It's been a long long time since my last review of Shinko Grill, and really everything I wrote has experienced some kind of change, so I wanted to update it for the post pandemic era. Since then, the half price sushi hours are no longer in effect, replaced with more standardized lunch specials and combinations. Three basic rolls for x, two specialty rolls for x, etc... as well as specials on hot food and the like. Due to this, I just haven't found myself there very often, and until my experience last week it had probably been two or three years honestly. We came during lunch hours on a Saturday. The lunch specials are good every day, not just weekdays, so that is a good thing. Ordering was simple enough, still done at the counter, given a number, go have a seat. Drinks still self-serve, no wait staff or the like which is totally fine. We ordered a general tso's chicken combination with fried rice and an egg roll, a basic two roll combination of sweet potato tempura and Ro Roll, and a two speciality roll combination that I honestly cannot remember the specific names of. There were also crab rangoons. My first area of dismay, even though we were eating there, everything came in to-go containers creating a ton of trash and waste. Plastic utensils, cups, everything. This was not the case in the past. I guess they've done the financial math that it's cheaper than dishwashing, but it's terrible for our environment. It would have been better if things even came combined on paper plates than this. As to the food, we were disappointed. Nothing other than the sushi and maybe soup appears to be made there, definitely true for all fried things. Rangoons came with plain duck sauce. Egg rolls the size of your index finger. Sushi wise, the sweet potato tempura roll was the best of the bunch. The fish tasted fine, nothing off putting there, but also nothing pleasant. The flavor combos just didn't make me want to eat more... and they were all crammed into to-go sushi trays with dry horseradish ("wasabi") It is not common for me to leave sushi pieces for the trash, but I did this time. Ultimately, the things that used to draw me here just didn't seem to be in place. But the price isn't bad at all. If you are more concerned with value, and don't mind some of the things I listed above, this place could work for you. read more

I get that it can take DoorDash (can't even order off of DoorDash, you have to use some other app off their website) to take a while to pick up an order, and I get if you're busy and it take a while to prepare the meal, but why was my order ready 30min before it was even scheduled to be picked up? And now, once we finally get our food, it will be pushing an hour and a half old... not really the way you want your potstickers and sushi... read more

I came here for lunch because I had a sushi craving, and it was nearby with good reviews. We ordered two lunch specials as pictured. One was the Two Basic Rolls lunch, which came with two sushi rolls off the basic list (I got salmon and spicy salmon) as well as your choice of soup, salad, or egg roll. We elected for the Miso soup. For under $12 after tax, I thought this was a reasonable price, with two rolls and a pint of tasty soup. The rolls were far from the best I've ever had, but better than what you'd find in the grocery store too. The other meal was the Sashimi Lovers plate which was "chef's choice" with multiple pieces of sashimi as well as a California roll, also paired with a pint of soup. This was about $23 so a bit expensive for lunch, but I will say it was a large and filling portion of food. The sashimi was not as cold as I would expect, was a bit bland on flavor, and one of the pieces seemed to be from an inured fish because the meat was soft and broke apart easily. All told, it was not exceptional but suitably decent for lunch. Prices were fair for the amount of food you get, and the service was quick. I'll probably come back here for an affordable sushi lunch again. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat. We used to come here a lot when we lived in the area, and have recently made a couple of visits for nostalgia purposes. We were not disappointed! Amazing food. Like every single thing we get is just SO good. From the sushi, to the bang bang, to the sauces, to the rice, to the sesame chicken... you get the point. Even the Pepsi is excellent. The only downsides of this place is that it's a mostly serve yourself atmosphere after you get your meal. It would be nice if they included just a little one time check in to see if sauces or anything is needed. The floors are also SUPER slippery which is tough for disability flare ups. The service at the counter is friendly enough, and the options are great. I do wish we could have a little flexibility in the choose 3 meal plan, but I get it. Honestly the food is just so stellar it makes up for the rest and makes us keep coming back. read more

Shinko grill is an awesome place. When I go in, I'm usually greeted by Darnell, Gisselle or Pierrah. Their hospitality is amazing. They're always smiling and ensuring everything is ok with your order. The food is great. I'm usually in for dinner & I also will have lunch on occasion. Their sushi, Shinko Tempura, is AMAZING!! They also have other sushi dishes. The cooks are even friendly. I love coming to Shinko Grill because not only is the food good, but the atmosphere is also great. They treat me very well and I haven't had a bad experience. I would give more STARS if I could. read more

Shinko has been a favorite for a while! We used to be so regular here that the cashier knew my order by heart. Shinko has changed some things because of COVId but nothing that hurt the quality. Instead of a soy sauce bottle on the table, they have packets with little cups. And the food is now served in a to-go container, which works for me because I feel like the serving size of the pick 3 is huge! For the most value, I always get a pick 3. My order is sesame chicken with white rice, a shrimp tempura roll, and the onion soup with extra fried onions. I ordered it tonight and have enough for lunch. The quality has always been fresh to me and it was served piping hot! I may have burnt my tongue on the soup but it was totally worth it! read more

