My go to spot to get baked Asian goods! They had a new item which was the everything bread with cream inside and it was delicious. Service is self serve and the ambiance is small but so many options to choose from.

I have been to Sheng Kee Bakeries at different locations in the Bay Area for the past twenty plus years. Their daily loaf toasts : red bean toast and coconut toast were my favorite. Cakes were good too. But, my experience today at this Berkeley location for a quick grab and go Ham and Egg sandwich was a disappointment. The egg in the sandwich was so salty that after two bites, I have to throw the sandwich away. At first, I am not sure if it was the egg or the ham. So I tried the egg separately and it was more salty than the ham. It was not edible. Feels like the egg was soaked into salt water before cooking. And since I separated the sandwich, I noticed they put a lot of mayonnaise in the sandwich too. It's definitely not a healthy choice.

My favorite Berkeley bakery. Before the Pandemic we used to come to Berkeley monthly for my husband to get a haircut. While he was getting his haircut I'd shop around in downtown Berkeley and always stop at Sheng Kee Bakery. Sometimes I'd get there drink, but they are a 2 for deal and I only wanted one. I'm not sure if you could only buy one drink and get the same deal. They now have a hot section which includes chicken pies and bbq pork bao. We didn't try one this time, but next time I'd love to get a bao. I believe they are $3.25 each or something close. They have lots of delicious sponge cakes in the first refrigerator next to the other pasties. I really like there sponge cakes. The pink and yellow one is my favorite. They also have small pieces of cake in there main fridge. I'd like to try the mango one. It looks so good. They have all different types of backed goods. Some sweet and others Savery. They also have an assortment of mooncakes. I checked they don't have chocolate moon cakes. I've had them once and they delicious. Saturday when we were there we had a cream filled pastry with strawberries and blueberries in it. It was tasty but too sweet. I think everything in there was around $3.25. My favorite treat is the loaf. I don't know what it's called. It has 4 sections and is so good. I really wanted to get it this time, but I didn't know what I'd do with the leftovers as we were walking around Berkeley and I didn't want to eat it all or carry it around. Next time when we are going home afterwards.

Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Portion to Price: 3/5 Overall: Pretty standard for Asian pastries. The extended review... Food: 3/5 - Got a bunch of different things to share including buns and cake slices. For the most part they were pretty standard fare. Service: 3/5 - Standard service. Ambiance: 3/5 - A grab and go kinda place. Portion to Price: 3/5 - Pricing is fair.

Sheng Kee has and continues to be my go-to Asian bakery in Berkeley. They have affordable and tasty deals (my favorite being their Hong Kong Egg & Ham sandwich) that always make for a quick breakfast/lunch. They have a card minimum, but you'll easily meet it with 2 pastries. They also make boba drinks with free toppings included and a solid discount if you buy 2 drinks (around $8 for you and a friend) Service is quick and simple. Vibes are pretty similar to other Asian bakeries (trays with parchment paper & tongs) and they're always consistent with their products. A pricey but convenient place to get moon cakes when it's that time of year

Service is 10/10 - The employees in the front are so incredibly sweet and helpful.. ngl kinda rare in this area SO YEAH! I ordered a vanilla coffee and it came out within a few minutes. It was pretty good! Pastries are 11/10 - I've tried many of their pastries, my favorite are the egg tarts and onion buns. If I'm on my way to school or leaving with an empty stomach, I'll stop by here and pick up a little treat since it's so fast, cheap, and convenient. U only need like $5 here lol. Cake 20/10 - I ordered a red bean and matcha cake for my sister's birthday. She doesn't have a sweet tooth at all and she LOVED IT!!! If you find most store cakes a bit too sweet for your liking, maybe try out Sheng Kee's. Cake was light and airy. matcha cream layered on top of a red bean layer and white cake on the bottom. Super cute designs + the employee put the hbd sign for me before she wrapped it up beautifully!!

Sheng Kee has a variety of fresh pastries to choose from. My favorite are the egg tarts and custard buns. Come early in the day since a lot of items run out in the late afternoons! I recommend also getting their cakes for special occasions, especially the mango mousse one.

My go-to Chinese bakery when I was young! Egg Tart (B) - this egg tart is very crispy and runs for less than $2, but I would've liked the sweetness to be intensified here. Pork Floss Bun (A) - my preferred choice of pork floss buns as they are very generous with the pork floss, creating a harmonious balance between the pork, mayo, and bun. Garlic Bread (B) - this was my favorite item as a kid; I like the strong garlic flavor, but I feel like some sort of salt and sugar or fresh herbs can help elevate this bread. Hong Kong Pineapple Bun (A) - I personally prefer this over the traditional pineapple bun as it is sweeter and more flaky. The bolo component of the bun works with the rest of the pastry very well!

Great local spot for boba and a fast bite! Sheng Kee is a local favorite for both drinks and bread for its competitive pricing and its wide assortment. My favorite bread is taro marble bread! It's overall really good and the marbling on top is perfection. I also got the jasmine milk tea which was also good! It is a bit on the sweeter side though so I highly recommend asking for less sugar and ice as there is a lot of ice and sugar in the cup. I also tried their pudding which was good! Make sure to mix it first before eating it and to get a spoon elsewhere as the pudding did not come with a spoon itself. I will be back occasionally in the future for future breads and teas! The next one I want to try is the chocolate cream puff!

