Dr. Chan is an excellent dentist who inspires confidence that you are in good hands. His office staff is another matter. When he decided to initiate his own plan this past year, I telephoned before a scheduled appointment and asked whether that affected my delta dental coverage and I was informed that it would still be fully covered but I would have to pay the charges upfront following the visit which was ok. Unfortunately that was not the case as Delta paid for half the visit which was a cleaning and I agreed to an unscheduled set of xrays. Dr Chan was no longer in the Delta Dentall network. The follow up conversation I had with the staff member was quite unpleasant as she refused to acknowledge her mistake whether intentional or not. This has led to my seeking another dentist in the area. In looking at past reviews I found another that had similar problems with this person. I generally don't write reviews and if so have been positive, but this particular situation caused me to alert others about potential misinformation you may recieve. read more

It is a bit complicated. Sherman Chan is to the best of my knowledge an excellent dentist. During the past three years, I interacted for just a few minutes with him. And, he was very pleasant and knowledgeable. At first, he had an excellent office manager, Carla. She understood the dental insurance business inside and out. She was very efficient and was a pleasure to deal with. Unfortunately, Carla left a long time ago. The current office manager, Claudia, well leaves me speechless in not a good way. She comingled the bills of my wife and me. She made frequent mistakes and did not have an understanding of the dental insurance business that Carla had. I spent countless hours straightening things out, which I never had to do with Carla. And, Claudia complained that she could not spend that much time with me anymore. So, going forward she would let me deal with the insurance companies refunding me and she would charge me everything upfront. Claudia, if you read this review, the only reason I took so much of your time is because you made so many mistakes that took so much of my time to resolve. You also insisted on comingling both the accounts of my wife and me, instead of keeping them separate. That was not cool. Charging my wife for my visit was not cool. Charging my wife a copay when she did not owe a copay was not cool either. Throughout our interaction, I remained courteous, patient, and magnanimous. You not so much. When you sent me packing by indicating that I take too much of your time, and that you would leave me to deal with the insurance companies. Well, that was the cake. You essentially sent me packing to another dentist. On another note, this office's dental hygienists are often not very good. Some are hurtful, others have rather strange personalities, and some have both characteristics. There are none where you feel eager in seeing them again upon your next appointment. Three years ago, we were three family members going to this office. Now, we have all moved on to other dental offices to get adequate services. To Sherman, you are a good dentist. But, a dentist's office is only as good as its entire team. And, your team right now... well does not do you any favor. Who knows, our paths may cross again. If you strengthen your team bench, I may gladly give you a second chance. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Sherman Chan for over 10 years now. I commute from SF to be his patient. I had a cracked tooth about 5 years ago which he failed to diagnose the first time. I had to come back as I was as in pain. I overlooked this mistake and stayed with him. I'm very disappointed in the front office staff. Claudia has been keeping records of changed appointments and have been trying to charge me $80 in addition to my regular bill. He has a new big beautiful office which the patient pays for through what he charges for regular appointments. Time to make a change! read more

After years, I would not recommend this office anymore. My complaint is mostly the office staff and how it is run. Very low budget people running the front office. Quality care of most of the hygienist there are below standard. Also, you will get a million phone calls, texts, and emailed about your upcoming appointment, which is very annoying. Lastly, I have never had a dentist not come in to see you after your bi-annual teeth cleaning. I am relieved to have found Dr. Chan. He is the truly the best because he is honest, informative and makes sure I am comfortable the entirety of the appointment. I previously had terrible experiences with pain and being ripped off by my dentists, but Dr. Chan has helped me feel confident and at ease when getting work done. He is transparent when it comes to costs and what work is necessary. I also referred my mother to Dr. Chan and she has also noted how gentle, knowledgeable and kind he is. Her dental health was in decline for decades and she was very nervous and embarrassed about the state of her teeth. Dr. Chan worked with her and referred her to an oral surgeon (who was also amazing), and she is so much more confident and happy that her health is in order. Thank you for that Dr. Chan! It's been a while since I went to the dentist so when I got my dental insurance the first thing I wanted to do was get a cleaning. Being new to Marin, I didn't know any good dentists so I asked around and Dr. Chan was recommended by my coworker. Dr. Chan's office has a very relaxed atmosphere. The employees seemed happy to work there and were very friendly to me. They treated me with respect and I was informed of everything they were about to do. Also, his hygienist was very gentle and she cleaned my teeth very thoroughly. Dr. Chan himself was very personable and friendly. He was non-judgmental and took cool pictures of my teeth to show me what was going on. The two fillings I needed were done painlessly and they feel fine. Love the dentist but never loved the receptionist. When I called to make appointment she did not inform me that I will be charged $75 if I can't make it. It was my fault that I couldn't make it but I really didn't know I will be charged $75 for no show. I HAVE MESSED UP TEETH, with all my fillings, gold & white crowns, and root canals. Yes, yes.. my fault because my childhood was starved of junk food and years of braces but also because genetically, my teeth just has these perfect gaps that hold on to food so tight. So I know for myself what a good dentist means after spending enough moolah on my teeth to buy another car (well, no beamer but a decent japanese model). I was hesitant about going because I have a preference for female dentist thinking it would be easier to access my teeth- not the case with Dr. Chan because he had no issues replacing my huge filling and I was quite comfortable. And for another tooth, I was already pre-mourning (for my wallet, time, and pain) of yet another root canal but Dr. Chan reassured me by shaving the crown down a little because the previous dentist had set it a little high- talk about months of pain and toothache because I was lazy and cheap. I am so glad I found Dr. Chan. He is extremely polite, affordable, professionally, and really efficient and fast. Super easy to get to his practice(nice that a whole foods is just there), ample parking, there's water in the waiting area, in the bathroom there's floss and toothpaste (nice touch when I forget to brush before going to the dentist), the office was clean as expected, short wait, and their billing went smoothly. The lady at the front desk was helpful (d'oh, didn't know that there's different delta dental state plans) but what was super techie was that I was able to fill out my registration forms online easily. Definitely will be back for a cleaning treatment soon and possible some teeth whitening and perhaps a new nightguard for my TMJ.... read more

Dr Chan and his staff exceeded my expectations! I recently moved from the East Coast to the Bay Area where several friends suggested Dr. Chan's dental practice. I had been with a wonderful dentist for over 28 years, so my expectations were very high. I found Dr Chan to be knowledgeable, informative and humble, taking care of all my needs and even being more thorough than a previous dentist. Carla at the front desk was great getting me on board. Dr Chan's assistant, AnhThu, was very competent, and my dental hygienist, Loretta, was experienced and coached me through new recommendations on how to better manage my gums and teeth. Dr. Chan is a fantastic dentist! He is so gentle and kind. His work is flawless. I had 3 different procedures in one month and every single one was done with the utmost of care.
