Compared to the typical American Bakery this is outstanding. Its fun to go to what feels like an OG location - even though you've probably had this from Ranch 99. This part of SF offers lots of great bakery competition - for that reason only minus one star. The city offers the best of the best when it comes to baked goods - they are a bit more expensive than this place but I think worth it - at least once in a while. The pricing here is down to earth compared to other nearby places. Typically I don't like American bakeries - everything is too sweet and that isn't the case here. These days its so hard to find a good deal - and I do believe that is just what this is. Maybe next birthday try here for a cake instead of the typical Whole Foods place or Safeway or whatever. There are more unusual findings especially if you aren't familiar with this bakery.

Looking for a Summer romance during the Summer of Love and even all four seasons? You can find one a few blocks over from Outside Lands area before entering the fences. It's located within the Sunset Strip in the Outer Sunset on Irving street in San Francisco . This Summer Romance I am referring to is on display and ready to enjoy on Irving street. Inside Sheng Kee Bakery #1 you will find desserts ( not desert). This Sheng Kee Bakery #1 has a feel of a local community center with baked goods. The people come here to sit down and the neighborhood congregates( it reminds me of the 24th street McDonalds without the bullet proof glass)as people greet each other and know each other like suburban neighbors but in San Francisco. You will find delicious fruit cheese tart, Portuguese custard tart and cakes like the Basque cheese cake . There is also the Purple Romance (Taro) and occasional cakes and moon cakes. The Summer Romance pastry was so tasty. It is good to see couples who have been together for decades enjoying Peet's coffee and still delighting in each other's company and having a good genuine conversation over a Summer Romance. Here is a "tip"from a native San Franciscan for those going to Outside Lands on a "trip" don't forget to stop for a Summer Romance a hop and a "skip"on Irving street on the San Francisco Sunset "Strip " Step inside Sheng Kee Bakery #1 inside get some treats with mousse and some about to get "whip" with mango and taro some with "chocolate chip "this Sheng Kee Bakery#1 not only has desserts ( not desert) it has Peet coffee "drip" and espresso to get that jolt as you" sip"you see some singles then some couples which been here for decades and some newbies who just started their voyage getting on board their first Summer Romance "CourtShip"

Sheng Kee Bakery is a no-frills, classic Chinese bakery in the Sunset neighborhood. It's perfect for a quick, affordable grab-and-go bite. I picked up the ham and egg bun, which reminded me of simple sandwich and ended up being my favorite. I also always look for a Swiss roll at Chinese bakeries and tried the mocha sponge roll here, which was just alright. I preferred the savory ham and egg bun overall.

8" Green Tea Red Bean Mousse Cake

Since we were celebrating a birthday, I purchased an 8" Green Tea Red Bean Mousse Cake ($35.95). +Cake was soft, fluffy, and not too sweet. +Most green tea/matcha baked goods are mild in flavor, but this mousse was strong and earthy. +Grapes were crunchy & sweet. +Happy birthday sign, candles, forks, plates, and a hybrid knife server are included w/purchase of a cake. -Red beans weren't evenly distributed throughout the cake. There were some slices with no red bean at all. -Strawberry halves weren't fresh. -Topped with a thick layer of cream that left an oily mouthfeel. We ended up scrapping most of it off. *Verdict: 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 d/t service. The cashier took my order quickly and gave me a sturdy bag to carry the cake in, which was appreciated.

Here are two sets of different customers waiting patiently around 6:55

the location said their closing time was 7, I arrived promptly around 6:45. I sadly watched the lady close and lock the door in my face. Along with other customers waiting at the door

Came to Sheng Kee Bakery to try their ham and egg bun and compare it to Pineapple King next door. It was very good--the steamed egg was well made without excessive seasoning, which I appreciate, as some Asian bakeries tend to overdo it. However, I wasn't a fan of the mayonnaise they used as a sauce; I think it would have tasted better without it. The staff here are very friendly and even heated up my bun upon request! I also asked for a recommendation since it was my first time, and the kind lady suggested their Portuguese egg tart. It was pretty good--not too sweet and with a strong eggy flavor, which I liked. The atmosphere inside is welcoming, and I could tell it's a neighborhood favorite, with locals hanging out and catching up. They have a wide selection of Chinese and Taiwanese-style baked goods, and I'll definitely be back to try more savory items based on other reviews!

