Saw this place on yelp and it's a stone's throw from my mamma's place so I stopped in. I have to first mention I don't think people know this place serves food, and good food! The bread they make the kolaches with is some secret recipe and is homemade, and it's so good it makes eating kolaches at 10pm at night seem like a usual activity. Also, had the ranger pizza with homemade crust, also excellent! B-Dub, the bartender, or in my case food deliverer and social coordinator, was super nice, laid back, and the right amount of chatty. He's awesome! It was open mic night so there were lots of local talent jumping up for three song sets. Delciously, fun way to spend an evening. read more

I must echo the sentiments of other yelpers: hidden spot with a great staff. It's like a step above a dive bar (I love dive bars) and there is a TON of space, lots of beer, and lots of TVs. You can come drink all the Shiner varieties and watch some sportsball. It even has a rooftop. The staff treats you like their friend and the beer is ice cold, what more could I ask for? My local friends brought me and I will definitely be coming back next time I'm in town. read more

Disappointed with the Steelers bar. Plenty of fans but kinda dead. I understand not having items on the menu on a Sunday afternoon. They were out of sliders and pepperoni rolls. The tacos were OK but not great. Beer selection was good. We came for the atmosphere and were underwhelmed. Win or lose a Steelers bar should be rocking. Came through Austin and was excited to see that Shiner had a saloon. We are originally from the east coast and when we found the shiner ruby red we fell in love. The bar is an old western feel with old barrel bar seats and lots of long horn skulls. They have happy hour everyday of the week and then specials at night for everyday as well. So Wednesday is $1 whiskey and Thursdays are $8 pitchers. This place also has live music every night of the week as well. We had the brisket tacos and the gold mine sandwich with chicken. Both were flavorful and come with a piling heap of chips. Cool place they ring a dinner bell when the order is up. If you in town go check it out you will not be disappointed by the service, food or beer. read more

I wasn't expecting to like this one because it's divey, but I actually enjoyed it. They have a fun retro arcade setup in the corner with a ton of old games, a 2-person shotgun arcade game, ring toss, and ample seating. The booze wasn't terrible either. I always come for lunch but this time was super awesome and so worth coming because of V. That girl is an absolute asset to this company. So dope and personable and knowledgeable... etc. On top of that, she highlighted my night because I didn't expect to come here but landed here and she treated us like normal humans which is so rare because it's hard to break that barrier of communication misinterpretation of guests. I attended an event here an had an absolute blast. Great staff, killer layout, and all around a good ol' time. Few better settings in Austin to get a good buzz going than on a "rooftop" playing cornhole. I hardly review spots, however I left in a hurry and left my ID at the bar (exchanged it for the cornhole bags) and Mr. David went out of his way to ship it to me here in san antonio. I will always appreciate places going the extra mile like that. It must be pretty annoying to deal with drunk people's mishaps, so to be willing to do that for me really made an impact on my overall perception of this place. If you're in Austin, can't leave without giving this place a visit! read more

I went to Shiners on Friday July 5 with my wife at around 7.30pm. First impressions were good, rustic decor big comfy bar stools and great music. The food we had was good pub food, egg rolls and a queso dip. The only real negative was the bar tender, he seemed more interested in having conversations with the four guys at one end of the bar and the three girls at the other end instead of serving us and there was only the nine of us there. When he did he served four cocktails in the same glass, as in not a fresh glass for each new drink. Must have been rookie hour instead of happy hour. read more

