I just got done from my first dental cleaning in over 6 years... you read that right - 6 YEARS. I was slightly nervous (it is the dentist office after all) and excited to visit Dr. Chui's office as he had so many positive ratings. It took 1.5 months to get my first introductory cleaning + x-ray exam due to him being so busy. But, I now understand why he is so well-liked and highly requested. The dental hygienists and staff were so welcoming and friendly. They made me at peace the whole time. Somehow, my hygienist was able to clean my "6-year old" teeth in 1 hour... I could feel and see the difference instantly! It was amazing. Dr. Chui is a warm, friendly and thorough dentist. His office is equipped with the latest technology. While I was lying in the chair, I was able to see the exact teeth he was referencing and talking about via a large computer monitor hanging from the roof which was connected to a livestream camera... so awesome! Dr. Chui was able to show me on the screen where a cavity was forming and how I was grinding/clenching my teeth down. I could clearly see the uneven borders and enamel and even hairline cracks in my teeth through the screen images. I assume I have been doing this for years but Dr. Chui is the first dentist to go out of his way to educate me on this. While there, I even decided to purchase a custom-mold dental guard. This product is offered by Dr. Chui's office. Dr. Chui had two options to choose from and even insisted I purchase the more economical option to see if I utilized the guard enough before purchasing the more expensive one. He was upfront, honest and not "pushy" in any regard. In two hours at Dr. Chui's office, I learned more about dental hygiene and my own teeth structure then I had learned ever before. I have been going to Dr. Chui for 8 years now. Having lived in Marin County for 47 years (and seen at least 6 other dentists), Dr. Chui is STILL THE BEST EVER. He is so kind, understanding, professional and honest. His staff are so wonderful. I'm in my late 70's, and Dr. Chui & staff all take the time to answer my questions, treating me with respect. I recently had a (top front tooth) filling fall out - it was over 50 years old. X-rays were taken and several options were discussed. Before I came in to the office, I thought I wanted an implant. Dr. Chui told me that a crown would work well for me, at much less expense. (Because I have many fillings and cracks in most of my very old teeth, veneers would be risky and not hold up.) I then decided that I really wanted to get both front upper teeth crowned, so that the colors would match each other. I have a big smile, my teeth are mostly discolored greyish, with a few old gold crowns and a couple "too whitish" crowns put in by previous dentists. I then offered another idea, to "shave down" the side of the 2nd front tooth, because it was sticking out too much. Dr. Chui was so patient with me. He knows I don't have dental insurance and this would come out of my savings. Dr. Chui then mentioned the actual cost of what I was thinking about doing. He said just replacing the filling that fell out is a practical solution. If I didn't like it, I could do crown/s later. He let me think about it and a couple weeks later, I had the one front tooth filled. I am very happy with my decision. I am so happy that Dr. Chui discussed this so completely with me. And was SO HONEST. I will always recommend Dr. Chui. I just wish I had found Dr. Chui many more years ago. (About 11 years ago, my previous dentist in Novato told me that same front filling, that fell out only recently, was actually my tooth decaying and that I needed a crown immediately.) read more

I just started going to Dr. Chui and at 70 y.o., he is one of the best dentist I have ever met. I had an emergency and even though I was a new patient, Alan got me in and saved the day. I recently went to Dr Chui for my first implant procedure. As always, Alan was very informative prior to beginning the procedure and he did an outstanding job. He then showed me both photos and the xrays of what he had done. Very precise placement and although a little uncomfortable no pain to speak of. I had anticipated being fairly sore after the novacaine had worn off and to my great surprise I had no pain at all! Alan called me on my cell around 7:30 that evening to check on me and we had a nice conversation about post procedure do's and don'ts. Great dentist! read more

The dental hygienists have poor bedside manner and we're rough during cleanings and X-rays. The dentist gave advise to have a tooth removed that was unnecessary and removed a healthy tooth. The hygienists also gave false information on Invisalign to try to sell it when it was going to provide no service functionally or cosmetically. I regret having ever gone here. read more

LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP Would love to run into Dr Chui at Peet's and shoot the breeze. Just don't love having to see him with a paper napkin chained around my neck. You know how it is. Dental work. Yuk. But, as far as dentists go, Dr. Chui is a cool guy. He's more on the conservative side, so won't jam a bunch of dental work on you unless you need it. He's more likely to put a "watch" on it to see if you really need the work done. I recently had 2 cavities filled. (I am one of those poor souls that just has genetically crummy teeth). Dr. Chui works quickly and efficiently. The novocaine injection barely hurt, more of a pinchy feeling, and he got each tooth done, from start to finish, in about 45 minutes. That includes waiting around time to get numbed up. He has a gentle touch and smallish hands. Doesn't over power you when he's in your mouth. He has a lovely chair side manner. Works quietly, nothing worse than a chatty dentist, and is perceptive about if you're feeling pain. Overall, I'm a happy paitent. read more