Flavor is just like the bread in China! My favs: hot dog bread, porksung bread and the coconut jelly thing. Also there is the credit card minimum so you have to use debit or cash!

I bought a coconut twist and it was hard and dry. When I went back right away to the store, the server said it was made that day and supposed to be this way. I have been a loyal customer for years but never had such dry and stale pastries. Will never go back to at least this location again.

black sesame bun

tried the red bean mochi bun and black sesame bun, and I liked the fillings a lot but the bread itself was kind of dry and not as soft as I'm used to at other Asian bakeries. note that they take credit card only with $10 minimum purchase

Stumbled upon this place on a Sunday afternoon and picked up a ham and egg bun along with their early bird special of a Hong Kong style milk tea and a pineapple bun. The food tasted really fresh and the egg was really thick and jiggly which I liked. The service was great as the worker was really helpful and the prices are unbeatable. Will be coming back here again!

Oh my, this Sheng Kee confused me. First, they actually have coffee. Granted it came in just one size and was scalding hot, but hey, it was coffee to go with your plastic-wrapped pastry. Second, they set up a few cafe tables, so you don't have to grab and go. You can actually hang out, eat your pastry, and burn your tongue on the coffee. That was what I did as I smiled at the senior Asian woman at the next table and devoured a $2.05 Coconut Bun (photo: https://bit.ly/44fNGks). They also bake full blown cakes here. End of story. FOOD - 3.5 stars...the bun was pure Sheng Kee, kinda stale AMBIANCE - 3 stars...nice try at creating an actual cafe SERVICE - 3 stars...efficient enough TOTAL - 3 stars...like the concept of a Sheng Kee cafe, needs work RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Great pastries, easy parking, next to Home Depot on the corner.

Friendly, busy, fresh- a good place to go to recover from shopping! I always used to go into Chinatown when I worked on Kearney Street, but this bakery is so much closer. Smells great, love that smell of fresh baked dough. Enjoy! Easy parking in Westlake Shopping Center next to Home Depot on the corner. Try the coconut rolls.

Sheng Kee taro pastry (inside) with mochi center. Very delicate and full of taro.
Kris P.

I received a delicious package from a dear friend for Lunar Year from Sheng Kee. I received the taro pastry with mochi center and crunchy milk bar. Both tasted fresh and packaged well. The taro is very delicate and was disturbed in transit so upon opening some of the pastry had separated, causing very small particles in the packaging. No biggie. The milk bar was indeed crunchy and perfect to pair with tea. I enjoyed my gift, both parcels were delicious. I may order more these won't last too long with me lol. Xiexie, Sheng Kee.

Do they have boba here?

Yes but I'd go to one of the other boba locations on Irving. They're plentiful.

I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. Hubby's favorite. He's a vanilla head, so... Salted egg yolk. Hubby's other favorite. I like, he loves. Ube. WOW. Better than the matcha which is weird coming from me. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. That crestfallen look my husband had was replaced with delighted satisfaction. Glee even. We went again the following Saturday. 5 stars

My favorites are the cheese roll, the chocolate thing and the almond cookie. All of the treats have the perfect balance of sweet and savory. And, they have stuff for breakfast, lunch and maybe even dinner. The customer service is great too. All of the cashers at the front are patient and kind to me when I give bills. They all ask how the day is going, and one gave me $2 off! The bakery is well decorated from the inside and out. They're tiny details like the cute, hand drawn 'Dog Parking' sign, the banners and drawings from other kids, and all of the carefully arranged baked goods. I think that Arizmendi is a part of my life that I will miss as an adult. I hope you enjoy their service as much as I do.

When my wife and I started planning our leisurely drive to San Francisco, we intended to visit two…read morebakeries, Tartine and Arizmendi, with the goal of purchasing scones and other pastries/desserts. Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.

The only downside is that it's not given to you heated. Eating it cold was not optimal. The banana "tart" because I don't recall the exact name, is to die for! It's sweet, it's sooo good! It's like banana crack. It has caramelized parts to it, and you won't want to share it!! The double backed pistachio/blackberry croissant is a food group all its own. It's everything you want in a pastry! The Thai tea was just OK. Super pricey for the amount. It's not that traditional taste profile.
