I arrived 17 minutes late --4:17 for my 4:00 pm appt for a teeth cleaning. I received a call from the office at 4:10 saying I was late, was all ok. I answered I am runnig late but can be there in 5 minutes. I arrives at 4:17 and was told sorry, I missed the 15 minute deadline for my appointment and there would be a $100 cancellation fee. I said I am here and want to have the remaining 45 minutes of my time. I was told the hygienist had just left to go home. I have been going to this dentist office for over 16 years, never missed an appt and have never been late! They have just lost my business and I think they have become greedy! I do not recommend them -- money is obviously more important than steady and reliable customers. read more

RUDE - been going there for 10 years and something has changed - they are shady and incredibly rude and the dentists are all new and you never actually see them. I've been getting cleanings for several years and, when the dentist comes in, it's a quick check (1 min) and off to the next patient. The last few times, the dentist didn't even bother to come in. The final straw was just now - I had to change an appointment tomorrow (gave them a day's notice) and Consuela called me back and asked "what's the reason?" and I told her it really didn't concern her - I have been a loyal patient for 10 years and I need to make a change. She then informed me that they would charge me $100, which I then told her "you will NOT be charging me - I've been going to you guys for years and this is a private medical reason why I need to move my dental appointment" and she HUNG UP ON ME. Thanks, Consuela - appreciate the professionalism - I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I hear Preferred Dental Care in San Rafael is great, so I'll be checking them out. read more

These people care first and foremost about your money, your ability to pay them, and that's it. Do you have dental insurance? Still not good enough for this dental office because they'll still complain that their 6 not getting reimbursed sufficiently enough from your dental provider, or that they're getting reimbursed too slowly, or incorrectly. WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!!! I received a crown from this practice that has never healed. When I initially had it done I was in excruciating pain with horrible swelling and infection I had to go to Emergency twice for antibiotics and X-ray and eventually a head CT. The crown that was made in the office although convenient is too large for the space and is pushing on the next door teeth causing pain and discomfort. I have now gone to a specialist that states the tooth needs to be removed and I need a bone graft and implant!!! Also I still continue to have an infection there. The kicker is Marin modern dentistry had told me the bill would be removed and now after a year of pain, torture and much out of pocket expense with ER visits and specialists I am being sent to collections! Worst practice ever I wouldn't send my worst enemy there..... just don't. read more

