We decided to stop by Shirley's kitchen for a quick breakfast. Earlier in the morning, we had to attend a couple of work events, so this was an opportunity for us to engage in some type of breakfast or brunch meal. I was very surprised at the amount of options that they had here. The menu had breakfast, lunch, American, Mexican, and even a couple of surprising options. I was impressed because they even had like Old School shakes and smoothies and delicious coffees that you could choose from. We were seated in a two seater next to the wall in. It was really cute the time we came for this visit. Although it was after Christmas, they still had very nice Christmas decorations up on the walls. I loved this! We ordered our food and it came out within about 10 minutes cooked fresh. I went for the black tea, and I'm glad that I did. My husband went for the hot herbal tea. Everything tasted great in the customer service here is phenomenal. We were greeted upon arrival. We were waited on with the great attitude. Our server even answered any questions that we had about the menu and what they had to offer she was kind, and polite. There were other customers there, and I figured that they were regulars. They have an outside patio that you can sit in, and I like that because I saw a lot of groups meeting for lunch so that was cool to see. Overall, this was a great visit and I'm glad that we found Shirley's. Apparently my husband has been coming here for some time, but this was my first experience and I really enjoyed it. This is where east county begins I guess. I butched it up. No dress or skirt. No matter. I don't get syrup for my pancakes, so I ask...and I wait...and I wait. After 45 minutes someone asks me if I want a box for the cold nasty dry pancakes I haven't even touched yet. Smug looks, annoyed gestures. I left a dollar on the table for the sip of coffee I took and went home hungry because I didn't realize I was in a klan establishment. I think I was awfully generous. I just wanted pancakes on Saturday morning. That's too much to ask in a town that just simply doesn't serve my kind. Edit because of the lying owner. Post your video of staff checking on me. When did I say I was fine? Lastly how you gonna allege theft when your pancakes are still sitting on your table without being touched? I owe you money for crap I can't even eat? You're a dirtbag running a homophobic dirtbag establishment and how the hell dare you come at me like that after watching video of me sitting in your restaurant for 45 minutes and leaving with nothing in my belly! That's some real freaking chutzpah right there. Now let's break out your order sheets for your $40 a pound coffee, you freaking liar! I drank MAYBE 25-cents worth. Service was quick and food wasn't bad! I enjoyed my side of sausage. The restaurant got full pretty quickly at 9am. It's not loud in there but I could easily hear convos from other tables. My last review of the year. Let's see how it goes. First time here. Easy parking and a terrific price point considering 2026. Huge menu with a multitude of options. Including outside seating. At around 9 am, I noticed an extraordinary number of seniors like myself. About 20, that usually means Generous Price Points. Heads Up. This is a great place, where the food is always good . When ever you are in the area it is a must. Service is excellent they are friendly. Support a Mom and Pop gem of La Mesa. Definitely want to go back and get a chicken pot pie as that is one of there staples. I shared the French toast platter with the wife son got the NY steak and eggs. Went here for breakfast with my boyfriend. The restaurant is pretty small, very much old school diner vibes, but staff were all very friendly and attentive. I got eggs Benedict and boyfriend got typical pancake combo. Overall it was all very standard, exactly as I would expect. Eggs Benedict was good, bacon was crispy, pancakes tasted very old fashioned. Total plus tip came out to around $52 for two of us, which I see as kinda pricey for diner style, but with inflation these days who knows. read more

As soon as I walked in, I felt very comfortable. The aroma of the food was just warming and delicious. The whole vibe. The energy there was just made you feel comfortable like you're getting a mill straight out in the kitchen. When they handed you the Food, they reassured you know if they got their order correct you know they wanted to make sure I got everything. They didn't let me leave until everything. Make sure they got it correct I like that. Usually I have to check, but they just made it sure that they double checked for me and make sure I had every condiment. I had even offered me extra time. Everything was good. Know they hurt very they made you feel very welcome making you not want to leave. Made me wanna stay there and eat, but I had ordered to take it home. Honestly.... The BEST food and service!! Go early and stand in line ... it's worth it! We sat at the bar and our bartender JASON (friendly and fast, great drinks!) was amazing! Recommend the the Thai calamari (light batter fried crispy delicious) and then we got the kalbi and prime rib. So good!! Everything on top of the beautiful view and atmosphere was my favorite! Honestly a great experience here. First time visit, and left a great impression on me. The country fried steak was good but could have been a little crispier. But still a good steak. I would give it a 4/5. Ortega burger was good as well! The bun was a little burnt but not too bad. The burger was cooked well and had lots of flavor. Fries were average. I had the Country fried steak sandwich. I had them add cheddar cheese on it and a jalapeno. Sandwich comes with no Condiments. Steak patty was pretty big but lacked flavor. Seasoning needs more salt & pepper. I really think this sandwich needs to come with a choice of sliced cheese. It was lacking something. I added mayo to sandwich. It was ok but didn't wow me and chicken fried steak is my favorite. I order all the time. My Husband got the steak and eggs breakfast. He said it was good. Not overcooked and portion was a good size. Don't let the decor of this unassuming spot fool you. The dishes here are hearty, tasty and the employees here are super sweet! I came here Sunday around 10AM and was able to get a table pretty much immediately. Our waiter was a young fellow who was super nice and a total delight! He was so helpful and was great at checking in with us throughout our meal to ask if we needed anything. For myself, I got the CA eggs Benedict (with bacon on the side) -- 10/10. I ate everything on my plate because it was all too good to pass up! Shirley's Kitchen gives you a generous serving of hollandaise sauce atop your eggs, and the hash browns are nice with a slight crunchy layer on top. It's also a really nice spot for groups! Once you get in, parking is pretty limited and for a good reason; it's a smaller restaurant with outside seating available. My waiter was a young guy and he was very humble and kind when pursuing you with his service. He made sure I was taking care of my whole stay without overwhelming me every 5 mins.
