Shiners has been working so hard to improve their menu items. I recently visited with my daughter while she was home on Spring Break and got to retry items I had previously eaten. I can say that both meals came out improved from my last experience. I can't say enough good things about the staff and the owner Kevin. We absolutely adore them!! I come often not every week but often, just turned 21 a month ago and I was excited to go to shiners for a drink FINALLY.. well the bouncer sees my VALID ID gives me a stamp to drink. I go to the bar to order a drink and all the bartenders are ignoring me and my friends. We were confused? Then to find out the MANAGER told all the bartenders "we look underage" behind our back without asking for ID even though we showed proof of ID when asked and it was accepted. (We found out by regulars who knew the manager and he told them everything) Completely unfair there was a girl getting blacked out with a 21st birthday sash on so she was definitely younger than us. I have tried to dine at Shiners two times before this one. On weekends it is very busy and difficult to get a table. We ended up going on a weekday and were able to be sat immediately. They had live music playing that was very fun, and lots of tvs with sports playing. Overall, everything was just ok. The service was fine, the food wasn't anything over the top exciting. Maybe my expectations were really high since it was so difficult to get in before this, but I didn't really see what the hype was about in terms of the food. Looking for a place nearby the aquariaum led us to Shiners on the Levee. It was lunch time so it wasn't too busy. We went to the bar to order and then found a seat. They have a couple of arcade games, a bar, tables and booths, and couches sit at. Our meal came out quickly and had a lot of smokey bbq flavor. First Take - Huge place inside and outdoor seating. Looks like a great place to watch a live game and even a stage for live music (none when I was there, but potential). Service was excellent, kind people and very prompt when checking back in on me. Kudos to the front of the house, and the only reason this isn't a 1. Feasting - The BBQ is the worst I've ever had. Had the brisket and the ribs lunch plate, and they were just awful. Brisket was all fat, almost as if it was trimmed in reverse then thrown on a smoker. Flavor of the bark had potential but boy it was bad. The ribs, don't waste your time. Imagine the worst ribs you can imagine, have them sit in the sun and then tossed in a dry rub. Baked beans were great actually, and so was the Loaded Baked Potato. Green beans were likely out of a can, and the Brussels sprouts actually had a good flavor as well. Do not, I truly mean do not go for the Mac. Final Words - I am sure there's got to be something good here as it's such a huge establishment, it just wasn't good to me--especially coming from Texas. The menu said the ribs choice of meat was a 6 dollar up charge. I was okay with that, excepting maybe a half rack. I received TWO ribs. Kind of absurd but Anyways, ribs weren't bad. What a fun little bar. The food was the most surprising, it was really, really good. The atmosphere was a little dull for a weeknight ( we were hoping for line dancing, but none the night we went). We were with a group of about 10 and our server handled our larger group effortlessly. I wasn't terribly hungry so I just ordered a couple of sliders with fries and they were simple and delish (not dry like sliders sometimes end up). A friend of mine ordered a salad and let me tell you, it was GORGEOUS and TASTY (of course I tried it). Some friends and I wanted to hang out, so someone suggested Shiners on the Levee. I wanted to like it, but this place left me feeling it was just "OK". Shiners is not hard to find, thanks to the bright signage, and inside was pretty clean. The hostess was friendly and I was able to find my friends easily. Our server was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, which we really appreciated. The prices were a little higher than I had expected, but I had figured the portions would make up for it. One friend ordered a Pork Chop with Mashed Potatoes and the other, a Grilled Reuben with a Fried Pork Chop on it. I ordered a Shiner Cheeseburger (single patty) with Sweet Potato Fries. We waited for our food, as our server refilled my Coca-Cola and my friends' beers. I previously mentioned the portions would justify the higher than expected price. For my friends' food, it did, but not for mine. Their food portion was much larger than mine, (both meat and potatoes). My fries were sparse and my burger was quite small. Both items I had were not very flavorful, and the bill was pretty high. I was well disappointed but tried to look on the bright side: I was with friends in an environment we could talk in. The twist came with the "Potato Barrels" I had ordered to go. I brought these home, and my family LOVED them. These appetizers were like loaded potato skins, but with FULL FLAVOR! They were so good, I had wished I had ordered these instead of my burger and fries. Location, environment and the Potato Barrels are the best things at Shiners on the Levee. First time at Shiner's and it did not disappoint! There was a fun crowd there on a Friday night, live music, and I thought the layout of the place itself was well done. They have a big bar area with TV's tuned into sports. The live music is entertaining but not too loud that you can't have conversation during your meal. There is also a