I stopped by for a Sunset district night market event, and saw that at the time, Sheng Kee was offering a special of $2.99 for taro milk tea or milk tea. I opted for the milk tea; the cup was small, and the tea tasted like earl grey or possibly ceylon. It was an okay price, given how expensive boba gets nowadays. I also noticed they were selling some uncommon flavors of small moon cakes such as matcha, banana, cranberry, mango, lychee, low sugar cherry pineapple. Aside from pastries and breads, they also sold beef horns, chicken pies, and BBQ pork pastries in a display that keeps them warm. I bought the mango, pineapple and matcha mooncakes. Mango: Barely tastes like mango, mostly eggy. Matcha: Only barely tastes like matcha, it tastes more like lotus. Pineapple: This one was really good, the fruit flavor was strong. It reminds me of pineapple cake. Overall, not the best in terms of being true to the advertised flavors for the mooncakes, but they are really pretty. If you're not fond enough of mooncakes to want the large ones that most places sell, and want something smaller than the standard size, then this might work for you as a cheap alternative. read more

Tried a couple of their new promotional items today. Mini basque cheesecake, size of your palm is $9.99 -- flavor is average. If you're really craving some and just need a few bites, this might be a good alternative. Mini pork sung babies $9.99 -- these were surprisingly very fluffy and light, but super tiny, maybe 3 to 4 bites at the most. They're stuffed with a tiny bit of cream inside. The taro cream was very skimpy. I like the coating of pork sung on the outside to give it a slightly salty contrast. Compared to the typical American Bakery this is outstanding. Its fun to go to what feels like an OG location - even though you've probably had this from Ranch 99. This part of SF offers lots of great bakery competition - for that reason only minus one star. The city offers the best of the best when it comes to baked goods - they are a bit more expensive than this place but I think worth it - at least once in a while. The pricing here is down to earth compared to other nearby places. Typically I don't like American bakeries - everything is too sweet and that isn't the case here. These days its so hard to find a good deal - and I do believe that is just what this is. Maybe next birthday try here for a cake instead of the typical Whole Foods place or Safeway or whatever. It was very good--the steamed egg was well made without excessive seasoning, which I appreciate, as some Asian bakeries tend to overdo it. However, I wasn't a fan of the mayonnaise they used as a sauce; I think it would have tasted better without it. The staff here are very friendly and even heated up my bun upon request! I also asked for a recommendation since it was my first time, and the kind lady suggested their Portuguese egg tart. It was pretty good--not too sweet and with a strong eggy flavor, which I liked. Oh my, this Sheng Kee confused me. First, they actually have coffee. Granted it came in just one size and was scalding hot, but hey, it was coffee to go with your plastic-wrapped pastry. I've tried an assortment of the pastries from Sheng Kee and have had way more hits than misses. It's a great place to come for a pastry haul that's not 85C or Paris Baguette. The pineapple mooncake, pineapple cake, and plain pineapple bun are all excellent. There is a minimum required spend of at least $10 to pay with credit card, but it's so easy to reach the threshold, as you probably won't want to stop at just a couple pastries. read more

I received a delicious package from a dear friend for Lunar Year from Sheng Kee. I received the taro pastry with mochi center and crunchy milk bar. Both tasted fresh and packaged well. The taro is very delicate and was disturbed in transit so upon opening some of the pastry had separated, causing very small particles in the packaging. No biggie. Cake quality has severely declined as Sheng Kee expanded its number of locations. Their fruit basket cake used to be my family's go-to for every celebration for at least 10 years. Sadly, the last 3 cakes we got from Sheng Kee the past two years were awful. One cake was half frozen, one was too dry, and the third, which we had today, tasted like play doh and was super dense. We're throwing out most of the cake because it literally is inedible. Never buying a Sheng Kee cake ever again. read more

