One of the best Mediterranean restaurants Augusta has to offer. This Turkish restaurant has a wide variety of grilled options to choose from starting from your classic chicken kebobs, gyros, to rib eye steak kebobs. Their platter option comes with rice and pita along with a small container of sauce. Their meats are about 7oz per kebob, so the $17.50 chicken Kebob is a single kebob with a hefty portion, but not a cheap cost. They are also flexible on substituting one kebob for another, especially if you get the mixed platter, but there is a surcharge. The meats are grilled freshly on the spot and very moist. The rice isn't dry and the balance of everything comes together well. Food isn't greasy or heavy, especially if you're cautious on getting the cleaner options like chicken kebob and rice. Shishkebab always seem to have some special to take advantage of. For example, their Father's Day special is a 4 meat mixed fajitas for $25. The interior design is quite unique with a small shop area on the side with Turkish chocolates and desserts for sale. Most of the restaurant looks like any normal restaurant with booths and tables, but another corner has been furnished for more of a traditional Turkish look. The furnishing makes it look like a hookah lounge; looks quite relaxing to dine sitting there. They also have unique Turkish weapons and dolls furnished along the walls giving this place a unique authentic vibe. Overall, the food is not heavy and pretty healthy if you get basic stuff like chicken & rice and not go too heavy on the sauces/sides. I really enjoyed eating their food and certainly will be back. We were craving a gyro and Shishkebab Restaurant claims to have the best in town! The restaurant is conveniently located and has ample seating to include traditional middle eastern floor seating. The good. There was no wait and I only waited about 5 minutes for my togo order. The gyro was standard size and the lamb was well seasoned. The tzatziki sauce was excellent. Their baklava is walnut which isn't my favorite but it was decent if you have a sweets craving. The bad. I would have liked a little more meat on the sandwich. I would also have liked the vinegar based dressing on the side for the salad as it spilled everywhere on the ride home. The ugly. It was a good meal and hit the spot. It has been a while so going for a Gyro was supposed to be a treat. The person who took our food order did not have a working knowledge of the menu. Our drinks came after we reminded him when our dinner arrived. The Gyro meat was over done and lacked flavor. Even the tzatziki sauce was bland. It felt like the restaurant had changed hands again. Most of the booths were empty but many take out orders were being filled. So, as disappointed as we were, other people seemed ok with it. My husband and I need a quick lunch while running errands and have been meaning to give Shishkebab a try for a while. We were both very happy with the choice. We were greeted immediately as we came in the door and informed we could choose where we would like to sit. We opted for a booth today but will definitely try out the traditional floor/cushion seating at a future visit because we will definitely be back. We ordered the feta rolls and hummus appetizers. The feta rolls were so good that they never had a chance of getting photographed. They were light and crisp while still having a substantial creamy cheese filling. The hummus on the other hand was underwhelming, it was served with delightful soft fluffy pita and looked fantastic when it came out. The color immediately led us both to believe it was perhaps a roasted pepper flavor but somehow it was the least flavorful hummus I've had in a while. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad and as you can see we still ate most of it. The texture was perfectly velvety and creamy, it was just boring. Not garlic, no herbs, no nuttiness; just chickpea flavor plain hummus (which admittedly it is sold as). For us we wouldn't order it again, not because it's bad, but because the disconnect between the appearance and actual flavor was a let down with each bite. Enough about the hummus. We both ordered the lunch special gyro wraps. I got mine with the baklava. My husband opted for the rice. I would say that their advertisement of "best gyro in town" is accurate. The pita is soft fluffy perfection that is thick enough to handle the juicy meat and veggies without falling apart. The meat was tender and full of flavor, the crisp lettuce and pickled/marinated vegetables was a refreshing contrast and the tzatziki sauce was perfect. My husband did note that he missed having fresh tomato on his, for me the cabbage and onion provided to much moisture and freshness that I didn't even notice the lack until he mentioned it. His rice was fluffy, buttery with just a hint of nuttiness. A good white rice. My baklava was fantastic. The flaky crunch with the sweet almost creamy walnut filling was the perfect finish to my meal. Our server was attentive throughout the entire meal refilling our drinks and checking in on us. The owner takes his time to let you know whatever you need to with the dishes. He's very knowledgeable and helpful, because I'd