Looking for Hibachi and sushi in the area, so we decided to try this place out. It's somewhat hidden in a strip mall, so if you're not looking for it, you may miss it. We ordered lunch specials: steak hibachi with fried rice and spring rolls, 2 signature sushi rolls (Dragon + Tsunami) with spring rolls, and U Pick 3 (chicken & broccoli, white rice, crab rangoon, and shrimp tempura roll), as well as a Kids chicken nugget meal w/white rice & drink. All food came out hot and brought table side. The chicken nuggets arrived w/fries vs. rice, which wasn't a big deal, I just swapped w/my white rice. The entrees were hot, tender, and delicious. My daughter fell in love with their yum yum sauce. It's a bit on the sweet side for me, but was tasty. Both my husband and daughter indicated the spring rolls were doughy, not sure if they're cooked from frozen or the veggies are leeching liquid during the cooking process, but it's something to improve upon. Great "hidden" gem with friendly and attentive staff, and it appears it has steady clientele base on how quickly the restaurant filled up at lunchtime. Although most restaurants offer weekly lunch specials, it appears lunch specials may also apply on weekend (we ate lunch on a Saturday). We could have taken advantage of their outdoor seating area, but opted to eat inside. With a few options for japanese cuisine, we will definitely be back. read more

Ordered takeout through their online platform. I ordered a shrimp hibachi with fried rice, mushroom soup, and ocean roll. The hibachi was decent, although the hibachi sauce on the shrimp was a bit sweeter than I prefer--almost teriyaki level of sweetness. The fried rice was fine. The mushroom soup was good. The sushi was ok, but I'm not sure if the online menu listed ingredients incorrectly, or if I was just served the wrong thing, because it came with thick slices of a spicy green pepper (either jalapeño or serrano) under the top layer of fish. It wasn't listed in the description on the menu, so it was unexpected. Despite this, I think it would have been ok if sliced thinner, but I ended up picking the pepper off because it completely overshadowed the taste of the fish. Overall, I would probably still go back, but I'd be more likely to order in the restaurant instead of online to ensure I was actually seeing an accurate menu. read more

We haven't eaten here in several years because after Covid, the quality of the food changed and not for the better. Today, we decided to give it a try again and see if it's back to the way it used to be. The answer is a resoundingly big no. We both ordered hibachi steak with rice and an egg roll. It was brought to the table in a to go box. Only plastic silverware as well. The first bite was fairly decent, however after a few bites everything was floating in grease. Like they literally poured oil into the bottom of the container. The vegetables were squishy and greasy and tasted like dirt. The white rice had absorbed some of the grease and was only edible for the first couple bites. We left feeling heavy and just a little bit queasy. Within a couple of hours, we were both physically ill stomach wise. Even taking Pepto Bismol didn't help. Now, several hours later, we're still sick and had to leave work and go home. To top it all off, the bill was around $50 which is absolutely insane. Something in our food caused stomach issues that are still present. We will never, ever eat there again. read more

It was hard to decide between Mexican and Asian tonight. Obviously we went Asian. I've had Shinko Grill delivered before and it was good. We actually dined in tonight, the food was decent, however, for a place where you order your food at a counter and get your own drinks, I find it over priced. The Bang Bang Shrimp was actually just their fried shrimp with a spicy sauce they give you on the side. Not truly Bang bang shrimp, oh, and they 'forgot' to give us the 'bang bang' sauce. The General Tso's was ordered with a spring roll which is not in the photo because they forgot that as well. We went to the counter and they did give us the sauce and spring roll. Sadly there were only a couple people in there, so it's not like they were really busy and forgot, they just forgot. I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm paying over 2.50 (these were 2.75) for a drink, I think there should be alcohol in it. Two adults, and just noodles and a drink for a 4 year old, and it was almost 45.00. I know food cost are going up, but for what they give you here it's ridiculous. They really need to improve on their sushi, some of the saddest Cali rolls, but all in all edible. read more

Ok Shinko Grill doesn't look like much, but it really is a little gem. I come here ONLY for sushi. So that is what my review will be on. My friend and I frequent this place. I would say like once a week or once every two weeks. They've been super consistent. Service: No frills, but the staff is always pretty warm and inviting. You place your order at the register, then they give you a number to take to your table. Sushi: I moved to NC from California and had been desperate to find a decent sushi spot. Shinko Grill does half off sushi from 3-6:30 PM during the week and I think they might do it on the weekends too. But call and make sure! You really can't beat 50% off sushi, but trust me, quality is not compromised. I can always count on the fish being fresh and artfully made sushi. My favorites are the rainbow roll, dragon roll, and alaskan roll. Other: I've never had the hibachi or other items they offer on the menu, but they get pretty busy and I see others order so I imagine it's good. Ok, so I was not off to a good start with a very long wait time for take out. The bag was stapled shut and my hands were full when I received it so I didn't open it to check the order. I should have... I didn't get what I ordered. I ordered a Green Dragon roll which I in the box on the right, a Dynamite Roll which is at the top of the box on the left. However I also ordered a Spicy Yellowtail Roll and a Spicy Tuna Roll both of which should have had spicy mayo on them according to the menu. With no extra spicy mayo, I just spread out what was on the other 2 rolls as best as I could. That being said... The food was good. While I'm not thrilled about the rest of the experience, it was inexpensive for sushi and it was pretty damn delicious! I will go back, but I will order before I arrive and I will check what I receive before I leave! read more

