My son is 7 and does so well with the assistant because he makes sure he is comfortable and well informed about any process they have to perform on him, including recent fillings. It was painless! I have also received excellent care from Dr. Schafer and his dental hygienist. She is so knowledgeable, friendly, and diligent. I have had to get some serious work done but she makes it seamless. I had back of the mouth tooth issue and an internet search led us to Dr. Paul Schafer. Good thing! Suzanne was awesome! She led us to a specialist who could give me a cone beam digital xray because I cannot tolerate bite wings. We thought it might be an old wisdom tooth or endo issue. Without getting too into the TMI details, I needed an emergency appointment for a cleaning and Susanne got me in same day! She's awesome--super friendly and helpful! I get in, and Dr. Schafer does what he needs to clear up the problem. I went back for another full cleaning before my wisdom teeth removal, and the dental hygienist was so informative and comprehensive about cleaning my teeth. She seriously knows her stuff! The dentist is also so willing to share knowledge and help you get serious about how to keep your teeth clean. I went to see Dr. Schafer. Hands-down the best dental visit I ever experienced. I knew I needed a root canal but they scheduled me for an emergency consultation to start the process. Not only did he confirm my suspicions he darn near did half the root canal right there so I could get some instant pain relief. Very calming, very steady hands and extremely gentle. If you have any issues about seeing a dentist you need to go here. As a sidenote he was out of network for my insurance yet my insurance still paid because of their comparable rates . Listen to the front receptionist don't make assumptions. On top of the great care he pointed out some indicators regarding a possible undiagnosed health issue. Both my wife and I have been going to Paul Schafer for about 9-10 years now. Honestly not sure why it took so long to write a review after all this time, we have recommended friends to him who have also been very pleased. Anyhow in our experience Paul is a perfectionist and does meticulous and excellent work. They also take the time to do dental cleaning right, my previous 2 dentists spent 1/2 the time for dental cleaning as it saves cost. For both my wife and I who are in our 60's, we have to say he is the best dentist we ever had. Also Suzanne who works at the front desk has saved us a lot of money over the years by painstakingly negotiating with and submitting the extra documentation required at times by our insurance companies. I went to Dr. Shafer a few years ago. He did routine inspection of my teeth and in the process picked off one of my gold crowns. The crown was in good shape but he jabbed at it so hard it flew about 20 feet into the air. He thought it was funny and proceeded to tell me what terrible teeth I had. He also said my tongue needed cleaning etc.????? I left the office with crown in hand. I asked Dr. Schafer if he would pay to replace the crown and he refused. Fortunately I went to Dr. Gary Nelson in Mill Valley who did a fantastic job making a new crown for me. My cost was $1200.00 which Dr. Schafer refused to pay for. I feel that Dr. Shaefer is extremely high pressure both he and his staff. If I remember correctly he did not take insurance. I would not recommend Dr. Schafer to anyone. If they had a ZERO he would deserve it. I was forced to give him one star. read more

I have never written a review about a dentist, but I feel like I have found a treasure and put this on his feedback, too. My entire family has been seeing Dr. Schafer for several years and we all have absolute confidence in him. He said I needed to get a root canal and I kept putting it off. We all know what that is like. But Dr. Schafer fixed my tooth with such care and precision that I was amazed. He constantly checked in to see how I was doing. He then followed up with me by text two days later. Wow! And the frosting on the cake is his excellent hygienist. She kept encouraging me to get a type of deep cleaning to help close my periodontal pockets. I finally did and now I no longer have to have periodontal surgery. My whole family have been patients here and it's the best dentist we've ever been to. Dr. Schafer looks at your teeth with a microscope. He has repaired so much bad dental work that we had done from previous dentists. We trust him 100% on all of his recommendations for treatment plans and surrounding specialists. I have been bringing the whole family to Dr. Schafer's practice for over 4 years now and we will never go anywhere else -- my kids even love him when he is telling us how much better we can do with our teeth brushing at home. We are treated like family the moment we step through the door with kind and compassionate care, complete respect, and even flat out generosity. Dr. Paul Schafer is a master dentist. I'm not entirely sure what all that entails in dentistry, other than weekends and weeks spent accruing hours, but to me, as a patient, he is passionate and knowledgeable, caring and gentle. He is also effective. I've put off having dental work done for years. I've seen multiple dentists during that time for routine work and I've always been warned I need to get in for some much needed replacements and updated dental work. Until I met Dr. Schafer I never felt comfortable. Since then, I've been going to him for almost a year getting work done. He's so thoughtful he even retrieved a yogurt from his personal stash so I could take some meds sans an empty stomach. He's not only passionate about dentistry, he truly cares about his patients and he knows what he is doing. Started going to Dr. Schafer a few years back after a previous dentist had installed a crown incorrectly. Dr. Schafer fixed that crown and I haven't had any issues with it since. All his work is excellent; fillings are done with little pain and best of all, no rework! (Although I'm sure he'd accommodate me if additional work was needed.)I have my teeth cleaned by Candace; she's friendly and thorough, and her way of delivering teeth maintenance tips actually makes me want to follow through! The office staff is helpful and I've never had a problem getting an appointment when needed (although for regular cleaning, I book in advance) Nice office, lots of parking, five stars all around. read more

This review is long overdue. Dr. Schafer and his office have been extremely professional, kind and supportive in all the dental treatment appointments. His helpful attitude and deep commitment to his patients, started on Christmas Eve of 1999, when he sacrificed his family holiday time, to resolve a dental issue that was causing me pain and his dental treatment allowed me to go on a cruise the next day. And then, in early 2014, he responded to my plea for help at 7 pm, when he fixed a temporary dental fixture which had broken due to my lack of compliance of instructions not to bite anything hard. And his constant positive attitude and sense of humor always helped calm me during the appointments. His dental hygienists are wonderful and thorough. And Suzanne was always so helpful. The only reason I am unable to continue to use Dr. Schafer's dental services is because I moved to the Peninsula. Yeah, Dr. Schafer is is pretty much as good as it gets. I've been seeing him for almost 2 years now. I've had all types of procedures done on my teeth. I had not been to the dentist very much in 10-15 years and had to get a lot of fillings and put on some crowns. Him and his assistant Miguel will crack you up with their banter. The whole office is just really nice. I know he goes on the weekends sometimes up to Sacramento and to other places where he donates his time and expertise to people that need it but can't afford it.
