for 12 people. The food itself was decent, but everyone was so hungry by that point it was eaten immediately, with no opportunity to enjoy it. At 15 seconds to midnight, the band stopped for a New Year's countdown. We were fortunate we had brought our own champagne, as none was ever offered to us despite it being included. After midnight, the DJ finally came on with upbeat music, which only highlighted how mismatched the earlier portion of the evening had been. After midnight, the restaurant brought out the birthday cake we had dropped off. It was cut into very large slices, wasting nearly half of the cake instead of allowing us to take leftovers home. The ticket included dessert, yet no dessert was served to us at all, apparently because we had brought a cake -- something that was never discussed or agreed upon in advance. We left around 1:00am feeling completely disappointed. Both the New Year's Eve celebration and the birthday were ruined for our group. Many guests expressed frustration that this was a prepaid event and that the restaurant was clearly not prepared to execute it. If your first and only seating is at 9:00pm, there is no excuse for guests to wait over an hour for food and nearly two hours to be fed properly. The service was extremely slow, the staff appeared untrained for an event of this scale, and the overall planning was nonexistent. Shiso should not have offered a ticketed New Year's Eve event, and I would strongly caution anyone considering a holiday or special-occasion dining experience here. read more

After playing mini golf at the Puttery - my friends and I stumbled across this restaurant by going up an elevator to the second floor. We were shocked to find a dark hallway, music and a beautiful restaurant. The service was phenomenal. Joey greeted us with kindness and excitement. Our server was amazing as well - he exuded positivity and knowledge. We tried a couple of things on the menu and were very impressed. The corn bread was served warm and sweet. The duck udon noodles were so decadent and rich - the flavors were insane. The fried chicken was a fun mix of fried and smoked chicken. What an amazing restaurant! We decided to go at 5:30pm on a Saturday night with no reservation and surprisingly, it wasn't packed. From the second we walked in everyone was very friendly, the decor was beautiful and modern. We sat at the bar and was presented with a Happy Hour menu along with a regular menu. Drinks are average. Doesn't live up to the hype at all. Servers: not a lot of experience. For a place who is trying to self proclaim the high end status, you must have impeccable customer service. That was not the case at all. The waiter, the serving staff, the bartender, all need a course in elevated customer service. Food quality: The risotto is not edible. Do not try! The makis: you're better off get the pre-packed publix rolls. It's way better than what this place is offering. Their "most popular" dish, the oxtail udon noodles, has a hint of oxtail and terribly prepared udon noodles. It's a spot that focuses on esthetics instead of food quality and service. Brand spanking new and what a beautiful ambiance to walk into! Located on the 2nd floor with a Terraza vibe, they definitely did a great job at the interior design! Miami needs more rooftops and this is perfect, especially that they have ceiling fans :). This place was great, but not amazing. Everything I ate was very good or better, but nothing that I want to return for a second time except for the oxtail noodles which were phenomenal. The service was outstanding- ALMOST annoyingly so because we were trying to have a leisurely, timely dinner and they kept checking on us, but I'm not here to complain about too great of a service. The restaurant was beautiful, both the outdoor and indoor, with a spectacular bar. Now let's talk about the food-- I love scallop, and I ordered the nigiri. There was too much lime on the scallop and it drowned out the sweetness and flavor of the scallop itself, which ruins it. This was my least favorite dish. The hamachi was refreshing, and delicious. Nice kick to it, too. The salmon belly hand roll was simple, tender, and yummy. The stracciatella was great, and was my pickiest friends favorite dish. Hard to get stracciatella wrong though. The cornbread with uni and ikura was the most unique dish I tried. I love uni and thought it was a very interesting bite. The corn bread was served perfectly warm. The BBQ toro was my second favorite thing, tender and flavorful. Finally, the oxtail noodles were out of this world. Exorbitantly rich, and perfectly al dente. I don't know how someone could eat this to themselves it's so heavy and rich but in the best way. So much meat, and perfect to share. I would order this again and again. The gelato was good, the mango habanero being the best. All in all, I would come back here, but I'm not in a rush. It's quite pricey, but I would recommend it to friends. read more