Just had another fantastic experience with a Cerec crown done by Dr. McConnell - I have five of these now, and every time Dr. McConnell is incredibly supportive, professional, patient, and caring - and he checks with me along the way to ensure I am comfortable and not experiencing excessive pain. The results always look and feel fabulous, and Marin Modern Dentistry (MMD) continues to actually improve my dental health into my 50's. I will also add that the Dental Assistant - Crystal - was absolutely incredible - super-professional, gentle, and engaged in very step of the procedure. Very difficult to reach them on the phone. Mostly get their answering service during normal hours. Their non Insurance rates seem over inflated. So if you don't have Dental Insurance I would recommend you look elsewhere. Seems they always want to bid deep root cleaning which really doesn't need to be done. I've waited a little over 24 hours to write this review because I really, REALLY wanted to give a five star review. Jessica at the front desk, the dental assistant and Dr. Daniel were all very kind and helpful. Here's the story from my perspective: My dentist is closed on Friday and Saturday; plus I wanted to find a dentist in network who wasn't a premier dentist because I do live on a fixed income due to a chronic illness and frankly even with dual coverage, dental treatment is expensive and NOT ONE dentist in Marin County will bill my secondary. Much to my excitement, the office was able to get me in the next day; you see, I'd eaten salt water taffy from the Dollar Tree on Thursday and it was hard, got stuck to my tooth and yanked part of my filling out; ironically, during this high tech visit the photo showed a crack in my tooth and some decay as well. Dr. Daniel told me a crown was the only way to go due to the large size of this filling; and they do them right there in the office; I was skeptical, very nervous, but, hey, I'm all about saving my teeth so, I agreed to the crown. This was fairly urgent, I was in pain and I trusted Dr. Daniel. I've never experienced this high tech equipment. During treatment I realized they'd not done color matching, I was assured by Dr. Daniel that the computer does all that, he told me that my color was "A2" something I knew from having previous crowns done. He got to working on the computer to create the crown, then a machine pumped it out; Dr. Daniel fitted it, made some minor adjustments to the bite and then said "I'm going to do some art and crafts on it, I'll be back" a few moments later, he was back to cement the crown in my mouth. This entire time, I'm at ease, I trusted this would be A2 color and match the crown RIGHT next to it. He had me bite down with the blue paper once more just to make sure, and then cemented the crown. I rinsed, took a look, noticed a blue tinge, but thought it was from the paper for the bite check and thought I'd brush it off at home. Upon getting home, I decided to take a photo to send to my sister; so excited about this new crown and realized it's tinted gray on the buccal side of the tooth; the side that shows when I smile; the occlusal side matches the crown next to it; as does the lingual. I don't know if that's the arts and crafts Dr. Daniel did, if he thought it should look like it did PREVIOUSLY with the big silver filling that it had in it, but had I known that wasn't going to brush off, I would not have left the office. I called right away and was given an appointment to come back on Wednesday afternoon. I'm nervous; this crown will have to be removed; I'm extremely anxious about dental work as it is; and get "laughing gas" for cleanings as well as crown removals, deep fillings or root canals mostly due to having fibromyalgia so the nerves in my body have crossed pain signals; so this will be very stressful for me. Add to it that they charge extra for the gas, and that's more money I have to spend for a color match mistake that was not my doing - as a matter of fact at no time prior to cementing the crown was I asked to look at it, only asked if the bite felt right. It is my hope that I can up this to five stars after the visit on Wednesday and continue on with this office because the staff was very helpful and extremely friendly. It takes a lot for me to change dentists, I was at the same place from age 17-53 so and only three years with the previous dentist. The fourth star is for the great music, air conditioning, lavender scented blankets and neck pillows (I didn't use), the water, and smoothies they offer; plus everyone there has A+ personalities. Guess I'm going to have to find a new dentist. I've been going here since middle school and now it's all of a sudden impossible to make an appointment. I have called the front desk at least 20 times at different times in the last two weeks trying to get through and no one ever answers. I left a message and I finally got a phone call back and the entire message cut out. I am a teacher and can't answer the phone whenever it rings so I asked for a call back after school, and now haven't heard back. At this point I give up. 1 star for the customer service, all the hygienists and dentists have been great, but if I can't come in to see them, I can't give any stars. read more

Dr. Makenna Vierck is amazing. She really cares about your results and is amazing at explaining the process. Loved my root canal / internal bleaching process. She saved my teeth from crowns. I went to MMD After my old dentist decided not to return to practice and all my kids and husband went as well we were referred to them by a friend. I liked there yearly treatment plan as we do not have dental inssurane. Well all of us had a HORRIBLE experience. One son was treated badly, my daughter had retainers made that do not fit and they have "fixed" twice, my crown is supper painful and still hurts, Their accouting system is odd and every time I go there they are trying to collect money from us without fully exposing why. I said I couldn't make an appointment and they still keep trying to get me to come in on the day I cancelled. They NEVER seem to check their phone message apparently!!! HORRIBLE go elsewhere. read more

Canceled my appointment after a terrible experience with the front desk staff. Was coming in as a new patient for an exam and cleaning. Cleaning was about 6 months out. My exam apt was cancelled so I called and was rescheduled to the same day as the cleaning. Awesome I thought! Then informed them I cannot do X-rays (pregnancy) but had my previous dentist send over prior imaging. After going back and forth for days via phone call and text they said it was policy to get X-rays and I had to do it or cancel. Preventive care and dental care is so important especially while pregnant. They said the only way to keep my apt was to have my doctor send a medical clearance letter stating I could have my teeth cleaned. My doctor shared my thoughts in how ridiculous this request was. I was seeing a dentist prior to cleaning who I thought would okay me to see a hygienist. I've had teeth cleaned while pregnant before and it was never an issue. I scheduled with another dentist in the area who were wonderful and did not require medical clearance for cleaning or X-rays while pregnant. read more