never had Turkish cuisine before. I don't know why after eating her. I'm a first-time customer at this restaurant and I ordered the $10 Gyro wrap to check out their claims of "the best gyro in Augusta". In a word, and to put it mildly it was downright awful! First of all, the gyro meat is processed; there's nothing more special than what you get at Arby's, except that Arby's is almost half the price. Secondly, the meat did not come off the doner/skewer rotisserie (they have 2 but both were turned off). Instead the meat came out of a small metal container warming on the grill for who knows how long, because it was almost as dry as toast. Thirdly, the add ons were a bit of shredded lettuce, some thinly sliced onions and some pickled(?) red onions(?) (not sure exactly what it was), and even the tzatziki sauce was watered down and quite awful in itself! There is also nothing traditional about the sandwich at all - let alone claiming that it is the "best Gyro in Augusta"!? I'm Greek so I know very well what a traditional gyro should be: real meat (not processed bologna!), with tomatoes and onions and a healthy spread of tzatziki - a sauce that is about as thick as yogurt - NOT something with the consistency of milk! Needless to say, I won't be back here ever again and if I ever get in the mood for a processed lamb gyro, I'll get 2 gyros from Arby's for just $2 more, and I know they'll be much more traditional than this restaurant! read more

Delicious home style food in a cozy casual setting. All the items we ordered were perfectly seasoned and well balanced. The only downside was no vegan sauce options to swap in for taziki, with a tahini sauce option I would give this place 6 stars. What we ordered: Baba ganoush: 5/5 good flavor and balance Grape leaves: 6/5 these were incredible, took me back to my childhood when my grandma made grape leaves from scratch. I wish I'd gotten another order to go, just writing this review makes me crave more. Hummus: 3/5 compared to everything else the hummus didn't blow me away. It wasn't a creamy or nutty as I would prefer but was nicely spiced. My hummus loving kids weren't interested in this one but my husband and I ate it all - so not bad Lentil soup: 8/10 Wow! The flavors in this blew me away. It was rich and creamy with plenty of olive on top, a hint of mint maybe? It was amazing. Order the soup, you won't regret it. I really wanted to like this place. The staff is friendly and you can see the food being made. However, the food is just not good. The beef/lamb gyro I had was dry and flavorless. The fries were cooked fresh but tasted old and were discolored. Maybe the grease was too old? The portions were also extremely small. It was just way too overpriced to be this underwhelmed. This was my first visit to the Shishkebob and I was a bit worried because I had remembered that a friend mentioned when she went she sat on cushions on the floor! No fears though as they also have tables. It's a cozy place (if memory serves it was a Huddle House in a previous incarnation). It serves Turkish and Greek dishes and the decor was Middle Eastern-ish. The server who greeted us was very friendly and told us to sit where we like. We found a table and she quickly brought menus and asked for our drink order. The menu proclaimed that all the dishes were cooked fresh. My dinner companions both got gyro plates while I opted for the Kafte. I also upgraded my salad to the "Shepherd's salad" which had tomatoes, cucumbers and a pomegranate dressing. We all ordered rice as our side. Their platters came loaded with slices of lamb meat, a side salad, rice and a pita. My plate included three meat patties, rice, my upgraded salad, rice and a pita. I really loved the taste of the Kafte. So much so I immediately looked up a recipe to see how hard it was you make! I gave everyone a taste and we all agreed that it was delicious. Their gyro meat was very good too. After our meals we each got a small piece of pistachio baklava for dessert. Two out of three thought it was perfect but mom thought it was too dry. The others also ordered Turkish coffee but, since I wanted to sleep, I declined. I did have a sip of mom's. It was piping hot and very strong but paired perfectly with the baklava. I enjoy this place very much. I ordered the falafel dish with Taziki and pita bread. Nothing to crazy but, then I got brave and had spicy turnip juice. The waitress was knowledgeable when I asked her about when ordering and let me know how it would taste and she was spot on. The more a drank the spicy fermented tasting juice served over ice the more I liked it. Not a fan of things being too sweet so this was a lovely treat. They have a mix of regular tables and chair and a platform where you can sit on carpets and cushions with your feet folded. Will be back! read more