Love how I was yelled at for "sleeping" at the bar while I was literally looking at my phone. The bartender never even apologized, and even though I ordered multiple items, I had to wait long for a cup of water, until I asked again. Then I had to wait super long for my check, had to ask again, and they were hesitant to give me the industry discount. Dude, I'm a server and my gf is a bartender. This place was surprisingly empty for a Saturday night, especially given that there are so many bars on the street. That's good though, as we had picked it based on how not-crowded it was. The drinks were strong, but tasty. A bachelorette party had done part of a crawl here and left, leaving the staff to bring my group their leftover shots for free. The place has a weird vibe though. It's decorated in western attire to match the name, and when we got there the speakers were playing country style music. It was nice to be able to talk to each other without yelling. All of a sudden, a live rock band that matched nothing started playing the LOUDEST live music in the opposite corner from where we were and we couldn't hear each other and wanted to leave because it was so loud. Literally LOVED Shiner's!!! My friend and I visited this place while on vacation recently and had a blast. We heard the country music playing from the street and knew we had to head in here. The inside bar is so cool, literally. Like it was cold. That was so nice to escape from the heat, but we ended up going upstairs. We're from Seattle so we wanted to soak up all the heat we could get! They do have giant fans behind the bar upstairs/outside but I think they're more for the bartenders (rightfully so) because it was super hot up there even at night and the fans didn't really reach past the bar. All 3 bartenders we spoke to inside and outside were so nice and laid back and helpful. They have darts and jenga which is really fun and they don't just play country music! We had a great time here and would definitely visit again. read more

Yes. Yes. Omg yes. I've only been here twice, but I'm in love. Every year, my roommate and I celebrate SXSW by choosing to get daytime drunk as cheaply as possible, by whatever means possible. Basically, we're really classy. So a year ago, we were in the area searching for Which Wich (cause she's superrrr mean when she's hungry, I think she has low blood sugar or something. I still love her). We ended up passing this place and were amused by the set of stairs between bars. If you're not looking for the sign, you might miss it. We walked into this weird, country feeling bar, but it was had a badass vibe to it, too. It's done right here. We had whiskey sours, perused the menu, listened to a couple of bands, and headed out for the rest of our adventure that day. I remember my tab being next to nothing. My sister lives in San Marcos and when we go out, she likes to go downtown. I am not a downtown person. I'm more of a "let's find a dive bar where I don't have to wear a bodycon dress and heels that will make me snap my neck if i fall" kind of person. Everytime we go to Geisha Lounge next door, I'm begging her and all her friends to go to Shiner's, but she's older so she's bossy and she wins. My boyfriend and I came here last night (finally), and we saw that it was Whiskey Wednesday. Whiskey is my main drink right now, and I asked the bartender exactly what the special was. You can get well whiskey for $1, any way you want it. I got a bunch of whiskey gingers and they were strong and delicious. Last night was so perfect. They had a basketball game on while playing a badass mix of The Beatles and Handsome Boy Modeling School, and it didn't even feel forced. We were hungry, too, and since my sweetheart's pocketbook was hurting from our time at HandleBar, I decided to buy us food. We split the pizza rolls, the gold mine sub, and chips and salsa. All of it was fucking delicious. The pizza rolls were better than any hot pocket I've ever had, complete with no burning edges and icy middle, the chips were a little stale, but the salsa was so good, I didn't care. It was the right level of spicy. Anyway, the gold mine sub was amazing. Grilled avocado, bell peppers, lettuce, and some other stuff thrown in. It was so filling, even for my meat-loving boyfriend. Oh yeah, all of this for about $16. Score $$$$ I can't recommend this place enough. It's by far one of my favorite bars in Austin. They have the best hard to find Shiner beers, awesome drink specials, and amazing food. Go visit, but not on Wednesday cause I don't want to have to wait for my whiskey. read more

The bartender was terrible - hence really bad drinks and customer service. I rarely write reviews but the experience was so bad that I don'y want others to have a similar experience. The bartender made me different drink than I asked for (I asked for a ranch water and my drink tasted like a sweet margarita) and when I told him that he said he mixed the three ingredients and that's that. I also asked to change my food order while ordering and he said I can't change it since he had already punched in my order. I will never come back here and it doesn't matter but I haven't seen such poor service in such a long time. read more