I finally decided to go inside and think I went a little crazy with ordering.. As you get inside, there are 2 kiosks that you can order on and the ordering process is pretty simple. I got all my food to-go and the wait was about 10 mins or less, so pretty quick! The service was awesome as well! The guy saw me struggling trying to carry all the food, drinks, and my IPad (I got stuff from the gas station prior) and he offered to help and put my drinks in this holder. I ordered the Tiger brown sugar milk tea w/ boba pearls, Hot Cheetos Half N Half corn dog (comes with choice of dipping, I got mustard), 8 piece fried dumplings (comes with soy sauce), fruity pebbles mochi donut, and the strawberry and banana nutella croffle. The milk tea was super good, could never go wrong with a brown sugar milk tea! The hot Cheetos corn dog was crispy and super good as well, however I wish I had eaten it when it was still hot to get that cheese pull... the fried dumplings were crispy and delicious. The fruity pebbles mochi donut was really soft and chewy (in a good way) and had the flavor of a glazed donut. Also the cereal tasted fresh! The strawberry/ banana Nutella croffle was so delicious and tasted like a strawberry/ banana waffle. I think this one had to be my fave. Overall, I paid a little under $40 with tip for all the food and I would definitely go again!

Their sandwiches are probably what first got me hooked. The bread is so good, with a chewy inside and a nice crust, and the fillings are always fresh and flavorful. The combinations are also really well thought out. From there, I started working my way through the rest of the menu. I've had their Kouign Amann, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, baguette, Sourdough Batard, Sunflower Rye Spelt, pretzel buns (you can probably tell I'm a bread person), pies, seasonal radicchio salad, and passionfruit madeleines. Their seasonal radicchio salad has actually become one of my favorites to take to work for lunch. I also love that they rotate the Kouign Amann flavors, so there's usually something new to try whenever I stop by. I've enjoyed almost everything I've had here. One pie was a little too sweet for me personally, but that's really the only thing that comes to mind. I also really like the presentation and the atmosphere. The pastry case always looks beautiful and tempting, and the space feels relaxed and welcoming. It's easy to pop in and grab something, but it's also a nice place to meet friends for coffee and something sweet. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality, which is another reason I keep coming back. More than anything, I just really enjoy having Starter Bakery in the area. It's become one of my neighborhood go-to spots, and I always seem to find another reason to stop by.

The ambiance is wonderful - I absolutely love the deep blue color scheme, the cute matching mugs, and gorgeous plants. They have a lot of different pastry choices, but unfortunately, there was only one vegan option: a tiny hazelnut sweet bread. I ordered the bread along with an Americano. When I tried to take the pastry out of the package to share it with my girlfriend, it completely crumbled into a big mess. I went up to the counter to let them know, and the employee told me it was actually meant to be eaten straight from the package. She mentioned it was on the drier side being vegan, she took the crumbled mess and gave me a new one but it ended up having the exact same issue. It wasnt dry, but it just wouldn't hold any moisture and was far too crumbly to eat. For $5, this tiny pastry was a major letdown. To make the interaction weirder, she took the original crumbled bread back from me and I'm only assuming threw it away, which felt entirely unnecessary. Having been vegan for nine years, I've had some truly amazing, moist vegan baked goods, so this was incredibly disappointing. While the vibe and aesthetic are great, the vegan options were major letdown. CC accepted Restroom available

I'm known to fight dirty and conspire with others during this game and everybody hates me because of it, and I didn't want to be banned from their apartment, as Paris in the fall is lovely. Thus my journey with Walter began. One thing about me, is I respect a place that knows flavors. I don't want basic vanilla, give me some weird and strange and flavorful that will tantalize my palette and ignite my senses. Give me salty and sweet. Give me TANG. Give me these things and DONT give me gas. Bad Walters cracked the code. All flavor, real dairy, no lactose, no gas. Each week they have a different batch of flavors, so there's always something new to explore. There's like 6 flavors to choose from at once and they let me try them all before I selected my choice hehe. I tried to sample 6 flavors at Cold Stone and they took me out back and shot me, but here, nobody was mean to me. Mr. Potatohead is the flavor I landed on--brown sugar custard with peanut butter swirl and chocolate covered potato chips. The chunks of chocolate covered potato chips were lodged in the ice cream and I felt like an archaeologist excavating ancient rocks as my spoon lifted the potato chocolate chunks out of the creamy custard into my mouth. I bought a pint. The Mick Jagger was another joy, with its salty caramel and Oreo chunks. They're lucky Peaches Christ was sold out because I might've lost my mind for a peach cobbler ice cream! The employees are very helpful and kind letting you sample the flavors. Our absolute favorite is tinky winky- ube flavored ice cream with honey comb pieces. They also sell points to the side- take advantage. You'll want more when you're done! The ambiance and vibe of bad Walter's is perfect. Bright colors, disco ball dripping, fun sayings on the cups, the whole 9 yards. The take home pint we got has Reddit "hate" comments and their responses, it's hilarious. Oh and they also do a stamp card when you buy pints to get a free scoop. You bring in the containers so they can recycle them. It's a win win for both sides, loves it. Best ice cream ever!!!
