First time here and I don't usually get boba from places that sell food because usually only one or the other is good but this place surprised me. Their boba of their tiger milk tea was pretty perfect. The boba itself had good flavor and the milk tea wasn't overly sweet. Apparently tiger milk tea is very similar to thai milk tea but different milk in it. I'll get the chubby size next time even if it is a few dollars more! read more

Sheng Kee is a solid little bakery on Telegraph in Berkeley. The selection of Pastries can be a little intimidating if you're not familiar with these kinds of desserts, but as long as you're not easily overwhelmed, it's definitely navigate-able. They also have a small selection of full sized cakes, so it's a good place to stop if you're a college student looking for a Birthday cake in a pinch. Sheng Kee's boba is not bad, especially for a place that's primarily a bakery. There are definitely better boba options in Berkeley, but the boba here is solid. Oddly enough, I come here for their fresh baked croissants. They are large, flaky and oh so buttery! Normally my co-worker and I go to Sheng Kee to grab some croissants before heading to Cafe Milano to get lattes before heading back to work. The croissants at Cafe Milano are good too but Sheng Kee's are $1.95 which is much cheaper than most cafe's! No need to get it toasted since it is absolutely flaky already! I've also tried their other standard breads like the pineapple bun, cocktail bun, red bean bun, and matcha twist bread. They're all good but since I live close enough to drive to Oakland Chinatown, I consider Sheng Kee's Asian breads to be a bit pricey. However, if you're a student who doesn't want to have to Bart or bus to Oakland or SF, the opening of Sheng Kee was life-saving. This is a go-to bakery for Taiwanese goods, whenever I am in the Berkeley area. Sheng Kee pastries are always good quality and it is significantly cheaper than 85 degrees, and a bit less expensive than Kee Wah. My traditional Chinese parents very much enjoy the garlic toast, despite being more of a sweets people, and the regular items I get them include the Egg Bread, Taro Ball, Taro puff bun, Portugese Tart, and the Butter cookies. They have milk tea too, but the two times I got it, it was only mediocre. The service is what you expect from an asian bakery - fast, efficient. And they do individually wrap, but not seal, your items. It can take up a bit of plastic, so I'm sure they (and the environment) appreciates it if you asked them to skip the bagging. read more

2.5 stars. Pastries and other foodstuffs are either salty or their textures are not what's expected. I found the cheesecake which costed $1.65 to be more like a pound cake which was fine for me, but the Danish boat pastry had cream that was almost gooey not whipped or light or fluffy. My friends and I decided to have a Sheng Kee Bakery haul which resulted in the 4 of us buying 12+ different kinds of bread. Good place for a broke college student since it is all grab-and-go. Some of the items we ordered that were memorable: 1. Purple Romance - Flaky taro bun with real taro chunks in it. Would not recommend if you do not like taro because there is a lot of it. 2. BBQ Bun - Asian style BBQ pork. Too sweet. 3. Hot Dog Onion Roll - My childhood! Just a note, overall the bread is amazing with its semi-sweet lightness. My only issue with this roll is that the hot dog seems too smooth to be real. 4. Pork Sung Bun - Such a classic and a must get. The cream on the bottom may be too much for people though. 5. Egg Tart - GET THIS! Super silky interior with a flaky crust. One of the best egg tarts I have eaten in America. By the way, it doesn't taste like egg whatsoever. 6. Green Tea Mochi - I love the bits of mochi inside the bun, really gives it a whole new texture. Definitely recommend. 7. Ham and Mushroom - Also known as Asian style pizza. Too sweet for me but love the touch of mushroom. Last year, I ventured out to the Sheng Kee in Union City and San Francisco (Outer Sunset) for my taro chiffon cakes for the holidays. What joy it was when my oldest sister told me Sheng Kee opened up a bakery by the UC Berkeley Campus. I could never find the time to get to this one after work and/or on the weekend. Finally, today (because I am on vacay for about three weeks) I decided to take public transportation to get to my destination. It would have been a lot quicker to have my husband drive me, but parking is not easy. Besides the weather is warm and I don't mind walking the 5 to 6 blocks to Downtown Berkeley to hop