How many types of Shiner Beer are there? I have no idea either. But, I do know that the flagship Shiner Saloon has them all. Maybe like 9, but I couldn't keep count. I stopped in Shiner Saloon with a lady friend and it definately was not her favorite spot to chat and have a beer. Me, I thought it was cool. Think Texas Roadhouse style bar, but clean, neat, open and without peanut shells on the floor. The Saloon has the usual mix of call and well liquors, beers and a few wines for flavor, as well as a nice sized menu with pithy names for items like chicken fried steak, and ham and cheese sandwiches. The price was right on the money for a couple of beers on a Tuesday night. I think maybe $4.50. Also, check out the cool views of sixth street and Congress from the open patio style windows in this upstairs loft bar. read more

Popped in here recently on the way to what the airlines might term "my final destination" (which sounds morbid, but whatever). I've always had a soft spot for elevated bars, be those the outside patio variety (a number of which seem to be popping up around town), or, in the case of Shiner's, and enclosed but lofty spot with a requisite amount of local flavor. Or, more accurately, locally themed accoutrements. So as you might imagine from the lead in here, Shiner's is a little linear in its approach to being a downtown Austin beer joint. First of all, it's not really a joint: more the beer-themed longhorn wall art-ed leather chair adorned space that would seem at first glance to be aimed a somewhat fratty clientele. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the spot for me rang a little, well, sterile. There are as you might think a full cadre of Shiner beers here (thank heavens that they make several now), and other cold ones both on tap and in bottles, and the staff seemed reasonably friendly if not particularly gregarious. I'd give 'em another whirl, but I may wait a bit. Just to see if the vision gets a little clearer. Likely theirs and / or mine. read more

Guh, this place is terrific, meaning, "causing terror or great fear". I went in for yelp drinks and asked the bartender "What are your yelp drinks specials?" and he responded with a condescending "I don't know". Hey Mister Manager, here's a tip, tell your workers when you decide to do a special, especially for a website whose user-base writes reviews on your bar. On to the bar, it's actually located in a nice spot, kind of away from the mess that is Dirty 6th and the doosh chill that is West 6th; they have decent beer, decent specials and Big Buck Hunter that doesn't cost a ton like Lavaca St. Bar. Unfortunately they somehow draw terrible live music, sad patrons and worst of all, they have a bathroom attendant. Turns out I know how to wash my hands, kind of a pro at it actually, no help needed NBD. Also the place inside looks like it should be on Dirty 6th and makes you feel equally as dirty walking in. I'm sitting with my friends in a large, oversized leather seat staring at a dead boar's head mounted on the wall, speckled cow hides covering various things, looking over at another wall mounting of a steer, an oversized wooden wagon wheel is holding our drinks and I'm trying to figure out if I like this place. Is this a honky tonk that you would hear about in a country song? No. Shiner's isn't sure if it wants to be a little bit country or a little bit rock and roll. The plus of this place is the fact that they serve every Shiner beer known to man and they have wicked specials during happy hour plus good prices at other times. This would be a good place to bring an out of town guest that are not from Texas to try authentic Texas beer. The downside is that the decorations are a typical Texas stereotype that is just not true. This is probably the kind of bar foreigners are picturing when they think of Texas and that isn't a good thing. However it is a nice reprieve between the cosmopolitan bars on the same block such as the dreadful Prague. Go here instead! read more

