I had to collect a parcel at Shirley Post Office located in Shirley, Stratford Road Solihull today at approximately 0900hrs.
The parcel was in my maiden name, as I am currently going through a divorce I cannot get identification in my maiden name. Therefore I told the employee this, I was informed that it is standard policy not to give out mail without identification in the name of the recipient on the item. I offered her the confirmation email sent to me by the company & bank card. This seemed to make her very irritated and she shouted at me that unless I could "produce" identification in that name then I would not be given my item. Another female customer queried that couldn't I use a birth certificate, to which I was rudely cut off by the female manager I believe her name was Maria. Maria informed me that I had to leave the premises due to my attitude towards her staff.
I left & drove home to collect the aforementioned identification returning at 0933hrs. This time I was greeted with an icy glare by your employee & informed that, yes a birth certificate is adequate identification. On leaving to go & find the parcel she shouted over her shoulder that I was "aggressive, rude & obnoxious" she returned with a random parcel upon closer inspection proved not to be mine as it had a different surname & address. I told her it wasn't mine & was informed that "well it began with MUC something" I felt very hurt by this racially insensitive statement. My surname is McHugh, it is an Irish surname I find it highly inappropriate & insensitive that your employees who deal with many different ethnicities should be so ignorant & racist.
The employee then informed me that she wasn't paid enough to deal with the "likes of you" & that I had been "bitching" at her & that was why she had brought the wrong parcel. The manager Maria then informed me that I had to leave & not "abuse her staff innit!" I had no clue what she meant as I struggled to understand her mumbling speech. I asked for a complaints procedure but was told there wasn't one & that I had to leave.
I am utterly disgusted by my treatment to day, the situation escalated unnecessarily to a verbal attack that ultimately used racial discrimination. I will be sending a copy of this to the Birmingham Mail. read more