on the BART train heading back to Oakland, I am happy with this location because it is convenient for me to get here instead of the ones in Union City and San Francisco. I didn't do too bad and only spent about $11.00 for the baked goods and my favorite - taro chiffon cake. I even bought a peach mousse...had to eat that right away. Lo and behold, when I left out of Sheng Kee, I saw they had a special on the mini mousse cake - purchase three and get one free. I am also glad that the cashier (a friendly and helpful young gentleman) did not mention that special to me. I would have never made it out of the bakery...LOL. There's an enormous chunk of milk chocolate on the inside and it simply melts in your mouth. I like the pineapple bread a lot as well!! The green onion shredded pork bun was pretty good too but a bit oily. Pretty good place to stop by on the way to school to buy something to eat. The milk tea came in these fat and short cups which made them different from other boba places in the area, but sadly have been discontinued. Quality is not bad for the pricing here - since it's a Taiwanese bakery, it reminds me of the one I have back home and I occasionally like to stop by to make a quick lunch out of their cheap sandwiches and breads. Because of its extended hours it is a popular place for students to pick pastry items in the morning or late night. They have a wide variety of pastries, and you generally serve your self. There are a few items in their pastry cases, which requires assistance. It's a great place to go because of its close proximity to the school and the hours. Ehh... I stopped by here yesterday because i've heard good things about this bakery. I bought the mocha/white unfrosted cake slice that is in the refrigerator section and a coconut pastry. The store was very clean and organized and a bit busy. I really like the layout that they have. The checkout process was pretty easy, however service wasn't great. I was checked out by an older asian woman with short hair and glasses who wasn't very friendly and rolled her eyes at me. Despite the rude service I was excited to get home and try the pastries. The mocha cake slice was good. The bread was very fluffy and the taste of mocha was really subtle but not in a bad way. There is a very thin layer of frosting between the two slices of bread that was just okay. The coconut pastry was not good at all. It had an interesting smell and has a very overpowering taste of egg which is really gross. I ended up throwing it away. One of the biggest plus factors for me is its proximity to south campus and its large variety of selections. I usually don't order any drinks from here, but the chubby drink deal is a good one. The HK Pineapple Bun is a solid choice. The green onion and hot dog bun is a little greasy and very flavorful but I try not to get it for a quick snack because I don't wanna smell like onions all day. I enjoy getting the swirly bun that has custard on the inside as well. The tarts are alright, and are more sweet than eggy; a decent option when you are on southside and don't want to travel. My go-to Asian pastry place in Berkeley. The pastries (excluding the mooncakes, but those are always a bit expensive) are cheap for the size. My favorite pastries are the taro bun (large oval-shaped purple-topped bread with taro paste inside) and the pineapple custurd bun. They also have a couple green tea/matcha pastries which are yummy as well. I would suggest getting a pastry with custurd on the inside. Although it's small inside, they have a wide variety of pastries to choose from. We got mostly sweet pastries, but they had lots of savory options, too. I love Paris Baguette, but Sheng Kee is definitely a much better deal and has many similar items as well. Everything was so fresh even though we didn't even go that early in the morning. They have a great selection of traditional Chinese pastries with some Taiwanese items to add to the mix. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by the aroma and sight of freshly made pastries. So much to choose from! Pros: Fresh and ready to eat pastries, great selection and large boba menu. They even have stewed braised Soy Sauce eggs, typically called Chinese Tea Leaf Eggs. These eggs are located next to the cashiers and contain a deep flavor of anise and brown hues of black tea with soy (probably the source of smell as you enter). Very appetizing and a treat in Chinese culture. Cons: High traffic (due to popularity), a bit pricier than your typical Chinese pastries from Chinatown but not a big difference either.
