Our meal was good. They were able to accommodate my dietary changes. Steak and Shrimp combo for us both. Easy order and quick delivery to our table. It was a bit warm inside the restaurant so we sat near a ceiling fan. The place was empty and sometimes that concerns me when trying a new place. They had many take out orders. Which is good. Decor is appropriate for Japanese style, lots of dining tables. They are tucked in the back corner of the plaza so make sure you look for them. It's old and warm but still good. I recently got delivery from Tokyo Express and it was great! It was delivered hot and fresh to me in a short time. I ordered the teriyaki chicken with broccoli that comes with fried rice and carrots. I love when Japanese restaurants add carrots so that was a plus for me! Everything was really good and tasted great together. It had a nice teriyaki sauce. The fried rice was nice and flavorful as well. I also tried a side of the hibachi noodles and they were pretty good as well. I think I prefer the rice but like that they have noodles too. One of my favorite lunch spots! I've started coming here so often that the staff now recognizes me. Even though I no longer fly incognito, I still absolutely love everything about this gem tucked away up Battleground. My go-to is teriyaki chicken and broccoli, and it's always made perfectly with ingredients that taste very fresh. Couple the fried rice with their outstanding white/shrimp sauce and you've got an amazing combination of flavor, salty and sweet. Service has always been fantastic and my orders are always ready when expected. Honestly, the only downside I can think of is their parking lot is a straight up hot mess. Crowded, full of speed bumps and pot holes. It's so bad I actually damaged my previous car when the rocker panel struck the ground because a pot hole was so deep. That's something clearly out of their control, but for everything that is in their control, is very well done, I'm a huge fan and am probably putting their kids through college! read more

It's an OK place. I have come here a few times with friends (usually before a movie). It is not a fancy place, and the food is just OK, but you more than get what you pay for. I usually get the the hibachi chicken special with vegetables and and fried rice. The quality varies. Sometimes it's great and sometimes its not. I can tell when it's been a slow day by checking how soggy my rice and vegetables are. However I will say that it has been edible every time time, which I guess says something for a cheap and filling meal such as this? The customer service could be better. It's very clear that some of the people who are working there do not want to be there. Some of the people there are nice though. Still, it's not a bad place to eat, that is if you can handle the poor customer service and the inconsistent food. read more

Also, the staff is very nice. It's nothing extravagant, but affordable and good. I don't understand people that give crappy reviews to places like this saying things like "they don't serve real Japanese rice". Lol. You cannot beat the food for the price! Just as good as a Hibachi dinner restaurant that's three times the prices. Think about it: for $5-8 dollars you can buy lunch at a fast food restaurant, have it taste great at the first bite, horrible by the last, feel awful 10 minutes later and regret you ever did it. Or.....you can come here and for the same price or even CHEAPER (most fast food combos are topping $10 now) get freshly sautéed veggies, meat and rice and generous portions too! Two Fridays ago, a group of five of my cohorts in crime stopped by for the shrimp lunch special. Four of us had the special, and were sick that night. The fifth wheel, stuck to a small side salad with ranch. I've never had a problem here before, but, it was kind of fishy that the four of us who had the special got sick. Furthermore, on most of the plates, there were only 4-5 penny sized shrimp on the plate, but, one plate did have 8 shrimp. To be sitting together, and to have that happen, as well as a large variance in the amount of food each of the four people with the special got. One plate was literally overflowing, while the next didn't even have enough to fill the divided plate's sections. Two customers had large cups of shrimp sauce (the whole reason we go!), while the other two had cups half the size of the other two. The four of us each paid $5.50 with tax, but the differences in portions delivered at the same time to the same table, and the ensuing feelings of being unwell hours later really doesn't make me want to go back anytime soon. Over the years, their prices have only gone up about $0.25, so I understand the portions getting smaller. But, to have that large of a difference at one table is crazy. Not sure what's going on here, but if it was my first time, it would have been my last. read more

You can tell the veggies were sitting in the salty sauce which was probably just watered down soy sauce from the taste of it. The veggies were not firm and dark from sitting in the sauce. The chicken was dry and bland. The fried rice you mind as well just been white rice with some hoison sauce. No egg, no veggies no flavor. It was just rice with sauce mixed together. The white sauce was gross as well. I've have had a ton of meals all over the east coast and this was by far the worst meal. I ate half of it and left. I eat here at least twice a week! They deliver to my home, always get my order right! I started out ordering the same plate every time, decided to switch it up , the owner who did not take my order, called me back to make sure the cashier took my order right because it was not my normal! What more can you ask for!!! That's exceptional! The owners are very personable, as they as how my puppies are by name every time I see them. I love ordering here, whether I call in and get it delivered, or I pickup, they've never disappointed me. I recommend this place over any other Japanese, any day. Consistently good, always friendly service, very fast, and more than affordable. We always get hibachi meals with extra meat on the side, which come with extra vegetables too. That much food lasts for about 2 more meals, so you're getting a lot of bang for your buck! After I paid for the special of the day, I headed to get tea and noticed that there were several large clods of dirt on the floor which had obviously been tracked in by a customer. After sitting down, I watched all 3 front counter employees walk past the dirt clods numerous times. After I had finished my meal, I sat there and drank tea for awhile longer. Finally, the young female employee got a broom and dust pan. As she started to remove the clods, I told her that was a good idea. She asked if it was bothering me. I told her that it was not, but that many customers were looking at the clods and that the cleaning should have been done immediately. Then, she asked me if I was a health inspector. I said no and told her that she didn't need to get an attitude. Then I could hear her and the owner talking about my comments. When I departed, the owner said something about "health inspector," Obviously, these folks don't take cleanliness seriously and the owner gets defensive if anything negative is brought to her attention. It hasn't been too long since their health score was 80.5, which is terrible! One would think that they would put a lot of effort into keeping the restaurant spotless. The price had increased (OK), but the portion size had decreased (not OK). Food is nothing to get excited about, but OK for the price and they are quick to bring it out. Because of the poor attitude(s), I will not be returning to Tokyo Express, ever. I had been an off & on regular for over 12 years. read more