big patio that will be wonderful when the weather gets nice. Unfortunately we were quoted a 5 minute wait and ended up waiting nearly 30 minutes because they admittedly forgot about us. We weren't in a rush and enjoyed the live music while standing there waiting. They have some couches for guests who are waiting but we opted to stand. The service otherwise was fabulous. The potato barrels are everything you want in a potato skin app - cheesy and crisp! I got the pulled pork sandwich and it was perfection! I My sister got the brisket and really enjoyed it. She also had the green beans and we each had a corn muffin. I felt the dishes were elevated and appreciated the quality of the meats, no gristle and gunk. Overall the food was a 10/10! The staff is super light Sunday through Wednesday. Look, I get it. Opening a new restaurant, especially in a spot that's had failure after failure, is a daunting task. I really am rooting for this place, and I hope that they can turn things around but if my first visit is any indication, there's a lot of kinks to work out. I went for late lunch on a Monday; there was one other party at the bar, but otherwise, I was the only guest. A gentleman got off a bar stool to seat me and he was friendly enough. It then took entirely too long for the server to come to the table. She was friendly enough when she arrived and answered my questions, but given that she had no other tables, it took entirely too long to meet her. I ordered the Pulled Pork. The menu, which I forgot to take a photo of, listed three different prices, and a notation said that the portions were 1/2 a pound, a pound, and an even bigger one. However, I was told that the 1/2 pound was $14 (the middle price). Fine, but a little pricey without any sides (other than two slider buns). I asked what she would choose between the Mac and Cheese and the Baked Beans, and she said Mac and Cheese ($10), hands down. So I went with that. It then took what felt like a very long time for the food to arrive at the table. Despite having several sauces on the table, the pulled pork came with a portion of the Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce already on top. (It looked like marinara on top of the meat, and the watery sauce on the rest of the plate was not appetizing.) The pork was bland, and even the sauce didn't really give it much flavor. I tried the housemade BBQ and the Bourbon BBQ, and while there was a slight difference, they all had the consistency of a hot sauce. Perhaps I got spoiled by the defunct Sharonville joint, Smoq, but I want a little sugar and thickness to my BBQ sauce. The mac and cheese came in a very nice dish, with what looked like delicious bread crumbs on top, but the macaroni noodles were actually cold, and the cheese wasn't melted. I had to yell across the room to get my server's attention, but she responded immediately. She took it right to the kitchen and returned, stating that she threw it out and was having them make me a new one. When it returned, she said the chef himself had prepared it. So, then, I wonder why it was a completely different presentation (now in a crock minus most of the breadcrumbs) - and why had it been microwaved to an almost inedible temperature? Finally, I tried the cherry pie dessert. It was a big portion of hard-to-penetrate crust, with a small helping of cherry filling - served cold - with whipped cream on top. I can't imagine if I'd ordered it ala mode how much colder the dish would have been. I expect a cherry pie to either be served warm or at least at room temperature. To top things off, I used the restroom on my way out but got confused and had to interrupt someone's job interview because I could see the sign for the women's room but not for the men's. You have to go down a hallway to see the men's room sign and door. As I said, I really do want this place to succeed because I believe the Levee has so much potential. The decor and physical aesthetics are very nice. It's a very large space and it appears they are appealing to a later crowd with line dancing and performances, including Karaoke. There's a good concept here - it's just not yet being executed to its full potential. I love good BBQ. And I'm willing to try again. I just hope they figure these issues out and fast. read more

Great for food and activities. The drink selection is nice with many in house cocktails you won't find elsewhere and a nice selection of beers both bottled and on draft. The food is smoked and barbequed on site which makes for quick delicious service. We were seated with no wait and our server was attentive to our needs and had an in depth knowledge of the menu and thus gave great recommendations to our delight. Not a romantic dinner spot but a nice place to bring the family or catch the game. Tips to make your visit a success: 1) Come for the activities. Activities are plentiful here. On Wednesday they have Line dancing classes and Karaoke on Thursday and trivia on Mondays to name a few. Come for these events and have some food and fun. 2) Get your sides. This is one of my favorite spots in Newport. Their hours stated they open at 5 pm, I stood in the rain for 9 minutes while the manager (Trey) sat at the bar eating. He rolled his eyes after I looked through the window, and stated we open later today because of karaoke while walking away.I would have understood if there was some type of sign stating that, but for a manager to act the way he did shows a high level of unprofessional and disregard for customer service.