Sipping on their variety of cocktails, I could easily narrow it down to their Martenilli Sling which stirs Bombay Saphire Gin, Hana Apple Sake, Falernum, and allspice dram, it evokes ginger flares, which might be because of the apple sake. Another refreshing sip was delivered by their Wasabi Margarita with Patron Reposado, Yuzu liquor, and wasabi lime, twisting a new version of this classic Mexican cocktail with Asian inspirations. The third choice would have to be their Ume Old Fashioned which personally I'm not that much of a fan of because of its bitter taste, but had to admit it looks very sexy because of its orange peel decoring the iceberg cube. The last and one which I wouldn't like to try again is their Rum Cocktail, maybe because I'm not that much of a fan of their recipe, or maybe because I just had too much drink. Separate mention to their Espresso Martini version the Churro Carajillo, which I expected to have a signature taste, but it was just like a sweeter version of a traditional Espresso Martini. Like any restaurant Shiso had some good things, some bad things, and some okay things. Starting with the good the service was amazing. I truly appreciated how attentive the servers were and how knowledgeable they were about the food and drinks. Next we have the okay things. I felt most of the food was just okay we ordered pretty much everything on the happy hour menu + the corn bread and the oxtail udon. There wasn't really a single standout dish. Everything was good but nothing was great. It was a bit disappointing since we came for our anniversary and had been looking forward to trying the food here. On to the bad, there was nothing particularly awful but I wasn't a fan of the surprise 20% gratuity added on to the bill. I would've tipped 20% anyways but I didn't see any disclaimers for this on the menu like usual. It was labeled "service charge" on the bill. I personally feel that restaurants should be more transparent about any mandatory charges. The cocktail menu didn't list any mocktails I had to ask the bartenders which isn't my favorite way to go about ordering one as someone who doesn't drink. The music is also a too loud to have any real conversation with the person beside you. I probably would've given Shiso closer to three stars but the amazing service from the staff really saved our experience. read more

This is an absolute must-visit for incredible food. Sure, everyone flocks to Sunny's, but Chef Raheem Sealey's new spot is on another level. The location and design are stunning--thoughtfully curated and truly beautiful. We explored a variety of dishes and are already eager to return for more. The MISO CORN BREAD with ikura and an abundance of uni was an unexpected yet perfect blend of flavors--it could easily belong on the dessert menu. The DUCK DUMPLINGS came with a sauce so good you'll want to scoop up every last drop. The CHILEAN SEA BASS with coconut curry and miso butter was rich and flavorful, while the OXTAIL UDON NOODLE, mixed with a creamy cured egg yolk, was simply a showstopper. As a side, we had the CRISPY POTATO with salami vinaigrette and cheese sauce. The chunks of salami were a fantastic touch, though the balance could've used either more potatoes or a little less cheese sauce. I was excited to come in for happy hour with the girls. The entrance was a little hard to find. The sign is not front and center on the main road it's a lil more inside the building. If you see valet then you will see the place on the right side. You can also park on the street and use the pay by phone app. There were plenty of parking spaces but maybe it's because I came at 5:30 on a Friday. Upon arriving you have to take the stairs up to the restaurant and you enter a beautiful outdoor patio area for dining and the outside bar. Love the artwork that sets the ambiance and the greenery. We were greeted by a friendly bartender and ordered the army navy cocktail made with Roku gin from the happy hour menu. We stayed outside for 30 minutes and decided to go sit inside it was hot. When we walked inside we saw beautiful artwork decor as well. Very beautiful ambiance, perfect for date night and dinner with friends and family. We order the smoked brisket hand roll to start. It was delicious. It kind of reminded me of a Korean kimbap because of the flavor of the smoked brisket. Next up we ordered bluefin tuna crudo, smoked salmon belly hand roll, duck dumplings, crispy octopus, and smoked chicken lollipop. The bluefin tuna was delicious and refreshing! Bravo to the restaurant designer. Now on to the staff...really engaging from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Our server Chelsea was intent on making our dining experience wonderful and she succeeded. Here is what we loved in the food category... Salmon Belly Nigiri, Short Rib Gunkan, Chicken Lollipop, Scallop Handroll, Creamed Corn and Shiso Chicken and the Jorio Montepulciano. NYE event was overpromised and massively underdelivered. $150 pp for a 5-course prix fixe that lasted 5 hours. The first course arrived an hour late, and food was served scattered--not by course--in small family-style portions that were nowhere near what was promised. We were a table of five, and we were told there would be "a lot of food," yet we constantly had to ask what was still coming. Because we were so hungry, we ate each plate immediately, only to wait another 30-45 minutes for the next one, which was often only a partial course. This makes you seriously question how this event was planned. With a pre-fixed menu, there's no excuse for not serving complete courses to all tables at the same time. Drink orders took forever. The promised entertainment amounted to one champagne toast at midnight. A countdown. And that's it! No celebration, no atmosphere - The DJ. Put on some music that wasn't bad, but Everyone stayed seated, still waiting for food. The food itself was good, but that doesn't excuse the terrible pacing, poor service, and zero accountability. No explanation, no apology, no service recovery--not even comped drinks. read more

It's been a while since Miami showcased an all around 5 star dining experience. Shiso has thought of the entire experience, hitting all the senses at just the right point. The decor transports you to a slice of industrial Miami Japanese fusion. The live DJ does not discriminate between genres or eras, with every song bringing you a piece of nostalgia or those shoulder sways you can't help but make. The art, seating, lighting and texture throughout is thoughtfully curated. And then, the reason you came...the cocktails and dishes were out of this world. Every single bite had us wishing we ordered even more to try. The combinations transport you to nostalgic flavors or open your palette to a new experience. The service was unbelievable. I can't remember the last time I had this kind of service in Miami.