One of the best bakeries in the Sunset neighborhood! Based on the clientele you'll often see frequenting this bakery, this is a shop cherished by locals and foodies alike. Dishing out the classic pastries plus some, my favorite items to pick up from this spot are the curry beef bun and the bbq pork bun. Other items that should definitely make your roaster are the thin almond cookies and any of their cream-based ones in the pastry fridge. The ambiance is grab-and-go even though they have a couple of tables available for seating. Parking is somewhat difficult on this part of Irving, due the commerce and accessibility to Golden Gate Park. Every single time I go, I'm greeted by the wonderful Derrick who mans the register and is so cheerful given his early hours. Highly recommend this bakery for your sweet or savory pastry needs. Sheng Kee is a great place to get a quick and easy last minute cake order done right! My friend and I called in on Tuesday to place an order for three birthday cakes to be picked up on Friday. The pick-up process was fuss-free with a quick inspection of the cakes and white chocolate message plaques. We got the 8" tiramisu, pig cake, and bear cake. All cake layers were light and airy and the cream wasn't too thick or too sweet. The animal cakes had a lot of cream to help create that dome shape. Overall, I would definitely return to Sheng Kee for a cake order! It's well worth the price. Unfortunately, we got straight to eating the cake and didn't capture any good pictures lol. read more

Not my go to place to get fresh Asian baked goods. The pork bun, egg custard, and pineapple bun that I have tried were so so. But, one Sunday I needed a birthday cake quick and I came in about 10 minutes before closing and got their mango mouse cake. They weren't able to personalize the sign but they were able to stick a happy birthday sign on the cake for free. For having it been a last minute cake pick up, the mango mouse cake was a hit with my relatives that were over. Every time I'm around Westlake Shopping Center, it's like my legs automatically take me towards Sheng Kee Bakery. It's become a ritual at this point, Hot Dog Bun, Curry Horn, and Chicken Pie. I've been to other Sheng Lee's in the Bay Area and always assumed it was a chain that originated in Hong Kong or Taiwan: the stores give off that vibe with their crisp and clean aesthetic and immaculate rows of individually wrapped pastries. It was only upon visiting the Outer Sunset location that I realized it's a local chain and this is the flagship. Everything is aesthetically appealing. I could probably spend all day choosing pastries. I ended up getting my usual, bolou baos, or "pineapple buns" (because of the design--they don't contain pineapple). I think they're the best I've had in the Bay Area. Fresh and light. I also grabbed a mocha walnut bun. It was light and not overly sweet--a perfect example of the Asian adaptation of European pastries that one finds in Hong Kong and Taiwanese bakeries. My daughters chose taro buns because of the purple color. They liked them at first, but found the sweetness too cloying after a few minutes. We took our pastries to enjoy in Golden Gate Park. A perfect afternoon I'm used to Rustic Bakery prices so I find Sheng Kee extremely reasonable. read more

I love how they have a variety of buns with meat floss! I'm so used to the typical meat floss bun with mayo inside. We come here a lot but we had a very poor experience recently. My grandma came here to buy some bread. Naturally, when you're purchasing items, you want to check the expiration date of things. However, when she began looking, a relatively tall, skinny, and tattooed worker (do not know by name), he came up and began blocking her view. He began waving his hand in her face and stopping her. Unfortunately, my grandma faces language barriers and couldn't convey her frustration. She said that she was leaving and he simply responded "good" Very unhappy with this experience. I love coming here to pick up one or two (or three haha) blueberry cream cheese danishes. Funny thing is, there isn't ever any cream cheese but it's still so good! It's buttery and flaky and you'll look like you were up to no good after the powdered sugar gets all over your face. I've also tried the pineapple rolls - so fluffy, sweet, and so good! They also have banh mis which are a hit or miss. Sometimes they're okay and sometimes they're meh because ingredients are missing (I probably wouldn't get again). There's always two confusing lines...one right in front of the register and then another one to the side of the register. For the side line, that's where you pay after grabbing your tray and baked goods. Once you make the loop around you stop at the little window (by the heat lamp goodies) and slide your tray under it and wait to pay. Sometimes people don't know this so they get back into that first line and then it gets crowded. The people waiting in that first line may also think you're cutting but there's two lines! My husband went to this store for bread on June 2nd afternoon because we have been customers of Sheng Kee Bakery for over 20 years, and we had the worst retail experience with the store manager. When his fingers inadvertently cut themselves on bread packets and was bleeding profusely, he went to the counter and requested bandages. The store clerk intended to give him some, but the store manager stopped him. Afterward, the security guard gave him a bandage as sympathy since he does not speak English well. Following this outburst, the store manager asked him to leave immediately out of fear that he would go suited. When my husband attempted to pay for the goods and leave, the store manager not only asked him to do so but also reported us to the police by lying that we had damaged their merchandise and thrown bread on the floor. We need to let people know the store manager was evil and not capable of running any business at all ! read more