So FINALLY, Shiner's Saloon has opened its doors this past Thursday. Since then, I've been there 3 times already. Its located on the corner of 5th & Congress, 2nd floor, entrance is on the Congress side. Now I must say before hand, that the owners, Brandon, David and Jason, did a heck of a job putting this place together. These guys had alot of help from family & friends to get this done, and did ALOT of the hard @$$ labor themselves. These guys went to the roots of Shiner, Tx and tore down a house out there, and used the same wood from the house for their bar. How often do you see bar owners laying tile in the restrooms? They did cuz they wanted to make sure it was done right and done most importantly their way. And trust me when I say this, this place is starting to get noticed. They've got a packed bar, that contains either 7 or 8 different Shiner beers ON TAP. Plus they've got Fireman's 4 ON TAP as well. I'm not a fan of Fireman's 4, but I hear its pretty hard to find on tap, much less in the downtown area. And since it is on the 2nd floor, they have HUGE windows that you can stand/sit next to and enjoy the view from. TVs are placed throughout the bar and sitting areas for viewing, and yes they do have the sports package from what I hear. There are also a couple video games in the rear area as well. Now the times that I've gone, I've only drank their tap beers, but friends who have gotten mixed drinks, say they are made well and tasty. And shots, oh buddy how those go down without even flinching. So when you're downtown, check this place out, and keep your eyes open to all thats around in that place. Thanks to this place, I'll be going downtown alot more often now. ***Update 08/07/08*** So I talked w/one of the owners, and as of now, they are offering bottle service to those who care to order by the bottle. Nothing wrong against it, because I have done so myself, so they are catering to those that wish to order by the bottle. Also, they have opened up their kitchen. Now honestly, I was a bit preoccupied tonight to have a look at their menu, but from what I hear, and don't quote me on it, but alot of it is going to be bar type/finger foods. Now that can be a wide range of different foods, so that is why I say, dont quote me on it, but see the menu for yourself. Also, if you are nice and if Jason is working, ask him to do some fire tricks behind the bar.... TRUST ME, he will know what you are talking about. If you want to know who Jason is, or any of the other owners, take a look at the pics that I've posted. And on top of everything, considering the location, some may assume its going to become "just another one of those pretentious bars" in the warehouse district. But from talking w/the owners, they have told me, they want this place be accepting to all. IN other words, you dont have to be wearing some $150+ outfit just to get in. Heck I've gotten in w/shorts, tshirt & flip flops, on any night of the week. So come however you are, dressed up or dressed down, get down to the beat that the awesome DJ is laying down, and have yourself a drink. I like going to Shiner Saloon for the bartenders. They are friendly and quick to serve. They stock Three Olives Bubblegum vodka (my new obsession!). The clientele can be questionable, the first time I came here was during the Texas Tech - UT game and it was total mess of WT. I kid you not a woman motor boated herself on my friend (a girl) and walked away like nothing happened. My advice on Shiner Saloon...go straight to the bar and go in large numbers for protection from motor boat girl! read more

I actually dropped on in for some food. Not alcohol, but food. At a saloon. And, I was surprisingly surprised. The menu was diverse, and the food was prepared from scratch. Another plus is that the full menu is offered to 2AM everyday. Where else could you go to a bar--no, not a so-called "gastropub", but a similar-to-dirty-6th sports bar--and get an avocado and tortilla sandwich or housemade pizza? To be fair, I do love the trend of gastropubs. The dining world needs a fair helping of good food at good watering holes. The housemade pizza dough was touch soggy, but it fared well with the assortment of toppings included in my "supreme." I am curious as to how they roll their house-made dough in such a tiny kitchen. And I do mean tiny... All in all, acceptable pie, though. Now, the sandwich. The Gold Mine contains crushed tortilla chips, avocado, peppers, jalapeno ranch, lettuce, and tomato. It tasted just like that... though my sandwich did consist of mostly bread. But... the bread was indeed good. I would say that the grub at Shiner's is certainly acceptable, even more so for being a straight-up bar, but I would still recommend drinking as your main means of filling your stomach here. But... if you really would like to have a bite, their tiny cooking facilities do a fine job. Plus, who does not like something to scarf down after having a few intoxicating beverages, regardless of how good the actual edible product is? As long as it is edible. read more