This place is delicious. I stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food here. I ordered the lunch bento box with general tso chicken, fried rice, egg roll and spicy tuna roll. They give you plenty of options to choose from when building your bento box and I appreciate that because most Japanese places seem to have very limited options for it. I also had the Boston roll. The sushi was very fresh and flavorful, the general tso chicken was a great portion size and they have homemade duck sauce. Terrible food. If I hadn't already paid for it I would have walked out. The restaurant itself is dark and dingy. The TV behind me was playing Spectrum News loudly Abdul the restaurant smells like grease. The steak hibachi was served in a sweet brown sauce. I've had hibachi over 100 times and never has it been served in a sauce. The meat was stringy and dry, despite the sauce. I ordered it rare and it came well done. The vegetables were wilted and tasted days old. The sauce? Overly sweet and not at all enjoyable. My fried rice was not delivered with the rest of the food and instead came ten minutes later. It was mushy and sweet as well. How, or why, would you get fried rice to be sweet? I couldn't eat any of it. I will not be returning. read more

Giving three stars only because the food is halfway decent but the customer service is awful.. I called and spoke to a woman who hung up each time. Called again and Amanda answered and said "I will only talk with men." I mentioned that I was a yelp elite member and he claim to say that they don't deliver because they are old. I replied that I am old and bedridden and couldn't drive if I was allowed to. I also mentioned that door Dash deliver the food and I have a receipt in a few emails from them and he said well maybe you have the wrong restaurant.. then he hung up on me. I called back again and it was a different gentleman and he knows nothing about the story but still claims they do not deliver or have delivery service and it was only him and another woman named Ashley. He also only wanted to speak to a man.He thought I was a telemarketer when I said I am a Yelp Elite member and I don't get paid for it I'm just here to take pictures in review places to eat and shop. I've had this place bookmarked as a place I wanted to try for awhile. I'm glad that I came here. The interior was very clean, and the staff was cool. Nice little sushi bar area to eat at. I liked the menu choices a lot because depending on your food mood, either Chinese food or hibachi can be your choice, and they have plenty of options. I went with the pick 3 option. My meal was the General tso's, with a shrimp tempura sushi roll, and crab ragoons. Everything was very tasty. Someone I was with got the bang bang shrimp... Awesome! That was probably my favorite. Food comes out very quick, and tasted very fresh. The prices are very reasonable. I will be back soon to try and explore some more options on the sushi menu. read more

The portions are small, the sushi in the photo is two orders; which I believe they need a better phone because they didn't hear when I said add crunch on top after repeating myself twice. Not to mention the sushi was in the same bag with the sesame chicken so the sushi is warm and tastes old. The sesame chicken is HORRIBLE, slimey, almost the worst I've EVER HAD; the fried rice is NOT good, I'm not even sure if it's fried rice as it has no vegetables in it unless you count the three pieces of broccoli they added as the "vegetables", the egg rolls are tiny and are NOT appetizing at all. The salad literally is just lettuce and sliced cucumbers with a fat piece of tomato in it, and water all in the bottom. Also had to let them know they had forgot one of the salads in my order so be sure to check your bag before you leave. I felt queasy and my stomach was bubbling just taking a bite of each item I ordered. I will not even be eating the sesame chicken plate but I'm already home so I'm not going to be asking for a refund; but I know not to ever come back. For $30 I could've got way more food that was flavorful and worth my money. read more

Clean environment, friendly service and timely food preparation. This is a hidden oasis.

The food is never a problem here but what I do have a problem with are people not using the right gender when talking to other people. My girlfriend was called a 'He' when she is clearly a she!! She walked away mad & the girl didn't even address what she said so I said "Where's the he?" Nothing was said after that either. There should have been an apology made plain and simple. I'm really upset this happened because I have come to love this place. I would recommend deveining the shrimp though because I threw up after eating a couple cooked rolls. read more

Food came out pretty quick despite the lunch rush. I went with 3 other people and we ordered 2 hibachi steak entrees and four sushi rolls (they have the 2 special signature rolls for $15.95!). The hibachi steak was flavorful, juicy, and not as salty/greasy as I thought it would be. Sushi was fresh and also very tasteful. I recommend Shinko Roll, Dragon Roll, Ichiban Roll, and the Carolina Roll -- all very delicious. I will definitely be back for the 50% off sushi from 3-6:30PM! read more