I started going to Marin Modern after moving from San Francisco about a year ago, and it has been life changing. They are a great practice, everyone is super friendly and professional. Dr. Vierck has been amazing and was able to come up with a reasonable treatment plan for me (which requires a lot, but made me feel comfortable), unlike many other dentists. They are not pushy at all either, like most dental practices, and always suggest the right options and discuss them with you so you have an opinion, only focusing on what is the priority, rather than trying to collect money for the most expensive treatments. I ended up coming here (on a referral) only after my previous dentist visits were costing me a lot out of pocket, even with excellent dental insurance coverage. I've been to Marin Modern Dentistry three times (just for maintenance/cleanings) but I am really enjoying the visits, the people there are warm and friendly, and the office respects my time (by being on time for my appointments.) And happily, all my visits have been completely covered by my insurance. It is a comfortable setting and they make dentist visits easy and enjoyable. I do know, however, that they are very busy and book up quickly. I already have my next appointment booked! Marin Modern Dentistry used to be a wonderful dental practice, until it hired Dr.Makenna Vierck. I had been a patient of this practice for many years. The office staff and dentists were the nicest and most caring. The other day, I made an appointment to simply have my teeth cleaned. To my great surprise, I was treated with total disrespect and told that unless I agreed to full mouth X-Rays, I could not be seen. I recently had cancer surgery, where I was specifically instructed not to have oral X-rays for at least 6 months. Dr.Vierck was determined that I still had to have X-Rays, regardless. She raised her voice and kept talking over me. She demanded that my oncologist document any exception and that this was a new office policy. Dr.Vierck was all about enforcing policy, in complete absence of critical thinking or accepting an individual's unique needs...no compromise or thinking outside the box. read more

I was a patient of the Novato Office for about 10 years. I am no longer a patient of this practice--the have been big changes and not for the better. The hygienist was excellent but left the practice. The dentists were mediocre in my opinion because their diagnosis regarding a crown and referral to an endodontist was wrong. A second opinion solved the issue verysimply --saving me about $5,000.00. The Novato Office sent me to their new Mill Valley Office after a change in insurance plans with the same insurer. The administration of the office for claims, pre-approvals is a burden due to having to constantly resubmit pre-approvals. The hygienist was not as thorough a the professional in Novato nor personable.The three times I saw a hygienist in Mill Valley, I saw a dentist once for 3 minutes max. Also, be careful to review your bills as they will charge you more than the agreed upon, contracted price with the insurer. The practice owner, Dr McConnell hires young dentist usually just out of dental school without much experience to assist him in his practice. Hopefully this has changed. I feel this practice is more interested revenue per patient than the patient. I would not recommend this practice. read more

We recently moved back to northern California and thus searched around for a new dentist for our family. So far two members of our family have gone to Marin Modern Dentistry and we've been very impressed with their customer service in the front office, with two of the dentists, and two of the hygienists. It can be difficult to get appointments with dentists as new patients but the staff at Marin Modern Dentistry helped me get an appointment for my daughter who was returning to college and then again when she needed a few fillings. We found the front office to be exceptionally well run from making appointments, to handling our paperwork (mostly online which is convenient); to check out and billing. All the dentists, hygienists, and dental assistant staff were kind and competent. due to changing insurance we've been to a handful of dentists in southern California in recent years and have received pressure to do cosmetic type work or "enhanced cleanings". I was very happy not to have to endure this sales pressure at Marin Modern Dentistry. I don't write many reviews but our experience with our new dentist office in Novato has been so positive that I felt compelled to post this review. read more