So let me explain this place to you.... You walk in the double saloon style doors and are met with narrow stairway up under a chandelier of shiner bottles. As you get to the top there is a chalkboard with the days specials written on it. Immediately upon entering the bar you will notice three dudes standing at the edge of the bar. 2 rehashing Astro's glory days. (2005!!) the third talking about Dirk Nowitzki is the greatest basketball player alive. Laziest barbacks ever. The guys behind the bar are all your classic misunderstood jerks. Sure they shave their heads and the big ones facial hair may seem intimidating at first but they wouldn't harm a fly. Except the curly haired one. Shes a heart breaker. Trust me.. To the right you will see the stage. Put a dollar in the case and tell them to put their shirts back on this is normal. To the left is the kitchen. Yes they have good food there and Yes its open until 2 am and yes speaking from experience it WILL get you just sober enough to tell your cab driver where home is. Further back is a punching bag game that I am sure cheats, big buck hunter, ring swing and couches. Actual couches, not peices of wood with fabric on them actual couches and recliners. Overall 5 stars this place is great. You should go there. Just don't take my seat. read more

I never judge a book by its cover. I try to do the same for a bar, and I'll even give the bar three visits to let me down before I write a review for it on yelp. Your three visits are up, Shiner's Saloon. Reason #1 I don't like Shiner's: You didn't let us know what your yelp drink specials were when we asked. When we arrived during Yelp Drinks week, we asked the bartender what the Yelp Drinks specials were. He didn't know. When more yelpers arrived, the bartender finally gave us the table tents that included the specials. Being the Bloody Mary lover that I am, I just had to try your bloody mary. Reason #2 I don't like Shiner's: Your Bloody Mary was the biggest mistake I made all night. That's saying a lot, because I usually make a lot of mistakes. It tasted like watered down tomato-juice with a splash of tabasco. That thing normally costs $7? I'm 93% sure I could make a better tasting Bloody Mary using dishwater. Reason #3 I don't like Shiner's: Your bartender complained about making the drink I ordered. Hey guy, I'm standing right here. At least wait to complain about what I order until after I walk away. I hate to break it to you, but you're in the service industry, which means your job is to serve people. Now, that being said, on a slow night, I could see going there for a mellow night hanging out with a smaller group of friends. But that's it. And you know what, Shiner's? You have decently priced beer. You're in a cool location. You DO have great tables for Bananagrams. (So great, in fact, that I beat both Jason G. AND Kelly S. that night.) And, unfortunately, I will be back soon just to see my friend play an Open Mic. Maybe the fourth visit is the charm? I hope so. I want to like you, Shiner's, you just haven't really compelled me to do so yet. read more

What do you call cheese that's not yours?? Na-Cho cheese!!! Their nachos remind me of that place in San Antonio "Chachos, Chalupas, Chilaquiles, Cholos, y Chanclas" or something like that. My favorite are the longhorn brisket nachos. I love the western kitsch and all, too. It's Chiner! More importantly the service is great. When I ask bartenders from other bars where they like to go, they always mention Shiner Saloon. My only beef is with the talent they book. Some of those bands really SUHCK. read more

Living in the greater Austin-area since 2008; I, like many who live around here, have strayed away from downtown in favor of other fun parts of town. Even so, I do go downtown on occassion & when I do there's only 5 places I gravitate to: Jackalope, Casino El Camino, The Library Bar, Brew Exchange, & Shiner's Saloon (Lovejoys would have been #6 RIP). What I like most about Shiner's is their wide range of Shiner beers on tap, more than most bars do in one location as well as some Shiner drafts that you can only find in bottles. Another plus is that Shiner beers are almost sold at Domestic prices which is really kickass! Why drink Miller Lite when you can have a better quality beer for around the same price? Another big reason I keep coming back is their happy hour. Out of all the places downtown, Shiner's has one of the best happy hour specials. The atmosphere is pleasant & is usually not crowded (Their hh seems to draw office groups looking for a place to unwind). What gives me the 4 star rating is the food. Standard pub fare. nothing special. I do suggest their nachos if you're looking to fight off hunger. Big portion & they comes in either chicken or brisket. All in all, I like Shiner's Saloon & will most definitely stop in next time I'm downtown & thirsty. read more