I've been going to see Dr. Chui for years...ever since early teens. I like that I can get an early 7am appointment before work starts. Everyone at the office is very nice and friendly. They are thorough and work done is generally painless as far as dental procedures go. They have great memories, as they remember things told to them 6 months ago. I have been to many dentists and unfortunately many of those visits resulted in negative experiences i.e. extremely judgmental hygienists who feel they are more of an expert about teeth than the dentist is and who make the patient feel like an irresponsible human being! Today I had my first new patient visit with Dr Chui and it was beyond fantastic. Right from the time I walked in the door I felt welcomed. He even waved to me from the hallway and I had not even met him yet! Dr Chui spent a large amount of time with me completing xrays and then reviewing the xrays with me and the health of each tooth. He then introduced me to Maclyn, his hygienist, and the fun begun. Maclyn was such a ray of sunshine and extremely kind and gentle. I love getting my teeth cleaned and Maclyn loves cleaning teeth. I left the office with a bag of dental goodies, a smile on my face and a confident feeling about my next cleaning in 2 weeks time - trust me, I had not been to the dentist for 5 years and it was LONG overdue. I had a great dentist but he retired and the Dr. that took over for him wasn't very good, so a friend recommended Dr. Chui, been going to him for appx. 10 years now...nice guy, great staff, good work, listens and explains thoroughly and conscientious (makes a concerted effort to not recommend work that isn't covered by insurance, is willing to check with insurance before doing work, puts work off until insurance will cover it and in my case: I needed a crown but told me that because I had bone loss he wanted to wait to see if we could stop the problem before doing the crown so that I wouldn't pay money for a crown only to lose the tooth!) Dr. Chui just came in on a day off to check my college bound son's wisdom teeth and then got him in immediately to remove them. He is extremely thorough and answers every question. I had not been to the dentist in two years and I was afraid and embarrassed by my fear. This morning I finally mustered up courage to call and could not be happier than I am right now. I would give Dr Chui more then five stars! When I began my venture with Dr. Chui I was in quite a bad place with my teeth. Long story, my old dentist pulled my second tooth from the front because I had a root canal. Then I had to wait five years to get an implant because I was too young. Then right when I was going to have my implant done he had a stroke :( he brought a different dentist in to do the implant. The new dentist then put the implant in incorrectly. I waited 6 months for it to heal and in that time, that dentist moved back to Seattle and my dentist had another stroke. My aunt referred me to Dr Chui. I went in and he was so kind. He completely understood my situation. He told me a had a few options. I could remove the implant and replace it. I could leave it and live with a flipper. Or I could have gum surgery and keep what I had. I decided to have the surgery. He referred my to a top surgeon in SF. I had the surgery, it healed, and I went to meet a dentist that I was referred to by the surgeon. I met with that dentist and he told me there was nothing he could do to help me and that I was going to have to get the implant removed. With that said I went back to Dr Chui. He them came up with a solution for a permanent tooth. He took lots of impressions and pictures and sent them to the lab. We received the tiny tooth and tried it on. Dr Chui did not like how it looked and sent it back. What an efficient Dr. We got it back two weeks later. He still didn't think it was perfect so he sent it back. Just recently, I went back in and it fit like a glove! I cannot begin to tell you have wonderful of an experience I had with Dr chui. He took care of me as if I were his family. He was so detail oriented and wanted to make sure that everything was up to his standards, which were very high. He has wonderful bed-side manner and was 100% present when I was in his chair. I really cannot thank him enough for making this horrible ordeal of almost 8 years come to an end for me. I was nervous to smile for such a long time but now, thanks to Dr Chui I have my smile back and it's better than ever! read more

Simply Aces. Went to Dr Chui for a second opinion and found Dr Chui and his staff professional, personable and reasonably priced so I signed up on the spot-despite being fearful of dentists due to past painful experiences. Returned 2 weeks later (he's busy..no surprise) for a crown and cavity. First off, he numbs the area and actually waits until it takes effect so novacane shot, and rest of work, is pain free! Next, in doing crown work, he decides he does not need to build-up tooth first and tells me--thus saving money. So, I would add integrity to his attributes. Lastly, he checks gums and puts the "damage" in perspective not trying to fear me into regular teeth cleaning sessions-still, I sign up for a session.