It has been a long time since we visited this restaurant because the traffic in Evans is daunting. We ate there about lunch time and it was not crowded but it was steady and lots of folks coming for take out. The interior was the same, unpretentious and comfortable. Our server was a most pleasant woman who patiently waited while our friend studied the menu for a loooonnng time. My daughter ordered kofte and liked the meatballs in the broth. I had the same old gyro plate with the traditional salad and rice which never fails. The dessert of bacclava was not as good as I remembered and I thought it was dry but we had the good sense to order some Turkish coffee and that helped immensely. The coffee is so good. We will one day brave the Washington Road traffic to revisit the Shish-ka-Bob and have another good meal. read more

Last time I was here was over 6 years ago. The place looks different not only on the outside but the inside too! We were greeted by our server Andrew who was knowledgeable about items in the menu and answered any questions we had. On his recommendation I ordered the Sultan Kebab. I didn't read properly because I was expecting kebab but I was pleasantly surprised by kebab wrapped in thin dough. It was delicious and had a little kick. I was served a salad before hand instead of on then side which was a nice perk. It came with their own signature salad dressing. I also tried the rice and pita fries. The pita fries are so good but yet so bad - if you know what I mean. I imagined myself going to the gym after to burn all the extra calories HA! I wish I had saved room for dessert but I couldn't even finish my meal. They told me they had not only baklava, but speciality baklava and a different flavor cheesecake - I will make it a point to try them next time I come in. We also shared the Babaganoush-Char-grilled eggplant puree flavored with sesame paste, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice and served with pita. Another delicious appetizer. I never thought eggplant puree had such a great flavor. For the main meal our friends split the mixed grill. This is a HUGE plate of food with Large platter with gyro kebab, chicken kebab, lamb kebab, and spicy ground lamb/beef patties. Served with pita and tzatziki sauce. Worth the price and plenty to share with more than two people!!! The kebab flavors are absolutely traditional an I know I keep saying delicious but it was!!!! My husband had the Kofte-3 pieces of Turkish seasoned ground meatballs.. The seasoning on the meatballs was delightful. These are not the traditional meatballs you may think but flat meatballs with a wonderful taste you must try. However one of the best meals was mine. The Gyro wrap. It looks exactly like their website and is HUGE!!! Do not ask for extra meat because you will not need. This is a traditional gyro and the meat with slaw on top along with sauce is one I will come back for. If you want a true gyro - COME HERE! Our last delightful surprise was the Kunefe-this is a crispy cheese-filled dessert made with kadayıf (kah-dah-YUF'), which is a traditional shredded wheat dessert with pistachio filling. I pass by this establishment daily and I decided to give it a try because I love Turkish food. I called to place an order and was given a different number to call for delivery. They use Augusta Takeout Express for delivery (similar to Uber eats). I ordered the chicken shishkebab platter and it comes with 1 chicken skewer, rice, tzatziki sauce, and pita. The platter was $10. I opted for extra rice and no salad. When my food arrived, it looked so lackluster, it didn't have that fragrant smell that i love so much about eating Turkish and Mediterranean food. I literally had a big plate of rice with a piece of chicken, they even forgot to include my pita bread. It looked thrown together and tasted like it was thrown together as well. I barely ate it. The chicken barely had any seasoning on it and it didn't taste grilled. I was disappointed. All the good reviews I've read and my food was just blah. After a brief glance through the menu, I decided on the Lamb Wrap with an unsweetened iced tea to drink. The food did take a little longer than I anticipated but after the first bite we could taste the quality and freshness; fast food doesn't always translate to quality food. The portions were generous and the price point was fantastic. After gratuity for my Lamb Wrap and unsweetened iced tea, my meal was well under $15. Quality food, generous portions and at a price point next to impossible to beat for the freshness of ingredients we were served. Found this Turkish restaurant for dinner take out and ordered two platters: 1. Spicy Kebab with two sides (potato and pita fries) 2. Gyro Kebab with two sides (mixed vegetables and pita fries). Service from the owner/management was good but the food was a bit lacking especially with the spicy kebab platter. The menu description stated spicy sausage skewered with mixed veggies but our plate was missing these. When we called, the manager stated they were taking the mixed veggies out of the menu but forgot to tell us. The sausage was actually dry and hardly spicy to the taste. The lamb and beef on the gyro platter was a bit tastier but still dry. The side of mixed veggies were soggy. However the savior of both plates were the pita fries. Overall, not much value for the choice of food ordered and sadly, this place won't be making a loyal customer of us. FYI: We have dined at Turkish restaurants from CA, TX, MA, NYC and throughout Europe before pandemic so we have some experience with Turkish flavors. read more
